High Ranking Club

The Collegeport 4-H Club report 12 girls completing all goals in clothing. All but 4 have tomatoes growing and 10 of them have done most of the required fruit cooking and canning.

County Federation Meeting at Midfields Saturday

Mrs. Alma Hale, County Home Demonstration Agent, presented her new assistant, Miss Lois Weisent, who in turn introduced Netina Jenkins, Collegeport, 4-H Gold Star Award winner for the county. Netina, with the aid of her mother, Mrs. Joe Jenkins, exhibited garments and novelties she had made, and vegetables she had raised to win the award. Members exclaimed over her accomplishments, and heard with interest that she is feeding out a calf to enter in next year’s fat stock show.

Collegeport Boy’s 4-H Club Meets

The Collegeport 4-H Club met September 5 and elected officers as follows:

John Merck, president; Charlie Smith, vice-president; Frederick Law, treasurer; Hubert Bowers, secretary; Howard Christmas, reporter.

Mr. Oliver J. Reinhart, assistant county agent, was present and weighed John Merck’s calf and it tipped the scales to 515 pounds. He also weighed Charley Bonberly’s calf and it went to the 560 pound notch.—Reporter.

Cold Weather Fails to Keep County Stock Show From Being Big Success

Although the annual Matagorda County Livestock Show was held under dismal weather conditions, the damp and cold failed to stop the show from being a big success.

Local Boys Do Well in County Fat Stock Show

Russell Lawford [Law?] of Collegeport showed the sixth place drylot calf and sold the 840-pound animal to Independent Rice Warehouse of Bay City for 41 cents.

Collegeport 4-H Elects Officers

A called meeting was held at the Mopac House in Collegeport on Sept. 11, to organize a 4-H Club. Gus Franzen called the meeting to order at 7:40 p. m.

A name for the club was brought up for discussion. It was voted to call the newly formed club Collegeport Community 4-H Club.

Election of officers was held. The following were elected: President, Terri Franzen; Vice-President, Jan Romine; Secretary, David Neisig; Treasurer, Donna Kacer; Reporter, Wesley Franzen; Parliamentarian, Jay Ledwig; Council Delegates, Richard Neisig and Jesse Ellis; Recreation Leader, Louis Henkes and Refreshment Chairman, Jay Romine.

Gus and Ida Franzen are the Organizational Leaders. There are 23 members enrolled.

4-H

The Collegeport Community 4-H Club met at the Mopac House Oct. 9 at 7:30 p m, Jan Romine, vice president, presided. The motto and pledge was led by Amy Holsworth and Rhonda Kacer. Jav Ledwig told some "Parliamentary Courtesies" for all members to practice at the meeting. The secretary, David Neisig, called the roll and read the minutes. Donna Kacer gave the treasurer's report and Richard Neisig gave the county 4-H council report.

Committee reports were given. Wesley Franzen and Traylor Lenz gave a report on the Rice Dish Round-Up. Linda Neisig commended the members for the good work they did on the 4-H float. The club won third place on their float in the Rice Festival Parade and received $5.00 from the Lions Club.

Gus Franzen told about the swine and lamb project deadlines.

Jan expressed special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Lenz for the beautiful gavel they gave to the club, also to Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Ellis for the money they gave to the 4-H club.

Mike Urban, the Game Warden, gave a program on "Gun Safety”. The members were interested in Mr. Urban’s pointers as most of them like to hunt. Mr. Urban said to always treat a gun as if it were loaded. Charles Pittman was responsible for this program. The members thank him and Mr. Urban for the good program.

The meeting adjourned with the club prayer. Refreshments were served by Jesse Ellis. The next meeting will be Nov. 13th. Miss Marilyn Sebesta will be the guest.

Collegeport Session Set

The Collegeport Community 4-H Club will hold its regular monthly meeting November 13 at 7 p.m. at the Mopac House. Miss Marilyn Sebesta, County Extension Agent, will be the guest. She will introduce various projects which 4-H'ers can participate in. Parents are encouraged to attend the meeting with their children.

Also,“1979 Food Leader Training Meetings" are scheduled as follows: Collegeport, Palacios. Deutschburg Areas on November 14 at II a.m. at the Mopac House in Collegeport: Bay City area. November 16 at 7 p.m. in the courthouse kitchen. Mrs. Carolyn Brown will direct these meetings.

Food Show Held at 4-H Meet

The Collegeport Community 4-H Club met at the Mopac January 8 at 6:30 p. m. The president Terri Franzen presided. Amy Holsworth and Rhonda Kacer led the 4-H motto and pledge.

Frank Summers, asst. county extension agent, was the guest. He gave an interesting program on “Getting the Animals Ready for the Show.” He told about calves, swine, lambs and chickens.

A local 4-H Food Show was held at the meeting. Members who participated in the Food Project prepared a dish which they will enter in the County 4-H Show January 27. The dishes were judged and ribbons were awarded. Mrs. Sidney Armatta and Susan Armatta judged the dishes and interviewed the members.

Members who participated, their entries, and ribbons won are as follows: Amy Holsworth, angel pie, blue; Richard Henkes, fish in orange glaze, blue; Jesse Ellis, chocolate pie, blue; Rhonda Kacer, gelatin fruit mold, red; Wesley Franzen, layer salad, blue; Jan Romine, rolls, red. Traylor is a future 4-Her and could participate in the local program. John Rucker took the cooking classes but was not able to be at the meeting. Mrs. James Henkes and Mrs. Buddy Lenz were the Cooking Leaders.

Terri Franzen and Jan Romine gave a demonstration on Setting a Table and Table Manners.

After the meeting a tasting party was held.

Family night

A covered dish supper was enjoyed by members of the Collegeport Community 4-H Club, their parents, and guests preceding the regular December meeting.

Mrs. Carolyn Brown, county extension agent, was the guest speaker. She gave a program on Method Demonstration. George Brown received a round of applause on a presentation of his Method Demonstration. The County 4-H Method Demonstration contest will be March 27 at the Service Center in Bay City.

Craft night was held at the Mopac to make Christmas gifts for shut-ins. Mrs. Peggy Pittman and Margaret Lawson were in charge. On Thursday December 21 at 10:30 a. m. several 4-H members accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Gus Franzen to Matagorda House in Bay City. They visited members and presented the gifts which the 4-Hers had made.

Surprise Gift For 4-H Club

The members of the Collegeport Community 4-H Club are happy to tell of the surprise gift they received. Jessie Ellis presented a beautiful green banner inscribed with Collegeport Community
4-H Club at the last meeting. This 4-H banner is a gift from Jessie and Carolyn Ellis and Buddy and Lynda Lenz. The club thanks them very much.

The regular meeting was held February 12 at the Mopac at 7:30 p.m. Jan Romine, vice-president, presided.

Congratulations to the members who participated and won ribbons in the County 4-H Food Show, Amy Holsworth, Jan Romine, Rhonda Kacer, Wesley F nzen and Richard Henkes. Jan Romine will go to the District 4-H Food Show April 28 with her Dinner Rolls.

Gus Franzen reminded members that our club will work in the concession stand at the Livestock Show on Saturday, March 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. He also reminded us to work with the animals as show time will soon be here.

A program on "Getting Ready for the Fair" was given by Mrs. Gus Franzen. The fairbooks were examined, and members were told how to fill out entry cards and tags for entries at the county fair. All
cards must be turned in by February 28.

The meeting adjourned with the Club Prayer.

Refreshments were served by Wesley Franzen, Jan and Jay Romine. Valentine decorated sugar cookies and strawberry punch were served to all 21 members and adults present.

Collegeport 4-H Has Batch of Fair Winners

The regular meeting of the Collegeport Community 4-H Club was held at the Mopac on March 12 at 7:30 p.m. The president, Terri Franzen presided. David Neisig called the roll and read the minutes.
Donna Kacer gave the treasurer’s report. Jay Romine and Allen Neisig led the 4H motto, pledge and prayer.

The adult leaders congratulated the members who participated in the Livestock Show and Fair. Each one was a winner. Jesse Ellis showed a champion heavy weight swine, Wesley Franzen had a champion light weight calf. David Neisig received a white ribbon on his lamb.

Juani Pittman was a high point winner in the Jr. division of the fair. Terri Franzen was a high point winner in the senior division. Jan Romine, Richard Neisig and Juani were rosette winners.

Other participants in the fair were Louis and Richard Henkes, Donna and Rhonda Kacer, Amy Holsworth, Charles Pittman, Todd, David and Allen Neisig and Wesley Franzen.

Mr. Franzen reminded members to write thank you notes to the buyers of their animals.

The meeting adjourned with the club prayer. Refreshments of cookies and punch were served by Richard, David, Allen and Todd Neisig.

Collegeport Plans Picnic

The Collegeport Community 4-H Club met April 9 at the Mopac and 7:30 p.m. The president, Terri Franzen, presided. Donna Kacer served as secretary due to the absence of the regular secretary.

A short business meeting was held. The 4-H Club members voted to send a check for a donation to the "Pool Fund.” A committee was appointed to plan a picnic or party for the end of school. Lisa Harvey joined the 4-H club and was welcomed as a new member.

The president announced that District Round-Up and Food Show will be held Saturday, April 21, at Cypress Fairbanks. The Matagorda County Run for Life sponsored by Matagorda County 4-H and
Youth Committee will be Saturday, April 28 at 9 a.m. at Bay City High School Memorial Stadium.  Anyone who can participate is encouraged to get pledges now. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. All prizes for this event have been donated.

Mrs. Gus Franzen gave a program on Posture. Members participated in demonstrations.

Refreshments of lemonade and cookies were served by Donna, Rhonda and Tony Kacer.

The next regular meeting will be May 14, and officers will be elected for next year.

Collegeport 4-H Elects Officers

The Collegeport Community 4-H Club met May 14 at the Mopac building. Members answered roll call with telling what they want to do this summer.

Mrs. Franzen announced that the 4-H Fashion Revue will be held June 28. There will also be a Wearable Division such as any accessory which may be worn, belt, hat, scarf, vest, lt may be embroidered, crocheted, macramed or painted. These will not be modeled but will be placed on
a table for judging.

The County Bike-A-Thon will be July 14. This is the function for the summer, so make plans to participate.

The following officers were elected for next year: President, Jan Romine; Vice-President, John Rucker; Secretary, Terri Franzen; Parliamentarian, Amy Holsworth; Treasurer, Wesley Franzen;
Reporter, Jay Ledwig; Council Delegate, Richard Neisig.

The meeting adjourned with the club prayer and refreshments of iced tea and cookies were served.
The club members did some sweeping and cleaning of the Mopac in preparation for Collegeport Day celebration on Saturday, May 26.

Collegeport Names Program Leaders

The Collegeport Community 4-H Club met September 10 at the Mopac House at 6:30 p. m. for a family night supper and the first meeting of the year. Members filled out registration cards for the new year. There were 32 attending.

During the business meeting plans were made for the year. Project leaders were selected. Program subjects were given. Richard Neisig was elected 4-H council delegate.

The club voted to participate in the Bay Fest in November to benefit the Pool Fund.

Announcements were made by President Jan Romine of the Rice Festival on October 11-12-13 and the Rice Dish Round-Up October 11.

The 4-H Awards Banquet will be held October 6 at the Palacios High School Cafeteria. Tickets are on sale now.

The 4-H Food Leader Training meeting will be held September 19 at the Mopac House at 1:30 p. m.

An end of summer outdoor party was held last month at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Franzen. Hot dogs were served to 35 4-H members and guests. They enjoyed playing pool, baseball and football.

Collegeport 4-H

The Collegeport Community 4-H Club met in regular session October 8 at the Mopac. The president, Jan Romine, presided. Scott Ledwig and Suzanne Holsworth led the 4-H Motto and pledge. Suzanne then led the group in singing two 4-H songs. Terri Franzen called the roll and read the minutes. Members answered roll call by naming their favorite food. Wesley Franzen gave the treasurer's report. Pete Flores was welcomed to the club as a new member.

The Bay Fest is November 3. Our club will have a booth with Prairie Center 4-H and Round-Up 4-H Clubs to sell T-shirts.

Lynda Lenz reported on the float which is planned for the Rice Festival parade.

Mrs. Linda Neisig told of the Halloween Party being planned. The club voted to have a hay ride and weiner roast.

The president announced that the financial committee decided that our club will collect aluminum cans for a money making project. We would appreciate everyone in the community helping us by
saving your cans.

The next meeting will be November 12. A local food show will be held at that meeting. All members who take Food and Nutrition classes will prepare a dish they will enter in the County Food Show
December 1.

Collegeport 4-H

At the monthly meeting of the Collegeport Community 4-H Club, Amy Holsworth and Traylor Lenz led the motto and pledge. Su Su Holsworth then read a poem. “The Little Whistler.” Terri Franzen read a contribution letter sending $10.00 from Joseph Lerma of Blue Island, Illinois. Our club really appreciated the gift.

The winners of the Rice Dish Round-Up went to the front of the room and showed what place they won. The winners in our club are Traylor Lenz, Wesley Franzen, Terri Franzen and Ida Mae Franzen (adult). Ida Mae won a ticket to the Oasis dinner and an apron.

Terri Franzen read a paper on food measurements. Refreshments were then served by Lynda Lenz.

Food Show Winners Honored

A local 4-H Food Show was held November 27 at 7 p. m. at the Mopac by members of the Collegeport 4-H Club who completed the Foods and Nutrition Project. The members prepared the dish they will enter in the County 4-H Food Show on December 1.

Judge for the event were Mrs. Rosalie Ellis and Mrs. Mamie Wells. The dishes were judged and the contestants interviewed. Ribbons were awarded to all contestants. Members played games pertaining to Food and Nutrition while the judging was taking place. A tasting party was then enjoyed by all present.

Mrs. Linette Holsworth and Mrs. Lynda Lenz were the leaders for the Foods and Nutrition Project.

Among those participating were Diane and Rhonda Kacer, Amy and Suzanne Holsworth, Jerry Bennett, Scott Ledwig, Traylor Lenz, Terri and Wesley Franzen and Jan Romine.

Club Gets Ready For County Fair

The Collegeport Community 4-H met on February 11 at 6:30 p. m. at the Mopac House in Collegeport. The president, Jan Romine, called the meeting to order. Traylor Lenz and Scott Ledwig led the motto and pledge. The secretary, Terri Franzen, called the roll and read the minutes from the November meeting. Wesley Franzen gave the treasurer’s report and Amy Holsworth gave the council delegate report. Mrs. Franzen gave reports on the Fruit Cake sales, 4-H day in Houston, the County Fair and Livestock Show and the Housing Project.

Refreshments were served by Traylor Lenz and Jesse Ellis. Gus Flores was welcomed as a new member.

Collegeport 4-H

John Rucker gave a report on 4-H Day in Houston on February 23. Seven members and three adult leaders attended. Rhonda Kacer reported on the Housing Project held February 7. Seven members and two adult leaders participated. Traylor Lenz gave a report on the Home Economics Division of the fair. Nine members had entries. Terri Franzen and Traylor Lenz were winners in the high point division. Jesse Ellis reported that our club won second place on Livestock Judging. All members who had animal projects told what they received. Four of the members participated in the calf scramble and received scramble certificates to apply on the purchase of a calf for next year. Congratulations to all who participated and did so well.

County Method Demonstration Contest will be March 25 in the Service Center in Bay City.

Lynda Lenz gave a program on “Preparing Record Books.” Record books are due May 5.

Collegeport 4-H Elects Officers

The Collegeport 4-H Club held its first meeting of the year Sept. 8 at the Mopac with 19 members and adult leaders present.

The new officers are as follows: president, John Rucker; vice-president, Terri Franzen; secretary, Allen Neisig; treasurer, Jesse Ellis; council delegates, Jan Romine and Traylor Lenz; reporter, Jan Romine; parliamentarian, Wesley Franzen; song leaders, Suzanne and Amy Holsworth; and telephone committee Rhonda and Dianne Kacer.

John Rucker presided and Terri Franzen served as secretary in the absence of Allen Neisig. The members answered roll call by naming their favorite vehicle. Two new members were welcomed, Timmothy Fowler and Jerry Martinez. Terri read a note from the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation to acknowledge receipt of a gift given in memory of Jesse Brown and John William Rucker.

Amy and Suzanne Holsworth participated in the County Fashion Revue. They received blue ribbons and Amy represented Matagorda County in the Sub-Deb division at District Fashion Revue July 29. There she received a blue ribbon. Terri Franzen and Traylor Lenz entered the wearable division. They each received a blue ribbon.

Suzanne reported on the awards trip to Texas 4-H youth Center at Brownsville. Traylor Lenz and Suzanne Holsworth made the trip while Amy Holsworth was unable to go.

Lenz reported on the Clowning Project which Amy and Suzanne Holsworth, Jan Romine and Traylor and Garret Lenz participated in.

Business discussed included the Matagorda County 4-H Awards Banquet set for Oct. 4 at McAllister Junior High Cafeteria in Bay City; the Rice Dish Round-up and Rice Festival Oct. 23-25; and money making projects.

The club will continue to collect aluminum cans as a project to make money. They will enter a float in the Rice Festival Parade.

The meeting adjourned with the club prayer. Lynda Lenz and Linette Holsworth served lemonade, oatmeal cookies and lemon squares. For recreation, Traylor Lenz and Amy and Suzanne Holsworth demonstrated their skills in clowning. They explained the art of make-up. Rhonda Kacer and Jerry Martinez were their models for demonstration.

The next meeting will be Oct. 13 when County Judge Burt O’Connell will be guest speaker on citizenship.

4-H

The County 4-H Awards Banquet was held Oct. 4th in Bay City. Area youths receiving awards were: Kim Corporon-I Dare You Award; Wesley Franzen-Farmers Union Award; Traylor Lenz-Outstanding Junior Semi-Finalist Award. Receiving other awards were Todd Corporon, Terri Franzen, Amy Holsworth, Suzanne Holsworth, Kim Corporon, Wesley Franzen and Traylor Lenz.

Judge Addresses Collegeport 4-H

County Judge Burt O’ Connell was guest speaker at the Collegeport 4-H Club Oct. 13 where he addressed the group on citizenship.

O'Connell said that as responsible citizens, people should respect the law and abide by rules. It is a privilege to vote in elections, serve on the jury and help hold elections and serve in the armed forces he added, he pointed out that good citizens take responsibilities and consider them privileges.

Club president John Rucker presided during the business session. Mrs. Gus Franzen presented a 4-H Pledge Flag to the club as a gift from Gus and Ida Mae Franzen. Amy Holsworth led the 4-H motto and pledge. Terri Franzen read the minutes and called the roll. Members answered with their favorite football team.

Peggy and Eddie Martinez were welcomed as new members. Jesse Ellis gave the treasurer’s report. Traylor Lenz gave the council delegate report and told about the livestock judging contest he participated in at Edna. Wesley Franzen told of the County 4-H Awards Banquet held Oct. 4. Among those attending the banquet from the Collegeport Club and receiving awards was Wesley Franzen who received the Farmer’s Union Award. Traylor Lenz was a finalist in the Outstanding Junior Member Award. Amy and Suzanne Holsworth and Traylor Lenz received record book awards. Terri and Wesley also received certificates and 4-H patches for 4-H work.

The club voted to sell T-shirts at the Bay Fest Nov. 1 to benefit the Swimming Pool Fund. The club also agreed to change its meeting date from the 2nd Monday to the 4th Monday of each month.

Thinking of you cards were signed and sent to Richard and David Neisig who are in the service.

Mrs. Rosie Jewell invited the club to their Halloween party Oct. 27 at Prairie Center 4-H. Prairie Center 4-H Club will meet with the Collegeport Club Nov. 10 when William Younger will present a program on seafood.

Refreshments were served by Jerry Martinez and Timothy Fowler.

Collegeport 4-H Club Wins Honors
At Rice Dish Roundup

The Collegeport 4-H Club won top honors in the 1980 Rice Festival Parade and Rice Dish Roundup recently. They were awarded the grand prize on their circus theme float, complete with Big Top and Tarzan on an elephant.

Top winner in the junior division of the Rice Dish Roundup was Garrett Lenz with his Pina Colada Rice Pudding. Besides a blue ribbon and Grand Rosette, he received a rice cooker, ten pounds of rice, a rice canister and a ticket to the Rice Banquet.

Mrs. Linda Neisig was grand champion winner in the adult division with her Rice Patio Salad.

Mrs. Gus Franzen was first place winner in two categories: main dish and dessert. Rice Orancini, a main dish, and Golden Rice Ambrosia, a dessert, won a rice cooker and a rice canister in each category.

Among the other 4-H winners in the Rice Dish Roundup were Traylor Lenz, Allen and Todd Neisig and Terri and Wesley Franzen.

The next regular meeting of the Collegeport 4-H will be Nov. 10 at 7:30 p. m. at the Mopac. Prairie Center 4-H Club will meet with the Collegeport Club for a program on seafoods presented by William Younger.

Collegeport 4-H to Disband Over Low Membership

Due to declining membership, the Collegeport 4-H Club will disband effective June 1.

The 4-H group would like to thank everyone who has supported them over the years. The support and encouragement has been greatly appreciated.
