Lee Funeral Home and the body was forwarded overland to Houston for shipment at 3:15 p.m. by Missouri Pacific to Lebanon, Tenn., his birthplace, for burial. Services Held Rev. Harry K. Sarles, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, Port Arthur, conducted the funeral service with Paul U. Lee in charge. Pallbearers were the elders and deacons, including O. S. McCullough, Dr. G. A. Lillie, R. N. McNair, W. B. Killough and W. A. Fairchilds, elders; Allen F. Jones, Dr. C. W. Spear, H. H. Echols, Jr., W. A. Ash and Nelson Stiles, deacons. Surviving Rev, Buchanan are his widow, Mrs. Ella Buchanan, Goose Creek; three daughters, Miss Mary Buchanan, Goose Creek, Mrs. C. W. Christian of Houston and Mrs. C. O. Hill of Judsonia, Ark.; and one brother, Ike Buchanan of Lebanon. Mrs. Buchanan, Miss Mary Buchanan and Mrs. Christian will accompany the body to Tennessee. 54 Years in Ministry
Rev. Buchanan had been a Presbyterian
minister 54 years, 12 years of which was spent as pastor of the First
Presbyterian church of Goose Creek. He would have been 76 years old on
December 14. Last year on his 75th birthday, he was feted at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh H. Echols Jr., in Goose Creek with friends and church
officials from all sections of Texas on hand for the event. Varied Experience His 54 years in the ministry included a time as a country preacher, a missionary in the mountains of Tennessee, president of a university and pastor of one of the largest Presbyterian churches in Houston. "If I could live a part of my life over," he once said, "I would like to go back to the time I spent with the mountain folk. They are the greatest people of earth. Their absolute honesty and their absolute dependence as friends are the qualities I most admired. I spent eight years among them--the happiest of my life." From this assignment he was called to the presidency of Cumberland university in Lebanon, Tenn., his alma mater, where his father was president before him. Rev. Buchanan was born in Lebanon on December 14, 1861, and 18 years later he graduated from the university there with an A.B. degree. Four years later he graduated from the theological department of the school. He spent two more years there before and from 1885 to 1887 he was a student at Union Theological seminary in New York. Pastor in Houston His first pastorate was at Danville, Ill., where he spent five years. He came to Texas in 1892 and spent five more years as pastor of a large Presbyterian church in Fort Worth. In 1897 he came to Houston to become pastor of the Central Presbyterian church, a post he held until 1912. Out of that church has grown two modern day congregations--Westminster and Woodland Heights churches.
At the height of his career in Houston
he gave up the large and attractive pulpit to go back to Tennessee to
become a missionary "I wanted to be a country preacher because I believed I could do more good in that capacity," he explained. Heads College In 1920 he was named acting president of Cumberland university. During his tenure as acting president of this school one of his students was James V. Allred, now governor of Texas. On June 14, 1922, Rev. Buchanan and Miss Ella Dickey were married in Bonham, Texas, the bride's home. They had met in Houston while he was pastor of Central church and while she was teaching there. He gave up the college executive berth to re-enter the ministry, again returning to Texas to take up a charge as pastor of the Collegeport church in Matagorda county. From there he came to La Porte and after two years in La Porte he began holding services in Goose Creek. He became pastor of the Goose Creek church in 1925 and remained in that capacity until his resignation on last Oct. 6. Daily Sun, Goose Creek, Texas, November 23, 1937

The body will be taken to Lebanon, her former home, this morning at 8:45 o’clock, where funeral services will probably take place Thursday. She recently returned from Texas with her husband, who was serving in an army camp there as an army chaplain. Besides her husband, Mrs. Buchanan is survived by three daughters, Misses Mary, Kate and Ruth Buchanan, all of Lebanon. The Tennessean, Nashville, Tennessee, February 11, 1920 Mrs. Ella Dickey Buchanan Following an illness dating back several months, Mrs. Ella Dickey Buchanan, wife of the late Dr. A. B. Buchanan, a Presbyterian U. S. A. minister, whose last work was at Goose Creek, Texas, died Tuesday. Mrs. Dickey was a sister to Mrs. H. L. Rogers of this city and a step-sister to Miss Mabel Killough. She was a native of Newburn, Tennessee, but had lived in Texas 35 years. She was married in this city to Dr. Buchanan, and they went to Goose Creek, Texas, where they lived until the death of Dr. Buchanan. His wife has been making her home in Bonham since then. Mrs. Buchanan had a wife circle of friends who loved her for her gentle nature and kindly Christian character. She was a faithful member of the church and was always ready to do her part in the advancement of the Christian religion. The world is the poorer and heaven the richer, in the passing of people like Mrs. Buchanan. Funeral services were held at the home of H. L. Rogers at 3 o’clock Wednesday with interment in Willow Wild cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. B. W. Wrenn, Presbyterian U. S. A. minister of Whitewright assisted by the Rev. W. O. Dr. H. P. Janes, Noted Educator, Dies at Home Services for Dr. H. Paul Janes, 64, for 31 years coordinator of special services for the Camden Board of Education, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Presbyterian Church, Broad and Center sts., Woodbury. There will be a viewing tomorrow night in a funeral home at 275 Cooper st., Woodbury. Burial will be in Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro. Dr. Janes died Saturday in his home on Johnson rd., Turnersville. He was graduated from Trinity University, Texas, and received his master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania and his doctorate in education at Temple University. He was an ordained Presbyterian minister. In Dec. of 1953, Dr. Janes recommended to the Camden Board of Education a four-point plan to halt the spread of juvenile delinquency which included suggestions that parents be held legally responsible for acts of their children, and that service agencies of a community help the courts correct or prevent delinquency. He spoke hundreds of times on teen-age problems. Surviving are his wife, Romona; a son, H. Paul Jr. of Washington State; a daughter, Mrs. Jay Ayres of Turnersville; two sisters, Mrs. F. C. Moffet and Mrs. H. L. McComb, both of Texas; and four grandchildren. Courier-Post, Camden, New Jersey, November 2, 1961 Ramona M. (nee Morrow) Janes, of Burneyville, OK. On March 2, 1990. Wife of the late H. Paul Janes. Aged 85 years. Mother of H. Paul Janes Jr., of Bend, ORE and Ramona J. Walker of Burneyville, OK. Mrs. Janes taught special education at Gibbstown Elementary School for many years. Funeral service Wed. March 7 at 1 PM at the Presbyterian Church at Woodbury, Broad and Centre Sts., Woodbury, NJ. Interment Eglington Cem. Viewing Tue. 7-9 PM at DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, 171 Delaware St., Woodbury, NJ. Courier-Post, Camden, New Jersey, March 6, 1990 Collegeport Minister Asks For Release Rev. H. Paul Janes asked to be released from services at First Church of Collegeport this week. Pending release from his work here, Mr. James has accepted the position of direction of the department of budget collection of the Board of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church, U. S. A. Mr. Janes expressed regret at leaving Collegeport where he has spent three years as pastor of First Church of Collegeport, the oldest Community Church in Texas. “I am leaving for three reasons,” Mr. Janes said. “First the church is in the best of condition. The years of greatest struggle and past and with the certain development of the country here a new man would have a better opportunity to take hold of the work now. It would be unwise to change administration of a church in the middle of a rapid period of growth such as is soon to follow to Collegeport. “Second, it is impossible for me to do the graduate work in the university that is necessary, if I stay in the regular ministry, and remain at Collegeport through this period of growth. “Third, the position I am about to take up entails a great deal of publicity work to which I have given most of my training and in which I have had most experience. “The opportunities of the new position are great and the need urgent. Many ministers would be glad of the opportunity of serving in a community united in its religious work, hence it should not be difficult to secure a new pastor. “I want to express my deep gratitude to the people of Collegeport and to those at Citrus Grove, whom I will also ask to release me, for their staunch support of my work here and for their exceeding kindness and graciousness to us in the past three years.

Elizabeth Ellen Peek Holmes On July 25, 2022, Elizabeth P. Holmes left this world and went to be with her Lord. We hope he blocked off enough time for the check in! Elizabeth, or Tizzy, as her friends knew her, was born on July 1, 1934, to John and Naomi Peek of Port Arthur, TX. She was the oldest of three children. Her brothers, Jesse B. Peek III and John Peek, preceded her in death. Tiz married her high school sweetheart Dick Holmes on August 14, 1952. A very talented seamstress, she created and sewed her wedding dress and was a stunning bride. She and Dick lived across the country as he worked as a Presbyterian minister and then an ophthalmic salesman, spending their last years together in Austin. They had two children, Ginny and Rick. Tiz worked as an accountant and loved her job. But most of all, she loved people. She made and kept lifelong friends. She loved to play games, sew, garden, travel, and spend time with friends and family. Tiz was a force to be reckoned with. She stood by her thoughts and opinions, was fiercely loyal, and loved large. She faced many health roadblocks, in later years, but she surmounted them all. After Dick’s passing, she moved to Beaumont to be near family. She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter, husband, and two brothers. A wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother, known as Gram, she leaves behind four granddaughters Kristen Elliott of Baytown, TX, Katie Martin of Beaumont, TX, Angela Neudecker of Franklin, TN, and Amber Malagic of North Palm Beach, FL. Steve Kerr Reverend Steve C. Kerr, 95, of Beaumont, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2025, at Harbor Hospice, Beaumont. Born in Beaumont in November of 1929, Steve was the youngest of six siblings to Steven Carey Kerr and Jessie Bell Whiting Kerr, and he grew up working at places like ABC Grocery Store and the hardware store downtown. He graduated from Beaumont High School and worked as a pipe fitter for the Magnolia Petroleum Corporation before joining the Marine Corps. He served in Korea, earning several honors including a Purple Heart. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1953, he returned to Beaumont to attend Lamar University, with the goal of becoming a minister. In 1958, Steve married Bobbie Brown, also of Beaumont. After graduating from Lamar with a Bachelor's Degree in sociology, Steve and Bobbie moved to Austin so he could attend Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and lived in the on-campus housing development affectionately known as "the leper colony." Steve graduated in 1966 and took his first call to serve the First Presbyterian Church in Haynesville, Louisiana that year, remaining there until 1970. He then served in Jennings, Louisiana, where his son Reid was born. Steve and the Kerrs served in Jennings from 1970 through 1975, then moved to Bonham, Texas, where he served at the First Presbyterian Church through 1983. From there, he served at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Carthage, Texas, through 1987. They served at the First Presbyterian Church in Haskell, Texas, through 1995, when Steve retired. In 1999, Steve's granddaughter, Emily, was born. That retirement didn't last long, though. After returning to Beaumont, Steve served churches in the Golden Triangle area as an interim and fill-in pastor from 1995 through 2020, serving in Vidor, Silsbee, Orange, and Beaumont before finally retiring from the ministry at the age of 90, due to the pandemic. Steve is preceded in death by his mother, father, five siblings and their spouses. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bobbie; son, Reid; daughter-in-law, Kimberly; and granddaughter, Emily. Over the 95 years of his life, Steve was a minister, Marine, volunteer soccer and baseball coach, gardener, published poet, summer Bible school and church camp counselor, Christmas fudge and Kerr chili maker, dog lover, barber shop quartet singer, fisherman, hole-in-one golfer, Uno card shark, and multiple time fantasy football champion. He loved his family, fresh tomatoes, Westerns, football, and laughter. His soundtrack was everything from the Gaithers to Jim Reeves to Anne Murray. He never met a stranger.
He will be missed by his family, friends, and the
churches he served along the way. A gathering of Reverend Kerr's family and friends will begin at 12:30 p.m. with his funeral service at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Pioneer Presbyterian Church, 3750 East Lucas, Beaumont. A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Elizabeth Ann "Beezie" Lang Cooper will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, at Saint Stephen Presbyterian Church, 2700 McPherson. Born on May 7, 1931 in Knoxville, Tennessee, Beezie was the daughter of Reverend Dr. Cecil and Ann Elizabeth Young Lang. Mrs. Lang died soon after childbirth. As the daughter of a recently widowed Presbyterian minister, Beezie learned to adapt to new homes, different caretakers, friends, and schools during her childhood. After graduating from Highland Park High School, she attended Austin College, her father's alma mater. While there, she met Joseph Rogers Cooper, they fell in love and were married on September 1, 1950. Beezie's first-hand knowledge and experience of the nature of parish ministry prepared her for life as the wife of a Presbyterian minister. With calm confidence, she bore three children, continued her education, established loving and stable home environments, and sought care for her son with what was then considered to be an intellectual disability, but much later determined to be autism spectrum disorder. Beezie immersed herself in the churches and communities Joe served. Beezie completed her education at the University of Houston and Angelo State University in the field of pastoral care and counseling. She served as the Executive Director and Regional Director of the Lung Association office in San Angelo, Texas, as well as in El Paso, Texas, and as a counselor at the Pastoral Care and Counseling Center of Dallas and in San Angelo. In retirement, Beezie continued to support organizations and activities of importance and interest, served as a deacon, and a Stephen Minister, sang in the church choir, and participated and taught in church classes and groups. She also participated in and helped to plan retreats, both locally and at Mo Ranch. An engaging conversationalist, Beezie was also contemplative and looked forward to retreating to the "quiet house" at Laity Lodge in the Hill Country on several occasions. As she has now departed human life, Beezie will be remembered lovingly by her family and those whose lives were touched, influenced, or shaped by this remarkable person. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Cecil H. Lang Jr. In addition to her children, Robert Glenn Cooper, Carol Zdeba and her husband, Don, and Marie Hoffman and her husband, Charles, Beezie is survived by four grandchildren, Benjamin Zdeba and Michelle, Kelsey Zdeba Barnes and Trevor, Anne Smith and Dan, and Jules Hoffman and Olive; and five great-grandchildren, Eli, Riley and Jack Smith, and Francesca and Gabriella Zdeba. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Saint Stephen Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or to the Alzheimer's Association, since both Beezie and Joe's lives were affected by this disease. Requiescat in Pace

Lewis and Lula Turner Kilgore in Jennings, Louisiana, on August 19,
1928.
Jane Gladden Kilgore It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jane Gladden Kilgore, age 97, on August 24, 2026. Born on August 4, 1929, Jane lived a long, meaningful life filled with family, friendship, and countless cherished memories. While she called several places home over the years, she spent much of her life as a proud Texan. She formed friendships wherever life took her, with each chapter bringing new experiences and people who became part of the story of her remarkable life. Most recently, Jane resided in Lexington, KY, with her son and daughter-in-law. She became an active and beloved member of the Lexington Senior Center, where she quickly endeared herself both to the other members and staff and never missed a service at Second Presbyterian in Lexington and Preston Hollow in Dallas from home. In her early years, Jane was a devoted minister’s wife, a loving mother, a teacher, and a loyal friend to all she met. Her greatest joy was her family. As the loving mother of three sons, she devoted her life to her family and took immense joy in watching them grow and eventually create families of their own. She remained deeply involved in their lives and treasured the relationships she shared with each member of her family. Jane’s love was constant and unconditional. She was the family matriarch, bridging the gaps between generations and the different branches of her family. She cherished every opportunity to be together with those she loved. Those who knew Jane will remember her for her warm and caring spirit, her endlessly open heart, and the time and love she gave so freely to her family and friends. She always had kind words to say to and about others, and she never met a stranger. No one felt unloved in her presence. She had a special gift for seeing the good in people and making everyone feel valued, accepted, and appreciated exactly as they were. Jane leaves behind a lifetime of stories, lessons, and memories that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Duke Kilgore; her sister, Betty Gladden Hogg; and her brother, Sterling “Buck” Gladden. Jane is survived by her three sons, John (Kayla), Bill (Susan), and Michael (Malissa); her eight grandchildren Christopher, Stuart, Rachel, Laura, Miles, Mitchell, Spencer, and Emma; five great-grandchildren Josie, Merriweather, Hannah, Sophia and Sterling, and numerous other members of her extended family and circle of friends. Saturday, January 20, 2024 in the Bailey & Foster Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Horine officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bailey & Foster Funeral Home. William Stockton Blanton, Jr. was born on Sunday, December 8, 1929 in Thomasville, GA to loving parents William Stockton Blanton, Sr. and Myrtle Lee Watson. He began his Christian journey at a very early age with the support of his patents and under the tutelage of the First Presbyterian Church in Thomasville, GA. Doug confirmed his parents' vows around the age of twelve at First Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood, MO. After graduating high school in 1948, he perfected his skills as a multi-talented entertainer.*Let's not call him "Frank" or "Perry" but Doug was a silky singer and a smooth dancer.* Doug's hobbies were flying, golf, fishing, singing and hunting. He had a deep love for food & fellowship with friends and family. He loved animals of all kinds. Doug and Jeanette were married in 1950 and parented four children: Gail, Vincent, Woody and Lee. This union lasted for twenty-eight years. May 15, 1981 Doug married Linda Ann Harris. His love was evident for Linda and son Kasey Jot. This endearing love continued to grow and flourish over the next forty years. Expressing his comedic side, Doug often teased Linda by saying, "I only married you because I fell in love with your son Kasey." William Stockton Blanton, Jr. considered his ministry as a calling. For over sixty years, he was a dedicated and devoted servant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Gail Blanton Peacock.
