According to the National Geographic Society's new Song and Garden Birds of North America, "The yellow heads sing a harsh jumble of notes ending in a rasping buzz. The songs are accompanied by twisting and writhing as if the birds were in agony." (Twist anyone?)

Well that's about all of the news for this time. See you next week.

The W. L. Ellis family reunion was held at the Mopac on July 4 with approximately 100 present. Guests were from Selma, Alabama, San Marcos, Houston, Alvin, West Columbia, Angleton, Cleveland, Fulton, Baytown, Bay City, Palacios and Collegeport. Everyone enjoyed a covered dish dinner.

I hope that everyone had a nice 4th of July. Just about everyone that has summer camps in this area were down. Fishing, swimming, boating, and barbecue were enjoyed by all. Some just relaxed and tried to beat the heat, because believe me it was plenty hot between the thunder showers.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Norwood, the Dan Williams, Dorothy and George Monroe all of Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Slaughter of Bay City and the Jack Bullingtons all enjoyed a delicious chicken barbecue July 2 at the Dan Williams summer place.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dreher, Kathy and Frank Jr. of Rockdale were here for the 4th weekend. Mr. Dreher caught six nice red fish at Oyster Lake weighing from 3 to 5 pounds each.

Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Grayson of Houston brought Chili Saunders back to Oyster Lake, July 3. Saunders plans on staying down for a few weeks to do a little red fishing up in the lake.

Live bait at most of the bait camps has been scarce for the past few weekends. Most fishermen have to use frozen bait or lures. But there were some nice reds, trout and a few flounder taken at Oyster Lake and some nice croakers, drum and a few rat reds taken near Hansen's Bait Camp on Tres-Palacios River at Red Bluff.

Lately it seems like the portion of Farm to Market road 1095 south of Tin Top has become an open range for cattle. These cattle are a great menace to the people who travel this road. On several occasions they have caused near accidents and on one occasion several days ago caused a very serious wreck.

Due to the dark color of these cattle and the high grass along the highway it is often impossible for night drivers to see these cattle.

Since we do have a stock law in Texas, why couldn't something be done about these loose cattle before there are more serious accidents and possibly a loss of lives.

We are very proud to announce that Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blackwell have opened a nice grocery, hardware store and filling station. This will be the first store we have had here since hurricane Carla paid us a visit in September 1961 taking with her the grocery operated many years by Mr. and Mrs. Ben Mowery. The Blackwells have just about anything in their store you need--hardware, paint, fishing tackle, ice or what have you. So if you are over our way going fishing, hunting, or just driving around, stop in and see our new store, have a cup of coffee, and if you don't see what you want, ask for it and I just bet they'll have it. Best of luck to you Mr. and Mrs. Blackwell, it is so nice to have a grocery in Collegeport again.

The heavy rains have already brought out the nutria along the rice canals the past few weeks. In case you have not seen one of these, they are aquatic beaver like rodents that grow to be from 1 1/2 to 2 feet in length. They originally came from South America and are strictly vegetarians. They are very destructive to rice crops, because they go underneath the water and eat the roots of the rice. They swim with their young on their back like the mother 'possum. The young nutria are born with a very good set of teeth and can start "rooting" for himself the day it is born.
