Hope everybody had a nice Christmas and the old year of 1967 was good to you and yours. We are getting into 1968 and with the starting of the new year we are reminded of income taxes, elections and for the school kids, the month of January means mid-term exams.

There is a lot of sickness in our community and all over the state. If you have to be out, take care and if you have this flu type illness, stay in.

We wish a speedy recovery to the following: Mrs. Rowena Kay, Mr. and Mrs. Speck Long, Adolph Genzer, Teddy Pennington and Cooney LaCroix.

The meeting of the Collegeport Area Volunteer Fire Department that was to have been held January 8 for the election of officers was postponed due to the weather so the election will be held at the regular meeting Monday, January 15. You all come.

Jack Bullington was in Wharton January 3 for a check-up with the eye specialist. The report was good.

Congratulations to the newly-weds Mr. and Mrs. Teddy Pennington who married December 27. Frances Bradford of Bay City. The couple are making their home in Houston where the groom is employed. This past weekend they visited his mother, Mrs. Mamie Pennington.

Happy birthday to the following who celebrated their birthday recently, Vic Gallaher, Mrs. Elizabeth Roesler, Martha Thompson and Francis Rapstain.

Recent visitors of the Jack Bullington were Mr. and Mrs. Hank McDermott of Bay City, Mrs. Elsie Williams and Mrs. Nolan Norwood of Houston and E. J. Miller of Palacios.

Don’t forget January 31 is the deadline for registering to vote.

Fishing was good the early part of last week even though the weather was a shade nippy. There was some nice trout taken on Tres-Palacios River over the week-end. One man from El Campo caught over 100 trout at Red Bluff—some of ‘em were 4 to 5 pounders.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bullington, Willie Rapstain and Mrs. Emma Foltyn caught 37 red fish at Oyster Lake bridge on Wednesday. The Lee Slaughters of Bay City had 22 reds, and caught many more that were not keepers.

There was still much sickness around and we wish a speedy recovery for all.

Week-end guests of the Johnny Williams were Mrs. William’s son Bobby Fowler, and his girl friend, Miss Ellen Livingston, both of Waco, Texas.

A bridal shower for Mrs. Teddy Pennington was held January 12th at the Mopac. Some 25-30 people attended even through the weather was very cold. She received many useful and beautiful gifts.

Belated birthday greetings to Monty Ward who was 15 years old Jan. 12th and to Miss Debbie Ward who celebrated her 18th birthday January 7th.

The Collegeport Area Volunteer Fire Department held its regular meeting Monday, Jan. 15. The following officers were elected: Fire Chief, Dwayne Corporon; Assistant Chief, Gustave Franzen; Secretary-Treasurer, Mrs. Ethel Holsworth; Trustee, Russell Corporon.

“People are funny: They always want the front of the bus, the back of the church and the middle of the road.”

See ya next week. Have any news call me at 824-2195.

I am sure everyone has had their share of rain. Don’t know just how many inches we had here but it was more than enough.

There is still some sickness in the community. Those confined to their homes are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Law, Gustave Franzen, Meloni Wells, Mr. and Mrs. George Hetjmanek and the M. A. Ellis family. We wish a speedy recovery to all.

Mrs. Ida Mae Franzen received a card from Rev. A. G. Fitzgerald stating that Mrs. Fitzgerald had suffered a stroke and was in a coma. She is in Heights Hospital, Room 228 in Houston. He would be glad to see any of their friends from down this way in case you are in Houston. A speedy recovery to Mrs. Fitzgerald also.

Happy birthday to Mrs. Margie Sherrer of Tin Top who celebrated her birthday Jan. 14.

Mr. and Mrs. Dick Corporon of Citrus Grove received word that their son, Weldon, who has been stationed in Pakistan with the armed forces, is now enroute home to spend leave with his family.

A Pink and Blue shower was held January 18 for Mrs. Earl “Spooky” Halfen at the Mopac.

We wish the best of luck to the Halfens who will be moving to Austin next week where Earl will be a student at the University of Texas.

Weekend visitors of the Verner Bowers were Mr. and Mrs.  S. R. Flewellen and Mr. and Mrs. John McConnell of Bellaire and Mrs. Juliet Halfen of Houston.

Fishing was not good on Wednesday so Jack Bullington and Willie Rapstain spent the day rattlesnake hunting. At the end of the day they had 27 rattlers, six skunks and one o’possum. Bruce Kay got eight large rattlers the same day. Not bad for one day’s hunt? But for me I’d prefer to hunt some other kind of game.
