Collegeport Woman's Club Minutes

1935-1940

1935

Secretary’s Annual Report For the Year 1934

Given at the annual meeting on January 10, 1935

Turning back the pages of the year 1934, we find that the Collegeport Woman’s Club has “carried on” well and the efforts put forth by our small, but faithful, membership may have given more forceful help to each one of us than we even realize for the last year has been one of bewilderment and history.

Loyalty means much to us as a club and individuals also. Therefore we have been ready and willing to do whatever came to us to be done and the sum total of the year’s work shows that we were smilin’ thru.

9 regular and 2 called meetings have been held with an average attendance of 10 members.

During the summer months, the Club met with the Union and the King’s Daughters.

The program committee has done splendid work in presenting interesting and instructive programs which were as follows as to subject.
Better Homes and Gardens
Legislation
Women’s Organizations
Our First Day at School
Thanksgiving

One meeting was a memorial to Mrs. V. R. Haisley who was a life-member, but, passed on in Dec. 1933.

Miss Carter was present on two afternoons and gave interesting talks on the Girl Reserves organization.

On May 5th, the Club entertained the County Federation of Women’s Clubs.

A year’s subscription to the Federation News was taken.

A reception to the teachers was given on Sept. 17th.

A contribution made to the County Health Committee.

The annual purchase of a 1st Aid Kit for the school was made.

The Club also made it possible to place several new books on the library shelves.

These activities were small and few for a year’s work, but “Mighty Oaks From Little Acorns Grow.”

So let us not feel disheartened, but with renewed efforts on the back of each individual, may we resolve to accomplish more in the coming year by 1935, which commences here to greet us with a smiling face.

Respectfully Submitted, Mrs. Harry Austin Clapp  Secy

1936

Annual Report of Woman’s Club For the Year 1935

Beginning Jan. 10, 1935 up to date Jan. 9, 1936

Our Club has held nine regular meetings, 1 executive meeting and 2 called meetings.

The month of September no meeting was held.

Splendid programs have been prepared by the program chairman, Mrs. Batchelder.

Representatives from on Club have attended the following meeting in the interest of Y. W. C. A. Councils

In Bay City on the subject of Child Labor Amendment when Miss Maurice? a speaker from the Y. W. C. A. office in Houston was present.

The District Y. W. C. A. meeting in Bay City in May and the Fall meeting of Y. W. C. A. Councils in Freeport in October.

Delegates have attended all the County Federation meetings but one, that held at Wadsworth in December. In September the Club tendered a public reception to the School Faculty at Mopac House.

Attending the October meeting, were the Girl Reserves and Miss Carter.

At a later date a called meeting was held for the express purpose of giving into the work of the “Girl Reserves” for this year. Miss Carter being present, and presenting the work. At this time Miss Ann Ross was appointed by the Council as Girl Reserve sponsor and Mrs. Corporon as assistant.

In May the Club assisted the “Girl Reserves” in giving Miss Nell Harris a handkerchief shower, in appreciation of the services as G. R. sponsor the later half of the year.

On May 4 we had the privilege and pleasure of serving the luncheon on opening day of Mopac House.

Since that time we have enjoyed the use of the kitchen of Mopac House, and the new Reading Room given to our Library by the erection of this new building.

During the year we have had one visit from our county nurse, Mrs. Martin [Martyn], who gave a very helpful talk on the health project of our county.

Financially we have not been able to meet all obligations as yet, but hope to do so in the near future. We received as a gift from the Gulf Sulphur Co. last March $50.00. One half of this amount $25.00 going to the local G. R. work and $25.00 to District Y. W. C. A.

We have paid Federation dues $2.50, and to County Health work $3.00.

Have provided First Aid supplies for school to the amount of $2.20.

Our annual Christmas Party was held at the home of Mrs. Vera Batchelder, and goes down as our “red letter day.”

There were 12 members & visitors present and a lovely live spirit in visiting and Christmas contest games. At the close of the delightful afternoon, the hostess served delicious refreshments consisting of fruit salad, whipped cream, angel food cake & coffee. As we took our leave we felt very much indebted to our charming hostess for another lovely Christmas Party, and hope as the years go on and new members take up the work, that our Christmas Party will always be in the Club program.

Report accepted.

Respectfully Submitted, Mrs. Liggett
