Graveside services for former Bay Citian Herman Gardner 95, of Bryan will be held 11 a. m. Friday at Eastview Cemetery with the Rev. A. H. Pointer officiating. Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel. Mr. Gardner was born in 1897 and died July 26, 1992 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. Survivors include six grandchildren, Robert Flye and A. C. Flye of Dallas, Jo Ann White, Irena Gardner, Charlie Sneed and Arvester Sneed, all of Bay City, as well as a host of great and great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie Barnes Gardner, and their two daughters, Myrtle Flye and Izola Sneed. Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City. Kermit Gardner Funeral services for Kermit Gardner, 61, of Bay City will be held 11 a. m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. L. C. Cunningham officiating. Burial will be at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, 1300 Duncan St. He was born July 8, 1931 in Bay City to the late General and Ella Dugard Gardner and he died Aug. 22, 1992 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Houston. Mr. Gardner was a member of the Baptist church and a veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include one son, Murray Gardner of Bay City; four sisters, Jessie Mae Amey and Barbara Ellis of Bay City, Mary Williams of San Francisco, Calif. and Helen Gordon of Blessing and two grandchildren. Pallbearers will be J. W. Brown, Carl Ellis, Curtis Ellis, Murray Gardner, Ira Gordon Jr. and Ira Gordon III. Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home in Bay City.

Funeral services for Solomon Gaskin, 85, of Houston will be held 11 a. m. Thursday at Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City with the Rev. W. J. Gaskin officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation hours are until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Gaskin was born Sept. 21, 1906 to Alfred and Agusta Green Gaskin in Inez and died Feb. 15, 1992 at Danforth Hospital in Texas City. A former resident of Bay City, Mr. Gaskin resided in Houston and was affiliated with the Baptist Church. Survivors include five daughters, Selena Gaskin Boone, Ernestine Outley, Lillie Stevens, Destiney O’Neal and Mrs. Cynthia Stevenson; five sons, the Rev. Rudolph Martin, Sam Laddie, Larry Berry, Lionell Laddie and Darrell Lockett; two sisters, Mrs. Lurella Wyatt and Mrs. Althea Barber; four brothers, the Rev. L. C. Gaskin, the Rev. W. J. Gaskin, Clifford Gaskin and Hoover Gaskin; 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Richard George, Jr. Funeral services for Richard George, Jr., 61, of Bay City will be held Thursday, May 30, 2002 at 2 pm at Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City with the Rev. K.J. Griggs, eulogist. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Wednesday until 9 pm in the Dunca-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel. He was born in Cedar Lane, Texas, Tuesday, July 16, 1940, to Richard George Sr. and Anolus Sorrell George, and passed away Friday, May 24, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center, Wharton, Texas. He was a graduate of A.G. Hilliard High School and a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was employed by Phillips 66 Petroleum Co., Old Ocean, Texas for 27 years. Among his civic involvement included membership with Gulf Coast Masonic Lodge No. 272. Known by all a “Della” and “Fox”, he will be missed by all mankind. Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Bessie Mitchell George of Bay City, six children, Tracy Diana George, Tracy Diante Roberts and the Rev. Charles Devette George and Richard George, III, and Reginald Woods all of Bay City, and Carmia Green and Rev. Larry of Boling; seven grandchildren which include Chadwick, whom he reared, 10 sisters, Elizabeth Callis and Levi, of Bay City Edna Mae Bibbs and Bernice Young, both of Dallas, Linda Gail Sanders, Anola Faye Brinkley and Mary Gopson, all of Houston, Jean Ann Higgins and Jerry, and Beverly Ann Fields, all of Brazoria, Augustine Morgan of Louisiana, and Tina Blackmon of Ft. Worth; and 5 brothers, Cunnie Dale (and Margie) and Rev. James George and Rose and Joseph George, all of Bay City, Roosevelt George and Connie of Sweeny, and Edward George & Virgie of LA. One uncle, Lee Sorrell of Bay City, and one great-aunt, Elease Moore of Bay City, also an enormous family of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a family of many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and four brothers. Active pallbearers will be Robert Beverly, Michael Brinkley, Carlton Brooks A.J. Kind, caring, loving, dancer, strong, funny, and faithful Bessie Mae Mitchell of Bay City, Texas passed away on April 28, 2020 at the age of 75. Bessie was born on March 27, 1945 in Burr, Texas to Taylor Mitchell and Francis Rogers. She was reared as a baby by Pinkney and Albirda Woodard, and later on by William Sr. and Eula Courtney. On August 27, 1962 she married Richard D. George Jr. “Della”. They were blessed in this marriage to have three children, Tracy Dianna Jackson, Tracy Diante George-Roberson, and Richard Darnell George III. Their fourth blessing was De’Vette M. George. Bessie was on the track team and WON state two consecutive years. She graduated in 1963 from Hilliard High School. She accepted Christ at an early age at Mother Zion Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, was a member of the usher board and hospitality team. Bessie had three “church husbands” and one “church” boyfriend. She loved LIFE!!! Bessie was known all over the county for her hugs, laughter, giving freely, being dependable, loving, being a friend, her great dance skills, her big bright smile, and her love for her family and Church. She brought a smile, humor and those smooth dance moves to every event. Bessie supported organizations, charity events, fundraisers, etc. She would volunteer physically and financially. Bessie worked at Bay City High School and McAllister Junior High for numerous years in the Food Service Department. Before Michelle Obama suggested each child to eat healthy, you had BESSIE GEORGE in the school cafeteria making sure that EACH CHILD WAS FED. No one went without a meal on Bessie’s watch. She was also a housekeeper and caregiver for many years; sometimes caring for two generations. Bessie was a caregiver to numerous children in Matagorda County and was known for her love, compassion, and sweet spirit. She continued to have a relationship with the children she cared and loved for who was then able to pass down that same love to their children. Bessie was a friend to everyone and a giver all her life. She will be missed by so many!!! She is survived by her children,Tracy Dianne Jackson (Thomas Jr.), Tracy Diante George-Roberson, and Richard Darnell George III (Charmaine Henderson), Dr. De’Vette M. George, and stepson, Reginald Woods (Suzanne); grandchildren, Chadwick George, Ebone’ Williams (Billy), Kieran George, Antwune Southall, Ikala Marshall (Donald), Boyd Eaton, Chaasmon Eaton, Ashton George, Cameron Alexander, Jay George, Sasha George, Demerius Nibbe, Kaleb Norris, and Lieutenant Taylor “Missy” Horne. Bessie’s family that she adopted into her heart, Laney and Tanna Fair; Siblings, Charles Mitchell, Lee Mitchell, Leroy Mitchell. Brothers and Sisters she was reared with, Dianne Courtney-Belle, William Courtney Jr., Theotis Courtney, ONeil Courtney, Lavender Courtney-Watters, and Vivian Courtney. In-laws, Elizabeth Callis (Levi), Roosevelt George Sr. (Nina), Rev. James George Sr. (Juanita), Joseph George Sr. (Barbara), Edna Mae Bibbs, Anolus Faye Sorrell, Jean Ann Higgins (Jerry), Beverly Ann Fields, Mary Gipson and Margie Dale. Bessie has a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, cousins, and friends. Mrs. George was born Aug. 10, 1907 in Allenhurst to the late Louella and Peter Scott and died Sept. 6, 1992 at the Methodist Hospital in Houston. She was a member of the Baptist church, Heroines of Jericho & Grand Order and Court of Callanthe. She was employed for many years as an insurance agent for Atlanta Life Insurance Co. Survivors include a sister, Ida Bell Brown Irving of Bay City; a brother, Sidney Frank Scott of Texas City and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Eliza Scott, Laura Williams, Martha Jackson and Mary Lou Reed and two brothers, Walter Scott and Nathaniel Clay. Pallbearers will be Robert Dixon, T. H. Edison, Cleveland Fields Jr., Oscar Moore, Lewis Morgan and the Rev. James Roberson. Honorary pallbearers are Eddie F. Mrs. Gibson was born Dec. 22, 1933 in Bay City to Selcis Jim and Margie Ree Johnson Brown and died April 26, 1992 in Bay City. Mrs. Gibson is affiliated with the Baptist church. Survivors include her mother; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Shelia A. Gibson of San Francisco; four grandchildren, Christina Gibson, Phillicia Gibson, Kimberly Gibson, Courtney Gibson and Anthony Gibson, all of San Francisco, grandfather, Chester Johnson of Bay City; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Visitation hours will be until 6:30 p. m. today at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home chapel, and a wake will be held from 7 to 9 p. m. today at Bethel Baptist Church. Mrs. Giles was born Feb. 4, 1911 to Henry and Egenia Simpson Tellerson in Bay City and died Feb. 1, 1992 at Matagorda General Hospital. Mrs. Giles was affiliated with the Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Giles McNiel of North Carolina and Rosa Giles Nicholson of Dallas; four sons, Jesse Crawford, Cornelius Giles Jr. and the Rev. Gilbert Giles, all of Houston, and Ernest Crawford of Los Angeles; two sisters, Thelma Gullette of Conroe and Carrie Lewis of Bay City; a brother, Tilton Tellerson of Bay City; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Godfrey Gipson, 71, of Bay City will be held 2 p. m. Saturday at Enterprise Baptist Church with the Rev. A. H. Pointer officiating. Burial will be at Eastview Cemetery. Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, 1300 Duncan. Mr. Gipson was born July 14, 1921 in Simmesport, La. to the late Willie Gipson and Elvira Thomas-Gipson and he died Dec. 25, 1992 at Hermann Hospital in Houston. He was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include his companion, Lillie Mae Redd of Bay City; a daughter, Mary Gipson; a son, Kaleb Christian Beverly of Bay City; three brothers, Dixie and William Gipson of Bay City and Johnnie Gipson of Simmesport, La.; three sisters, Julie Hampton and Lee Anna Valant of Simmesport, La. and Ophelia Payne of Houston and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Anthony Gipson; a sister, Betty Brown and three brothers, Willie Gipson, Hillary Gipson and Cleveland Gipson. Pallbearers will be Oscar Brown, Richard George Jr., Roosevelt George Jr., Roosevelt George, Jimmie Gipson, Clarence Jackson, O’Hara Laws, Cestrakiah Lewis and Joseph Sorrell. William Gipson Funeral services for Mr. William Gipson, age 70, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, March 29, 1997, at 2 pm at Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City, with Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Friday until 9 pm in the chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and Saturday from 1 to 2pm at the church. He was born in Odenburg, Louisiana, Wednesday, August 4, 1926, to Johnny Gipson and Elvira Thomas Gipson, and passed away Monday, March 24, 1997, in the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Jesse Smith, Houston. Gipson’s upbringing, early religious affiliation and education was obtained in Odenburg, Louisiana. “Gip” as he was known, was admired as a kind person by all he met. Because of his friendly character, he will be missed by family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elcena Martin Gipson of Bay City and seven daughters and five sons-in-law. Mrs. Shirley Smith (& Jesse), and Mrs. Linda Henderson (& James), all of Houston, Mrs. Brenda Franklin, Mrs. Janice Carter and Mrs. Arlene Smith (& Ira) all of Bay City, Mrs. Sandra Brown (& Curtis) of Markham, and Mrs. Barbara White (& Darrington) of Kingsville. Also one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Gipson (& Laurie) of Houston. He leaves also two sisters, Mrs. Ophelia Payne of Houston, and Mrs. Leanna Valent of Odenburg, Louisiana; and two brothers, Dixie Gipson of Bay City, and Johnny Gipson. Jr. of Odenburg, Louisiana. Also 15 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and a family of many, many friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Gipson, two sisters, Judy Hampton and Betty Brown, and four brothers, Will Gipson, Cleveland Gipson, Hilary Brown and Godfrey Gipson. Serving as active pallbearers will be Donald Bratcher, O’Neil Courtney, Willie Fisher, Prince Lewis, Ed Smith and Edwin Williams.
