Bernice Brooks Hardeman Funeral services for Bernice Brooks Hardeman were held today at the AME Church in Denison, Texas. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery, Bay City, on Wednesday. Mrs. Hardeman will lie in state at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel from noon to 4 pm Wednesday. Graveside services will be at 4 pm at Eastview Cemetery. Mrs. Hardeman, a native of Bay City, was a teacher in the Bay City Independent School District. She was married to the late E. T. Hardeman, former coach and principal of Terrell High School in Denison. At the time of her death, she was a day care supervisor and a Grayson County precinct chairman. Survivors include four daughters, Bernice Eugenia Hardeman, Gwendolyn Hardeman Hill and Greta L. Cherry, all of Houston, and Cecelia Caster of Denison.

John Harrison Funeral services for Mr. John Harrison, age 84, of Bay City, were held today at 1 pm at the Mother Zaion Baptist Church in Bay City with Rev. K. J. Griggs officiating. Burial followed at Eastview Cemetery in Bay City. Harrison was born in Ashwood on June 24, 1912, to James Harrison and Delia Allen Harrison, and passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 1997, at the home of his niece, Viola Johnson in Bay City. He was the youngest of seven children born to the Harrison family. At a young age, he was baptized by his father, Rev. James Harrison, and became a member of the Free System Baptist Church in Van Vleck. Upon moving to Bay City, he and his brother, Washington, united with Mother Zion Baptist Church, where served faithfully. Harrison, his brother “Wash” along with other young men of Bay City vicinity, organized the famous men’s singing group known as The Gospel Travelers, who, for more that 40 years, sang before church audiences and on the KIOX Radio Station. Their heartfelt singing resulted in many men and women accepting Christ as Lord and Savior. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Bertha Johnson, a devoted niece, Mrs. Viola Johnson of Bay City, as well as other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a family of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Odessa Ross Harrison, his parents and siblings. Serving as active pallbearers will be the Brotherhood of Mother Zion Baptist Church and the Gulf Coast Masonic Lodge #272 where he was a member, as well as Sam Brown, Emerson White, Jr. John D. Fisher and Hewitt Wiggins. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Layman’s the Ushers and Nursers’ organization, The Gospel Travelers of this vicinity, which include Enoch Casey, Lawyer Fields, Sr. John Aliniece, Cornelious Giles and Rev. E. S. Fields. Arrangements with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home. Daily Tribune, February 18, 1997 Courtesy of Faye Cunningham Odessa Harrison Services will be held for Mrs. Odessa Harrison, 73, of Bay City, 1 pm Saturday at Enterprise Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. A. H. Pointer. Harrison died November 15, 1982 at Matagorda General Hospital. Survivors include husband, John Harrison of Bay City; sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Earnest of Houston, Mrs. Zelma Whitaker of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Frannie Simpson of Texas City; brothers, Ben Ross of Dickerson, Snow Ross of Detroit, Michigan, Shelly Ross of Beaumont; a host of other relatives. Visitation hours are today (Friday) from 4-9 pm in the chapel. Burial will follow services at Eastview Cemetery. Arrangements with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.
