Rev. Andrew Houston Pointer

Funeral services for Rev. A. H. Pointer, 87, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, August 15, 1998 at 11 a. m. at Enterprise Baptist Church in Bay City, Rev. J. Weldon Gilbert, pastor, Rev. H. L. Hawkins, Jr., presiding, and Rev. R. N. Pointer, eulogist. Burial will follow at teh Eastview Cemetery in Bay City.

Visitation will be Friday from 6 p. m. until 9 p. m. at the Enterprise Baptist Church, and Saturday from 10 until 11 a. m. at the church also.

Andrew Houston Pointer was born in Evergreen, La., Sunday, Aug. 14, 1910, to Rev. Newman Pointer and Emma Beverly Pointer, and passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998 in Bay City.

Pointer was reared in Bunkie, La., and moved to Houston at age nine. There, he attended Jack Yates High School, and graduated as Class Salutatorian. Later, he attended Huston-Tillitson College in Austin.

His religious aspirations included his responding to the call of Christ, which asked, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us," by answering, "Here I am, send me."

His first sermon was preached in 1929 at Rose Hill Baptist Church, Houston, under the leadership of Rev. Sykes. In 1950, he accepted the call to serve at Enterprise Missionary Baptist church in Bay City.

Under Pointer's leadership, the church grew spiritually, numerically, and financially. Many programs were added, and six ministers and 17 deacons were ordained. His leadership at Enterprise spans approximately 40 years.

"Reverend," as he was known, touched many lived during his earthly giving. In his passing, he will be greatly missed.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Andrea Pointer-Spencer and Clydell of Austin, and Sher'ri Pointer-Stone and Dorsey of Bay City; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Andrew Pointer, Jr. and Janell of Bay City, Carl Pointer and Rosa of Austin, Russell Pointer and Wanda of Van Vleck, and Michael Pointer of Bay City; a god-daughter, Debra M. Hill of Baytown; mother-in-law, Mary Hayes-Jones of Dickerson; 38 grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren, four sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law, cousins and a family of friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ola Pointer, Aug. 6, 1995, a daughter Dorothy Mae Pointer, and a son Eddie N. Pointer, one brother and nine sisters.

Active pallbearers will be his sons and sons-in-law.

Honorary pallbearers will include the ministers of the South Texas area.

At Rev. Pointer's request, in lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Enterprise Baptist Church.

Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home.

Ola Mae Pointer

Funeral services for Mrs. Ola Mae Pointer, age 63, of Bay City, will be held Saturday, August 12th, at 11:00 A. M., at the Enterprise Baptist Church in Bay City, with Rev. Herbert L. Hawkins, officiating, and Rev. Kevin O. Johnson, presiding. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Bay City.

Visitation will be Friday until 9 P. M. in the Chapel of Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, and Saturday from 10 a. m. to 11 a. m. at Enterprise.

Mrs. Pointer was born Tuesday, April 12, 1932, in Blessing Texas, and died Sunday, August 6, 1995, in Bay City.

She held the prestigious position as “First Lady of Enterprise” for 40 years, by which she expressed exceptional, distinguished quality. She worked dutifully with Mission 11, the Educational Board and with the Sunday School as a teacher. In the Sanctuary Choir, her beautiful alto voice was in perfect harmony to all listeners. She was known to create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort whenever in the company of the Enterprise Christian family.

Her fraternal affiliations included memberships with the Olive Leaf Chapter #219—Order of the Eastern Star, and the Progressive Order of Pilgrims Pride of Bay City Sanctuary 41. She also volunteered as Pink Lady at Matagorda General Hospital for a number of years.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, the Rev. A. H. Pointer of Bay City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Andrea Pointer-Spencer (& Clydell) of Austin and Mrs. Sher’ri Pointer-Stone (& Dorsey) of Bay City, and three sons and two daughters-in-law, Carl (& Rosa) Pointer of Houston, Russell (& Wanda) Pointer of Van Vleck, and Michael Pointer of Beaumont. Also one step-daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Pointer-Hood of Anchorage, Alaska, and one step-son, Andrew Houston Pointer, Jr. of Tacoma, Washington.

She also leaves a god-daughter, Mrs. Debra M. Hill of Baytown, her mother, Mrs. Mary Hayes Jones of Dickinson and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ida Whitley Hayes of Bay City. Also four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Matthews of Mrs. Geneva Jones of Dickinson, Mrs. Annette Roberson of Houston, and Mrs. Florence Collins of Brenham; five brothers, Henry C. Jones, Jr. of Dickinson, Johnnie Stroman and J. R. Stroman, all of Houston.

Also five aunts, three uncles, nine grandchildren, Clydell Jr., LaTosha, David, Carla, Rozlyn, Rondalyn, Daniel, Joshua, Andrew; a very close friend, Mrs. Mary Love, a loving neighbor, Mrs. Margaret Gee, a host of nieces, nephews, an extended family of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father and step-father, Johnnie Stroman Sr., and Henry C. Jones, respectively, her grandfather, William Hayes, a step-son, Eddie Pointer and four brothers, Thomas Stroman, Ricky Stroman, Grady Stroman and Eugene Stroman.

Active pallbearers include her nephews, Mickey Jones, Bruce Matthews, Terrell Mangum, Charlie Robinson, Waymond Robinson Jr. and Ronald Simmons.

Honorary pallbearers include the Deacons of Enterprise Baptist Church.

Flower bearers will be the ministers’ wives, the Olive Leaf Chapter #219—OES and the Progressive Order of Pilgrims-Pride of Bay City Sanctuary 41.

Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home of Bay City.
