Resident 16 Years, Russell Kundinger Dies in Escondido
Retired mail carrier Russell R. Kundinger, 54, of 1702 Barbara Lane, Encinitas, died Saturday in an Escondido hospital. Kundinger worked for the post office department 14 years and lived in Encinitas for the last 16 years.
He had recently been given a retirement party by his fellow workers who presented him with a transistor radio. The wiener bake and potluck dinner party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Koon.
Rosary was recited Monday evening at the Encinitas Mortuary Chapel followed by Mass Tuesday morning at St. John’s Catholic Church in Encinitas.
Kundinger, a native of Chicago, Illinois, was a past officer and charter member or the San Luis Rey Council, Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of Carlsbad, past president of the Holy Names Society of St. John’s Church, and a member of the Encinitas Grange.
Survivors include his widow, Katherine M. Kundinger; three sons, Thomas P. and William Kundinger of Encinitas, and Robert M. Kundinger, with the U. S. Air Force in West Germany; a sister, Mrs. Arita Johnson of Illinois; and four grandchildren.

Encinitas – Katherine M. Kundinger, 93, died Wednesday March 28, 2001, at Las Villas de Carlsbad.
Born April 17, 1907, in Chicago, she lived in Encinitas for 56 years.
She worked as a secretary at the Paul Ecke Ranch in Encinitas for more than 25 years, and retired in 1975.
Her family was one of the original founders of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Encinitas, where she served as one of the early presidents of the Women’s Altar Society.
She was the charter secretary and a founding member of the St. John’s Parish Credit Union and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She was a volunteer with the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA and with the Hospice of the North Coast in Carlsbad and Encinitas. She was active with the Secular Order of Franciscans at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside.
Mrs. Kundinger was preceded in death by her husband, Russell R. Kundinger, in June 1962.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Bob and Jeanette Kundinger of San Marcos and Bill and Darrelyn Kundinger of Carlsbad; son Tom Kundinger and companion Fran Coccia of San Marcos; sister Loretta Adams of Escondido, 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 11:30 a. m. with Mass celebrated at noon, Wednesday, April 11, at St. John the Evangelist Church. A private interment is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Hospice of the North Coast, 5421 Avenida Encinas, Suite N, Carlsbad, CA 92008.
Eternal Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary is handling arrangements.
