John G. Legg (November 6, 1808 - November 11, 1897) married Mitilda Haney (1824 - 1882), and they were the parents of James Daniel "J. D.," born on March 6, 1847, who married Betty Jane Hamblin, born on November 12, 1858. J. D. Legg died in 1930 and Betty Jane Hamblin Legg died on January 28, 1943. [They are buried in Ashby Cemetery.]
James Daniel and Betty Jane Legg were the parents of:
John Don, born on December 3, 1878; unnamed infant, born on April 15, 1880; James Edwin, born on May 21, 1881; Minnie Mirtle, born on May 28, 1883; William Franklin, born on August 30, 1884; Roger Kay, born on July 11, 1886; Early Roy, born on June 16, 1888; Ivy Maudie, born on May 16, 1890; Ruby Mirl, born on August 20, 1892; Joe Mansford, born in 1894; unnamed infant born in 1895; Oliver Cecil, born on January 1, 1897; and Richard Herbert, born on October 8, 1898.
Roger K. Legg was born in Moffett, Texas, where his father, James D., was a farmer and owned and operated a cotton gin. He also owned and operated two threshing machines. When Roger was sixteen years old, his father shipped a threshing machine to Bay City, and Roger came with his father and a crew to work. At that time the Cane Belt Railroad only came to Bay City, but the material was on the location for the track to Matagorda. Mr. Legg moved his thresher across the Colorado River by ferry to the Moore Cortez Pumping Plant. The ferry was located just above the site of the present day bridge. They were able to get the thresher across the river, but because of nightfall they had to return to camp. That night a heavy rain fell upriver, and because of the raft in the river below Bay City, the river overflowed, and the crew had to swim their horses to get to the thresher which had been left on the riverbank. A small steam boat operated in the river, so the thresher was loaded back on the ferry, and the little steamer pulled it up the river. Farmers in the Markham area, with a team of sixteen mules pulled the thresher through the mud. Some of those who helped were Mr. McKissick, Captain Barnett, Mr. Sanders, and Mr. McGee. At that time the threshing crew consisted of about twenty-five men, at least eight wagons and teams, and about six good mules.
When Roger was nineteen, his father moved to Markham, and he left the rice farming and moved to Collegeport. He met and later married Viola B. Merck on November 26, 1912. He owned and operated the R. K. Legg Dray Line until 1917 when he moved to Kingsville with the railroad. In January 1925, Roger was employed by Texas Gulf Sulphur Company and worked there until he retired. Roger and Viola were the parents of one son, Henry R., born on July 17, 1914, in Collegeport. Roger and Viola made their home in Bay City for thirty-one years, and were members of the First Christian Church in Bay City. Later they resided in Houston.
Viola B. Merck was born on April 22, 1895, to Baulser Van Buren Merck and Sadie Barrow Moore (April, 1876 - 1940). Her grandparents were Edgar Maurice Bowie and Julia Isabella Eanes Moore.
Viola's brothers and sisters were:
Jessie Mildred, born on August 6, 1896, who married J. F. Kilpatrick; Bessie Bowie, born on January 1, 1898, who married Charles S. Wilson; Theora Eugenia, born on September 27. 1899, who married Rowan McRee; Elve Virginia, born on February 26, 1903, who married M. Jack Martin; John Maurice, born on August 29, 1901, who married Hazel Lowery; Gerald Moore, born on May 11, 1905, who married Panola Matsberger; and Dean Eanes, born on July 20, 1907, who married Dorothy Franzen.

married Stella Lettie Eastman in 1939, in Cedar Lane, Texas, the
daughter of Loren Rufus and Frances Eastman.

Funeral services for Early Roy Legg were held at 2 p. m. Saturday,
May 30, at the Palacios Funeral home with the Rev. Bobby Cardwell
officiating, assisted by the Rev. J. R. Gwin. Interment was in the
Palacios Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons, James
Daniel Legg, David Ray Legg, Dan Vernon Legg, Jesse A. Legg, Jr.,
Vernon Dean Legg and Billy Wayne Parker. Honorary pallbearers were
Dale Ray Legg and Johnnie Almon Parker.
The
son of the late James Daniel and Betty Jane Legg, he was born in
Moffat, Texas on March 16, 1888, the seventh of 13 children. He
moved to Matagorda County in 1905, farming rice with his father and
brothers in the Markham, Ashby, Simpsonville and Blessing
communities. He married Lela Bernice Evans in 1916 and they moved to
Ashby where he farmed cotton and corn and raised cattle. He served
as postmaster at Ashby for several years, also was school
superintendent for awhile.
In
1922 he moved to Hull, Texas, where he worked for four years. In
1926 he moved to Palacios and ran a dray line with D. D. Paulk. He
was a trustee or guard that brought the payroll during the time the
National Guard was encamped in Palacios. He helped build the
intracoastal canal and in later years he drove a transport truck for
Clarence Buller, George Curtis and the late Carroll Cairnes. He
moved to San Antonio in 1950 and worked at Fort Sam Houston,
retiring in 1953 when he returned to Palacios. He passed away in
Wagner General Hospital Thursday, May 28, 1970, after a lengthy
illness.
He is
survived by his wife; three sons, Ray Legg of Angleton, Dan Legg of
Rockdale and Rev. Jesse Legg of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Alice
Burghardt of Austin and Mrs. Glenith Parker of Palacios; two
brothers, Kay Legg of Bay City and Cecil Legg of Markham, 15
grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Lela Bernice Legg, 87, of Palacios, were held Nov. 29 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jesse T. Jones and Rev. Jesse A. Legg officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.
Mrs. Legg died Nov. 27, 1985 at Wagner General Hospital. She was born March 28, 1898 in Sherican, to the late Joseph and Martha Evans. She married Early Roy Legg on Jan. 15, 1916. He preceded her in death on May 28, 1970.
She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include sons, Ray William of Granite Shoals, Texas, Rev. Jesse Atkerson of Houston; two daughters, Alice Legg Burghardt of Austin and Glenith Legg Parker of Palacios with whom she had lived with for the past seven years; 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons David R. Legg, Dan V. Legg, Jr., Billy Wayne Parker, Johnie A. Parker, Vernon Legg and Donald B. Barbee.
In lieu of usual remembrances memorials may be made to the United Pentecostal Church as she was the one to help get it started in Palacios or the charity of the donor’s choice.
In addition to her parents, husband and sons, she was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services for Ray W. Legg, 80, of Victoria, were held Feb. 25, 2000 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Shamburger officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.
Mr. Legg was born Dec. 5, 1919 in Palacios to the late Early Roy and Lela Bernice Evans Legg. He died Feb. 22, 2000 at Retama Manor South in Victoria.
He has been a resident of Victoria for the past five years. He was a former long time resident of Angleton. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Victoria, a life member of the Alvin Masonic Lodge #762 AF and AM., a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers Lodge #128. A veteran of WWII serving in the US Army Air Force. Mr. Legg was a retired Mechanical Engineer with Dow Chemical Company.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Dorsey Legg of Victoria; two daughters and sons-in-law; Cathy and Calvin McCormick of Victoria and Donna and Dan Beto of Bryan; two sisters and a brother-in-law; Glenith Parker of Palacios and Alice and Harry Burghardt of Austin; brother and sister-in-law; Rev. Jesse and Billie Jean Legg of Houston and Mary Ann Legg of Rockdale; one grandson, Joseph McCormick of Victoria and one great-grandson, Andrew Campbell of Houston.
Mr. Legg was preceded in death by two brothers, Dan and Early James Legg.

Early James Legg, age 19 years 8 months and16 days, died Sept. 30th at the hospital after an illness of a few days. He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. K. Legg, three brothers, Ray, Dan and Jessie and two sisters, Alice and Gleneth Legg of Palacios, Texas.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 4 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Odis Rainer of the Bay City [First] Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Mr. Legg was born July 17, 1914, to Roger Kay Legg and Viola B. Merck Legg in Collegeport and died March 16, 1991, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston.
A resident of Bay City until 1964, he was a member of the First Christian Church in Bay City.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Ray Legg of Houston; three daughters, Kay Francis Cheek of Victoria, Valerie Ryman of Bay City and Jo Ann Crow of Bay City; two sons, Roger Legg of Houston and Alley Ray Crow of Bay City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Patrick Mahurin, Duane Ryman, Bryan Fonville, Dale Fonville, Keith Kilgore, Greg Schulze, Michael Saizan and Jarred Saizan.

Mrs. Legg was born March 23, 1898, in Sheridan, Texas, and died 11:45 a. m. Nov. 27, 1985, at Wagner General Hospital, Palacios.
A resident of Palacios for seven years, she was a charter member of United Pentecostal Church of Palacios.
Survivors include two daughters, Annie L. Burghardt of Houston and Glenith L. Parker of Palacios: two sons, Ray William Legg of Marble Falls and Jesse A. Legg of Houston; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Early Ray Legg in 1970; five sisters and two brothers.
Family requests that memorials be made to the United Pentecostal Church of Palacios.

Funeral services were held Sunday for Mrs. Lettie Stella Legg, 44, with the Rev. Tom Plumbley, pastor of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial was in Hawley Cemetery. Mrs. Legg passed away May 16 at 5:00 a.m.
She is survived by her husband Henry Legg; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Eastman of Cedar Lane; a daughter, Kay Frances? Legg; a son, Roger Legg; daughters, Mrs. Elex Lyle of Bay City, Mrs. A. B. Brown Jr. of Houston and Mrs. Sidney Harmond of Houston; and one brother ____vn Eastman of Cedar Lane.
Pallbearers were Earnest _____, P. A. McClendon, Dale Withrow, H. H. Ray, Paul Jones, Otis Birkner, Otha Birkner, and Henry Carrington.

Funeral services for Roger Kay Legg, 99, of Houston will be held at 3 p. m. Tuesday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dave Hylan officiating. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery, Blessing.
Mr. Legg was born July 12, 1886, in Cedar Creek, Texas, and died 5:30 p. m. Feb. 2, 1986, in West Houston Medical Center.
A resident of Bay City for over 30 years, he was retired from Texas Gulf Sulphur after 25 years of service. He was a member of First Christian Church.
Survivors include a brother, Cecil Legg of Markham, a grandson, H. Roger Legg Jr. of Houston; a granddaughter, Kay Legg Mahurin of Houston; and a great-grandson, Patrick W. Mahurin of Houston.
Pallbearers include Dean Merck Jr., John M. Merck Jr., Deu Pree Snell, Michael A. Mahurin, Stephen A. Mahurin and Albert Hoffman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Viola Merck Legg, and a son, Henry Roger Legg Sr. of Houston.

Mrs. Legg was born April 21, 1895, and died March 3, 1985, in Houston where she resided for three years.

He is survived by: four sisters, Neva Kelch of Amarillo, Texas,
Norma McDonald and husband Eugene, Margie Quinn and husband Rex and
Billie Joy Suffling all of Bay City. He is also survived by many
nieces and nephews and his special friends and caregivers at the
Mexia State School.
