Funeral Services Held Sunday For Former Recorder, C. W. Milam

Funeral services for Charles Walter Milam were held at the First Methodist Church, Sunday, November 18 at 2:30 p. m. with the Rev. John Fluth conducting the last rites. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Charles Milam was born April 23, 1876 in Lexington, Tenn. He came to Texas with his family and settled at Deport in Lamar County, where he purchased a gin. His wife Dolly passed away when their son, Wylie was an infant.

He married Josie McConnell in 1906 in Deport. The family moved to South Texas in 1918 and settled at Ashby and in 1924 they left the farm and moved to Palacios. Mrs. Josie Milam preceded him in death in 1941. On December 19, 1945 he married Mrs. Minnie Hershberger.

He died suddenly Friday afternoon, November 16.

Mr. Milam was a life long member of the Methodist Church. He served the city as recorder from 1952-54. He was active in the community and in political affairs until his death.

Mrs. Josie Milam

Mrs. Josie Milam, who died at her home in Palacios, April 3, 1941, was born in Deport, Texas, May 8, 1887. She was united in marriage to C. W. Milam, May 13, 1906, and was a faithful and loving companion and devoted mother, thinking always of those she loved. By her kind and thoughtful nature her friends are numbered by all who knew her.

Mrs. Milam professed Christ as her Saviour in early life, uniting with the Methodist Church. It was a great pleasure to her to attend Church services and help wherever she could.

She leaves to mourn her untimely passing her husband, C. W. Milam, four children, Mrs. J. W. Abendroth, of New Orleans, Walter Milam and Wylie Milam, Palacios, and Ruby Milam of Austin, six grandchildren, two brothers, Charlie and Henry McConnell, Palacios, and three sisters, Mrs. A. O. Gillis, Bogota, Texas, Mrs. Mary Linkenhoker, Troup, Texas, and B. F. Ammons, Caddo, Okla.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 4, at 3 p. m. from the Methodist Church. Rev. J. E. Mack, officiating. Interment was made in the Palacios Cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Out of town relatives and friends to attend the funeral of Mrs. C. W. Milam were Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Abendroth and sons of New Orleans, La.; Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Ammons, Caddo, Okla.; Mrs. Lee Nelson and son Charles, Mr. and Mrs. George Anderson and daughter, Wilma of Galveston, and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Crewes of Tivoli, Texas.

Funeral Services For Mrs. Minnie Milam Held Tuesday A. M.

Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Milam were held at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning, August 2, at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Lyons, pastor of the Trinity Baptist Church, officiating. The remains were shipped to Braymar, Missouri, for interment.

Mrs. Milam, a resident of Palacios for many years, was born June 19, 1886 in Braymar, Mo. and passed away at the Bayview Hospital Monday morning, August 1, after an illness of several weeks.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Louise Beardon of Kansas City, Mo.

Milam’s Death Saddens City – Walter Jackson Milam

Palacios citizens were shocked last week when they learned of the sudden death of Walter Jackson Milam, who suffered a heart attack at his home Wednesday evening and was dead on arrival at Wagner General Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 Friday afternoon, February 9, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl L. W. Israel, Rev. Leon Maxwell and Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment followed in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of the late Charles and Dolly Rhodes Milam, he was born August 23, 1902 in Deport, Texas. The family moved to Palacios, in 1918 where he lived the rest of his life. On June 4, 1928, he married Jo Callaway and to this union two daughters were born.

A retired salesman, he and his wife managed the Luther Hotel for many years and for the past few years he had worked at Hamlin’s Minimax.

He was a director of the Palacios Cemetery Association, a former member of the city council, board of trustees of the Palacios Independent School District and chairman of the Board of Stewards of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Milam of Palacios; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Betty) Foulds of Austin, Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Dolly) Hamlin of Palacios; one sister, Ruby Milam of Teague; one brother, Wylie Milam of Palacios and six grandchildren.

Josephine Milam

Josephine Milam, affectionately known as Nana, was born December 7, 1905 in Houston. She died April 17, 1985 at age 79. Funeral services were held April 20 at 10 a. m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Boykin and Rev. Jay Gross officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Walter, in February 1979.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Bettye and Bill Foulds of Austin and Dolly and Billy Hamlin of Palacios; six grandsons and granddaughters, Kathy, Debby, Walter, Bill, Martha and Lisa and six great grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Luther of Palacios, Mrs. Marion Perkins of San Marino, California; one brother, Rev. James A. Callaway of New Gulf; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Jo visited Palacios as a child and moved here during her teens. She and Walter were married in 1928 and lived the remainder of their lives in Palacios. The bay held a special fascination for her, and was a constant source of inspiration.

Jo was a lifelong Methodist and early member of the First Methodist Church of Palacios. She was instrumental in preparing the history of this church for its 75th anniversary celebration. She held many offices in the church and women’s society, but more importantly, she was a true and faithful member and a Christian in every sense of the word.

She was a charter member of Athena Club, member of Matagorda County Federated Women’s Club and Chamber of Commerce. She was involved in community affairs and always concerned about making Palacios a better place to live. Her interests were many, and she had a thirst for knowledge.

She was mother, sister, Nana, friend—a very special person that will be missed by all.

Wylie R. Milam

Funeral services for Wylie R. Milam, 83, were held March 9 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Blanton officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Milam was born Dec. 16, 1904 in Deport, TX, the son of Charles W. and Mary Ellen Rhodes Milam. He died March 7, 1988 at Wagner General Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Milam of Palacios; daughters, Marilyn Brister of Palacios and Cheryl Brown of Victoria; son, James Milam of Palacios; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Day, John Toellner, Richard Gamertsfelder, Robert Montgomery, Leonard Lamar, and Abel Pierce.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palacios Volunteer Fire Department or the First Presbyterian Church.

Beatrice Milam

Funeral services for Beatrice Milam, 81, of Palacios will be held 2 p. m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Palacios, with the Rev. Doug Blanton officiating. Burial to follow at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Milam was born Sept. 16, 1908, in Victoria to Louis James and Rosie Bauer Chaddock and died 8 p. m. Feb. 13, 1990 at Wagner General Hospital, Palacios.

A resident of Palacios for 60 years, she was a member of the Palacios VFW Auxiliary, Athena Club, Order of Eastern Star and First Presbyterian Church of Palacios where she was involved with the Women of the Church Circle.

Survivors include a son, James Milam of Palacios; two daughters, Marilyn Brister of Palacios and Cheryl Brown of Victoria; a sister, Marvelle Crozier of Pensacola, Fla.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Billy Hamlin, Bruce Herlin, Billy Morton, Aaron Brister, Vernon Bates and Richard Gamertsfelder.

Honorary pallbearers include Earl Icenogle, Ashley Thigpen, Sherman Green and Alvin Koenig.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Palacios.
