FUNERAL RITES FOR H. W. SAVAGE HELD SUNDAY

First Palacios Man to Die In Service Since Start of War

Funeral services for Houston Wilson Savage, 20, first man from Palacios to lose his life in the service of his country were held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. from the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. C. F. Connor officiating.

Savage, a Flying Cadet stationed at Curtis Field, near Brady, Texas, was killed in an airplane crash January 17, 1942.

Born at Olivia, Texas, December 1, 1921, he received his elementary and junior high school education in Olivia and was graduated from the Palacios High School in the spring of 1939. In the fall of 1940 he attended Allen Academy but left in mid-term to work with his brother in the oil fields.

Military service for Houston was of short duration. He reported to Randolph Field at San Antonio on July 28, 1941, and was immediately transferred to Brayton Flying Service at Cuero where he got his preliminary flying in the single-motored bi-plane. From there he was transferred to Curtis Field at Brady, Texas, on December 12, 1940 to receive advanced training.

At 7:45 A. M. January 17, 1941, Houston met his death in an airplane crash at an auxiliary flying field near Brady. The crash occurred as Houston was attempting to avert a collision with one of his buddies and lost control of the plane. He was too near the ground to straighten his ship and as a result met his death at the early age of 20.

Houston was well and favorably known by the entire Gulf Coast section. He made many friends by his good sportsmanship in all phases of athletics. He was especially known as an outstanding amateur boxer, having won tournaments in Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio, Brenham, Port Lavaca, and Palacios.

He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Savage, six sisters, Mrs. Emmitt Haskins and Mrs. Perry Raskins, both of Olivia, Mrs. R. K. Nelms, Victoria, Mrs. Maudine Haynes, Palacios, Miss Jewell Savage, Alice, Miss Naomi Savage, San Angelo, and one brother J. Y. Savage, of Brundage, Texas.

Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Funeral Services To Be Held Thursday For Mrs. Cora M. Savage

Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Maude Savage will be held at the Church of Christ in Olivia, Texas, Thursday, January 15, at 2 p. m. Brother Glenn Lee, assisted by Brother Ted Scaddin will officiate. Burial will be in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Savage, who was born October 14, 1880, passed away at the Bay View Hospital Tuesday, January 13.

She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Isabel Haskins, Texas City; Mrs. Lela Haskins, Olivia; Mrs. Hayden Nelms, Medina; Mrs. Maudine Gray, Brazoria; Mrs. Jewell Kidwell, Mineral Wells and Mrs. Naomi Jensen, Palacios; one son, J. Y. Savage, Crystal City; one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Minton, Middlewater, Texas, 20 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
