Corporal Woods was a member of the 55th Ordinance Ammunition Company, U.S. Army. He was accidentally shot by a fellow soldier clearing his weapon. He was evacuated to the hospital ship USS HAVEN (AH-12) where he died on February 9, 1951. Corporal Woods was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Local Boy Killed In Korea
 

Cpl. George C. Woods, Jr., 22-year-old Negro of Bay City who formerly was a delivery boy for the Tribune, was killed in action in Korea according to a telegram received by his mother yesterday.
 

Circumstances pertaining to Cpl. Woods' death are not known at this time but the telegram stated that he died of bullet wounds in the neck.
 

He has been in Korea since July, 1950.

He is survived by his mother, Pearl Woods of 2911-A LeTulle Street, Bay City.

She received the heart-breaking telegram yesterday afternoon at about 3:00 o'clock.

Contents of the telegram follow:

"Secretary of the Army has asked me to express his deep regret that your son, Cpl. George C. Woods, Jr., died in Korea on Feb. 9, 1951, as result of gunshot wounds of the neck.

"Circumstances unknown. a complete investigation is being made and you will be informed and notified by letter."

"Edward F. Mitchell, Major General, USA, the Adjutant General of the Army."

Cpl. Woods, according to relatives, was last heard from on December 23, 1950.

He once delivered papers for the Tribune and enlisted in the army in 1946.

Body of Bay City Soldier Being Returned For Burial

Corporal George E. [C] Wood[s], Jr., 22-year-old Bay City Negro who was a former delivery boy for the Tribune, will be buried here in Bay City.

Woods died in Korea on February 9 after being wounded on February 7.

Mrs. Pearl Woods, his mother, received a telegram today from the War Department asking for a location for burial.

Mrs. Woods said that he will be buried in Bay City.

The body is now enroute from Korea, but has not yet arrived in the United States.

He was a veteran of four years overseas.

Prior to his entrance into the Army he was an employee of the Tribune.

WOODS

Mrs. Pearl Woods, 79, of 701 Matthews Street in Bay City, died Thursday at St. Joseph Hospital, Houston.  She was born May 28, 1899, in Wharton County, Texas.  She was a Baptist, and a member of the Eastern Star, Golden Circle and Heroines of Jericho.  Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Inez Jackson, of Houston, a son, Mr. Earl Woods, of Huntsville, granddaughter Sheryl Woods, of Bay City, and a sister, Mrs. Laura Matthews, of Bay City.  Services will be held at Enterprise Baptist Church, in Bay City, Monday October 2, at 2:00 P.M.  Officiating Clergy will be Rev. F. W. McIlveen, Pastor of the Fifth Ward Baptist Church, in Houston.

Interment will be at East View Cemetery, in Bay City.  Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
