Mr. Z. M. Bryant died at his home near Blessing, Wednesday, June 15, 1932. He was born March 12, 1855, at Clinch Port, Va. He had been a resident of Texas since 1912, and made his home on a farm just west of Palacios a number of years prior to his moving to Blessing. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock and interment made in the cemetery west of Blessing [LaBauve Cemetery, Francitas, Jackson County, Texas].

Goldie Lucille Burt passed from this earthly life on May 24, 1997 at her home in Bay City to join the angels in heaven and to meet our almighty and merciful God. Burt was born on Feb. 11, 1939 in Francitas to Robert Ruben and Nettie May Carvell Joines. She married Charles Gordon Burt on July 16, 1955 and raised their family of two starting in Francitas and later in Bay City. Burt leaves behind her devoted husband Charles Gordon Burt; a son Don Gordon Burt of Sweeny; a daughter Robbie Denise Wakefield of Anahuac; grandson Dustin Paul Wakefield of Anahuac; granddaughter Deborah Christine Wakefield of DeQueen, Arkansas; two great granddaughters Krista Colleen and Shanna Christene Wells and two sisters Margaret Aileen Richardson of Bay City and Lillie Lorine Schmersahl of Sweeny. She was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors, especially the hill country of southwest Texas. Burt was a member of our Lord’s Church, The Sixth Street Church of Christ. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Tuesday, May 27 at the Sixth Street Church of Christ in Bay City with Brother Joe Wrape officiating. She will be laid to rest in LaBauve Cemetery in Francitas. Pallbearers are Gary Joines, Paul Hunt, Don Schmersahl, Glen Joines, Audie Northcutt and Mike McKissick. Honorary pallbearers are Earl Armstrong and David Rowell. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

Graveside service for Alfred Lokey Byara, 75, of Francitas, were held at 10 a. m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1992 in Francitas. Burial followed in Francitas Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Bros. Funeral Home of Bay City. Mr. Byars died Sunday, Nov. 15 at his home. He was born Dec. 6, 1926 in Yoakum, Texas to the late Carl B. and Georgie Castillo Byars. He was a Catholic and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Blessing. Survivors include his wife, Laverne of Francitas; step-daughters, Peggy Sue Barker of New Caney, Karen Lynn Walleck of Francitas and Sherry Jones of Houston; step-sons, Willard Charles James of Napa, Calif. and Chuck Jennings of San Augustine; a sister, Margie Coline of El Campo; brothers, Carl of Austin and Otto of Francitas; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held January 4, 1989 for Erma Lee Campbell who passed away at Leisure Lodge Nursing Home. Rev. Eddie Cude officiated at the ceremony held at the Palacios Funeral Chapel and at the interment at Francitas Cemetery. Erma Lee Campbell was born July 6, 1912 at Bandera, Texas and died January 1, 1989. She is survived by her daughters Wanda Hardin and Linda Ellis, both of Palacios, Lottie Knipp of San Antonio, and Elizabeth Taylor of Sanford, Florida. She is also survived by a sister, Lois Anderson of Pledger, Texas, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Dr. and Mrs. T. H. Hood went to Francitas today, Wednesday, to attend the funeral of Jesse E. Campbell, who died of a heart attack Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Mr. Campbell was one of Francitas’ greatest boosters and for many years his column, “Francitas Facts and Fancies,” was published in the Francitas Bee, and read by hundreds of admirers in nearly every state in the Union. The Beacon carried contributions from him quite often during the past ten years. His passing on brings sadness to the hearts of many, while the Beacon family feels as though one of our own number had answered the summons “To come over there.”

Mattie E. Campbell, relect of the late Jesse E. Campbell, of Francitas, died at her home in that place Saturday night, following an illness of some duration. She was 81 years of age, December 5, 1941, and had resided at Francitas since 1914, coming there from Denver, Colorado. Mrs. Campbell was of a quiet unassuming manner, loved her home and all its surroundings. Her kindness and thoughtfulness of neighbor and friend exemplified her true Christian character and the trust and faith she had in her Heavenly Father. Her passing brings a feeling of loneliness to all who knew her, yet we know she is at rest and with those she loved who had preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. Kelly, pastor of the Francitas Methodist Church, and the remains placed in the bosom of Mother Earth, beneath the beautiful live oak trees she so admired in the cemetery south of Francitas where her companion of many years was buried ten years ago last December. The large crowd to attend the last rites and the many beautiful floral offerings attested to the love and esteem held for “Aunt Mattie” by the entire community. Dr. and Mrs. T. H. Hood and Capt. and Mrs. Herman Hood, of this city attended the services.

Funeral services for Yancey Campbell were held at 2:30 p. m. Sunday, October 17, in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in the Francitas Cemetery. Son of the late Jack and Mollie Cain Campbell, he was born December 14, 1906, in Oakhurst, Texas. A retired farmer and a resident of Palacios for 22 years, he died Friday, October 15 in Wagner General Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Erma Lee Campbell of Palacios; four daughters, Ms. Lottie Campbell and Mrs. Gilbert Ellis of Palacios, Mrs. Homer Hardin of Wharton and Mrs. Leo Hardin of Port Lavaca; three sisters, Mrs. Anton Schild of Ganado, Mrs. W. T. Hicks of Lake Livingston and Mrs. Foster Burkett of Crockett; one brother, John D. Kay of Palacios and 12 grandchildren.

Francitas—William Ray Capak, 45, of Francitas, died Saturday, November 29, 1997. He was born Feb. 16, 1952, in Palacios to Ruby Rose Capak of Francitas and the late Louis Capak. He was a ranchhand and a Baptist. Survivors: daughters, Cassandra Capak and Kendra Capak; son, William R. Capak Jr. of Francitas; mother; brother, Hugh Capak of Edna; and one grandchild. Graveside services will be at 2 p. m. Tuesday at LaBauve Cemetery in Francitas, Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 782-2152.

Tragedy struck again at about midnight last Saturday when a pickup in which the family of Nicholas Carrillo were returning from Palacios was overturned, killing the baby girl, Stella, and seriously injuring the small brother, Santos. The father, Nicholas was badly injured. The others received minor injuries. The baby will be laid away here in the Francitas Cemetery.

A bright angel came for a few hours to bless the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Dorris in the person of a 9 1/2 pound baby boy on Feb. 2 then passed to a brighter realm on Feb. 3. Interment was in Francitas Cemetery. The mother, tho very ill for a few days, is on the road to recovery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended the family in this hour of sorrow. Funeral services for Mrs. Sadie V. Evans were held at the Palacios Funeral Home at 2 p. m. Monday March 5, with Rev. V. E. Moore pastor of the Pentecostal Church in Port Lavaca, officiating. Interment was in the Francitas Cemetery. A resident of the Turtle Bay Community, Mrs. Evans was born December 3, 1872 in Bonnard, Mo. She died Wednesday night, February 28, at her home. She is survived by her husband, C. A. Evans, and two sons, Claude Bryant of Lincoln, Nebr. and A. O. Cassady of Indianapolis, Ind.

The Last Post sounded for Uncle Bob Fleury on Sunday morning, March 25th at 8 a. m. We who had known him well for 8 years, and some of us for many more, were glad that he passed out without any suffering. He was able to be around as usual on Saturday, and was called away the next morning. Uncle Bob--as he was known to everyone--was born in Washington County in 1843, the son of Major Fleury, who fought at the battle of San Jacinto in 1836. The Fleury family settled in Jackson county, near the town of Roxana, about the year 1860. At the time the Fleury family settled in Jackson County there were two tribes of Indians in the adjacent territory--the Carancahua and Cado tribes. The old town of Roxana, beautiful for location, at the confluence of the Lavaca and Navidad rivers, is now no more. When the Missouri Pacific passed through that country, the inhabitants of Roxana refused a right-of-way unless at a prohibitive price. The Missouri Pacific passed them by, and the town is now in ruins, only chimneys and underground cisterns to be seen--and these a sad reflection on the non-progressiveness of the citizens. Major Fleury was a well-known cattleman and farmer in the early days, owning many darkies. He was succeeded by his son, Uncle Bob, whose demise we are recording, and to whom we are paying a last tribute of respect. Uncle Bob married Miss Adonia LaBauve about the end of the Civil War. We laid him to rest in the little LaBauve cemetery, one mile on this side of Francitas, fenced off many years ago by the LaBauve family as a place to bury their own beloved dead, and as a God's acre for their neighbors, too. At that time there were no roads hereabouts--only a cattle range. The LaBauve family came to Jackson County from Louisiana about the year 1859. Uncle Bob was a Presbyterian. But it matters not what he was called, so long as he was a believer. There is neither Presbyterian, nor Methodist, nor Baptist, nor Roman Catholic in heaven, where all are one in Christ Jesus. The funeral service was held by Rev. G. F. Gillespie, Pastor of the Palacios Presbyterian Church, who delivered a short address both at the home of Mr. Grover Lawson where he lived, and at the graveside--basing his remarks on Psalm 23, Vs. 1: "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want." Uncle Bob did not lack a protecting providence, patriotism, courage, common sense, generosity. He joined the Confederate Army at the age of 17, and during the great part of the Civil War fought for the South Land that he love so well. He was captured at the Battle of Vicksburg, returning home when an exchange of prisoners was made. For some years he had roomed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Lawson, who treated him with great kindness, and who have earned the Master's blessing: "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto Me." His own children would have been glad to have him live with them, but he preferred to live in Palacios. The State of Texas had given him a small pension for some years, pitiably small, but perhaps sufficient for his needs. We who met him often on the croquet ground, or occasionally played forty-two with him, wondered at the strength of mind and memory he possessed for a man of his years--and let it be confessed that we were sometimes taken aback by his language, which we all overlooked because he had fought for his country, and because, too, he was an old cattleman. Mr. Grover Lawson informs us that he was naturally generous in all his dealings. Three sons, Ed, Jim and Ernest, were present at the funeral, and two daughters, Mrs. O'Brien and Mrs. O'Brien?, with other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Lawson were present together with a few neighbors and friends, at the funeral service at the home. We looked around for some of the old cronies with whom he had played forty-two so often, but alas! some of them were missing--perhaps they had not heard. The pallbearers were Messrs. John Bolling, Ron Huddleston, E. Mosier, Guy Stulting, Grady Walker, Walter Williams. We laid him to rest in the land of the setting sun, among the live oaks, and the tangled underbrush and the wild flowers.
"And not by eastern windows only, I have said we laid him to rest in the land of the setting sun, but best of all we laid him to rest in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection from the dead, where "they shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more: neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes." On a modest headstone in the little LaBauve Cemetery, marking the resting place of a woman, we found these two inscriptions--at the top the picture of an angel:--
"Farewell, dear--, angels guard thy tomb." May angels guard Uncle Bob's last resting place, and may his spirit hear the mocking bird sing in the live oaks. G. F. Gillespie, his remains were taken to the family burying lot on the other side of the Carancahua river near Francitas and interred beside those of his wife, who had preceded him to the Great Beyond some years ago. Six children survive him, two daughters and four sons.

Born June 4, 1928, in Francitas to the late W. W. and Jesse Green Griffith, he served in the Korean War and was an active member of V. F. W. Lodge 4403. He was also a retired tapper in the pot room for Alcoa and was a member of Point Comfort United Methodist Church. He died Oct. 11, 1994. He is survived by his wife, Jane Batchelder Griffith; sisters, Annie Mae Long and Sue Jalufka, both of Francitas, Ethel Tanner of Port Lavaca, Faylene Sparks of Matagorda and Melvina Nelson of Cape Carancahua; brothers, K. O. Griffith and J. W. Griffith, both of Francitas, Raymond Griffith of Blessing, Sterling Griffith of Port Lavaca and Irvin Griffith of Victoria. Mr. Griffith was born Sept. 20, 1929 in Francitas, TX to the late Walton William Griffith and Jessie Faye Green Griffith. He passed away Feb. 2, 2010 in Victoria, TX. He was a life long resident of Matagorda County and was a retired farmer, rancher, and oil field worker. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Durrell and Deean Griffith of Markham, Lewis Ray and Linda Griffith of Midfield, and Willie Lee and Robin Griffith of Blessing; sisters Medina Nelson of Cape Carancahua, Faye Haskell of Matagorda, and Susie Jalufka of Francitas; brothers K. O. Griffith of Francitas, Irvin Griffith of Victoria, and Sterling Griffith of Port Lavaca; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Alvena Gill; sisters Annie Mae Long and Ethel Tanner; brothers J. W. Griffith, Mack Griffith, and Vernon Griffith; and a grandson, Bryan Griffith. Wm. Wesley Sanders was born in Grimes County, Texas, July 5, 1873, where he spent his boyhood. He was married to Mrs. Della Foster at Lufkin, Texas on December 20, 1910. They lived there two years then went to Louisiana for a while. They moved to Jackson County in May 1917. They have lived here in this community ever since. Mr. Sanders became a member of a Baptist Church in 1908, at Fairview near Lufkin, Texas. He is survived by his wife and daughter here and a sister in Lufkin. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. George D. McClelland, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Palacios, interment in the Francitas cemetery.

Mrs. Updike was born Dec. 5, 1917 in Richmond, Virginia and died June 4, 1989 at her home. Survivors include a daughter, M. Dean Sterrett of Francitas; grandchildren, Kenneth and Rosie Sanders, Keith and Lanny Riddle, Fred Upthagrove and family and Brett Upthagrove.
