Mrs. Pearl Coston Barbour

The recording angel has filled out and sealed the page, in the Book of Heaven, on which was written some 55 years ago, Pearl Coston, born and on which he several years later added another word, married, to W. D. Barbour, and of, which he made the last entry Tuesday afternoon, July 29, 1930, when he wrote, died.

What were the notations made in this book in the years between the first and last entries, no one knows but they who were the friends of this good woman many, many times made mental notes of the days of sacrifice and service in which her life was about.

Being the first child in the Coston home, this little daughter was the life, hope and joy of the very young mother, who herself, was only sixteen years old when little “Pearl” came to her. As the mother expresses it, they grew up together, and were chums, rather than mother and daughter. The years of her girlhood, indeed up to the date of her marriage, Pearl Coston traveled round, here and there according to the spirit of adventure of her father, but when she was married, they made themselves, she and Mr. Barbour, a home in Matagorda County, and here is that her friends live, and appreciate the memory of one who lived to serve. Since the death of her father, in 1922, Mrs. Barbour has been the constant companion of her invalid mother, from dawn ‘till the night time.

Who can forecast the acts recorded on her page up “yonder?” The little daughter to whom she became a devoted mother, who can tell what large part this adopted mother had on the forming of the beautiful character of this child, as she grew, to become the noble Christian that she is? Who can even guess at the lines added in the “Book,” since “married, and dead.” ‘Twas those little acts of kindness and sacrifice that she made which smoothed out the hard times, and made joyous the pathway of life where the sun did not always shine.

“Sister” meant the world to the brothers in her home. Perhaps when the wearied mother gave the little “brood” the bread and butter, it was “sister” who was the sugar of it. The days Mrs. Barber was permitted to spend aside from her immediate family were days filled with service to her church, and filled her with an abiding love. Next to her church, came the other one activity of her life, “The United Daughters of the Confederacy.” Her father was a member of the third company, Hood’s Brigade, and the stories of the hardships and romances of that terrible time, 1861-1865, were ever thrilling to her young heart, which made her want to be a part of the order which is trying to preserve for the future, the glory of the past. The last work of hers in the U. D. C. was her …just so recently erected in Matagorda to the memory of the Confederate soldiers who froze to death the night of Dec. 21, 1863. The circle of her friends, will be long in forgetting the merry ___ and hearty goodwill of this, their friend.

They who knew her best loved her most, for hers was the quiet reserved sort of disposition, and her character shone out brightest on those whom she came in daily association. But her page in the “Book” is sealed, and sealed with “well done.”

Mrs. Barbour was buried from the Episcopal Church, her church home, and the tears which fell on the quiet cold face and form of her, were tears of love and appreciation of her life, as well as tears of sympathy and sorrow.

As members of the E. S. Rugeley Chapter U. D. C., we express our joy of working with our sister in her lifetime, and mingle our grief at her going with those whom she loved best, her mother, husband, brothers and her daughter. When we next meet, and the roll is called, our secretary will write opposite “Mrs. Pearl Coston Barbour, transferred,” and think of her work among us as “finished.” And we have the page of her life, ‘born, married, died,” with the chorus of kindly deeds to others filling in the open spaces.—Cora B. Moore, Historian, U. D. C.

While in Alaska she had a beautiful wolf mix, Jadie; and is survived now by her precious Yorkie, Princess,  (a nod goes out to Margit for rescuing Princess from the Texas heat). Peggy’s love for dogs was boundless and her pets brought her great joy.

She moved to Alaska in the 1980’s and promptly went to work at Prudhoe Bay where she stayed for 20 some odd years. She is well remembered as the admin who sealed all documents with a kiss, (a bright red kiss was her way of signing off). During her time on the “slope” she was very active in volunteer work with the United Way, always trying to paint a better future. She returned to her native Texas and went back to work in banking.  She enjoyed volunteering at a food pantry as her health permitted.
