Funeral services were held Friday morning at the First Methodist Church in Bay City for Mrs. W. E. Davant, wife of W. E. Davant, prominent Attorney. Mrs. Davant died Thursday at her home here. The Rev. Marvin Vance officiated and burial was in the Cedarvale Cemetery. In addition to her husband, Mrs.. Davant is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann and Katherine; one son, J. E. "Ted" Davant III; two grandchildren, James Edward and Laura Carolyn Davant, all of Bay City; two brothers, J. A. Brigham of Pearland and H. E. Brigham of Houston. Mrs. Davant was past matron of the Eastern Star Lodge, past president of the Chautauqua Club and of the P. R. A., and was active in civic affairs for a number of years. W. E. Davant, Noted Lawyer Here Dies Monday Following
Illness Mr. William Edwards Davant, 56 years, three months and 26 days, died at his home here in Bay City Monday evening following an illness of many months. A resident of Bay City since 1909, Mr. Davant was one of the best known lawyers in this section of the state. He had practiced here for years and his last big case was an income tax case tried before the Supreme Court of the United States which he won. He was a native of Butler, Georgia and from there he came to Texas and had lived here in Bay City for thirty-six years. Here he represented some of the larger estates and individuals with large holdings. He was considered among the best lawyers in this section and his remarkable memory allowed him to give what is termed “sidewalk: judgment. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his father, James Edwin Davant of Corsicana, two daughters, Mrs. T. E. Dunnam, Jr., and Miss Kathryn Davant, both of Bay City; one son, J. E. of Blessing; also one sister, Miss Hortense Davant of Corsicana; three brothers, Phil E., of Houston, J. E., Jr., of Corsicana and R. M. of Jackson, Mississippi. The Life and Legacy of The Honorable Judge John Paul Davis. He was born and raised in Bay City, TX, where he graduated in 1958 from Hilliard High School with honors. In 1963, he received a B.A. Degree in History from Prairie View A & M University. Davis, a Vietnam War Veteran, served 2 years in the U.S. Army. He received a Doctorate of Jurisprudence Law Degree December 7, 1972, from the University of Houston Law School. Davis’ law career began in 1973, as the first African American Assistant Criminal District Attorney for Jefferson County, and in 1976, he entered private practice. In 1978, he became the first African American to seek a county-wide judgeship through the election process. He was the first African American appointed as Judge and Chief Magistrate of the Beaumont Municipal Court on July 7, 1980. On December 22, 1989, he was appointed as Judge of the Jefferson County Court at Law #3, the second African American in Jefferson County’s history to hold a countywide elected office, where he served for the past 20 years. Judge Davis served as president emeritus of the Hilliard High School Alumni Association, inducted in the Hilliard High School Hall of Fame, and named Distinguished Alumni of BCISD. Judge Davis received numerous awards and distinguished honors. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP, recently named the Martin Luther King Support Group, Inc. Man of the Year for 2014. He was past president and member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and named Chapter Omega Man of the Year and Omega Citizen of the Year Deacon Davis was an active and devoted member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Most recently Judge Davis authored “Who Will Remember Us?”, a historical and personal narrative that chronicles the development of Negro education in Bay City, Texas, during the segregation era from 1894 to 1967. He is preceded in death by parents, Lemon and Opal Davis; and brother, James “Sonny” Lockett. Those who will miss his loving nature and words of wisdom include his wife, Sharon Diane Dozier-Davis; siblings, Joe Ann Davis of Bay City, TX and Alphonse Revis, Sr. of Houston, TX; children, Ruth Davis Young (Eric) of Palacios, TX, Paul Kevin Davis of Fort Worth, TX, John Kelvin Davis (Marcia) of Houston, TX and Kimberly Nicole Davis of Los Angeles, CA; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Jimmy Roe Davis, 33, of Bay City passed away October 3, 2013. He was born June 29, 1980 in Bay City, Texas to Jimmy and Donna Roe Davis. He was preceded in death by his father, and grandparents Roland J. Davis, “Jiggs” and Lois Basey, John H. Roe and Hilda “Tootsie” Roe. Funeral services for Orene Mae Davis, 90, of Bay City, will be held 2 p. m. Monday, Aug. 17, at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Toland officiating. interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Davis died Friday, Aug. 14 at her home. She was born Oct. 12, 1907 in Bastrop to the late Samuel and Nettie Tinnie Tidwell Baker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a Past Matron of the Eastern Star, and a former member of the Rebecca's. A life-long resident of Bay City, Davis is survived by her daughter, Winona O. Hutcherson; son, A. C. Davis, Jr., and his wife Bernice; sisters, Louise Sykes and Irene Woffard, all of Bay City. Daily Tribune, September 24, 1971 Funeral Rites Pending For Young Sammy Davis Samuel (Sammy) Davis, 10, injured severely Thursday night in a fall in Bay City and taken to Houston hospital for surgery, died Sunday about 9 p. m. at Hermann Hospital. Services are pending word from a brother overseas with the U. S. Army. Handling the funeral arrangements will be Taylor Brothers Funeral Home of Bay City. Young Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Davis, grocers, fell and struck his head on cement, while attending a Cub Scout function Thursday night. The youth was a member of Cub Scout Pack 31 and attending a pack function at the group’s meeting place at the First Methodist church at the time of the accident. He was swinging from a barbecue pit to a pipe, fell and struck his head and shoulder. Injuries consisted of a fractured skull, concussion, and a blood clot. He is survived by his parents, his brother in the Army overseas and a sister, Mrs. Leland Williams. Jane Eyre Clapp Wilson de la Moriniere beloved daughter, mom, sister, aunt, and grandmother passed away December 11, 2013. Jane was born January 5, 1917 to Olivia and Hester Clapp in El Campo, Texas. Jane was very active in the Bay City Country Club Ladies Golf Association. For many years she was involved with the Order of the Eastern Star of Lake Jackson and enjoyed her friends and fellowship at the First United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Frank Wilson and Ralph de la Moriniere, daughter, Phyllis Wilson, sons, Robert (Bobby) Wilson and David de la Moriniere, sister, Kathryn Clapp Orr, and grandson, Ralph Jules (Tray) de la Moriniere. Angelina Grace Dean, 78, of Bay City passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 in Houston. She was born December 5, 1934 in Houston to the late Pete F. & Virginia Campese Scanlin. Angelina was on bowling leagues for over 30 years. She was an avid square dancer, loved to cook for friends and family, and loved to fish. She worked for the Bay City Public Storage for 14 years. Angelina is survived by daughter: Theresa Dean of Bay City; son: Berry Dean of Bay City; half sister: Rosalie Duncan; and by numerous nieces & nephews. Her husband Lewis V. Dean preceded her in death in 1987.

Foster W. DeSoto Jr., 60, of Port Lavaca went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 27, 2013. He was born on July 23, 1952 in Bay City, Texas to Foster W. and Rose DeSoto. Jr. worked on the waterways as a Captain of tow boats for 42 years. He loved to spend time with his family when he was home from the water. Jr. was a native of Matagorda and served faithfully with the Matagorda Volunteer Fire Department and the Matagorda EMS for many years. He called First Baptist and First United Methodist of Matagorda his church homes. He is survived by: his loving wife of 19 years, Debbie of Port Lavaca; brother, Simon DeSoto of Bay City; three stepchildren, Candice Thigpen, Bobby Willhite and Joey Willhite; numerous grandchildren and nephew, Ronnie W. Proffer of Conroe. Jr. He was preceded in death by: his father, Foster W. DeSoto; mother, Rose DeSoto and sister, Carlene Griffith. Wayman Adolph Dial, 83, of Bay City passed away January 29, 2014. He was born December 31, 1931 in Beeville, TX to the late J. W. Dial and Aileen Fetters Dial. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the US Army. He also served as Chief of Police in San Marcos, Texas. Earl Otto Dibbern, 84, of Bay City passed away June 17, 2013. He was born February 13, 1929 in Houston, TX to the late John Christian Frederick Dibbern and Minnie Kuehnle Dibbern. Earl was well known for his craftsmanship and the love of building custom homes in Bay City and surrounding areas. He began his building career with his father in the early 1950's and continued the tradition with his two sons. Together, there are more than one hundred 'Dibbern-built' homes and businesses in the area. Earl's other hobbies were fishing and his garden. He spent many hours at the shop on Horn Road, whether he was working in the garden or cleaning up the boat after a day of fishing. That was his home away from home. His greatest joy came from spending time with the family, especially on Christmas Eve with all of the grandkids at home playing chicken foot dominoes. He will forever hold a special place in all of our hearts. Survivors include his wife Betty Dibbern of Bay City; daughter Terry Lynn Broadwater & husband Danny of El Maton; sons Dwayne Earl Dibbern & wife Veronica and Randy Ray Dibbern & wife Lisa all of Bay City; brother Robert Dibbern & wife Laura of Livingston; grandchildren Chad Broadwater (Barrett Glaze), Chase Dibbern & wife April, Clay Broadwater, Lauren Dibbern, Alyssa Dibbern, Haley Dibbern and Zachary Dibbern; sister-in-law: Anna May Dibbern; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois Ashworth Dismukes, 94, passed away April 8, 2013. She was born June 6, 1918 in Burke, Texas to the late J. H. Ashworth and Mamie Sikes Ashworth. She graduated from Lee High School in Baytown, Texas in 1936. Upon her graduation from Massey Business College in Houston she began work for Western Union and moved to Palacios, Texas in 1940 to work at Camp Hulen during World War II. In Palacios she met and married her husband of 48 years, Jesse V. Dismukes, who preceded her in death in 1989. In 1955 she went to work as secretary to the Superintendent at Palacios ISD and retired after 30 years. She moved to Webster, Texas 4 years ago to be near her family. Survivors include her son James Dismukes and wife Cecilia of Kemah, TX; grandchildren Shelle Schomberg and Scott Dismukes and great grandchildren Madison, Clay, Masyn, and Jack. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Mr. Dokes was born March 3, 1907 in Swayze, Ind. To Ralph W. and Martha Capron Dokes and died March 8, 1993 at Matagorda General Hospital. He was a member of Ruthven Commandery #2 Knights Templar in Houston. He was a past member of Masonic lodges in Houston and Bay City. Mr. Dokes was a resident of Sargent since 1973. Cecil D. Dornak, 87, of Bay City passed away October 22, 2013. He was born September 8, 1926 in El Campo, Texas to the late Joseph Dornak and Martha Michna Dornak. He retired from Dow Chemical after 35 years and was a former resident of Lake Jackson. Cecil was a loving husband and father who gave generously of his time and talents. He was an avid hunter and a friend to all. After retirement he volunteered many hours at the food pantry in Lake Jackson. His first wife, Olivia Dornak; and sisters, Rita Osina and Marilyn Young preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Frances Dornak of Bay City; daughter, Debbie Crass and husband Steve of Tennessee; sons, Denny Dornak of San Antonio and Alan Dornak of New York; and three grandchildren. Glenn Douglas, 53, of Bay City, Texas passed from this life to everlasting peace on Saturday, August 17,2013 at home in Bay City after a heroic struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Janet Douglas, their sons Robert and Davidson, and his father Edgar Murphy Douglas, also of Bay City. He is predeceased by his mother, Margaret Ann Douglas, as well as his paternal and maternal grandparents: Murphy and Imo Dell Douglas, and Peter Baker and Mintora Glenn. Glenn was born on March 28, 1960 in Bay City, Texas. He graduated from Bay City High School with academic and athletic honors in 1978. Growing up in Matagorda County imprinted on Glenn a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing, an interest in ranching, and a keen sense of fairness as an underpinning of community. The friendships of his youth and attachment to his family remained strong throughout his life. Glenn graduated from Texas A&M University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics. While at A&M, he joined the Theta Chi fraternity and was a member of A&M's skeet and trap shooting team that won NCAA national championships in 1981 and 1982. After college, he studied law at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1985 and admission to the Texas State Bar later that year. At A&M, Glenn met Janet Burnam, and the two were married May 3, 1986. The young couple spent their first married years in Bryan / College Station, Texas, where Glenn began work as a trial lawyer for the firm of Dillon & Lewis. In 1991, Glenn joined the Houston law firm that / eventually became Crowley Douglas & Norman. He started his own Houston practice as the Douglas Law Firm in 2007. Glenn devoted his professional life as a trial lawyer to seeking justice for people harmed by another's disregard for their wellbeing. Although he regretted the hours away from home that were needed to research and try his cases, he helped many people obtain the means to mend shattered lives and prompted numerous defendants to adopt safer workplace practices. Glenn was a member of the State Bar of Texas, Houston Bar Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association (former Director), American Association for Justice, American Bar Association (Fellow), and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Houston was where Glenn and Janet raised their family and built a life together, but Bay City was never far from mind. After their youngest son graduated from high school, Glenn and Janet moved near their ranch on the banks of the Colorado River close to Bay City, realizing a cherished dream of returning to country living. Glenn thoroughly enjoyed being a father. He helped his sons grow to become strong and principled young men. He showed his sons how hard work, persistence, pursuit of excellence and consideration for others, along with a ready smile, help mold the foundation of a successful life. At their father's side, his sons learned to hunt and fish, manage cattle and steward the land, and by so doing, embraced their family's ranching heritage. Glenn built his life on the rock of family. Glenn and Janet had a mutual devotion to each other that saw them through good times and bad. He was never happier than he was at home with her on their ranch near Bay City. He loved her more than words can say. Visitation with the family will be held at the Bay City First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, August 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas on Friday August 23, 2013 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of the usual remembrances, contributions may be made in Glenn Douglas's honor to Chapel wood United Methodist Church at 11140 Greenbay, Houston, TX 77024, or to the First United Methodist Church of Bay City at 2304 Avenue H, Bay City, TX 77414.

Peggy Lee DuCote, 61, of Van Vleck passed away January 14, 2014. She was born July 10, 1952 in Sour Lake, TX to Sherman Redd and Patsy Ruth Busley Redd. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her mother, maternal grandmother Mable Shugart and niece Kristen Jane Redd. Survivors include her father Sherman Redd & wife Glenda of Van Vleck; daughter Misty Cavallin of Van Vleck; brothers John Redd & wife Brenda of Athens, TX and Buster Redd of Van Vleck; grandchildren Calvin & ShyAnn Cavallin; 4 nieces, 1 nephew and special friends Glenda Redd, Carolyn Kile and Audrey Lovett. The family will receive friends and relatives from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM Thursday, January 16, 2014 at The First Baptist Church in Van Vleck. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm with Rev. Bob Hobbins officiating. Pallbearers will be John Redd, Buster Redd, Coy Reed, Daniel Marek, Craig Kile and Casey Kile. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Patricia Duthie, 64, of Van Vleck, passed away Thursday evening, June 20, 2013 in a Bay City hospital following a brief illness. She was born on July 17, 1948 in Evansville, Indiana, a daughter of the late Robert Louis and Laura Malinda Cox Bullard. Ms. Duthie graduated from Mt Vernon High School in Indiana and attended Vincennes University and Indiana State University in Indiana. She worked in the accounting department at the South Texas Nuclear Project for many years and TSI Technicoating in Van Vleck for the past several years. She enjoyed her family, listening to music and gardening, especially flowers. Some of her most cherished times were spent with her children and grandchildren, whom she would do anything for. Patricia had an outgoing personality with the ability to empathize with anyone. Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Diane Campbell and Randy Bullard officiating. Survivors include: her son, Shawn Duthie of Wichita Falls; daughters, Heather Maher and husband, John of Wharton, and Jennifer Goodman and husband, Jimmy of Friendswood; sisters, Diane Campbell and Gerry Campbell of Marysville, CA, Sandra Bullard of Enfield, IL, Jane Johnson and husband, Fred of Rockford, IL, Amy McDermott of Claremont, CA, Tracy Buck of Emerald Isle, NC, and Megan Bullard of Emerald Isle, NC, and sister-in-law, Barbara Merz of Columbus, OH; brothers, Robert Bullard and wife, Sally of Mt Vernon, IN, Randy Bullard of Chicago, IL, and Brock Bullard and wife, Therese of Seattle, WA and brother-in-law, Robert Duthie and wife Paula of Clearwater, FL.; six grandchildren also survive, Lauryn, Gavin, Jackson and Jillian Goodman and J.C. and Noah Maher. She also leaves many cousins and friends to cherish her memory. In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2246 W. Holcombe BLVD, Houston, Texas, 77030 or the American Breast Cancer Foundation, 1220 B East Joppa Road, Suite 332, Baltimore, Maryland, 21286. Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
