Gainor—Bay City—Mrs. Willie Gainor, wife of W. T. Gainer, died at the hospital Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock and was buried Tuesday afternoon in the Hawley cemetery. The funeral was conducted from the William Walker undertaking parlors this morning at 11 o’clock. Services were held at the grave.

PALACIOS - Lucio Garcia, age 70 passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2015. He was born on March 7, 1945 in Palacios, Texas to the late Ramon Garcia and Paula Sanchez Garcia.
He is survived by his son, Lucio Garcia Jr. of Palacios, sisters, Pauline Gomez, Janie (John) Penland of Palacios, and Lucy Garcia of Freeport, brothers, Joe (Carol) Garcia and Blas (Mary) Garcia of Palacios, and step-children, Donna (Kenny) Brune, Rosemary (Danny) Perez, Joey (MeLisa) Pena, Albert Pena, and Richard Pena.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Angelina Farrow, and brothers, Jessie Garcia and Raymond Garcia.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 4:30pm at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Palacios with a rosary to be recited at 6:30pm. Visitation will resume on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 9:15am with a funeral mass to be celebrated at 10:00am at the church. Burial to follow at Palacios Cemetery in Palacios, Texas.

Praxedes “Prexie” Garcia Sr., 91, of Bay City, TX, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on November 11, 2015. Prexie was born January 1, 1924, in Cuero, TX, to Jose Vela Garcia and Tomasa Garza. After the untimely passing of Tomasa, when Prexie was three years old, he and his two brothers, Ray and Jose Luis, were raised by their maternal grandmother and aunt. This next phase of his life was marked by the bonds of brotherhood and family, whose love and support helped Prexie through a very difficult time. This event cemented a strong bond between the brothers, and brothers Luis and Rudy Tejeda, who were raised with the family. A true son of Texas, Prexie’s work ethic was forged in the fields at a young age and propelled him in life. It was in the same fields that he received his letter, calling him to serve his country. He received four bronze stars while serving in the Pacific Campaign in WWII. After the war, Prexie came home to begin the greatest journey of his life. He fell in love with and married Rafaela Salazar in 1950, in Cuero, TX. The couple had eight children, six boys and two girls. It was during these years, that Prexie instilled a sense of pride and self-worth in his children, always encouraging them to work hard, and “never let anyone call you lazy.” To those that knew him, Prexie was a sharp dressed and charismatic man, who could make you laugh, when you needed it the most. He was an incredible story teller, who entertained multiple generations of family and friends. Prexie was generous and kind, often giving to others until it hurt. He was unstoppable and never gave up, despite the odds or the challenges before him. He shared nuggets of wisdom filled with deep messages embedded in hilarity. He loved life and those that surrounded him, including his beloved dogs, whom brought him happiness and companionship. Prexie is preceded in death by his loving wife, Rafaela; and his daughter, Tomasa. He is survived by his children, Jose, Marion, Prexie Jr., Frankie, Jesse, Ray, Gloria, and their families. He leaves behind 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed. The family will receive visitors Sunday, November 15, 2015, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a 6 p.m. Rosary, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City, Texas. Rafaela Salazar Garcia
Rafaela Salazar Garcia, 80, of Bay City passed away July 14, 2007 at her residence. She and her twin sister were born August 18, 1926 in Cuero, Texas to Pasqual Guerrero Salazar & Victoria Ruiz Mireles Salazar. She was a wonderful mother, wife and sister who worked everyday of her life. As a young woman she often took her sons with her to pick cotton in the fields. Rafaela later spent 23 years working as a nurse’s aid at Matagorda General Hospital and the Legacy where she shared her loving spirit with others. Her devotion to family and willingness to sacrifice kept all of her children in school. Even in death her gracefulness & quiet strength brought growth and solidarity to her family. Survivors include her husband Praxedes “Prexie” Garcia, Sr.; sons Jose Luis Garcia & wife Imelda of El Paso, Marion Garcia & wife Rachel of Bay City, Praxedes “Prexie” Garcia, Jr. & wife Debbie of Galveston, Frankie Garcia & wife Wandy of Humble, Jesse Garcia & wife Anna of West Columbia and Ray Garcia of Sherman Oaks, CA; daughter Gloria Crouch & husband Jade of Bay City; sister Benilde Mendez of Robstown, TX; brothers Roman Martinez, Mariano Salazar and Juan Salazar all of Houston; seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Gerardo “Jerry” Garza, 60, of Lumberton, Texas, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015, in his home. He was born on March 18, 1955, in Bay City, Texas, to Maria Vasquez Garza and Francisco Garza. Jerry was an avid sports fan. His love of sports began with the Bay City Black Cats and the Dallas Cowboys, in his teens. As he grew older, he began following the children of his friends and family through Little Dribblers, Pop Warner, Little League, and school. Ultimately, coaching both of his own children in league play, and becoming their biggest fan. The only things he loved more than the Dallas Cowboys were the Lord and his family. He always went to Mass on Sunday, but you could determine what time the Cowboys were playing by which Mass he attended. Jerry was a devoted father, who never missed a game, performance, program, or special event, in the lives of his two boys, until he fell ill. He went to his eternal rest, in his sleep, in the arms of his wife, after a three year fight with cancer. Jerry was a long time employee of Classic Chevrolet in Beaumont, where he was affectionately known as “Trouble” because he liked to give everyone a hard time. Jerry was also a member of Infant Jesus Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. His family will be forever grateful for the love and support of both his work family and his church family. Jerry is survived by Joan, his wife and best friend of twenty-seven years; sons, Jeremy Garza and Joel Garza, whom he adored; brother, Alfred Garza and his wife Diane, of Florida; sister, Terry Gallegos and her husband Buddy, of Bay City; Ellie Thomsen and her husband Tom, of Oregon; Elda Garcia of Houston; Sylvia Ochoa and her husband Fino, of Corpus Christi; sister-in-law, Bea Garza of Houston; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Francisco Garza Jr. A Rosary for Mr. Garza was recited at 6:30 p.m., with a gathering of his family and friends that followed, Thursday, April 16, 2015, at Broussard’s Mortuary, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, April 17, 2015, at Infant Jesus Catholic Church, 243 South LHS Drive, Lumberton. Juan Vasquez Garza, 80, of Van Vleck, TX, entered into eternal rest December 30, 2015, surrounded by his family He was born March 26, 1935, in Edinburg, TX, to the late Julio Garza and Juanita Casarez Garza. Juan was known to everyone as Johnny. Johnny was raised by Mauro Vasquez and Amelia Guerra Vasquez, at the age of five years old. Johnny graduated from Edinburg High School in 1955, and soon enlisted in the Army Infantry. He married Elida Rivas on June 23, 1958. Elida was the love of his life, and they remained married for 49 years until Elida’s death, on July 22, 2007. Johnny and Elida had seven daughters, Catalina, Cynthia, Corina, Celeste, Christella, Carolina and Carmen. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents and step-parents; brothers, Erasmo Garza, Natividad Garza, Ramon Garza, Gregorio Garza and Julio Garza Jr.; sisters, Jova Miranda and unnamed twin, deceased at birth. Sarah M. Garza, 83, of Bay City, TX, passed away December 16, 2015. She was born July 28, 1932, in Cuero, TX, to the late Mateo Morales and Rafeala Lopez Morales. Sarah was a special kind of person. She had a giving heart, taking on the caregiver role, to many of her family and friends. She was active in her church, Our Lady of Guadalupe, offering up her time and service, as her health permitted. She was employed at the school district for 20 years, always working hard and always smiling. She enjoyed life also, garage sales and Tejano dancing, until her body wouldn't allow. She was a strong lady, surviving cancer several times. She will be missed dearly, as she was one of a kind, the selfless mother, giving sister, nurturing grandmother and loving aunt. Sarah was preceded in death by a great grandson, Matthew Ryan Garcia. Barbara Jean Gates, 69, of Bay City, Texas, passed away on December 30, 2015. Barbara was born on May 21, 1946, in Hallettsville, Texas, to Charles and Pearl Davenport. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Charles David Davenport; and her niece, Kim Edwards-Henderson. She is survived by Jimmy Gates of Bay City; their three children, Kevin Gates of Bay City, Brandi Davis and husband David Davis of Bay City, Kerri Gates of Bay City; and five grandchildren, Colin Davis, Chandler Davis, Madison Longoria, Naudia Villa and Olivia Villa. Barbara lived a life that reflected her love of family and helping others, with no judgement or hesitation. Whether she just met you or had known you her entire life, her kindness was everlasting. Those who did know her, understood that Barbara could fill a room with laughter, had a passion for cooking, and a green thumb like no other. Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie V. Gillespie were held Sunday, April 12, at 2:30 p. m. in the First Methodist Church with the Rev. John Berkley officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Born February 1, 1880, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, a daughter of John J. and Ida Denison Gould, she died Thursday, April 9, in El Campo after a lingering illness. She was married to Frank J. Gillespie, who preceded her in death in September 1958. They moved to the Turtle Bay community from Illinois in 1910, and to their home on East Bayshore in 1928. A member of the Methodist Church, she was a faithful worker and attendant as long as her health enabled her to do so. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alice Beard and Mrs. Mary Stewart of Palacios, one son, Roy E. Gillespie of Robstown; one sister, Mrs. Emily Davis of Clarksburg, W. Va.; two brothers, Marion D. Gould of Vincennes, Ind. and Wilmer Gould of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., fourteen grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Walter Nace Gilliam, 74, of Bay City, Texas, passed away Friday, September 18, 2015, under hospice care, at his residence. He was born December 23, 1940, in Paducah, Kentucky, to Walter and Francis Gilliam. Tip was a member of the IBEW Local 816, in Paducah. He was employed in nuclear plants over 35 years. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Doris; children, Crystal Travis, William Bill Gilliam, Joseph Gilliam, Greg and Shelia Hill; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Sandra Lynn Glenn of Victoria passed away August 27, 2015. She was born November 10, 1956 in Houston, Texas and attended school in Palacios, Texas where she graduated in 1975 and then attended college at the University of Houston majoring in music. Sandra married Robert Glenn on February 18, 2000 and had 15 wonderful years together in Victoria. Sandra is survived by husband, Robert Glenn of Victoria, mother Lynn Coffman of Victoria, father Colonel Ben Gomez retired of Austin, stepdaughter Melissa Holesovsky and husband BJ of Danbury, step-son Rocky Yackel and wife Miranda of Lavernia, four grandchildren, Blaine, Buddy, Jagger and Kalayni, five brothers, Michael Gomez, Gary Gomez, Dr. Ben Gomez, Danny Gomez, Daniel Coffman and their families along with many other relatives and friends that were close to her heart. Sandra was a talented musician who sang and played piano and organ for many different functions and also taught music and voice at various schools in the Victoria area and was the music director of Grace Presbyterian Church in Victoria. Sandra had a beautiful soul and was loved by everyone she met. Her family and friends are mourning the loss of this very special person that influenced and touched the lives of so many. Lorenzo Gonzales, 79, of Van Vleck passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. He was born on September 5, 1935 in El Maton, Texas to the late Ramon and Lola Vega Gonzales. Lorenzo was an avid fisherman. He loved working in his garden planting peppers and oranges. He truly had a green-thumb. In his younger years, he loved to barbeque and go dancing with his wife Mary. Lorenzo is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Mary Gonzales; children, Gloria Rodriguez and husband Noe of Lake Jackson, Domingo Gonzales of Van Vleck, Lora Gonzales Huerta and husband Alex of Clute; 15 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren; sister Francis Mendoza of Danevang , brothers Pete Gonzales, Raymond Gonzales, Augustine Gonzales and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents and sons, Lorenzo Gonzales Jr. and Guadalupe Gonzales. Sue Short-Goslin was born May 14, 1953, in Keene, New Hampshire, to Louise Marie-Ann Martin and John Edwards Short. She passed away at her home in Palacios, Texas, on September 19, 2015. Sue was raised in the New England area, and graduated from the Albany Medical College of Physical Therapy, in August 1975. She began her career as a physical therapist in the New England area, before relocating to Florida, where she met her husband Randy Goslin. Sue and Randy married August 23, 1977, and resided in Florida, until their move to Texas, in the late 1970’s. Sue worked in various locations in Texas until their move to Matagorda County, in the late 1990s. They have two children, a daughter, Christie Goslin, and a son, Adam Goslin. While living in Matagorda County, Sue was widely known by many, and touched so many lives, young and old, everywhere she worked: Matagorda General Hospital, Bay City I.S.D., Matagorda County Educational Services, Matagorda Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Matagorda House Healthcare Center, Ganado Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Garden Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Port Lavaca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Twin Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Sue was a “go-getter” and loved what she did, rarely saying NO. She met herself coming and going, always with a smile on her face and a skip in her step. Sue will be deeply missed by all. Sue was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Gary, Tim, and Mark Short. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Randy Goslin; her daughter, Christie Goslin; her son, Adam Goslin and his wife Jennifer; brother, Chris Short; three grandchildren, Katherine (17), William (15), and Lanie (10); and several nieces and nephews. Sue also leaves behind her fur kid, Sadie. A memorial service celebrating Sue’s life, will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at 2 p.m., at The Bay House, on The Legacy Campus, Bay City, Texas. G. W. Green, born in Wilburton, North Carolina, March 17, 1850, died at the home of his son, Bryant, in Francitas, Wednesday July 30, 1919, after a lingering illness, aged 69 years. He came to Texas in 1870, landing at Old Indianola, and had lived in Jackson, Lavaca and Matagorda counties. He was married to Miss Fannie Bell, 47 years ago Dec. 10, who survives him. To this union were born nine children, four sons and five daughters, all of whom are living, and the sons were with him when the summons came. Mrs. Green has been confined to her bed the past two months so the funeral services were held at the home in her presence Thursday morning, conducted by Eld. W. C. H. Marshall, after which the body, accompanied by the four sons, other relatives and a few friends, were conveyed to the Palacios cemetery and tenderly laid to rest. To the bereaved wife, children and relatives we with their numerous friends extend heartfelt sympathy.

Morris Ervin “Buddy” Greer, 88, of Van Vleck, TX, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, Thursday, December 17, 2015. He was born September 3, 1927, in Willis, TX, to Reginald and Gladys Yawn Greer. Morris served his country in the United States Army. He retired after 38 years of service, from Amoco Production Company. Morris served as an interim Justice of the Peace for Matagorda County, Texas. He was a 50 Year member of the San Jacinto Masonic Lodge #106 of Willis, TX; past Van Vleck ISD school board member; honorary member of the Van Vleck FFA; and past member of the Van Vleck Booster Club. Buddy’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cattle were some of the greatest joys in his life. Buddy was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Ann Bellnoski Greer of Van Vleck, TX; son, Jerry Greer and wife, Velma of Montgomery, TX; daughter, Stephanie O’Brien and husband, John of Van Vleck, TX; sisters, Bernice Walters of Conroe, TX, and Betty Jo Strozier and husband, AB of Willis, TX; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Marc, Lori, Connor, Kaitlynn, Carson, Ellie; and numerous nephews, nieces, and other loving family members. The family will receive visitors from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, TX. A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 21, 2015, at 11 a.m., at Willis Cemetery in Willis, TX. Mrs. Mary Gregory, well-known
teacher and long-time resident of Bay City, died peacefully on
June 18, 2002 at 8:50 p.m. at the Methodist Hospital in Houston.
She had an abundant , joyful life and was a blessing to her
family and friends. |

Courtney P. Grover, III, passed away early Tuesday morning from complications of the heart. He was preceded in death by his father, Courtney Perry Grover, Jr.; mother, Marian Bruce Grover; and sister, Marian Ashford. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Canales Grover; son, Harrison Grover; step-son, Hunter Canales; sister, Barbara Morris; brother, James Bruce Grover and wife Suzanne Savage Grover; and many nieces and nephews.
Courtney grew up in Bay City, Texas and graduated from Bay City High School in 1965 and then continued his education at the University of Houston. He then sought his law degree from Wittier College in California in 1981.
Upon graduation, Courtney joined the Houston law firm of Crain, Caton, James, and Womble where he practiced commercial real estate law for several years and then created a company to manage real estate portfolios. In 1993, he met his business partner of 18 years, Mr. Al Brende. In 1997, they formed The Land Tejas Companies who developed single family communities throughout the Houston area with the theme of gated communities known as Canyon Gate.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Friday, the 28th of August, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.The funeral service is to be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 29th of August, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 2200 Avenue E. in Bay City, where The Rev. Bradley J. Sullivan, Rector, is to officiate.
The interment will follow at Matagorda Cemetery in Bay City.

PALACIOS - Atatulfo Guerrero, age 82, of Palacios, Texas, passed
away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on
October 28, 2015.
Atatulfo was born in La Feria, Texas on April 9, 1934, to
Atatulfo Sr. and Rosa Galvan Guerrero. Atatulfo, also known by
many as 'Tito' or 'Joe' met his future wife Esperanza 'Hope'
Guerrero in Ingleside, Texas in 1952 where they married two
years later on August 1, 1954.
Atatulfo was a giving man who loved to visit family and friends
and had a lifelong interest in wrestling and gardening. He was a
regular at the Palacios Senior Citizens Center and a Deacon at
Solid Rock Fellowship in Palacios, Texas.

Funeral services for Gilbert Gutierrez, 48, of Bay City, will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at Green’s Mortuary Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Sam Flores of Lake Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. The family received friends from Noon until 8:30 PM Monday, May 10, in the Chapel of Green’s Mortuary.
Mr. Gutierrez was born September 25, 1950, in Victoria, to the late Gilbert Gutierrez Sr. and Simona Gutierrez. He died May 7. He was employed with Bay City ISD 12 years ago.
Mr. Gutierrez is survived by: his daughter, Irma Gutierrez of Victoria; sisters, Beatrice (and Sam) Flores of Lake Jackson, Denia (and Catarino) Garcia and Mary (and Rick) Waggoner of Bay City, Minnie (and Pete) Vela of Tivoli, Texas, and Delia (and Ruben) Martinez of Houston; brothers, Jerry Gutierrez of Bay City, Alfred Gutierrez and Raul (and Minexua) Gutierrez of Bay City; grandchild, Margo Cano of Victoria; sisters, Esmeralda (and John) Candelaria of New Mexico, Elida (and Angel) Trevino of Angleton, and Diana Reyna of Victoria.
Pallbearers will be Tom Flores, Steven Garcia, Richard Garcia, Anthony Silvas, Rudy Silvas, and Raul Gutierrez, Jr. Arrangements are with Green’s Mortuary.
