Loretta Faye Hall

January 18, 1926 - January 10, 2021

On Sunday, January 10, 2021, at 1:09 p.m. Loretta Faye Roden Hall, a week short of her 95th birthday, was ushered into the presence of the Lord.  She was born on January 18, 1926, in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, to Olin B. and Virgie Lou Roden.

Loretta, more affectionately called Mom, Grandma, Sis Hall, joined her loving husband, Reverend James Truett Hall; father and mother, Olin B. and Virgie Lou Roden; and sisters Dorothy Virginia Roden and Bettie Jo Freeman.  The words that the Apostle Paul wrote in Second Timothy 4:6-9 most aptly describes her last day.  She fought a good fight even until the end.  Her course on this earth is finished.  She has been a faithful servant of the Lord.  Therefore, a crown of righteousness awaits her. The family has great sadness but at the same time has peace that God has now given her a complete healing.

Loretta was survived by her sister Mary Nell Whalen (Elmer) of Texarkana; daughter Shirley (Mickey) Burwell of Webster; son James Truett Hall, Jr. (Susan Ashley) of Madison, Wisconsin; daughter Reva (Randy) Kitterman of Pearland; and daughter Reba (Allan) Kingsbury of Conroe.  She is survived by grandson James Gregory (Stephanie) Hall of Mansfield; grand-daughter Lorie Gayle (Scott) Batson of Ft. Worth; and grandson Brent Reid (Ruby) Phillips of Houston.  She is survived by great grandchildren James Gregory Hall, Jr. (Jessica Rodriguez) of Boston; Claire Hall and Michael Hall of Mansfield; Bryan Phillips, Elan Glenn, Emerson Glenn, and Ellison Glenn of Houston; and brother-in-law Gene Freeman.  She is survived by special friends Doris Swanner-Black and Katie White of Mt. Pleasant and Ruth Wistinghausen of Alvin, Texas.  In addition, there are many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was an amazing mother – big hearted, caring, beautiful, smart, and very talented – and treated her children like a mother hen, watching over all of them with great care.  Her many talents encompassed cooking (a hot meal each evening with a freshly made dessert), sewing (in one day she could make Reva and Reba a dress while they were at school).  She blessed many people with her singing songs of Praise to her Lord.  She started cooking and taking care of a home when she was a young girl and her parents worked in the fields.  She loved to work and do for others.

She was a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, granny, great grandmother and friend.  She was a faithful Christian lady who served the Lord with great joy, leaving a legacy of faith to all of those who knew her.  She and her husband made a great team, enjoying many special moments while working together and pastoring for over 40 years.

Her last few years were spent at Laurel Court Nursing Home in Alvin, and the family thanks those who took care of her there, as well as Paula DeSham who did mom’s hair weekly.  Our family would also like to thank everyone for your many thoughts, prayers, and expressions of love.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at the Alvin New Life Worship Center. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 12:00 P.M at the Alvin New Life Worship Center. 208 North Beauregard St. Alvin, Texas 77511. Interment will follow after services at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Bay City, Texas.

Howard Thomas Harper

December 18, 1946 - July 17, 2022

Howard Thomas Harper was born on December 18, 1946. He entered heaven on July 17, 2022.

He is survived by his beloved wife Shirley Webb Harper, his daughter Tasha Werner, sons Hunter Harper and Dennis Harper, and many grandchildren, his sister Mary McCaleb Franklin and her children Caren and Mahdroo McCaleb, a dear aunt, Helen Dunbar Cobble, and numerous cousins.

Howard grew up nearby on the Buckeye Ranch with his parents Melvin and Leona who predecease him. He bought his first cows when he was in junior high with money he earned picking up and burning oak stumps to help his father clear land for rice farming. Ever since Howard has loved being on the land, working cattle, spading levees, mowing pastures, or working on equipment. In his down time, you would find him with his nose in a book. Howard loved to read, and he read everything. He was a walking encyclopedia. He learned everything a man could except how to spell.

Most of us know Howard because of his service to Christ. He felt the call of God to be a preacher from a young age and went on to earn a doctorate in theology. He pastored many churches including the Mason Baptist Church, La Belle Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Markham, First Baptist Church of Matagorda and Midfield Community Church where his great grandfather had been a circuit rider Pastor over 100 years ago.

For his entire life Howard counseled the troubled, visited the sick, fed the poor, led mission trips and church retreats. Howard married or buried more of us than we can count. His Christlike service has reached far beyond his family and town, and we can feel the outpouring of love and support from the many who felt his impact. His passing leaves a big hole in many lives, and he will be deeply missed.

There will be a celebration of his life at the First Baptist Church of Markham at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2022, followed by a dessert reception afterward. Howard loved desserts.

Carol Harvey

March 3, 1932 ~ November 30, 2023

It is with grateful hearts that we remember the life of Carol Joyce Harvey who was born on March 3, 1932, in Houston, Texas. She was raised by her grandmother, Willie May Robinson, and cherished her childhood days filled with climbing trees, reading comics, and playing on the porch with her little brother, Garrett.

At the age of 12, Carol accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior, marking the beginning of her lifelong spiritual journey. She was baptized and faithfully served at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston under the guidance of Rev. WH Banks. Carol's educational journey included attending Ryan Elementary, Gregory School, and Crawford Elementary, all significant institutions for African American children in Texas. Her favorite subjects were science, math, and sewing. She furthered her education at what is now known as Texas Southern University,
previously Texas State University for Negroes, and pursued her passion for nursing, becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse.

Carol's journey in love began when she met LV Harvey while descending the stairs at the WT Grant Store, where her grandmother worked as a chef. They were joined in holy matrimony on August 7, 1948, on LV's parent's porch in Bellville, Texas. From this union, they were blessed
with three children: Cynthia McCoy (Ollie), Lavernia Newsome, and Garrett Harvey (Sandra), celebrating an incredible 74 years of marriage.

Throughout her life, Carol served as the First Lady alongside her husband, Rev. Dr. LV Harvey, at several churches, including Main Street Baptist Church in Brenham, Texas, St. Peter's Baptist Church in Hempstead, Texas, Second Baptist Church, Greater Second Baptist Church in Seguin, Texas, and Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City. Her unwavering dedication to faith spanned 65 years and, for the last 38 years, she faithfully attended and served at Ebenezer Baptist Church, a congregation founded and led by her husband and later by Rev. Dr. John Colbert.

Beyond her commitment to her family and church, Carol embarked on a remarkable 52-year nursing career that began in 1952 at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston. She worked at numerous hospitals, facilities, and schools, leaving an indelible mark on the healthcare field. Carol was also actively involved in various organizations including the National Counsel of Negro Women, Acres Homes Girl Scouts Troop Leader of the San Jacinto Counsel, PTA president at Carver and Anderson Elementary in Acres Homes, Mission II President in Lincoln District Association, and National Women Council of Nurses. She was a member of the National Baptist Foreign Missions board participating in the field in Jamaica, Panama, and Liberia for approximately 10 years. She had leadership roles in ministry with the Southern Baptist Convention, Angel Tree, and our Ebenezer Claypot Ministry. She played key roles in missions, ministry, and community outreach, impacting lives both locally and internationally. Carol's love extended beyond borders, and her travels were deeply tied to her ministry. She explored various parts of the United States and ventured internationally to Canada, Mexico, Italy, Sweden, and The Holy Land.

On November 30, 2023, Carol's earthly journey came to an end, and she answered the call of her Lord and Savior. She was preceded in death by her parents, Garrett and Georgia, her husband LV, her son and daughter Garrett and Lavern, granddaughter Aimee, Adrian Christopher, her brother Garrett Lee, and her sisters Leola Moore, Mary Ollie Taylor, Joyce Ann Taylor, and Alma Lee Blackman.

Dustyn Blake Hunt
September 24, 1980 - October 30, 2021

Dustyn Blake Hunt passed unexpectedly, after several battles with pneumonia, at the age of 41 on October 30, 2021, in Lake Jackson, Texas. He was born on September 24, 1980, in Galveston, Texas. As a child, Dustyn was an adventurous and free-spirited boy. He grew up loving music, fast cars, and family gatherings.

Dustyn had an amazing joy for life and his smile could light up an entire room. His laughter was infectious, and he would often have everyone in stitches crying with his silly antics. He loved to have a good time, whether he was dancing to music (full of bass of course), playfully teasing someone, or riding his bike all over the neighborhood striking up conversation with anyone he ran into. Dustyn’s regular karaoke concerts at home were often enthusiastic and received mixed reviews from his siblings. He was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at age 4, and though he had many obstacles over the years, he overcame every single one like a champ.

Dustyn attended Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, Texas, and graduated in 2002. There, he was beloved by students and staff alike. He took several vocational opportunities, enjoyed their class field trips to Sea World and the zoo, and was also nominated for the Torchbearer Award by his peers. This award was given each year to an inspiring student that graduated despite adversities. After high school, he attended a wonderful program at North Central Texas College in Corinth for special needs adults. He got to experience going to two proms, where he absolutely was the life of the party. Dustyn also enjoyed going to Spirit Horse, a therapeutic horse-riding program in Corinth, where he became fond of one horse in particular named Lollipop.

Though Dustyn was never married, he liked flirting, and would claim he had many “girlfriends” over the years. Dustyn made friends everywhere he went and seemed to never meet a stranger. He always looked forward to going on vacations with his family, especially if it was at the beach.

Dustyn loved his family fiercely and unconditionally. He is survived by his mother, Leah Kain, stepfather Tommy Kain, grandfather Ronnie Michalec, step-grandmother Carolyn Kain, sister Kaylie Deem and her husband Brandon, brothers Nicholas Barnett and Ethan Barnett, stepbrother Tommy Kain III, nephews Everett and Nolan, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his great grandmother Wanda Leach, great grandmother Liberta Michalec, grandmother Pat Koci, step-grandmother Judy Michalec, step-grandfather Thomas Kain, aunt Sissy, and uncle Ray Palmer and a very special caregiver, Miss Barbara.

A memorial service will be held, public invited, Saturday, November 13th at 2pm at the Nichols Street Church of Christ - 1200 Nichols Ave, Bay City, Texas.

A procession will follow to The Matagorda Historical Cemetery where he will be laid to rest.

All are welcome to a BBQ Reception in honor of our boy, more information to be given on the day of.

Ronald Gene Hyde

July 21, 1947 – August 22, 2021

Ronald Gene Hyde passed away on August 22, 2021, at his home in Van Vleck surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren. Known as Ronnie or Ron to many, he was born on July 21, 1947, in Orland, California to Jack and Virginia Hyde. The second of six children, his family lived in California, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa before settling in Groves, Texas where he met his wife of 49 years, Lucia. He managed two Pizza Inn restaurants in Louisiana while attending McNeese State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Ronnie was first and foremost a family man. In 1982, he and Lucia moved to Bay City where they raised their five children. They shared many summer family vacations driving coast to coast. He was known to include his love of history, Native American culture and western movies into family vacations, which led to many stops at any and every historical site and marker he could find along the way – even if it was a few (or many) miles out of the way.

His life was guided by faith, compassion and humor. He was an active member of Nichols Street Church of Christ, and his children fondly remember his days of driving the Joy Bus to pick up kids around town for Sunday church service. Ronnie was known to welcome people into his home when they needed a meal or a place to stay while going through difficult times. He lent an ear and shoulder to lean on to everyone and was not shy in offering bits of wisdom and advice. He became known as Brother Ron or Big R to his children’s friends.

Ron shared his time and accounting talent with his church, BayCel Federal Credit Union and the local school district. Being of service to others was a way of life for him.

Ron retired from South Texas Project where he worked in financial services. In his later years, he enjoyed being Poppy to his grandchildren and traveling the world with his wife. He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed spending time in his meticulously organized shop building things for his family, friends and anyone who asked. His youngest grandchild often says, “Poppy is the best builder in the world.”

The impact he had on everyone he met and the memories he created for his family are his legacy.

He is preceded in death by parents, Jack and Virginia Hyde, brother Philip Hyde and sister Pamela Kingston.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Lucia; children: Julie Hyde of Bay City, Stephanie Hyde Novicke and Keith of Sealy, Jerad Hyde of Palacios, Christopher Hyde and Sarah of Lago Vista, and Gena Hyde of Houston; six grandchildren: Rylee Novicke, Reece Novicke, Reghan Novicke, Brookelyn Hyde, Axel Hyde and Zoe Hyde; siblings Jerry Hyde and Liz, David Hyde and Jennifer, Cindy Hyde and Debbie and Randy Hyde and Matthew; his aunt Betty Allen and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank the wonderful health care teams at: UT Physicians and Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center, especially Drs. Hsu and Amsbaugh and staff member Flor; Brazosport Cancer Center, especially Dr. Draksharam and staff; Dr. Liberoni; Encompass Home Health; and Houston Hospice. They provided great care for Ronnie and support to his loved ones while he battled brain cancer.

We welcome you to visit with the family on Saturday, August 28 at 11 a.m. with a memorial service starting at Noon at Nichols Street Church of Christ, 1200 Nichols Ave, Bay City, TX 77414.
