August Johnson Dies In Wichita Falls, Tex.

M. K. Feather received a message from Charles Johnson at Wichita Falls, Texas, Saturday standing that his father, August Johnson had died that morning. Mr. Johnson made his home in Palacios a number of years. He was a wagon maker and blacksmith by trade and conducted a shop here up until about three years ago when he disposed of it on account of failing health. Since then he has spent the greater part of his time with his son Charles and family. He was optimistic and always jolly, although afflicted with deafness for some time. Everyone who knew him was his friend and his passing on brought sadness to them all. The Beacon joins the many friends of the bereft son and family in extending sympathy.

Richard Edward Johnson

October 18, 1952 - March 10, 2021

Richard Johnson, 68, of Palacios, Texas, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at his home. He was born October 18, 1952 in Houston, Texas to the late Richard Alan Johnson and Patricia Ann Griffin.

Richard spent his childhood traveling the world as the son of a military man. He settled back to his beloved home state of Texas where he met the love of his life Tamara. Richard would spend the rest of his life in the state of Texas, rarely leaving his beloved homeland and advocating for Texas to rise amongst the nations once again! Richard loved the outdoors and spending time in the woods with his friends and family. At thanksgiving you could find Richard and his dear friend Royce Sanford showering in the cold waters of Boykin Springs often times in 40-50 degree weather. You may have also found him hiking in the desolate lands of Big Bend state park or seen him float the Guadalupe River in his signature cut-off jeans. Richard enjoyed fishing, especially the waters of Carancahua Bay, and would often return from his trips with his limit in trout and redfish. Richard’s grandfather, Captain Bud as he was known, taught him to fish and would often tell him “you have to be smarter than the fish”, this was knowledge Richard would pass down to his sons and a phrase uttered in the family to this day. Another of Richard’s loves was working on and riding the Comanche & Indian Gap Railroad, an 1/8th scale railroad covering many acres on a ranch in Priddy, TX. Richard could be found at the ranch with his dear friend Frank Pickard. Frank and Richard could be found fixing track and riding the rails, often spending nights huddled around small fires along the railroad. These were referred to as hobo camps around the ranch and many good stories have been told and created at these camps. Above all in life Richard enjoyed a good party and was widely loved by all. He had friends from every walk of life and exhibited kindness and acceptance to anyone who would do the same for him. To know Richard, was to love him, and he was a blessing to his friends and family that will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Richard Alan Johnson and Patricia Ann Griffin, as well as his grandparents Albert and Frida Griffin, his granddaughter Skye and Great Grandson Uriah. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Tamara Johnson; his Sons and their wives Dustin and Mary and Shawn and DeAnn, his grandchildren Ashley, Destiny, Samantha, Amber, Dax, Trey, Raif, Colt, Jett, and Great Grandchild Emery.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date for family and friends.

Roberta Lee Downing Jurek

Roberta (Robbie) Lee Jurek, age 83, of Austin, joined her beloved Lord on October 12, 2022 in Vero Beach, Florida. Roberta was born on March 27, 1939, in Honolulu to Lt. John G. Downing and Benita (Harding) Downing. Her father was a Naval Academy graduate and officer who was killed at sea in the Pacific in November 1942.

After her father's death, her mother moved with Roberta and her infant brother to her maternal grandparents' home in Highland Park, Dallas, where she grew up. Roberta graduated from Highland Park High School and magna cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin in 1960 with a Bachelor's in Journalism and a B.A. in History. At UT, Roberta was a member of Delta Gamma, Phi Beta Kappa honor society, and Mortar Board National Honor Society. Roberta met Glenn Jurek in the fall of 1958 in the Christian Faith and Life Community at UT. Their courtship included picnics in the parks of the Texas Hill Country outside of Austin. They married on August 27, 1960, at Highland Park Presbyterian Church.

The young couple moved to Bethlehem, PA where Glenn attended the Moravian Theological Seminary. Roberta worked as a reporter locally and for the Associated Press. She and Glenn welcomed their first child, Jonathan Glenn, in 1962. During the divinity program, Glenn and Robbie with their newborn served a year in the 230-year-old Moravian missions of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John and St. Thomas. In 1964, Glenn graduated with a Divinity Master's degree and was ordained in the Unity of the Brethren Church in Texas. Roberta had their second child, Sarah Elizabeth, that year also. Glenn served as pastor in the Granger, Wall, and Houston Brethren churches. Roberta often fondly recalled the dear friends and families of the Brethren congregations.

In 1969, Roberta, now known by most as Robbie, followed Glenn to Matagorda County where he felt the call to farm like his immigrant Czech ancestors. They lived in Collegeport and later Bay City while Glenn farmed. Robbie was active in the First Presbyterian churches in Collegeport and Bay City. She taught high school English in Palacios and later took care of the bookkeeping for their farm operations.

In 1988, Robbie and Glenn returned to the Texas Hill Country for retirement. Robbie's mother also moved to Austin, and Robbie spent much time with her until Benita passed away in 2006. Donald Ray Justice

September 19, 1941 - January 12, 2021

Donald Ray Justice, 79, of Sweeny Texas passed away January 12, 2021. He was born September 19, 1941 in Tolleson Arizona to the late Duard Justice and Louise Neuman Justice.

He will be remembered first and foremost by his faith and love for his family. He was a continual reminder of Christ’s love as he walked in light and forgiveness. Many were saved as a direct result of his knowledge and candor. He never took a moment for granted, and always reflected God’s love. We are forever grateful to have called this strong and faithful servant our family.

For 59 years, he was devoted to his business, Justice Sand. There was no job too small and no challenge too big for him to tackle. He gave everything he had each day to succeed. He outworked most men, laughed often, and built a legacy in between.

He will forever be remembered for his childlike sense of adventure. His joy was on display every time he was behind the wheel of any off-road vehicle. Age was never a factor. He was always determined to show up anyone who dared him. From taking his 9-year-old grandson bungee jumping, to white water rafting, he took every bit of joy there was to find in life. His favorite catch phrase was “JUST GAS IT”! He didn’t know how to back down. Nothing gave him more excitement than to share this passion for life with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was strong, resilient, and unshakable.

The love he showed to his family will never compare to the love he had for his beautiful wife Doyleen. During their 60 years of marriage, God’s love and mercy was woven all through it and was viewed by all as the perfect marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Doyleen Lee Coston Justice; daughters Dianna Hales and husband Kenny Hales; Shelly Weeks and husband Bret Weeks; Julie Surber; Paula Grizzle and husband Jay Grizzle; sisters Christine Brooks and Mary Ann Starns; grandchildren Jered Hales and wife Lindsey Hales, Jennifer Brown and husband Andrew Brown, Holly and Brittany Weeks, Brody and Luke Surber; great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Crosby Hales, Elliott, Everett and Emerson Brown, and Brynlee Ashcraft.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Duard Justice, Jr., Glen Justice, Delton Justice and Patsy Zenker.

Visitation will be from 1PM until 2PM Friday, January 15, 2021 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 2:30 PM Friday at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers are Jered Hales, Stephen Harvey, Wesley Harvey, Thomas Calk, Robbie Zenker and Mark Brooks. Honorable pallbearers are Jay Harvey, Scott Dessell & Billy Campbell.
