Miss Jennie Lee

March 29, 1895 – August 30, 1913

Miss Jennie Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lee, both deceased, died this morning at 7 o’clock at the home of Mr. Jeff Mangum, in this city, in the eighteenth year of her age and will be buried in Cedarvale Cemetery tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock.

This sad death, although looked for many months, came as a shock to the many friends of the young lady. For a long time Miss Lee has suffered from that dreaded disease, consumption, and all that could be done for her proved fruitless.

Her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Lee, are both dead. She leaves several sisters and brothers.

Decedent was a consecrated Christian and bore the ravages of her affliction with true Christian stoicism and fortitude, never murmuring against her trials or the sure fate which she knew awaited her. Her’s was a life of suffering, of sadness and illness, but Death, the alleviator of all earthly pain, has borne her to an eternity of triumphal glory and happiness.

The Tribune joins the many friends and relatives in the profoundest sympathy in their sad bereavement.

Men Sacrifice Own Lives Rescue Women in the Group

Grim tragedy overtook a fishing party Sunday morning on Peyton’s Creek and claimed the lives of three Bay City men when a small motor boat sank.

H. E. Lewis, Sr., 47, Hamman Road.

Henry Lewis, Jr., about 20, son of the elder Lewis.
A. A. Lewis, 45, 1220 Ave. F, brother of H. B. Lewis.

Confined to the Matagorda County General Hospital Sunday were:

Mrs. H. B. Lewis, Sr.

Mrs. A. A. Lewis

Dorothy Lewis, 14, junior high student and daughter of A. A. Lewis

Lorene Lewis, 9, daughter of A. A. Lewis

Jessie Lewis, 6, daughter of H. B. Lewis, Sr.

Also in the fishing party of nine was Leroy Lewis, 19-year-old son of H. B. Lewis, Sr., who did not require hospitalization.

The fishing accident occurred about 100 yards from the old Peyton Creek Bridge, south of Wadsworth, at around 11:17 o’clock Sunday morning. The two families had left Bay City at around 10 o’clock in the morning to go fishing. At the time of the accident, all except A. A. Lewis and Leroy Lewis were on the boat. None of the persons admitted to the hospital is in serious condition. One girl, Jessie Lewis, was released Sunday night, and Dorothy and Lorene Lewis will be released today.

At the scene of the accident, the creek is about 30 yards wide and ranges in depth from 10 to 12 feet. The boat capsized and sank about mid-way between the banks. It was a 16-footer. Leroy Lewis said he and his uncle, A. A. Lewis, were on the bank and jumped into the water when the boat went down and heard the women and children screaming. All the men knew how to swim, but the women didn’t, he said.

Aiding in the rescue of the women were two fishermen who were nearby. One dove into the water and another came up on a cabin boat. One of the men was identified as Alex Gavender. Mrs. A. A. Lewis and Mrs. H. B. Lewis were helped into the boat and the three girls were brought to shore.

A Taylor Brothers and a Matchett-Newman ambulance were involved in an accident on 7th Street and Avenue F as they were bringing two bodies to Bay City. Neither of the ambulances was damaged very much. Charges have been filed on a woman for failure to yield right of way to emergency vehicles. Matchett-Newman Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements for the dead men. Arrangements have not been completed yet.

In relating the story of the accident, Dorothy Lewis said: “We were in the boat in Peyton’s Creek near the bridge. It was pretty wide and very deep. In the boat were my mother, my uncle and aunt, my sister Lorene, my cousin Jessie, my cousin Junior Lewis, and myself. My father and Leroy were on the bank. The boat sank. Mother and my aunt didn’t know how to swim and father and Leroy came into the water. A man tried to help me, but I told him I knew how to swim and told him to go help the others. I swam out and helped my sister and my cousin out. Leroy told me to go get help. I was very scared and frightened, but I ran barefooted for about a mile to Mr. Bell’s house. A car was parked out in front, so I honked the horn until somebody came out. We got in the car and drove back to the creek. “ Dorothy said her father had drowned and said they had left Bay City at around 10 o’clock. This morning, Leroy Lewis said his father’s watch had stopped at 11:17 and added that this was apparently the time the boat sank.

H. B. Lewis, Sr. was a longtime employee of the city. He was street and bridge foreman at the time of his death. Henry Lewis, Jr. was also employed by the city as a truck driver. A. A. Lewis was a painter here.

Mrs. A. A. Lewis and Mrs. H. B. Lewis are reported to be in good condition at the hospital.
