Macha Funeral Is Held Today

Final rites for retired farmer Adolph Macha, 78, were held at 10 a. m. Thursday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Blessing, with Rev. Joe Hamala officiating at the mass. Rosary was recited at 6:15 p. m. Wednesday at Taylor Brothers Chapel. Interment was in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Survivors include: five daughters, four sons and one sister.

Alfred “Jack” Macha

Alfred “Jack” Macha, 59, of Midfield died Nov. 26 at the Matagorda General Hospital. He was a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing. Survivors include: sisters, Rose Kennedy of Amarillo, Hilda Jalufka of Blessing, Della Burch of Rosenberg, Mary Hone of Houston, and Lucy Evans of Galveston; brothers, Adolph Macha of Pecos, Otto Macha of Victoria, and Victor Macha of Baton Rouge. Funeral services will be held Nov. 29 at 2 p. m. at the Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Father Jerome Stryk officiating. Interment will be at the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing. Rosary will be held at 7 p. m. Nov. 28 at the Taylor Bros. Chapel. Arrangements with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Mrs. Macha Of Blessing Dies

Mrs. Mary Witt Macha, 77, of Blessing passed away at Matagorda General Hospital Friday. Funeral services were held at Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel at 8:45 a. m. and moved to St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing at 9:30 a. m. for mass, Rev. Edwin Bily officiating.

Rosary was held at Taylor Brothers Sunday night at 7:30. Interment was held in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Rosie Kennedy of Amarillo, Mrs. Hilda Jalufka of Blessing, Mrs. Della Burch of Rosenberg, Mrs. Mary Honc of Houston and Mrs. Lucy Mae Evans of Galveston; four sons, Alfred of Blessing, Adolf of Rosenberg, Otto of Victoria and Victor of Baton Rouge, La.; three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Myska of Beasley, Mrs. Emma Omerzu and Mrs. Agnes Svetlik, both of Weimar; two brothers, Gus Witt of LaGrange and Henry Witt of Aldine; 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Svetlik, Billy Jalufka, Steve Janecka, August Macha, Frank Macha and Adolph Janecka.

John Marek, 87, Of Blessing Dies

John Marek, 87, of Blessing passed away in Hilje Tuesday morning. Rosary will be at 8 p. m. Wednesday from Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel.

Services will be Thursday beginning at 9 a. m. at Taylor Brothers and the mass will be at 9:30 a. m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Father Vaclav Bily will officiate.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Alfred Kopecky of El Campo and one son, Frank Marek of Edna.

Pallbearers will be Louis Guresky, Frank Kacer, George Orsak, Joe Saha, Louis Popek and Joe Hickl.

Requiem Mass Today For Mrs. Mary Marek

BLESSING—Requiem mass for Mrs. Mary Marek, 81, was held Monday morning at St. Peter Catholic Church in Blessing.

Mrs. Marek, who died Saturday in Matagorda General Hospital, was born Aug 15, 1879.

Rosary was said at Taylor Brothers Funeral Chapel Sunday night by Rev. John Matocha, who also officiated at mass services.

Mrs. Marek had been a longtime resident of the Blessing Community where she was active in the KJZT and Altar Society.

Surviving are her husband, John Marek; one daughter, Mrs. Alfred Kopecky, El Maton; one son, Frank Marek, Edna; five sisters and one brother.

Interment was in St. Peter Catholic Church Cemetery.

Mary A. McCord

PALACIOS—Mary A. McCord 93, of Palacios died Saturday, Oct. 26, 1996.

She was born January 30, 1903, in Baylor County to the late John and Mary Horkey Hanzelka. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Blessing.

Survivors: daughter, Evelyn Herrod of Palacios; two great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, two sisters and one grandson.

Visitations will begin at 2 p. m. today at Kubena Funeral Home.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p. m. tonight at the funeral home.

The body will be taken to St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing at 10 a. m. Monday where visitations will begin at 1 p. m.

Steven Craig McDonald

Steven Craig McDonald, D. O., EMT-P, 32, of Temple, Texas, died October 10, 1997. Formerly a resident of Deer Park and a graduate of Deer Park High School, Texas A&M University and Kirkville College of Osteopathic Medicine at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas. Dr. McDonald served on the following committees, EMS Committee, American College of Emergency Physicians, EMS Committee, Texas College of Emergency Physicians, EMRA Council Representative, Texas A&M University EM Program, ACOEP EMS committee (1996-97), ACOEP Work Force Study Task Committee, ACOEP, Counselor on The ACOEP Council (1996-97) also served as Resident Advisor, Emergency Medical Student Association, TAMU-COM, Speaker of the Representative Council, EMRA (1995-96), Administrative & Bylaws Committee Chairperson, EMRA (1994-95). He held memberships in the following, ACEP, ACOEP, EMRA, SAEM, TCEP, AMA, AOA, KCOM Emergency Medicine Club (charter president and founder), Dr. McDonald was also the President Elect/Treasurer of the EMRA Board of Directors (1996-97). He also served as medical director of Brucevlle-Eddy City EMS and was the Bruceville-Eddy Athletic Team Physician.

Survived by his loving parents, Val and Susie McDonald of Deer Park; sister, Sherry Taylor and husband Terry of Pasadena; brother, Sherwin McDonald of Fairfield, CA; fiancée, Samantha Roworth, D. O. of Shaker Hts., OH; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Pallbearers, Richard Haydock, Greg Bridgers, Greg Morgan, Scott Willis, Jay Cloud, and Chipper Maness. Honorary Pallbearers will be the emergency resident physicians and staff physicians at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas.

Robert F. Merta

MIDFIELD - Robert Frank Merta, 78, of Midfield, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004.

He was born Sept.12, 1926, in Taiton, to the late Vaclav and Ludmilla Kotyza Merta. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a farmer and rancher, a member of KJZT, and a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing.

Survivors: wife, Louise Belicek Merta; daughters, Lou Naiser and Janice Smaistrla, both of El Campo; Cathy Merta of Midfield; Donna Holub of Schulenburg, Marilyn Barta, Darlene Schneider, and Michelle Ottis, all of Bay City; sons, Michael Merta of Alice, Robert Lynn Merta of Danevang, and Mark Merta of El Campo; sisters, Rosalie Smith of Galveston, Agnes Sandolovic of Texas City, and Elizabeth Kacal of Bay City; brothers, Jim Merta of San Antonio, Jerome Merta and Charlie Merta, both of El Campo; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by: sisters, Christine Kulcak and Annie Kulcak; brothers, John Merta, Joe Merta, and William Merta.

Robert Frank Merta

Robert Frank Merta, age 78, of Midfield passed away in December 4, 2004 following a sudden illness. He was born in Taiton on September 12, 1926 to the late Vaclav and Ludmilla Kotyza Merta.

He was drafted into the United States Army on February 26, 1945 and served most of his time in Manila, Philippine Islands. He was discharged on December 3, 1946. He married the former Louise Lily Bilicek on October 8, 1947 at St. John’s Catholic Church in New Taiton. They made their home in El Campo and purchased the Shiner Beer Distributorship in 1949. In October of 1950 he was recalled to the U. S. Army served with the artillery unit during the Korean War. In 1955 he sold the Shiner Beer Distributorship and bought a farm in Midfield where he has resided the past 49 years. He was a farmer and rancher, a member of the KJT Society, a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where he was a lector and Eucharistic Minister.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Louise Lily Bilicek Merta of Midfield, children Michael Merta and wife Freda of Alice, Lou Naiser and husband Jerry of El Campo, Bobby Merta of Danevang, Cathy Merta of Midfield, Janice Smaistrla and husband Roy of El Campo, Donna Holub and husband Wayne of Schulenburg, Marilyn Barta and husband Mike of Bay City, Mark Merta and wife Regina of El Campo, Darlene Schneider and husband Ray of Bay City and Michelle Ottis of Bay City; 13 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; brothers, Jim Merta and wife Margaret of San Antonio, Jerome Merta and wife Mary Jo of El Campo and Charlie Merta and wife Ella of El Campo; sisters Rosalie Smith of Galveston, Agnes Sandalovic of Texas City and Elizabeth Kacal and husband Raymond of Bay City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John, Joe and William Merta, and sisters Christine Kulcak, Annie Kulcak, Mary McDonald and Bessie Merta.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1 p. m. until 5 p. m. at the Triska Funeral Home in El Campo and from 6:45 p. m. until 7:30 p. m. at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing.

A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p. m. on Tuesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Wednesday at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Samuel Appiasi officiating. Interment will be at the St. Peter’s Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post 251 of El Campo.

Pallbearers are Rodney Smaistrla, Brent Holub, Blake Holub, Jerry Wayne Hickl, Billy Merta, Andrew Merta, Lucas Schneider and Jonathan Schneider. Honorary pallbearers are Kristy Merta, Misty and Cory Mogliolo, Kari Naiser, Carter Dale, Audry Smaistrla, Holly Holub, Miranda Barta, Morgan Barta, Emily Ottis and Coy Magliolo.

Aurelia Michalik

Funeral services for Aurelia Michalik, 91, of Palacios were to be held at 10 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios with the Rev. Dan Morales officiating. Burial followed at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing.

A rosary was recited at 7 p. m. Monday at Palacios Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Michalik was born Jan. 29, 1906, in Brno, Czechoslovakia, to Frank and Anna Hojsak Mikesh and died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997, at DeTar Hospital in Victoria.

A lifelong resident of Palacios, Mrs. Michalik immigrated to the United States in 1910 through Ellis Island. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, the KJZT and the Catholic Daughters.

She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Michalik George of Lumberton, Tex., Mary Jane M. Tedder of Kerrville, Agnes Michalik Winans of Channelview and Lucille Michalik Henderson of Pearland; by seven sons, John Michalik of Silver Springs, Md., Paul Michalik of Port Lavaca, Edward Michalik of Pasadena, Raymond Michalik of Brazoria, Charles Michalik of Palacios, James Michalik of Palacios and Frank Michalik of El Maton; by three brothers, Frank Mikesh of Portland, Ore., Charles Mikesh of Scappoose, Ore., and John Mikesh of Vancouver, British Columbia; by 28 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John A. Michalik, three sisters, Mary Mikesh, Julia Kocarnik and Helen Bukovi, and by two grandchildren, David Michalik and John Michalik.

Pallbearers were Tommy George, John Tedder, Troy Michalik, Allen Michalik, John Borgerstock, Charles Michalik Jr., Mike Winans and Brian Michalik.

Honorary pallbearers were Gary George, Donnie Tedder, Christopher Michalik, Rob Borgerstock, Michael Michalik, Joey Michalik and Danny Winans.

Memorials may be made to the Friends of Elder Citizens or the Stained Glass Fund at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Eva Michalik Dies In Rest Home, Rites Held Saturday

Religious services for Mrs. Eva Michalik were held Saturday morning, December 22, at 10 a. m. in St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The Rev. Patrick O'Farrell officiated at the Requiem Mass. Interment  was in the Catholic Cemetery in Blessing, Texas.

She died early Thursday morning, December 20, at the home for the aged in Hillje.

Born May 16, 1866, in Czechoslovakia, she came to the United States in 1906 and moved from Oregon to this area in 1928. She was married to Martin Michalik adn to this union were born seven children. She was preceded in death by her husband in December 1941, three daughters, Betty Krupicka, Ann Ptacek and Agnes Bizoc and one son, Henry.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Matl of Houston and Mrs. Eva David of Cameron, Texas and one son, John Michalik of Palacios and many grandchildren.

John A. Michalik

Requiem mass for John A. Michalik will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 21, with Rev. Michael Harrold officiating. Interment will be in the Catholic Cemetery in Blessing.

Rosary was recited at the Palacios Funeral Home Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. by members of the K.J.Z.T. at 8:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus and at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Born June 3, 1900 in Czechoslovakia, a son of the late Martin and Eva Hanzal Michalik, he had been a resident of this area for 39 years. He was a farmer and a retired employee of Alcoa’s Point Comfort Operations. He died Monday morning, December 18, in Wagner General Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Aurelia Michalik of Palacios, four daughters, Mrs. Dorothy George of Beaumont, Mrs. Agnes Winans of Channelview, Mrs. Janie Tedder of Bay City and Mrs. Lucille Bargerstock of Shelby, Ohio; seven sons, John L. of Santiago, Chili, Paul J. of Port Lavaca, Edward L. of Pasadena, Raymond E. of Brazoria, Charlie W. and Jimmy T. of Palacios and Frank J. of El Maton; one sister, Eva David of Cameron and 23 grandchildren.

Joyce Marie Miller

Joyce Marie Miller, 39, a resident of El Campo died Oct. 7 in a Houston Hospital. Survivors include; husband, Raymond Miller; 2 daughters, Sharon and Pamela; son, Mark of Blessing; Linda of Louisiana, Keith, Becky and Sonya of El Campo; mother, Mrs. Frank Henkes; 6 sisters, Dorothy Mazyn, Betty Jean Jozwiak, and Annette Naiser all of Houston, Lorene Buff and Mary Ann Freeman of Bay City, Eleanora Davis of Niceville, Florida; 2 brothers, James Henkes of Collegeport and Billy Henkes of Palacios. Funeral service will be held Thursday Oct. 10 at 10 a. m. at the Triska Funeral Chapel in El Campo with Rev. Henke of the St. Phillip’s Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be at the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing with Rev. Stryk assisting. A Rosary will be held tonight at the Triska Funeral Home at 7:30 p. m.

John G. Moffet & James Moffet

On the morning of Sept. 2nd, 1932, occurred the death of one of our highly respected citizens, Mr. John G. Moffet, at the home of his son, Donald, in Altadena, Calif.

Mr. Moffet was 81 years and 14 days old, at the time of his passing and up to a year ago was very active, since then he has been in failing health and two months ago he and Mrs. Moffet made the trip to California to be with Donald and near two brothers and a sister.

He has lived three miles north of Palacios for 22 years and has developed from barren land one of the finest orchards in this vicinity, leaving it, a living monument to his untiring efforts.

He was a man of the highest integrity and sweet nature and will be missed and mourned by all who knew him.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and two sons, Donald of Altadena, Calif., and Arthur, of Kerrville, Tex., besides four brothers and three sisters.

On Saturday morning following his death, his brother, James W. Moffet, of Barton, N. D., followed him, very suddenly, there being less than 30 hours between their deaths.

Mr. James Moffet is well known in Palacios, having visited here winters for many years.

Interment was in Inglewood, Cemetery, near Los Angeles, California.

Lad Mondrik

Mondrik, Lad, age 75, a resident of Palacios, passed away in his home on April 20. He had lived in Matagorda County since 1927. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Minnie Mondrik, Palacios; three daughters, Mrs. Martha Salas, Markham; Mrs. Rosie Olsovsky, Victoria; Mrs. Elenora Hajovsky, Ganado. Also, five sons, George, El Campo; Jerry, Louise; Frank, Blessing; Robert, Houston; Eddie, Palacios. Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Antonio Mucha and Mrs. Adolfina Korch of Czechoslovakia. Rosary will be said Wednesday, April 21, 7;30 p. m., Taylor Brothers Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a. m. Thursday, April 22, St. Peter’s Church, Blessing, with Father Jerome Stryk officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eugene Salas Jr., Sylvester Hajovsky Jr., George Mondrik Jr., James Hajovky, Charles Olsovsky and Ivan Vacek. Arrangements made through Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Filomena Henrietta Mondrik

Mrs. Filomena Henrietta Mondrik, 74, died in her home in El Maton March 19, 1976. She was born Aug. 8, 1901 in Fayette County. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Martha Salas of Markham, Mrs. Eleanora Hajovsky of Ganado and Mrs. Rosie Olsovsky of Victoria; five sons, George and Jerry of El Campo, Robert of Houston, Frank of Blessing and Edward of El Maton; four sisters, Mrs. Tillie Vacek of East Bernard, Mrs. Wilma Horak of Weimar, Mrs. Angeline Dusek of Schulenburg and Mrs. Mary Adamcik of Angleton; 32 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The funeral was at 10 a. m. Monday in St. Peter’s Church in Blessing with the Rev. Jerome Stryk officiating. Interment will be in St Peter’s Cemetery Pallbearers were Charlie Olsovsky Jr., Donald Olsovsky, James Hajovsky, Johnny Salas, George Mondrik Jr. and David Mondrik. Benito Moreno

Funeral services for Benito Moreno, 48, of Blessing will be held 11 a. m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Blessing, with the Rev. Peter Higgins officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing. Rosary will be said 8 p. m. Tuesday at St. Peter’s Church.

Mr. Moreno was born March 21, 1944 in Mexico to Ignacio and Santo Sanchez Moreno and died March 14, 1993 at El Campo Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of the Catholic church. Mr. Moreno was a former resident of Brenham who had lived in Blessing for three years.

Survivors include his mother, Santo S. Moreno of Mexico; two sisters, Erlinda Garcia of Mexico and Lucy Romo of Cover, Fla.; and three brothers, Enrique Moreno of Mexico, Armondo Moreno of Port O’Connor and Jose Moreno of Blessing.

Pallbearers will be Juan Moreno, Joe Esquivel, David Esquivel, Joe Moreno, Polo Picon and Martin Flores.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Ramiro Moreno, Sr.

Funeral services for Ramiro Moreno, Sr., 41, will be 10 a. m. Monday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Blessing with the Rev. Peter Higgins officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Blessing. Rosary will be 7 p. m. Sunday at Palacios Funeral Home.

Mr. Moreno was born July 1, 1948, Ignacio and Santos Moreno of Guadalupe, Mexico, and died May 3, 1990, at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria.

He is survived by his wife, Justa Esquivel Moreno of LaWard; mother, Santos Moreno of Mexico; six children, Marie, Marisela, Juanita, Ramiro, Guadalupe and Ignacio Moreno, all of LaWard; two sisters, Lucivena Ramos of Florida and Ernlinda Garcia of Mexico; and four brothers, Armando Moreno of Georgia, Benito Moreno of Brenham, Jose Ignacio of Blessing and Enrique Moreno of Mexico.

Sanitos Moreno

Santitos Moreno, six-months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jose Ignacio Moreno of Blessing, died Sunday at 7:50 p. m. in a Bay City hospital following a short illness.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10 a. m. at Blessing Catholic Cemetery under direction of Rendon Funeral Home.

The baby was born Jan. 6, 1976, in Thomaston, Ga.

Survivors other than her parents, including Mr. and Mrs. Alberto Esquivel of Blessing, maternal grandparents, and Mr. and Mrs. Ignacio Moreno of Piedras Negras, Mex., paternal grandparents.

Mary Vacek Morris

Funeral services for Mary Vacek Morris, 67, of Midfield, were held at 2 p. m. today at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Blessing, where the Rev. Dan O’Brien officiated. Burial was in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Blessing.

Mrs. Morris was born Oct. 7, 1917, in Fayette County, Texas, and died Dec. 8, 1984, at Matagorda General Hospital.

A resident of Midfield for six years, she was a member of the Catholic church.

Survivors include: her mother, Mary Vacek of Midfield; a brother, Robert Vacek of Guy, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Morris; her father, Peter Vacek; and brothers Julius and Pete Vacek.

Her nephews served as pallbearers.

Emil J. Morris

Funeral Mass for Emil J. Morris, 84, of Blessing will be at 11 a. m. Friday, April 24 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing with Rev. Peter Higgins officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing.

A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 tonight, April 23 at St. Peter’s.

Morris passed away Wednesday, April 22 in Bay City.

He was born May 6, 1913 to John Karl Morris and Frances Orsak Morris.

He was a resident of the Blessing area since 1947, was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, a member of the S. P. J. S. T. and served as a President and Secretary, and was a member of the R. B. O. S.

He was voted “Outstanding Cotton Farmer of the Year” in 1996.

Morris is survived by his wife, Marie Morris of Blessing; a daughter and son-in-law, Rosemarie and Jimmy Maroul of Dickinson, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Carol Morris of San Antonio; a sister, Betty Kana of Palacios; a brother, Alvin Morris of Scott, Miss.; four grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Louis, Willie, Edward, Ludwig, and Eugene Morris.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mary Elizabeth Smith Murphy

Blessing friends and relatives were shocked when the sad tidings came of the passing of Mrs. J. O. Murphy at the Victoria hospital, Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church at Blessing Tuesday at 9 o’clock. Rev. J. J. Hanacek and Rev. A. J. Weber of Nada performed the ceremonies. Rev. J. Smith, nephew of the deceased was also present.

Mrs. Murphy had been a resident of Blessing for over 32 years and at the time of her death she was 65 years of age.

Mrs. Murphy is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Claude Riley and Mrs. John Ley both of Victoria. One son, Mr. John Murphy, Jr., of Blessing.

The people of Blessing extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family in this hour of grief.
