George Emery McGee, 63, of Midfield, died Thursday morning at 2:30 at the Matagorda General Hospital. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. O. Summerfield of Baytown and Miss Bertie McGee of Midfield; one son, Carrol D. of Midfield and one sister, Mrs. B. Aycock of Nursery. Services will be Saturday morning at 10 from Taylor Bros. Sam Anthony Maglitto passed away January 8, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 85 years old. Sam was born November 1, 1928 to Dave and Rosalie Maglitto in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Tomball High School and the University of North Texas. Sam was an educator at BCISD for over 30 years. His love and dedication to children touched many lives. He was active in the Lions Club, the Bay City Chamber of Commerce, Texas Retired Teachers Association and many other local organizations. His fondest times were singing with the Coastaliers, traveling to Honduras for missions, serving his community, and playing the harmonica for his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. Some of his achievements include Outstanding Man of the Year 1977, Lifetime member of Lions Club, Melvin Jones Award for Humanitarian Service 1994 and 2008, Volunteer of the Year Matagorda General Hospital and Matagorda House 1986, Lion of the Year 1987, Black Cat Relays dedicated in his honor 1988, Honduras Medical Mission Team 1993-2008, Inductee into Black Cat Hall of Fame 2008. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Martha, his children, Mike Maglitto, Delaine Faseler (Bob), Cathy Green (Henry), and Mark Maglitto. He is also survived by his brothers Dave Maglitto and Carl Maglitto, his grandchildren Bridget Brown, Gina Green, Phillip Faseler (Erin), Paul Faseler (Deena), Jenny Sloan (Kevin), Payton Faseler, Natalie Maglitto and great grandchildren Nicole, Brice, Audrey, Blake, Patrick, Cameron and Claire, as well as many nieces and nephews. The Visitation/reception will begin at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 11, 2014 in the Parish Hall of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Bay City. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM with Rev. Brad Sullivan officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Coney, Spencer Green, Walter Jefferson, Bobbie Kimball, Dick Quinn, Melvin Stone, Burt Williams and all of his former Black Cat Students. Funeral services were held on Wednesday last week for A. D. Magruder, 48, district manager of the Central Power & Light Company at Victoria. Mr. Magruder lived in Bay City as district engineer for C. P. & L. for several years and had many friends. He was stricken with a heart attack sitting at his desk. Services were held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Victoria with the Rev. Charles Hill officiating. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. J. R. Martin of San Antonio; his wife, Mrs. Jean Watson Magruder; two sons, Leonard and Walter; a daughter, Jean; a sister, Mrs. Alice Murphy of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Maher Lois Blake Keller Maher, 98, formerly of Sweeny, passed away February 6, 2009. She was born November 28, 1910 in Collegeport, TX to the late Roy E. Coffin and Alma McSparran Coffin. Lois was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sweeny and was the organist there for many years. Her husbands, Ludwin Keller & Johnny Maher, and daughter Sue Keller all preceded her in death. Survivors include: sons & their wives Kerry & Earline Keller of Port Lavaca, and Rex & Exa Mae Keller of Sweeny; cousin Jean Barrow & husband Mac of Alvin; grandsons Craig, Lane, Keith & Brad Keller; 9 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. Robert Joseph Mahoney, DDS, died May 20, 1997 at Citizen Memorial Hospital in Victoria. Mahoney was born Jan. 5, 1942 in Brownwood to John J. and Kathleen Laswell Mahoney. Mahoney was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios. He had practiced Dentistry for 31 years, the last nine in Palacios where he had the Mahoney Clinic. Mahoney was a Fellow of Academy of General Dentistry, a life member of the American Dental Association, a life member of the Texas Dental Association, a member of the Guadalupe Valley Dental Services, was a third generation Texas, and a member of the Sons of The Republic of Texas, life member of the Optimist International, member and past President of the Palacios Rotary Club, former vice president of the Palacios Little League and an announcer of the games, and a member and past director of the Palacios Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include wife, Linda Wiesepape Mahoney of Palacios; three sons, Bobby, Christopher and Andrew Mahoney all of Palacios, and by his mother Kathleen Laswell Simmons of Austin. Chronicle News Services Bay City—Services will be held today at 2 p. m. at the First Methodist Church for Lewis M. Matchett, 71, Bay City tax assessor-collector who died Wednesday. He was a charter member of Bay City Lions Club and had served as its secretary since its organization in October, 1940. He was a former zone chairman and deputy district governor of Lions Dist. 284. Matchett and another Lions member, Harry Moseley, originated the idea and underwrote the building of Bay City High School’s Memorial Stadium with assistance of the Lions Club. For many years he was a member of the board of Bay City Independent School District and served as its president and secretary. He was a longtime member of the Matagorda County Tuberculosis Assn., a member of the Methodist Church and was a past master of Bay City Lodge 865 A. F. & A. M. He had been city tax assessor-collector since April 12, 1951. Survivors are his wife, Olga Grote Matchett; a daughter, Elizabeth, the wife of Dr. George M. Stevens of Houston; brother, Robert K. Mrs. Olga Grote Matchett, age 80, passed away at her home, 2512 Avenue H, over the weekend. Mrs. Matchett, a long-time resident of Bay City, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Missionary Society and Eastern Star, as well as other civic organizations.
Services will be held at 2:30 PM, Wednesday, March 17, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. G. Wayland Elmore officiating. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery. Friends may call until 1:30 PM at the Bay City Funeral Home.
Survivors are: daughter, Mrs. G. M. Stevens of Houston; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be W. R. Carradine, Abe Cornelson, John Woolsey, Gordon Richardson, Fred Walker, and George Yeager.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow for well-known Bay Citizen Mrs. Olga Grote Matchett, who passed away over the weekend.
Mrs. Matchett was the widow of the late Lewis Matchett, a former tax assessor and collector for the City of Bay City. He was also prominent in formulating the annual Rice Festival held in Bay City.
Active in many civic organizations, Mrs. Matchett prided herself in memberships with the Missionary Society and Eastern Star. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church.
A resident of Bay City for 55 years, Mrs. Matchett, who was 80 at the time of her death, was found dead from a cardiac arrest in her home at 2512 Avenue H Sunday evening. She was living alone.

Miller of Wadsworth; 3 daughters: Doris Layton & husband Johnny of Wadsworth, Karen Trobl & husband Jimmy of Bay City, and Laura Evans & husband Steve of Barksdale, TX; son: Joe Gates & wife Sandra of League City; step daughter: Kathy Cofrin & husband Albert of Houston; sister: Bernice Woodrow & husband Charles of Brazoria, brother: Stanley Genzer & wife Joyce of Markham; 9 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. Annie was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Roderick Gates and 5 siblings. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday, January 9, 2014 at the funeral home. Gene Paul Miller, 80, of Bay City passed away February 3, 2014. He was born September 2, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri, to John Eugene Miller and Blanche Roegner Miller. He served his county in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict where he taught electronics to NATO Students in Germany for 3 years. He was an I & E Forman for Mundy Co. at Celanese Plant for 11 years. He loved woodworking in his shop and was blessed with the ability to fix anything. Survivors include his mother Blanche Miller of Bay City; wife Katherine (Collins) Miller of Bay City; son Stewart N. Miller (Nena Duvall) of Seabrook, TX; daughters Karen D. LaBouve (Ray) of Nederland, TX and Barbara A. Blanchard (James) of Friendswood, TX; grandchildren Christopher N. Miller (Trisha), Tyler C. Miller, Cornelia A. Miller, Jesse S. Miller, Cody I. Bonnie Charlene Mills, 89, of Bay City, passed away August 9, 2013. She was born June 22, 1924 in Petrolia, Illinois to Charles and Ava Dunlap Smith. She was one of eight children. Bonnie married Lloyd C. Mills in 1941 and they had four sons. She was preceded in death by: her parents; four sisters, June, Maxine, Marge and Verna Mae; two brothers, Carson and Ray; one son, Donald Eugene (Gene) Mills; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Mills; and her best friend, Betty Gentry. Bonnie was a loving mother, who worked two jobs to raise her “boys,” who were her world. Kids who grew up in Petrolia still remember her wonderful lunches when she was the cook at the grade school there. She was life long member of Petrolia UMC and a wonderful sister, aunt and friend to many. She is survived by: three sons, Clifford Allen (Butch) Mills of Covington, IN, James Richard (Dick) Mills (Mari) of Silver Spring, MD and Michael D. (Mike) Mills (Kathy) of Bay City; one daughter-in-law, Penny Mills of Bridgeport; one sister, Mary Howe of Lawrenceville; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved as her own (including her “favorite son” Chuck Baldwin of Kingfisher, Okla.) and many “camping buddies” from East Fork Camp Ground in Olney. U. E. Moffett Mr. U. E. Moffett died at his home in this city this morning at 4 o’clock and will be buried in the Cedarvale Cemetery tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock with religious services at the home at 9 o’clock. His wife and nine children, six sons and three daughters, survive him. Descendent was born October 30, 1851, and was, therefore, 64 years, 9 months and 24 days of age. He moved with this family to Bay City from New Waverly, Texas, in 1912, and has made this his home since that time. Mr. Moffett was a splendid man, a loving father and husband, a consistent member of the Baptist Church and a devout man in every respect. Since coming to Bay City he has made a host of friends who are grieved over his death. The funeral services will be conducted at the residence in the morning at 9 o’clock by his pastor, Rev. Gilliam, pastor of the First Baptist Church.

Ramon Montalvo, 94, of Wadsworth passed away February 12, 2014. He was born February 27, 1919 in Bay City, TX, to the late Felipe and Eulalia Vasquez Montalvo. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. His wife, Maria Delores Montalvo; and son, Roy Montalvo preceded him in death. Interment will be at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Mr. Morehead died March 1 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange, Calif. He was born March 22, 1912 in Buckholts, Milam Co., Texas to the late William Henry and Ida Varina Lowe Morehead. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bay City, a member and past Master of Bay City Masonic Lodge No. 865 A. F. and A. M. and also past Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas. He was a former longtime resident of Bay City, and former resident of Bruni, Texas and has been living in Mission Viejo for the past 14 months. In 1997, he retired from Skelly Oil with some 35 years of service. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Payne of Mission Viejo; one granddaughter, Denise L. Payne of Corona, Calif.; and two great grandchildren, Ben and Dawn Payne of Corona. MURPHY, Vernon C., age 79, passed away December 15 in Wagner General Hospital, Palacios. A resident of the Palacios area since 1918, Mr. Murphy was a retired rice farmer. Services were held Thursday, December 16, at 2:00 p. m. in the Palacios Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leslie Webb officiating. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery, Blessing. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Pearl Murphy, sons John, Leonard, and Van, all of Blessing. Also, sisters, Mrs. Laura Erickson, Blessing; Mrs. Faye Taylor of Clemville and six grandchildren. Pallbearers were Tony Sliva, Elija Sliva, Raymond Laslie, L. B. Laslie, A. C. Harter, Raymond Svetlik and Ben Blackburn. Palacios Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ida Varina Morehead, 91, of Bay
City, died at Lake Jackson Nursing Home on June 15. She was a member
and past matron of the Bay City Chapter 380, Order of the Easter
Star, member of the Past Matrons and Patrons Club, active in her
church, member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class and the Women's
Society of Christian Service and a lifelong resident of Matagorda
County. Survivors include: daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Stewart of
Wharton; sons, Thomas "Tommy" Morehead of Richmond and William M.
"Billy" Morehead of Bruni; six grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the First United
Methodist Church on Thursday, June 19 at 2 p. m. with the Rev. S.
Merle Waters officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale
Cemetery. Arrangements made with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.
