Daily Tribune, June 22, 1987 Obituary courtesy of Faye Cunningham ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` A 22-year-old Bay City man’s swim in an area rice canal Saturday proved fatal, Matagorda County Sheriff’s deputies report. Deputies said Johnny Joseph Mainka, 2101 13th Street, drowned after he jumped into a rice irrigation canal located near Farm Road 3156, 2.1 miles east of north Texas 60. Mainka and two companions were sitting on the canal gates at around 4 pm when Mainka decided to jump into the canal to find out how deep the water was, a sheriff’s department spokeswoman said. Mainka reported ignored his companions’ pleas not to jump into the canal. Deputies said the two stated that Mainka disappeared in the swift current and resurfaced further down the canal about 10 minutes later. Mainka’s companions pulled his unconscious body from the canal and flagged down a passer-by, who began administering artificial respiration. Efforts to revive Mainka were unsuccessful and Justice of Peace Suzan Simons declared Mainka dead at 5 pm. Graveside services for Mainka will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Mainka is survived by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

Pansy Lorene Post Markert, 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026, of natural causes at [Hills Home] in Kerrville, Texas. Pansy was born in New Baden, Texas, and grew up in Bryan, where she attended school and made many fond memories. From an early age, her bright personality and ready smile drew people in. She had a laugh so joyful and contagious that when she laughed, everyone around her laughed too. Pansy worked for many years as a cashier at Oar’s Supermarket in Bryan, where she loved meeting new people and made friendships that lasted a lifetime. It was during these years that she met her first husband, Robert “Bob” Eastman. Together, they raised two wonderful sons, Robert Charles (“Bob”) and Donald Wayne (“Don”). Family and faith were the heart of Pansy’s life. She and Bob were lifelong Baptists and active members of their church in Beaumont, Texas. They taught Sunday school and led the church’s youth group, opening their home to countless young people who found warmth, laughter, and love within their walls. Later, Pansy found love again when she married Roland Markert in Bay City, Texas. With Roland came another loving family, and his daughters welcomed Pansy warmly. Together, Pansy and Roland discovered a shared passion for model trains. They spent many weekends traveling to model train conventions, meeting others who shared their hobby, and building a collection that brought them endless joy. Pansy was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Rae and Robert Jirden Post; her husbands, Robert Eastman and Roland Markert; her sons, Bob and Don; and her sisters, Elsie Post, Gladys Mae Morris, and Lilly Maudell Cocking. She leaves behind her loving daughter-in-law, Linda; grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many friends and extended family who will forever remember her warmth, her laughter, and her boundless love.
