Joseph D. Moore, Pioneer Resident, Dies Thursday
Beloved Old Timer Had Seen Bay City Grow From Infancy

Mr. Joseph Daniel Moore, 83 years, 2 months and 20 days, died at his home here at 2504 Ave. G, at 12:45 AM Thursday. His death, though following an illness of many months, came rather unexpectedly as he was sitting on the side of his bed talking to his wife and a few days before he had walked to town to see his friends.

“Cousin Dan”, as he was known by young and old, new friends and old friends, who were legion in the county and in this section, had lived in Bay City for 51 years. Although the gods of riches did not shine on him, the gods of friends brilliantly lighted his every day and his loving nature and unselfishness endeared him in the hearts of all. He loved his fellow man, he loved his fun and in turn he was loved and respected.

Mr. Moore was born in Indianola. He moved to Bay City from Elliott’s Ferry landing spot on the Colorado River, south of Bay City. He was the owner of the first store in Bay City and was the first postmaster in Bay City. He served as tax assessor of Matagorda County for six terms. At the time of his death he had just retired as deputy tax assessor-collector under Mr. S. O. Eidman of Matagorda County.

He is survived by: Mrs. Susie Moore; two daughters, Mrs. Joe Bruno and Miss Inez Moore; four sons, Arthur of Houston, Donald of Dickinson, Leo of Dallas, and Daniel of Laredo. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Bay City and also a member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church today at 2 o’clock, with Reverend Lawrence Greenhaw of the Palacios Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in charge.

Active pallbearers were S. R. Harrington, Raymond Cookenboo, Julian Inglehart, Frank Daehne, J. C. Lewis and Roland (Rowland) Regueley (Rugeley).
