Glenn J. McCarthy

June 13, 1949 – February 11, 2024

Glenn J. McCarthy “Mac”, 74, of Victoria, Texas passed away on February 11, 2024. He was born June 13, 1949, in Joliet, Illinois to the late Clarence and Dorothy (nee LaBarr) McCarthy.

Glenn loved to play the harmonica, as many around Victoria and his former home of Bay City, Texas know. He taught himself to play the instrument while driving to work and was very talented. Though he never learned to read music, Glenn could learn to play any song by ear. You Are My Sunshine was one of his favorites and he played it often, sometimes just to annoy Nora who came to hate the tune (his daughters and grandkids still love it, though). He loved to pull out his harmonica and play along with any band at any bar and was even in a band of his own for a while. Glenn loved fishing and having a beer (and having a beer while fishing) and spent lots of time at Matagorda Beach fishing (and enjoying that beer) with his brother, Kevin. When he wasn’t fishing or working, he enjoyed gardening, taking over half the yard at his former home in Bay City, with raised beds and chickens. Gardening wasn’t as much of a priority in recent years, but he continued to always have an interesting plant or two in containers in the yard. He was an early adopter of the home computer and enjoyed learning how to use them and put them to use with the Commodore 64 in the 1980s. Glenn was a chemist by education and, before a debilitating bout of meningitis in the early 2000s which led to an early retirement, he worked for Celanese in Bay City for 22 years.

In addition to his parents; Glenn was preceded in death by his older brothers, Donald and Joseph McCarthy.

He is survived by his wife, Nora of Victoria, Texas; children, Kate McCarthy (James Salisbury) of Austin, Texas, Chris Stefka (Jon) of Victoria, Texas, Maggie Pallanez (Gabriel) of Victoria, Texas; brother, Kevin McCarthy of Victoria, Texas; eight grandchildren; along with numerous other loving family members and friends.

Thoughts and memories may be shared online at www.gracefuneralhome.net

A funeral mass for Glenn will be held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Victoria, Texas on Thursday March 21, 2024, at 10 a.m.

In 1981, Cathy met Robert McCauley at the El Maton National Hall, and they quickly fell in love. During their younger years, their favorite times together involved country music and dancing. In 2015, she became “Nana” to her first grandson Bryson Absher, and later to Emma and Owen Absher. She held an unbreakable bond with them that was full of love and admiration.

Cathy found joy in the small things in life and was a timid, strong, and fun-loving woman with a contagious smile and laugh. She cherished her family time and enjoyed traveling, whether it was a quick trip to a new restaurant or a ride through the hill country on Robert’s motorcycle, she was always ready to get away for a good time.

Cathy will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She had a zest for life and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Anna Claradene McNett

December 31, 1938 - March 12, 2024

Anna Claradene McNett, 85, of Bay City passed away March 12, 2024.  She was born December 31, 1938 in Pike County, Illinois to the late Albert Williams and Blanche Hughes Williams.

Anna lived in Hull and Kinderhook most of her life and was known as De.  She loved mushrooming, fishing, blackberry picking, gardening and raising critters.  They had rabbits, ducks, geese and even a hog.  And later dogs, parrots and sugar gliders. Back in the CB days she was known as Hot Rod Mama.  Anna and her husband moved to Van Vleck Tx in 1983 and established CM Auto Glass, Inc. in 1987.  They had been married 63 years.  Her favorite flower was a rose.  Her husband sent her roses every year for their anniversary.   One rose for every year they had been married.  It was a site to see and not something you often forget.  She loved getting her hair and nails done.  She loved bright colors and fancy designs.  Teaching crafting and making quilts.  Loved going to the Casinos.  She was kind.  She was a mother to all and will be missed by so many.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Danny McNett.

Survivors include her husband Donald McNett; daughter Dawn Mudd and her husband Tom; sons Derrick McNett, Devin McNett and his wife Dana and Tristan McNett; sister Bonnie Smith and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and other kids who all referred to her as “Mom”.

Right now my mom is in a better place.  She is sitting catching up with her sisters, brothers and at the top her list, my brother Danny.   On 3-12-2024 she closed her eyes and called it a day.

My mom spent half her life living in Hull and Kinderhook area.  There she was known as De.   No matter where she was several called her mom.

Mom kept us busy fishing, blackberry picking, gardening and raising critters.  We had rabbits, ducks, geese and even a hog that the momma rolled over on. She had Uncle John come and get the pig.   It became too much of a pet to eat.  For years she would go to the farm and that pig would come to her.  We were involved in a once a year gathering of aunts and cousins to kill chickens.  Everyone had a job. But she was right, nothing is as good as fresh chickens and memories made that day. When it rained we headed to Hannibal there was usually a snapping turtle to be found.  She showed me the right way to catch one.  Thank you, mom.

Memories were made through the hundreds of quilts made.  Each with a stitch of love.  She taught me to drive.  I drive just like her.  Back in the CB days her handle was hot rod mama.

She coached girls summer softball.   Then years later coached me with my 3rd child Curtis.

My mom was quite the athletic when it came to mushrooming.  She could smell them & see them on the other side of a gully.   This is where her athletic skills came into play.  Before I could say “I’m gonna go over there” she had jumped the thing.  Too bad Tic Tok was not around she would have had a lot of followers.

Mom and Dad moved to Texas, again it was nothing to hear someone call her mom besides her children and now her grandkids friends were calling her gramma.

Moms family exploded.  The grand kids came along and then the great-grand kids.

She enjoyed going to the casinos. It was like mushrooming.  She knew which machine & again the athletic came out.  She could bounce right off the stools. She put the critters off to the side and now she was doing her nails on a routine basis.  She loved the colors and designs.  My mom changed the color of hair, not brunette or regular colors, it was pink and teal.  She was with the times and she wore it well.

Mom I hope you know how much you were loved and how you made life special for us all.

Thank you for teaching me how to be strong and to be independent.  And how to just survive.  I love you mom.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
