Nalona Harvey Neuszer

October 11, 1935 - June 2, 2023

Nalona Neuszer, age 87, of Blessing, Texas went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 2, 2023. Her deepest passion in life was studying and teaching the Bible in a deeper and more meaningful way. Her desire was for everyone she knew to know the Lord.

On October 11, 1935, Nalona was born to Freeman and Francis Harvey of Palacios, Texas. At the age of 17, on a blind date, she met a special Aggie, named Leo Neuszer. Soon after graduating from Palacios High School in 1954, Nalona and Leo married on June 12. They were together for almost 70 years.

Leo enlisted in the United States Air Force which took them out of state to live and start their family. After serving 3 years of active duty, Nalona and Leo moved back to Texas and settled in Markham. Their family grew; they had 4 daughters and 1 son.

Because of Nalona and Leo’s growing family, in the early 1970s, they built a home and moved to Bay City.  Nalona loved family. She loved family gatherings and was very skilled at organizing dinners and parties whether it was for her 83-year-old grandmother’s birthday or an Easter Egg Hunt for the little ones.

Also, in the early 70s, Nalona discovered her talent for making and creating ceramic pieces. She painted beautiful woodland animals, Smiley figurines with their large head and big, bright eyes and smile, and various Christmas scenes. One of Leo’s favorites was a big, gray Brahman bull. Nalona named it Matlock after the bull Leo had at the ranch. The whole Neuszer family was excited at Christmas when they saw the big boxes under the tree because they knew what the contents contained: her beautiful ceramics!

During her children’s early years, Nalona worked hard as a homemaker. After the kids got older, she worked outside the home in the medical field. Both Nalona and Leo retired in the late 1990s. At the turn of the century, they purchased an RV and did some traveling throughout the United States, but by far, her favorite vacation was abroad. For many, many years, Nalona dreamed of going to Israel. She wanted to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, see the things He saw and be baptized in the same river He was. In 2007, that dream came true. Nalona and Leo traveled to the Holy Land, took a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, were baptized in the Jordan River, walked on the Mount of Olives and went inside the empty tomb! They were also able to take a side trip to Petra, Jordan where she got to meet Queen Rania!

All throughout Nalona and Leo’s marriage, they were active in church. Nalona taught Sunday School, Bible School and Bible Studies. Her main focus in teaching was to tell about God’s unyielding love to the world and the gift of His son, Jesus Christ.

Friday morning around 3:00 a.m., Nalona entered through the gates of Heaven. We know there were many friends and loved ones waiting to greet her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Freeman and Frances Snider Harvey, her infant baby daughter, Connie Lynette Neuszer, a brother, Lonnie Harvey, sisters-in-law, Margie Ackerman, Rosemary Harvey, Dorette Harvey, and a brother-in-law, Bob Ackerman.

Nalona will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. She touched our lives in so many ways. She is survived by her loving husband, Leo P. Neuszer, Jr. of Blessing, Texas, daughter, Carol Neuszer of League City, Texas, daughter, Lori Ann Collins (James) of Bay City, Texas, daughter, Lisa Adams of Cypress, Texas, son, Phil Neuszer (Marsha Butler) of Bay City, Texas. Nalona had 5 grandchildren:  Greg Collins (Toi) of Friendswood, Texas, Kimberly Melendez (Matt) of Richmond, Texas, Cammile Brannan (Rad) of Cypress, Texas, Ashley Adams of Cypress, Texas and Mark Collins of Bay City, Texas. Her 6 great-grandchildren are: Jackson, Micah and Tessa Collins of Friendswood, Texas, Collins Melendez of Richmond, Texas, Harper and Baby Boy Brannan of Cypress, Texas who is due in October. Nalona also leaves behind 3 brothers and 2 sisters-in-law:  Gaylon Harvey (and friend, Connie Huitt) of Blessing, Texas, Larry Harvey of Alvin, Texas, Donnie Harvey (Mary Jo) of Ashby, Texas and Wanda Harvey Johnson (Al) of Palacios, Texas.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at the Palacios Funeral Home located at 701 1st Street. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. with the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. The graveside service and burial will follow at Hawley Cemetery.

Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will be: Greg Collins, Mark Collins, Matt Melendez, Rad Brannan, Tim Harvey, Toby Harvey, Tyson Harvey, Michael Harvey, David Harvey, Chris Harvey, Kevin Harvey, Dennis Wesselman and Michael Steffek.

The Neuszer family would like to extend a special thank you to Angels Hospice Care of Bay City, especially Cathy Dunn, June Moore, Terevea Bonner Williams, and Bertha Fields. Your knowledge, care and support for our whole family is greatly appreciated.

Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he praises her, saying:

“Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.”

Anthony Toan Nguyen

Funeral services for Tony Toan Nguyen, 51, of Sugar Land, Tx., were held July 30, 2011 at Saint Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land. Internment was at Forest Park at Westheimer and Dairy Ashford in Houston, Tx.

Mr. Nguyen was born on April 26, 1960 in Bien Hoa, Vietnam. He is the oldest son of Tu Van Nguyen and Ty Thi Nguyen.

Tony is the brother of Yen Bach Tran of Palacios, An Thanh Nguyen, Phuong Ngoc Nguyen and Chi Lan Nguyen of Houston. His parents are devout Catholics from Quan Phuong village, Hai Hau district, Nam Dinh, North Vietnam. They moved to the South in 1954 to escape the imminent Communist persecution.

After having resettled in the South, Mr. Nguyen’s parents rebuilt their lives at Da Minh parish, Tan Mai district, Bien Hoa Province. Mr. Nguyen has been a filial son. He had assisted his parents in running their business while being a student in middle school up to the day his family had to leave for the United States when the war ended in 1975.

In the U.S. Mr. Nguyen’s family lived in Atlantic, Iowa. Then on March of 1979, the family moved to Palacios, Texas. Mr. Nguyen continued his education and while attending high school he began to work part-time to assist his family. Afterward, Mr. Nguyen became an entrepreneur and began his business. He owned and operated the gulf shrimp boat, Princess V., for seven years. Mr. Nguyen ran his business, The Point, in Palacios for thirteen years until his illness. He married Kim Yen Vu of Biloxi, Mississippi in December 1984. Mrs. Vu is now the Principal of Stafford Primary School in Stafford, Tx. They have three children: two sons, Julian 22 and Jonathan 19 and an eleven years old daughter, Joanna. The Nguyens have lived in Sugar Land, TX since 2004.

On July 21, 2008, Mr. Nguyen’s father passed away in Palacios, TX, which has been a big loss for Mr. Nguyen and his family. Exactly three years later, on July 22, 2011 at 7:35 p.m., Mr. Nguyen left this world after having fought courageously against pancreatic cancer for two and a half months.

Upon receiving the news that Mr. Nguyen had cancer, not only were his wife, his children, his mother, and siblings stricken with a tremendous grief, but all of his friends and acquaintances were also shocked with sorrow. To them, Mr. Nguyen is an example of a virtuous man who lived his life according to the Catholic faith and strived to abide by the Eight Beatitudes. Indeed, Mr. Nguyen is a loving family man who loved and devoted himself totally to his wife and children, a filial son who respected and cared for his parents, a kind older brother who had taken care of his younger siblings while they were young, a faithful friend who always went out of the way to lend a hand when needed. To others, Mr. Nguyen is an example of the Creed: “God Is Love” throughout the charitable works that he had done since growing up.

After more than two months of fighting against the deadly cancer with complete faith in God, Mr. Nguyen has peacefully left this world to return to God’s side, leaving his family and friends with a deep grief of loss. However, during his final days, his firm belief in God’s will have been demonstrated as clearly as the Gospel posted near his side: “Yes, Father, for such has been Thy gracious will.” (Matthew 11:26)

Even though Mr. Nguyen had left this world, to all who knew him, Tony the man and his good heart will continue to stay with them as the French writer Émile Henriot once said, “I firmly believe that the dead continue to stay alive as long as there are people remembering them.” Yes, to all who know him, Mr. Nguyen still lives among them because his character and compassion will continue to remind them to be more compassionate, more spiritual, and better.

Mrs. Verona Nolte

Matagorda, Texas. March 16.—After a lingering illness of several months, due to the infirmities of old age, Mrs. Verona Nolte, widow of Mr. Frank Nolte, who died in 1875, passed away at her home, at 4 o’clock Sunday morning, March 11, 1923. The remains were laid to rest in the Matagorda cemetery at 5 p.m. of the same day. Rev. Father O’Reagan of Bay City conducting the funeral services. Lovely flowers were placed on the grave by sympathizing friends of the family.

Mrs. Nolte—nee Miss Verona Freeman—was born in Hanover, Germany, Dec. 14, 1834, and at the age of seventeen years embarked for America with a number of other immigrants, landing at Galveston, where at the age of twenty years she was married to Mr. Frank Nolte in the beautiful old cathedral of that place; then they moved to Matagorda where the family has resided ever since.

Of this union there were nine children of whom only three survive, Captain Frank Nolte of Corpus Christi, Mrs. J. J. Duffy and Mrs. O’Donnel of this place. There are nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren living, also two half-sisters. Mrs. Mary Talley of California and Mrs. Lorena Miller of Bay City; a brother, Herman Freeman of Rockport.

Mrs. Nolte has ever been a devout Christian of the Roman Catholic faith, a loyal and devoted wife and mother and a friend to all, even after growing feeble she was always cheerful, bearing her sufferings with that fortitude known only to those who love the Lord, and she will be greatly missed by her loved ones. Her faithful children did all they could to soothe her in her last months of illness, responding to her every wish, and she charged them not to grieve but rejoice that she would soon be ‘”at rest,” then she made the sign of the cross and quietly fell “asleep in Jesus.” Kind friends gently folded her hands and prepared the body for burial and now she is “resting, sweetly resting in a Savior’s love.
