Bay City, County Mourning Loss of Religious Leader in Paiz

Bay City and Matagorda County is mourning the loss of Pastor Franc Paiz, the pastor

of the Power Church in Bay City.

Paiz was the leader of the Power Church , w h i c h stepped to the forefront of the community’s battle with the COVID-19 outbreak by placing a blessing box in front of its church building for non-perishable food items and toiletries.

“A pastor friend of mine had a box in front of his church. I thought if there ever came a time, we could do something like that,” Paiz said back in May of 2020. “If there were ever time that we need something like this, it’s right now.”

Paiz was also instrumental in the formation of the House of Refuge in February of 2016, a homeless shelter in Bay City. The shelter houses 10 beds for men and 10 beds for women.

Paiz said that because the only other shelter in Bay City was the Women’s Crisis Center and only offered services to female victims of domestic violence, that left out a huge population of homeless individuals who seek shelter in the area.

Paiz’ death is being felt throughout the religious community of Bay City as well.

“To the family, friends, and congregation of Power Church, please accept our deepest condolences, you are all in our prayers,” said Morgan Wolfe of Harvest Time Worship in a Facebook posting.

“On behalf of the Turning Point Church Family, we would like to extend our sincere condolences and prayers to the family & church family of Pastor Franc Paiz. We will miss your acts of service and love to the community and your passion to reach the loss for the Kingdom of God,” said another Facebook post.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to offset funeral expenses for the family.

“I know that if this role were reversed Pastor Franc would already be working on helping my family with raising money because that’s just the kind of loving person he was. So, I decided to take the step and start this Go Fund Me page for him and he’s family. We All Loved him and so many people knew him. He ministered to many of us and changed our lives by Introducing Jesus to many of us. He demonstrated Gods love so clearly to us by welcoming everyone no matter their background. He cared about everyone’s future and not their circumstances,” stated the GoFundMe page.

William "Bill" Patrick Parkey

September 30, 1974 - November 17, 2022

In the early morning on November 17, 2022 William Patrick (Bill) Parkey of Matagorda, Texas passed from this earth at the all too early age of 48.

Bill was born to Gary and Patsy Parkey in Decatur, Alabama on September 30, 1974. They moved to Bay City, Texas in 1977 and his brother Joey was born on September 26, 1977 in Clear Lake. Bill graduated from Bay City High School in 1993 and from Texas A&M in 1997.

Bill worked for Frost Bank in Austin and Corpus Christi from 1997-1999. In 1999 he went to San Diego (Ocean Beach) to crash on his college friends' couch "for the summer". During that ”8-year long summer,” he worked at Ocean Beach Surf Shop, on the fishing boat Chubasco II, and as a real estate consultant performing due diligence reviews for commercial mortgage backed securities on the west coast.

He came back to Texas in 2007 and went to work as a Motor Operated Valve tester traveling to nuclear plant outages across the country. In 2014 he went to work as an Electrician at STP in Bay City.

In 2013 he reconnected with his childhood friend, Tammi Hanna, and they fell head over heels for each other. They were married in Bay City on March 14, 2015 and bought a home in Matagorda. Bill was welcomed into the Hanna and Ellis families and was blessed by their love and acceptance of him.

Bill and Tammi had 9-1/2 wonderful years together, 7-1/2 as a married couple, and they were never happier. They enjoyed traveling and hiking and hanging out/watching the sunset together in Matagorda. Bill's only regret was that he could never keep up with Tammi on a hike.

Bill loved the mountains and the beach and all board sports (skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding). He was intelligent, a hard worker, an avid reader with a heart for the underdog and the little guy. He tried to pretend that he didn't like Tammi's cats but everyone knew that wasn't true.

Bill was preceded in death by his brother Joey, his uncle Don Parkey, and his grandparents-in-law Bob and Jean Ellis. He is survived by his wife Tammi Kay, his parents Gary and Patsy, his mother and father-in-law Paul and Sheila Hanna, his brother-in-law Robert Hanna, numerous Parkey aunts, uncles, and cousins, and even more numerous Hanna and Ellis aunts, uncles, and cousins.

"Daddy I'm afraid. Won't you stay a little while?
I never thought I’d see the day I had to say goodbye
Daddy please don't go. I can't do this on my own
There's no way that I can walk this road alone
Well daddy grabbed my hand and said
Just cause I’m leavin
It don't mean that I won't be right by your side
When you need me
And you can't see me in the middle of the night
Just close your eyes and say a prayer
It's okay, girl, I ain't scared
I won't be here, but i'll always be right there
Even though I’m leavin, I ain't goin nowhere"

Jean Ann Piwonka

January 03, 1959 - September 18, 2022

Jean Ann “Mimi” Piwonka, daughter of the late JT Bubba Byrd and Katynel was born January 3, 1959 in Bay City, Texas.  She went home to be with the Lord on September 18th, 2022.  Jean was a loving wife, grandmother, and Hobby Lobby enthusiast.

It was on a blind date in College Station that Jean met her husband of 45 years, Darrell.  Jean and Darrell were married on August 5, 1977.  Together they made homes in Blessing, Atascocita, Huffman and Boling.

Jean will be remembered for her wonderful laughter, love for seasonal decorations, and a heart to serve others.  She loved working with the teams of Humble ISD and enjoyed her time in a variety of positions, one of her favorite assignments was working with the special needs children as a paraprofessional, where her talent to show care and compassion shined. Jean loved to dress up, make children’s books come to life, and there was never a bulletin board that she wasn’t excited to decorate.  School brought her many lifelong friends, some of her favorite being her “Golden Girls” and the “Thelma” to her Louise.

Being a mom to her children and a “Mimi” to her grandkids was Jean’s greatest joy!  There wasn’t a stocking that could hold the huge piles that Jean loved to personally create, a school project that she didn’t get excited to over craft, or an earlobe she didn’t tickle with excitement.  “Mimi” loved turning even a simple sandwich into a special memory for her grands.  She cherished each day together.

Retirement brought Jean and Darrell back to Matagorda County and the house with a pool that Jean had dreamed of.  Upon this move Jean began attending First Baptist Church where she became an active member of the Women’s Bible Study class and began teaching children’s bible study classes.  Jean’s smile grew even brighter as she deepened her faith and shared about her journey with others.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Wendy (Les) Walker of Humble, Kelly (Buster) Wolfe of Haslet, Justin (Jordan) Piwonka of Bay City; her most precious grandchildren: Konnor, Kailey, Karter, and Presley; brother John Daryl (Stella) Bryd, sister Nancy (Joey) Sliva, sister Sharon (Gary) Orsak; and a host of extended family whom she loved dearly.

The family will receive visitors from 1 PM to 2 PM Thursday, September 22, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Bay City.  The Funeral Service will follow at 2 PM at the First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating.  Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.
