Samuel Parker Dead

Samuel Parker died this morning at the home of his mother, Mrs. J. D. Parker, on East Sixth street after an illness of about three weeks, aged 27 years, 4 months and 9 days. The remains were interred in Cedarvale cemetery this afternoon after funeral service at the residence conducted by Rev. Kimbler.

Deceased came to Bay City from Bell county about two years ago. He was a nephew of Mrs. W. O. Boney, and was a …working, quiet and…man, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He had been engaged in rice farming during his residence here and work broke down his constitution, making him an easy prey to disease.

The Tribune extends condolence to the heart broken mother and other sorrowing relatives.

Lula Parrish
Mrs. Parrish Services Are Held Here Monday

Mrs. Lula Parrish, 3290 Avenue F, was found dead in her home about mid-morning Saturday after neighbors became suspicious something might be wrong when mail began to mount in the mailbox and she had not been seen for about a week or more.

Officers were first called Friday night and tried to locate a relative prior to entering the house. Saturday morning one was located by telephone and permission was received.

A group including Police Chief James R. McWhorter, Captain Barney Mason, Mayor R. C. Gusman, and Justice of the Peace D. B. Hinton entered the house and found Mrs. Parrish dead on the floor of her bedroom, ready for bed and the apparent victim of a stroke or heart attack.

Justice of the Peace Hinton returned a verdict of death from natural causes, probably a heart failure. He said Mrs. Parrish was apparently dead at least a week when the body was found.

Services for Mrs. Parrish were held at 11 a. m. Monday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, with Rev. Garnet House officiating. Interment was at Brookside Cemetery in Houston [Cedarvale Cemetery].

Mrs. Parrish, who lived alone in the house, had lived in Bay City a number of years.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Zada McCullum of Liberty, Miss Leona Watts of Dallas; five sons, Oscar Watts of Baytown, and Floyd, Edgar, Vernon and Ira.

In the mailbox of the house were letters, the oldest postmark being November 29, authorities reported. Police said a neighbor remembered seeing Mrs. Parrish about a week and a half ago.

When found, the body had lost about a pint of blood from hemorrhaging, it was reported.

The doors to the house were all locked on the inside, authorities reported and there were no bruises or any indication of foul play.

Bluford Patterson

Bluffard Patterson

On February 20, 1932, 3 o’clock p. m. our Heavenly Father called to his reward Bluffard Patterson of Matagorda, Texas.

He had not been well for some time and recently had been in the Gulf hospital but had returned home and everyone thought he was improving nicely when, without warning, he was taken to the life beyond.

Mr. Patterson was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Patterson, both deceased. He was born in Flatonia, Fayette County, Texas, Dec. 13, 1870.

On Dec. 30, 1896, Mr. Patterson and Miss Sarah Elizabeth Stenbing of Jedds, Texas, were united in matrimony at Gonzales, Texas in which vicinity they lived three years. To this union seven children were born, four of whom are living.

In 1894 Mr. Patterson joined the Baptist Church at Elm Grove, Fayette County, Texas, where he was a member until moving to Bartlett, Texas and later to Wadsworth, Texas, at which time he united with the Baptist Church there, and continued as a member of that church until his death.

As the death angel cast his shadow over the Patterson household on Saturday, Feb. 20, many loving hands ministered to the comfort of the family and throughout the days, numerous were the friends who came to offer their sympathy, and services, and to tell the wife and children what a ray of sunshine and happiness he had been in their lives and what grief his going had brought to them. What a wonderful thing it is and what a blessed satisfaction it must be when one nears the end of this trail we call life, to find oneself so beloved.

The funeral service was held at the Methodist Church in Matagorda, Texas, Feb. 22. Rev. L. R. Byrd, missionary pastor of the Gulf Cost Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. D. A. Mangham, pastor of the Matagorda Methodist Church, officiating. The scripture lesson was John 15: 1-6. Reverend Byrd spoke tenderly of the sorrow occasioned by death, but pointed all to the comfort of friendship, both human and divine; to the comfort of sympathy of hope, of faith, faith in God through Jesus Christ and hope of the resurrection from the dead. He closed his message with the following lines:

“God hath not promised skies of blue;
Flower strewn pathway always for you;
He hath not promised sun without rain,
But he hath promised strength from above.
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.”

Miss Margaret Pratt played the organ softly as the choir, consisting of Mrs. E. E. Pearce, Mrs. W. E. Milstead, Miss Cora Follis, Miss Jo Reed, Miss Lilly May Birdwell and Miss Mildred Landrum sang the following songs: “Blessed Assurance,’ “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” and “What A Friend.”

Many were the beautiful floral offerings sent by relatives and friends in expression of their sympathy and love, being carefully arranged by deft and loving hands over the grave of Mr. Patterson whose body lies softly sleeping in the Matagorda Cemetery.

The following are left to mourn his going: Mrs. B. Patterson, his wife one daughter, Miss Elva Ray of Matagorda, three sons, Fred of Freeport, Joe and B. J. of Matagorda, five brothers, William and Sam Patterson of Gonzales, Tom Patterson of Elfrida, Ariz., M. Patterson of Gulf, W. W. Patterson of Slaton, Texas, one half-brother, Rev. T. Y. Adams, San Antonio, Texas. Out of town relatives were: Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Stenbing, Gonzales; Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Stenbing, Yoakum; Mr. and Mrs. John Stenbing and family, Odem, Mr. and Mrs. Link Stenbing, Bay City; Mr. and Mrs. Oran Patterson, Wadsworth; Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Prather, Gulf; Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Daniels, Gulf; Mr. and Mrs. E. Herschap, Gulf; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Patterson, Gulf; M. Patterson and family, Gulf; Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Page and Mrs. Pearle Cartwright, Gulf; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Patterson, Gulf. Besides these hosts of friends from Wadsworth, Bay City and Gulf, attended the services.

Active pallbearers were J. J. Bellew, Mock Steck, N. C. Elliott, J. D. Deshotels, Amos Duffy, H. L. Smith, Sr., members of the school board, J. C. Marr, superintendent of Gulf-Matagorda schools and J. A. Boring, principal of Matagorda school.

Edith Sansel Persons

Edith Sansel, aged three years and three months, daughter of Prof. and Mrs. R. W. Persons, died at the home of her parents yesterday evening at 7:30 o’clock and was buried this afternoon at 3 o’clock in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Edith Sansel has been for sometime and the immediate cause of her death was infantile paralysis. All that a doting father and mother and physician skill could do was done for her, but it was all in vain and death claimed her.

The funeral today was impressive and solemn. Little girls immaculately dressed in white acted as pall bearers while a large number of sorrowing friends wended their way to the little grave to pay their last sad respects to the little one.

The Tribune joins the many friends of Prof. and Mrs. Persons in sympathy heartfelt and sincere.

Texana "Linda" Melinda Peter

August 13, 1927 - July 12, 2023

Texana Melinda Peter was born on Saturday, August 13, 1927 to Maurice and Helen Miller.  As a young girl she was raised on the family farm in Howe, Texas with her two sisters Bette and Margie.  At sixteen, she started attending Austin College in Sherman, Texas graduating at nineteen with a teaching degree. She initially wanted to be a flight stewardess which was a daring occupation for a lady in 1947 but was too young.   She found a job posting on a college bulletin board and hopped on a train for Wallis, Texas to start her teaching career.

In the little town of Wallis, Linda, as she was known by friends and family, quickly settled in as a 3rd grade teacher.  She met her future husband Jerry who had just returned home from the war and they married in 1948.   She quickly assimilated into her Czech family and community, and learned to speak Czech. Even into her last years, Linda fondly could still call the roll of Catholic Daughters by memory, pronouncing and spelling all the multi-consonant Czech surnames.    Linda & Jerry soon started their family with two daughters Mary & Helen and found the time for Linda to obtain her Master’s Degree in Education and English.

In 1958 the family of four moved to Van Vleck, Texas where a few years later she gave birth to their son Louis.   Linda started her long career at Van Vleck ISD teaching High School English, Speech, and Spanish.  Teaching her students gave her great joy and she devoted her energy to their success.  On many nights and weekends Linda could be found at the school directing the One Act Plays or driving students to weekend UIL Competitions.   She was at every football game supporting her students on the field and band. As a class sponsor she often was working late into the nights chaperoning many class dances and trips. Linda affectionately reminisced of her students by name, telling heartwarming stories of how each one personally excelled.

In 1977, the Van Vleck ISD Trustees had confidence in Linda’s abilities as Assistant Principal and promoted her to High School Principal.  Although common now, at that time it was unheard of for a woman to be a High School Principal.  Linda had the support of her fellow teachers and had the grit to stand her ground when challenged solely because of her gender.    Linda retired from Van Vleck ISD in 1986 after 38 years’ service teaching.  Not letting the dust settle, she promptly volunteered as a Hospital Volunteer “Pink Lady” at Matagorda General Hospital where she happily continued serving the community for many years.

Linda passed away on July 12, 2023. She believed in Jesus as her savior and in her very last days would name all the family and friends she looked forward to joining in Heaven.   Linda is preceded in death by her husband Jerry and her sisters Margie Baxter and Bette Watkins.

She is survived by her children Mary Cudd (Mike) of West Columbia, Helen Peter of Sugar Land, and Louis Peter (Debbie) of Cedar Lane.    She had four grand-daughters Mary Helene, Elizabeth, Katherine, and Rebecca along with eight great grand-daughters Marianne, Madeline, Lilly, Olivia, Whitney, Anna, Leah, and Miriam.  Linda loved all her family dearly and left a surprise note we just found thanking each by name for making her life a happy one.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, July 21, 2023 a rosary will be recited at 1:30 PM followed by Funeral Mass at 2:00 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Church located at 2001 Katy Avenue in Bay City. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Visitation for Linda’s friends and family will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 22, 2023 followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 AM at the Nichols Street Church of Christ located at 1200 Nichols Avenue in Bay City.

Per her written request, Honorary Pallbearers will be the students from classes she sponsored with special mention to the class of 1986, the last class of her teaching career.

In lieu of flowers, Linda requested donations be made to the Matagorda Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Volunteers (Pink Ladies) at MRMC, 104 7th St. Bay City, TX 77414 or to the Bay City Public Library, 1100 7th Street, Bay City, TX 77414.
