Bay City Tribune, October 10, 2021

Michael DeWayne Ray

Michael Ray, a friend and mentor to everyone he met, returned to his heavenly home on September 28, 2021 after complications from cardiac arrest and stroke. During his 54 years on this earth, Mike was full of life and had a personality that filled every room he walked into. He brought love, laughter and a big smile to all who knew him. He lifted and encouraged all those who came in contact with his optimistic, upbeat attitude. Mike’s life was filled with faith and he was sure he could accomplish anything he set his mind to.

Mike was born on March 1,1967 to Mae Joyce Widemon and Louis E. Ray in Bay City Texas. They taught him to work hard and to trust God. He was a busy, active boy who loved his family, God and playing sports. In high school Mike served as the student body president and excelled in football achieving state recognition for his talents and hard work as a linebacker.

One of Mike’s high school friends introduced him to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. What they taught him resonated deeply within his soul and he decided to be baptize a member in 1985 after graduating from Bay City High School. He received a scholarship to play football at McMurray University in Abilene Texas. A year later he chose to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Lisbon, Portugal (1986-88) where he shared his joy and hope in Christ. While there Mike learned to speak Portuguese and to love the people of Portugal. He was a powerful and influential missionary. After his mission Mike continued his education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and graduated with a BS in psychology in 1992. While at BYU he taught Portuguese for several years at the missionary training center helping other missionaries prepare to serve the Lord. He also taught Seminary in Spanish Fork, Utah. He loved his time at BYU and was always surrounded with friends.

After graduation he completed an internship for Pepsi Co. in Denver, CO and worked for OC Tanner Company in Salt Lake City, UT. Mike decided to continue his education and attended the Brigham Young University Law School. He married the love of his life, Lynette Liane Patterson on August 10, 1993 in the Provo, UT Temple. He began law school with determination and Lynette by his side. Mike Graduated with his Juris Doctorate in April 1996, passed the Utah Bar and became a successful international businessman. He loved helping others discover their dreams and accomplish their goals.

Mike accomplished much during his lifetime but he would count his family as his greatest joy. Mike and Lynette are parents to four children: Tenika Michele, Brianna Lyn, Michael Samuel, and Joelle Ashley. They also had the privilege of welcoming and raising Justice Fields as a daughter and mentoring Tarnue Ali in their home. Mike was always filled with optimism and positivity. He entered every phase of his life, every new business venture and every event with the determination that everything was going to be great. Mike endured many physical setbacks and health issues. In 2013 Mike had a stroke while vacationing with his wife and daughter in London, England. He lost the ability to speak and was paralyzed on the right side for the remainder of his life. Despite these difficulties he learned to ride a bike, a horse, to ski and snowshoe, and completed several races and distance challenges. He worked daily learning to speak again and shared hope with everyone he could.

Mike loved the gospel of Jesus Christ. He served in various capacities in the church throughout his life and loved to share his joy and hope in Christ. The last year of his life Mike again worked for the Seminary program as an aide helping students with disabilities. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife Lynette, to whom he was married for 28 years, his children, Tenika (Brandon) Jemmett, Brianna, Michael, and Joelle, 2 grandsons Emerson and Oliver Jemmett, his loving parents Louis and Joyce Ray of Bay City Texas and siblings Louis Ray, Vanessa Ray, Carolyn Stovall (Terry) and Mattie Ray-Peery (Jerome). He was preceded in death by his Grandparents Mary Louise Dykes, Elgin Sylvester Widemon, Louis L. Ray and Allie Mae Dobbins as well as his Uncle Harry Widemon.

Michael may not be with us, but he will never be forgotten. He leaves us with a desire to love deeply, forgive quickly, and trust in the Lord for guidance.

Julio L. “Polly” Reyes, Jr., 81, of Bay City passed away May 29, 2022.  He was born November 26, 1940 in Spurr, TX to the late Julio Reyes and Lucy Longoria Reyes.

For those who knew Polly, would know he learned many trades over the years. There wasn’t anything he could not do. He was a master carpenter, shade tree mechanic, concrete finisher and a jack of all trades   He would say that he always tried to learn everything anyone was willing to teach him so he could make sure that he would be able to provide for his family, and he made sure to pass these trades on to his sons. He even made sure all his daughters knew how to change a flat tire, change the oil, spark plugs, and check and fill all the fluids in their cars. He always passed his work knowledge onto his kids, grandkids, friends and anyone willing to learn.  He was a people person, and was well liked by everyone he met.   Julio never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, especially if they had their car hood up. He loved family gatherings:   drinking coffee,  playing dominoes, telling stories, making everyone laugh, fishing, mowing, living in the country, being outdoors and working on anything that had a motor on it.  He has left his children with his most accomplished job in life and that was building a foundation of love and respect and putting God first in everything.

Stewart Reynal

May 7, 1957 ~ October 25, 2020

Douglas Stewart Reynal, of Bryan, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on October 25, 2020. Stewart, as he was known by everyone, was born on May 7, 1957, to Edward W. Reynal, Jr. and Billie Jean Harris Reynal.

Stewart met the love of his life, Sherry Ann Cerny, in 1982 when he purchased an advertisement from her for the Miss National Teen-Ager Pageant, always saying that $100.00 ad was the best investment he ever made. The two married in 1984 and have truly been each other's best friend ever since. They had two sons, Jason and Shane. As an only child, Sherry's younger siblings became integral to his life too.

Stewart was a proud graduate of Texas A&M University, class of 1979, and earned his Bachelors of Science in Mechanized Agriculture. A member of the Corps of Cadets, his squadron was the Savage Six Flying Tigers. After graduating, he farmed soybeans and maize and later managed a grass farm before transitioning to Bay Equipment, a farming implement dealership, so that he could spend more time with his wife and newborn son Jason. He later became a plant operator at LyondellBassell (at the time, Oxy Chem) in 1992, from where he retired in 2019. Ever the true Aggie at heart, he and Sherry moved to Aggieland in 2018.
Stewart was a wonderful and dedicated husband and father who treasured the time with his family. He and Sherry were avid country western dancers, especially in their younger years. Although many times he was not the most successful fisherman when the day's catches were tallied, he loved fishing. He enjoyed spending time grilling in the backyard and woodworking in his tool shop, even getting Sherry to share his woodworking passion, where they built many yard and holiday decorations together. A favorite pass time was watching Aggie Football; a least favorite pass time was watching the Aggies lose a football game. During Shane's earlier baseball years, and probably past the point he should have, Stewart played catcher while Shane practiced pitching, earning many bruises as a result over the years. His sons marveled how every family dog seemed to love Stewart best. He was a man of few words but you always knew to listen when he had something to say. His dry sense of humor and adeptness at weaving together a good story often left his family laughing until they cried. He taught his sons a strong work ethic, often repeating the phrase "work hard now, so you can afford to play later." One of the happiest days of his life was when his son Shane married Sarah, and Sherry and he gained a daughter.

Stewart was preceded in death by his father, Edward, and father-in-law, Edwin Cerny. He leaves behind Sherry, his beloved wife of nearly 36 years, his sons Jason and Shane, daughter-in-law Sarah, and his mother. He is also survived by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Judy and Dave Falb of Montgomery, Jeffrey and Molly Cerny of Kingwood, and Melanie Bradley and Israel DeLaRosa of Bay City, his cousin Tom Reynal of Katy, and his nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Pallbearers are Jeffrey Cerny, Israel DeLaRosa, Dave Falb, Fred Law, Tom Reynal, and Gregg Sutherland. A private service and burial will take place in Bryan/College Station on October 29, 2020. He will be laid to rest in the Aggie Field of Honor, overlooking Kyle Field.

Robert Campbell Reynolds

Robert Campbell Reynolds died on July 25, 2022 at Detar Hospital, in Victoria TX. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, 76 years ago. His wish was to become a body donor and University of Texas Houston, UT Health, McGovern Medical School has him now. His final ashes will be spread at sea as he also wished.

He joined the US Navy along with his brothers and served as a sonarman. Upon leaving the service he went to The University of Alabama in Birmingham to become (quote from Robert) a ‘professional student’. He found his joy in Geology and Biology. He spent many summers in college sponsored geology field trips and various archaeological digs. He also had a passion for scuba diving, hiking and caving. He worked in the microbiology research lab at the college for many of those years and found he liked the work, which was also a paying job. He finally earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. A year later, he found himself working at Harris County Medical Examiner’s office as a ‘lab rat’ chemist, though he worked his way to becoming Toxicological Chemist. He also worked collecting Trace Evidence at the crime scene and in the morgue. When he retired, he was Senior Toxicological Chemist and Safety Officer.

Robert met his wife Robin during a weekly game of Dungeons and Dragons. They dated shortly after recognizing their compatibility and married shortly after that. He happily took on the role of father to Ian, Robin’s son, and adopted him as his own son. Camping trips, Boy Scouts advancing Ian to Eagle Scout, skateboard ramp building were some of their projects. When his granddaughter Hayley was born and in need of a stable home, Robert and Robin welcomed her. She remained with them until she graduated from Palacios High School. After retirement Robert, his wife Robin and Hayley moved to Palacios to be closer to Robin’s parents. He became active in the First Presbyterian Church, the City by the Sea Museum, the Library, and Recycling Center. He also discovered a passion for the wonderful sunrises and sunsets over the Bay and began taking photos of them. The seagulls also took a liking to him when he started sharing his day-old bread. His black cowboy hat, denim vest, suspenders, and crocs (with socks) were his trademark look.

He is survived by wife Robin Reynolds, son Ian Reynolds and granddaughter Hayley Reynolds, brother Dan Reynolds, Sister-in-law Julia Reynolds and nieces Ingrid and Gretchen and several grandnieces and grandnephews. He is predeceased by his mother Margaret and father Franklin Reynolds, brothers Frank and Don and sister Ann. A Celebration of life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Palacios on Thursday August 11 at 1:30 pm. Donations in lieu of flowers to Palacios Library or City by the Sea Museum.

Carl Wayne Rhymes

August 31, 1939 - August 17, 2022

Sadly, Carl Wayne “Jug” Rhymes of Bay City passed away at the age of 82 on August 17, 2022.  He was a passionate lover of life with a boundless sense of humor and a devilish grin.  He was a friend to all and loved by all who had the good fortune to know him.  He was a character, a cutup, and a charmer in only the most positive meaning of those words.

Among his many loves were: owning and showing hot rods (mostly pickup trucks), spending time swapping stories with his coffee group buddies, and making people laugh.  A consummate joke-teller, Jug could make even the most average quip a knee-slapper.  But clearly, his greatest love was spending time with his wife, partner, and soulmate Virginia and their beloved dog Missy.

Jug was unquestionably one of a kind.  He will never be replaced and always missed.  But on August 17, the heavens grew a little brighter.  Next time you hear thunder, consider whether it is a precursor to rain, or simply that Jug has the angels laughing again.

He was born August 31, 1939 in Welch, Louisiana to the late George Washington Rhymes and Edna Hebert Rhymes.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Stefanie Fay Rhymes and his twin brother George Edward Rhymes.  Survivors include his wife Virginia Jo Wells Rhymes; sisters Shirley Rand (Joe Max), Gerry Kirkland and Kay Rhymes and numerous other family members.

The celebration of Carl’s life will begin with visitation at 9:00 am Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bay City.  Funeral service will be at 10:00 am with Rev. Charly Shurtz officiating.  Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Mark Merck, Russell Merck, Galen Merck, Butch Rhymes, Greg Hood and Brian Abney.  The members of Jug’s cherished coffee group are Honorary Pallbearers.

Safely Home

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shad?
Oh! but Jesus’ love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.

And He came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus’ arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth’s shadows,
Pray to rust our Father’s Will.

There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth -
You shall rest in Jesus’ land.

When that work is all complete,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

Juan Jose "Johnny" Rodriguez

August 24, 1958 - April 07, 2022

Juan Jose “Johnny” Rodriguez, age 63, sadly ended his journey on Thursday, April 7, 2022 after a short battle with cancer

Johnny was born on August 24, 1958, in Raymondville, TX, to Santana B. Rodriguez and Valeria R. Chavez. As a young child, Bay City became his home where he later married the love of his life of 33 years, Delia, and together they went on to have two amazing daughters. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Throughout Johnny’s life he spent quite some time traveling for work as a safety technician. He took immense pride in being able to see different states, then return home to share those memories with his family. The time he spent at home, his favorite routine was to sit out on the porch, smoke his cigarettes, drink his coffee, and just soak up being outside. He also enjoyed taking trips down to the beach, spending time with his grandchildren, and simply watching ESPN, old western movies, or anything action related. He was a very loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees, so when baseball and football season would come around, you could not get his eyes off the T.V. His sarcasm and sense of humor stood out amongst most things, and there was never a time you would not laugh around him. Because of his amusing spirit, he inherited many nicknames, which most people would know him as. That includes the infamous Dawg, Sleep at the Wheel, and even Johnny Lightning. Beyond his goofiness, he had a heart of gold who loved everyone so fiercely without judgment. He is now living pain-free in paradise reunited with some of his loved ones.

Johnny is preceded in death by his parents Santana and Valeria. He is survived by his wife Delia; his daughters, Samantha (Antoine), and Sierra; his grandchildren Darius, Grayson, and Layla; his siblings Paula Martinez, Nelma Brooks, Rosa Rodriguez, Martha Grayson, Isabel Huerta, Santana Rodriguez Jr., Maryjane Garcia, Maria Angelica “Angie” Rodriguez, and Lucilla “Luci” Garza, as well as many other loved ones.

The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Angels Care Home Health for their loving care and support throughout his time on hospice.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, May 2,2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Nichols Street Church of Christ in Bay City, Texas, located at 1200 Nichols Ave., Bay City, TX 77414.

Johnny Carl Ryman, Jr.

June 26, 1931 - December 10, 2021

Johnny Carl Ryman, Jr., 90, left his earthly home and went to finally rejoin the love of his life, Valerie in Heaven on Friday, December 10, 2021.

Born June 26, 1931 in Wadsworth, TX to John Carl Ryman, Sr. and Emily Alicee Davis Ryman, Johnny could often be found running outside barefoot to his mother’s dismay.  In 1949 he began dating his soon-to-be wife, Jannie Valerie Crow.  Johnny and Valerie were married in 1952 and spent a joyous 60 years together.

In 1952 Johnny was called upon to serve his country in the United States Navy.  He proudly served aboard the U.S.S. Tombigbee seeing the sights of the Pacific until his discharge in 1956.

He worked tirelessly for his family and carried on a family tradition of working for the Texas Department of Transportation, like his father before him.  A tradition that his son also continued.  Between all 3 Ryman men, they have given TxDOT a combined 96 years of service as loyal employees.

After retirement Johnny and his wife Valerie ventured into business and owned Bay City’s own, Petal Peddler Flower Shop from the late 1980’s to the early 2000’s.

While Johnny valued his family and hard work, what was most important to him was his relationship with Jesus Christ.  When asked what the most important lessons were that he had learned in life he said, “Obey God, read your Bible daily, obey your parents, always tell the truth and treat others as you would like to be treated.”  Johnny was a faithful member of the Bay City First Baptist Church and treasured his visits with Bro. Mike Zimmerman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mary Louise Schooler, Virginia Ellen and Barbara Elaine; wife Jannie Valerie Crow Ryman and daughter Carla Jane Ryman Cox.

He is survived by his son Martin Duane Ryman and wife Karen; son-in-law Lee Cox; sister-in-law Sue Crow; four grandchildren Jarred Saizan, Jane Ellen Saizan Miller and husband Clint, Jeremy Ryman and wife Aleia, Colleen Ryman Henderson and husband Gerald as well as 8 great grandchildren and two nieces Karen Crow Meier and Kim Crow Riley.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Thursday, December 16, 2021 at the First Baptist Church.  Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating.  Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Matagorda Nursing & Rehab Center as well as the staff of Houston Hospice for the care and concern shown to Johnny.

Five generations of the Ryman family are characterized by deep roots in Matagorda County, having six generations descended from early Texas colonists, Peter Jacob Reiman with his wife Maria Catharina and children, who emigrated from Germany in 1845. Their son, Bill Ryman’s great-grandfather, joined the Fisher-Miller Colony which was part of an early colonization effort of the Republic of Texas; their story chronicled in A New Land Beckoned: German Immigration to Texas, 1844-1847.

For many years, Mr. Ryman worked as a Sr. Draftsman for Cameron Iron Works in Houston. He also was an excellent machinist and welder who created a large and very beautiful gate to his property honoring the 11th Airborne. He was a skilled carpenter who could master any craft imagined. In the mid-1950s, he built a 26-foot cabin cruiser out of marine plywood. He was an excellent shot and enjoyed traveling to various states to go on hunting excursions with his brothers, J.C. (James Calvin) and Johnny (John Douglas). Mr. Ryman obtained his pilot license in the late 1960s, flying light aircrafts including a Piper PA-12 and a Cessna 170. Later in life, he took up acrylic painting and did a portrait of his personal hero, Audie Murphy.

He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Mae Ryman, granddaughter Chelsea (Robert) King, and 3 great-grandchildren – Lainey Mae, Dane Ryman, and Brynlee Kate. Survivors also include three stepchildren from his first marriage to Helen Virginia Hutton Brooks who passed away in 2010. His second marriage was to Jane Greer Glazener who passed away in 2015.
