Geo. James Rainey III

George James Rainey III passed away Nov 28th after an illness of a very short duration.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Rainey, one sister Beulah Ann Rainey and one brother Herbert Frank Rainey of Van Vleck, Texas.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p. m. from the Van Vleck church with Rev. Rollo Rilling pastor of the First Christian Church of Bay City officiating. Burial was in the private Rainey Cemetery in Van Vleck, Texas. Taylor Bros. were in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Curtis Shelbert Reed, Sr.
 

Curtis Shelbert Reed, Sr., 91, passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2004.

He was born January 12, 1913 in Goldman Hill, near Waco, Texas, to the late James and Molly Reed.

He was a lifelong resident of Van Vleck and a Baptist.

Curtis was a retired truck driver. He was a member of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corp., which established state and national parks.

During his years of retirement, friends and family recall his avid domino games, fishing stories and his passionate political views.

Mr. Reed is survived by: his wife, Emaline Rose Reed of Van Vleck; daughter, Wanda Laird of Mathis, Texas; grandson, Clay Laird of Corpus Christi; great-granddaughter, Madison Laird of Columbus, Texas; three step great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Curtis Shelbert Reed, Jr.; grandchildren, Curtis Wayne Laird and infant Cindy LaNell Laird; sister, Edith Rogers; and brother, Robert Reed.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, December 26, 2004 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Russell Davis officiating.

Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Van Vleck Building Fund or the charity of your choice.

Molly Suggs Reed

Mollie Reed

Funeral services for Van Vleck resident Mrs. Mollie Reed, 93, were held at 3:30 pm Tuesday at Van Vleck Baptist Church.  Mrs. Reed expired Monday afternoon in Matagorda General Hospital and had been a resident here for 31 years.

Rev. David Elliott officiated at the rites, and buried in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck under the direction of Taylor Brothers.

Surviving are two sons, Robert L. Reed, and Curtis S. Reed of Van Vleck; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Richard Reed

June 27, 1924 – March 30, 2014

Funeral services for Mr. Richard Reed, 89, of Clayton, Texas will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Carthage, Texas, with Bro. Mike Wilson and Dr. Dale Reed officiating.

Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Clayton Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home.

Family visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday night at Hawthorn Funeral Home.

Mr. Reed died March 30, 2014 in Carthage, Texas.

Mr. Richard Gray Reed was born June 27, 1924 in Clayton, Texas. He was the middle child of three, born to the marriage of Robert Wilson and Katie Mae Gray Reed. He was raised and schooled in Clayton and graduated from Carthage High School. He served his country through the U.S. Army in Japan at the end of WWII.

Richard married Marcylle Boren, March 31, 1950, and together they celebrated 52 years of marriage, before she preceded him in death in 2002. Mr. Reed retired from United Gas as a field supervisor, but spent his lifetime as a rancher in Clayton. He was a longtime member of the Clayton First Baptist Church. He is also preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Robbie Lynn Marshall and Sarah Harris.

Mr. Reed is survived by his children, Jim Huff and wife Harriet of Snap Community, Robert Reed and wife Debbie of Bay City, Richard Reed and wife Terri of Clayton, David Reed and wife Cathy of Longview and a daughter, Susan Robinson and husband Jackie of Carthage; 16 grandchildren, Gina Daughtry, Bill Huff and wife Jessica, Paul Robinson and wife Dena, Katy Becker and husband Shawn, Heather Doty and husband Bart, Cory Robinson and wife Ling, Robby Reed and wife Stephanie, Rick Reed and wife Casey, Randi Walker and husband Marshall, Dan Reed and wife Ragen, Allen Reed and wife Laura, Rachel Davis and husband Jason, Derek Reed and wife Casey, Amy Sikes and husband Matt, Allison Reed and Ashton Reed; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Austin, Collin and Tucker Daughtry, Baylee, Kennedy, Cooper and Hadley Huff, Jackson, Garrison and Audrey Becker, Drake Doty and Kaidn Robinson, Robert, III and Ruger Reed, Westen, Finley, Hattie and Chloe Walker, Ryland and Rhett Reed, Adyson and Brock Davis, Harper Reed, Chris, Lindie and Jaden Sikes; numerous nieces, nephew, and a host of friends. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters.

Marcus Gilbert Reeves

Graveside Services for Marcus Gilbert Reeves, 63, of Sweeny, will be held at 6 pm Wednesday at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, with B. J. Sparks officiating.

Mr. Reeves was born Oct. 20, 1921, to Perry James and Maggie O’Bannon Reeves in Hasema, Brazoria County, Texas and died Aug. 5, 1985, at his residence.

Except for the five years he served with the U. S. Air Force during WWII, he resided in Brazoria and Matagorda counties all his life.  He enlisted in the Air Force Aug. 3, 1940, and was discharged Nov. 3, 1845, with the rank of corporal.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Reeves; a son and daughter-in-law, James Rodney “Jim” and Debbie Reeves; a brother, James T. Reeves of Bay City; a sister, Lurline Pool of West Columbia; and two grandchildren. 

Honorary pallbearers include Garland Richardson, Jerry Reeves, Earnest Sewell, Mike Rayburn, Frank Richardson, and Joice Richardson.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Chad Renfroe
March 19, 1978 – June 8, 2014

Funeral services for Chad Renfroe, of New Braunfels, Texas were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Mother Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Murray Martin, pastor, and the Rev. H. L. Hawkins, Jr. officiating. 

Viewing was held Monday, June 16, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Green’s Mortuary. 

Burial followed immediately after service at Midfield Cemetery.

Chad went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 8, 2014. 

He was born in El Campo, Texas on March 19, 1978.  He was employed by Rooms to Go Furniture in San Antonio, Texas. 

Chad was preceded in death by his father, Ruben Ortiz, Sr. 

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Betty and Carl Melton; his brothers, David Ortiz, Juan Manuel Ortiz, Ruben Ortiz, and Justin Kovar;  sisters, Margot McCullough, Daisy Ortiz, Crystal Renfroe and Chelsie Kovar; children, Dominique Grant, Alyzebeth Horne Renfroe, Kaitlyn Chavarria, Devin Melton and Kenneth Melton; grandchild, Nathaniel Renfroe; step-children, Destiny Johnson, Andrew Johnson and Faith Johnson; along with many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts.

Madelyn Marie Ressman
June 6, 1960 - March 26, 2014

Madelyn Marie Ressman, 53, of Bay City passed away March 26, 2014. She was born June 6, 1960 in Jourdanton, TX to Johnnie Ressman of Inez and the late Leona Bortel Ressman. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles since 1993 and past State President in 2009.

Madelyn is survived by her husband, Joseph P. McCurley; father, Johnnie Ressman of Inez; sister, Peggy Provenzano of Bellaire, TX; and her brother, Gerald Ressman of Inez.

In addition to her mother, Madelyn was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph “Jody” Ressman.

A time of visitation will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary to begin at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Inez. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Monday, March 31, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Gabriel Bentil officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Hubert C. Richardson

Funeral services for Hubert C. Richardson, 83, of Van Vleck, are scheduled for 10 a. m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 1994 at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jim Hardaway officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Mr. Richardson was born July 16, 1911, in Lincoln, Okla., to Henry and Laura Belle Rogers Richardson and died Aug. 3, 1994, at the Sweeny House Nursing Home.

A longtime resident of Van Vleck, a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Army and a member of the V. F. W. Post #2438 in Bay City.

Survivors include a son, Paul Richardson and his wife, Sheri, of Van Vleck; a step-daughter, Betty Brooks of Van Vleck and a step-son, Edward Dannelley of Van Vleck; a sister, Geneva Owen of Bakersfield, Calif.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Marie Richardson on May 12, 1976.

Pallbearers are Lamar Evans, Fred Walker, Wayne and Ricky Brooks and Neil and Brandon Richardson.

Anthony Phillip Rivas, 63, of Bay City, TX was called home to be with the Lord on March 13, 2014. He was born October 1, 1950 in Nacogdoches, TX to the late Luis Salviejo Rivas and Augusta Triana Rivas.

An intensely dedicated, driven, and passionate father, grandfather, friend, and servant of the Lord. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Triana & Louis Salviejo. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Janice Marie Rivas of Bay City, TX; daughter Mary Christine Mattlage & husband David Gregory of Austin, TX; son LCDR Andrew Phillip Rivas & wife Dee Anne of Chesepeake, VA; sisters Mary Christine Kieny and Dolores Jane Potts both of Tyler, TX; brothers Leon Rivas of Arlington, TX and Marcelino Rivas of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren Mallari Christine Mattlage, Meredith Camille Mattlage, Peyton Dee Rivas and Cooper Phillip Rivas.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Bay City, TX. Funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Sunset Cemetery in Nacogdoches, TX.

VAN VLECK - Juanita T. Rodriguez, 76, of Van Vleck, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003.

She was born June 24, 1926, in Cameron County, to the late Indalcio and Rosa Garza Trevino.

Survivors: husband, Juan Rodriguez; daughters, Isidra Grando of Damon and Marcella R. Gabino of Houston; son, Juan Antonio Rodriguez of Sugar Valley; sister, Rosita T. Rodriguez of Wharton; brother, Samuel Trevino of Van Vleck; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, the Rev. Gerry Cernoch officiating.

Funeral services for Scott Wayne Roemer, 41, were held on Feb. 28, 2014 followed by graveside services at Carmen-Nelson Bostick Cemetery.

Scott was born September 26, 1972 in Houston and passed on to heaven on February 24, 2014.

He graduated from Cypress Fairbanks Senior High School. He recently celebrated his 10th anniversary with National Oilwell Varco as an Inside Sales Representative. Scott took great pride in his job and was looking forward to upcoming changes with his position.

Scott is survived by his beloved parents, B.J. and Rosie Roemer of Houston; brother, Eric Roemer and wife, Leigh Ann of Palacios; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and countless other family members.

Scott found the Lord early in life and held steadfast to his faith. He was always there to greet you with a warm smile and offer an encouraging word to all. Scott loved all sports, especially playing darts. He was part of the National Houston Dart League and played on the ‘Shut Up and Throw Down’ team. Scott cherished most in life his family and friends. He was always there to lend a hand when anyone needed him. Whether it was helping his dad around the house, spending time with his mom or giving a friend a

ride; Scott was a true gentleman through and through. He will be missed for his amazing friendship, positive spirit, loving heart and loyalty to all those he held dearest.

Psalm 48:14 – For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death.

Funeral services for Lois S. Rogers, 71, of Bay City, will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 13, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

 

Mrs. Rogers died August 11, 1999, at Seabreeze Healthcare Center in Bay City. She was born August 9, 1928, in San Augustine County, Texas to Limuel Herse and Cora Roebuck Sowell. She was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, a resident of Bay City since 1941 and a former Senior Vice President of First National Bank, retiring in 1985 after 38 years of service.

 

She was preceded in death by: her father, Limuel Herse Sowell. She is survived by her mother, Cora Sowell of Bay City; two sisters, Susie Adkins of Bay City and Nevada Mutchler of Inez, Texas; brother, Preston H. Sowell of Garland, Texas; special niece, Brenda Adkins Sims and husband of Houston; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Delores Zernicek of Bay City.

 

Pallbearers will be Joe Cannon, M. D., Roy W. Sanders, Donald E. Adkins, Robert Toney, Freddie Williams, and Frank Spurney. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Louise Cowart Rush
(May 24, 1924 - March 20, 2014)

Louise Cowart Rush, 89, passed away March 20, 2014 in Bay City, Texas. She was born May 24, 1924 in Corpus Christi, Texas to the late Edem and Anna Louise Cowart.

Louise is survived by her daughters Laura McKissick and husband Kenneth and Lisa Rush; sons Eugene Thomas Rush III and wife Frances and Carl William Rush and wife Gale all of Markham, Texas. Grandchildren Eugene Rush IV, Michael Rush, Mark Rush, Tracy Rush, Louis Rush, Steven Rush, Kenny McKissick, Bridgette Dannels, Kevin McKissick, Dean Rush, Wade Rush, D.J. Brown, Leslie Brown, Dustin Brown, Logan Brown. She had 32 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 24 from 5-7pm at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00am Tuesday, March 25 at the 1st Baptist Church in Markham with Rev. Wade Rush and Rev. Louis Rush officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery. Pallbearers are Dustin Brown, D. J. Ralph Edward Ruth

Local resident and businessman Ralph Edward Ruth died suddenly Tuesday, May 8, while in Chicago, Illinois on business.

Ralph Ruth and his family moved to Bay City seven years ago from Houston.  Upon their arrival, Ruth became the owner and manager of the downtown Western Auto store which he maintained until the time of his death.  He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, the Rotary Club, a Shriner, and a member of the Order of Eagles.

Ruth is survived by his wife and two sons.

Arthur David Ryman

Services will be held for Arthur David Ryman, 86, of Sexton Road, 3 p.m. Friday at Wadsworth Baptist Church.

Officiating at the services will be the Rev. R. P. Odom.

Ryman died January 26, 1983 at his residence.

Survivors include wife, Mary Eunice Ryman of Bay City; daughters, Mary Ruth Spickler of Flint, Michigan, Lavern Lamb of Houston; son, A. J. Ryman of Bay City; sisters, Rosie Hatchett of Wadsworth, Grace Sifford of Anaheim, Calif., brothers, Ernest Ryman of Zapata; 3 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren.

Ryman was a member of the Wadsworth Baptist Church.

Burial will follow services at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers include Elmer Ryman, Harold Ray Ryman, Robert Ryman, Ira Ryman, Bruce Verdecanna and Willie Ryman. Honorary pallbearers include Lawrence Polensky, Roy Ryman, Jr., John Armatta, Clyde Ryman, Thomas Petrucha and Doug Cain [Kain].

Car Strikes Parked Motorists
Two Killed In Three-Vehicle Accident

Two men were killed early Thursday morning when their parked vehicles were struck from behind by a car on FM 521, approximately 11 miles south of Bay City.

Pronounced dead at the scene was 19-year-old Roy Mark Maden of Matagorda.

The other victim, 20-year-old Kenneth Ray Ryman of Wadsworth, died less than three hours later at Matagorda General Hospital.

According to the DPS report, Maden’s motorcycle had been parked parallel to Ryman’s pickup truck, partially on the roadway, when they were hit from behind by a car. All three vehicles were facing east at the time of collision.

A DPS spokesman speculated that Maden had pulled alongside the truck and was talking to Ryman when the accident took place. Damage to both of their vehicles was described as total.

The driver of the car, 50-year-old Ralph Durham of Bay City, was arrested on a charge of involuntary manslaughter for driving while intoxicated.

Durham was treated at Matagorda General for minor injuries and released to authorities. He was still being held through Thursday morning at Matagorda County Jail.

The accident was said to have occurred around 12:40 a. m. Thursday.

Funeral services for Ryman are scheduled for 2:30 p. m. Friday at the Church of Christ in Bay City. No information was immediately available regarding Maden.

Kenneth Ray Ryman

Kenneth Ray Ryman, 20, of Wadsworth, TX, died this morning in Matagorda General Hospital. He was the co-owner of Twiggs and Springs Nursery.  He is survived by wife, Cheryl Ryman of Wadsworth; parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ryman of Wadsworth; son, Kenneth Ray Ryman, Jr. of Wadsworth; grandparents, Mr. Clyde Ryman of Wadsworth and Mrs. Folmar of Wadsworth; brother Doug Ryman of Bay City; sisters Mrs. Sharron Van Dyke and Miss Lisa Ryman of Wadsworth.  Services will be held August 1, at 2:30 pm at the Church of Christ, Bay City.  Mr. Allen Brown of El Campo Church of Christ will be officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.  Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins of the Bay City Funeral Home.

Pearl Schulte Ryman

Pearl Schulte Ryman, 87, of Bay City passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at the Legacy Nursing Center in Bay City.

Pearl was born in Port O’Conner on April 3,1916 to parents Victor and Annie Herreth Schulte.

She was a long-time member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City where she served on the Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lloyd Ryman Sr. a brother, Arthur Lee Schulte and by her sisters, Jessie Mae Williams and Alma Bump.

She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Davis and a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd Edward Jr. and Linda Ryman.

She is also survived by grandchildren, Kristie and Glen Walker and Angela Smith and great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Caitlyn, Jonathan, Taylor, Zachary, Savannah and Shyann.

A rosary was said at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the Bay City Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Casey Jarzombek officiating.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Pallbearers were Ed Petering, Thomas Piwonka, Guadalupe Rodriguez, Ray Kacal, James Smith and Robert Dziuk.

Services were under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home.

Mary E. Ryman

Mary Eunice Ryman

Services will be held for Mrs. Mary Eunice Ryman, 82, of Bay City, 3 pm Wednesday at the Wadsworth Baptist Church.  Officiating at the services will be the Rev. R. P. Odom.

Ryman died February 14, 1983 at Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Ruth Spickler of Flint, Michigan, Laverne Lamb of Houston; son, A. J. Ryman of Bay City; sisters, Katie Ryman of Wadsworth, Virginia Ryman of Bay City; brother Alfred Laird of Houston; 3 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ryman was preceded in death by her husband Arthur David Ryman on January 25, 1983.

Ryman was a resident of the Bay City area for 62 years and a member of Wadsworth Baptist Church. 

Burial will follow services at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Pallbearers include Elmer, Harold R., Robert and Russell Ryman, Robert L. Anderson and Roy L. Laird.  Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Ollie Hatchett Ryman

RYMAN, Ollie Hatchett, age 69, passed away August 16, in Matagorda General Hospital. He was a life-long resident of Wadsworth and a member of the Wadsworth Baptist Church. Services will be held Tuesday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. Reverend R. P. Odom and Reverend R. E. Black will officiate at the Wadsworth Baptist Chruch. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Ryman is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katie Irene Ryman, Wadsworth; one daughter Mrs. Joyce Mohon, Houston; one son, Elmer H. Ryman, Wadsworth; and two sisters, Mrs. Rosie Hatchett, also of Wadsworth and Mrs. Gracie Sifford of Highland, California.

Also two brothers, Arthur J. of Wadsworth and Ernest of Edinburgh, Texas, and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be I. E. Ryman, James Ryman, Robert Ryman, Ray Ryman, Glenn Davis, and Frank Hatchett, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Lee Anderson, Jr., E. M. Adams, Fred Ryman, Tommie Ryman, Jesse Ryman, B. P. Sifford, E. J. Ashcraft, Lawrence Polinsky, Gifford Watkins, Doug Kain, Thelbert Simpson, and Ray Lee Laird.

Katie Irene Ryman

Funeral services for Katie Irene Ryman, 87, of Wadsworth will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Mrs. Ryman was born Aug 2, 1904, to Henry R. and Katie A. Parwell Anderson in Homer and died Aug. 27, 1991, at Matagorda House in Bay City.

A resident of the Wadsworth area since 1915, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Elmer Ryman of Bay City; a brother, Alfred Laird of Houston, a niece, Joyce Mohon of Huntsville; three grandchildren, Reba Hicks of El Campo, Laura Cowart of Humble and Patricia Ford of Bay City; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Roy Laird, Jack Weiss, Robert Ryman, Gary Tupa, Paul Marsalis and Robert Anderson.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.
