Almost everyone who knew her visited the beautiful garden she simply called her yard. Daylilies were her specialty because they bloom in a rainbow of colors. For her that was heaven. So instead of sending flowers that will soon die, please make a donation to the Landscaping Fund at FBC Sweeny. That way Faye can continue to bless all of us. Neva Bunch Stanley

Neva Bunch Stanley, was humming her favorite hymns, when she moved from Bay City to live in Paradise, which she was looking forward to.

Neva was born to Caressa Walker Bunch and Luther Bunch on June 14, 1917 - their beloved only child. Neva began working for Dow Chemical in 1942, and somewhat reluctantly, retired in 1977, as she absolutely loved her career and the people she worked with, and befriended over the years. She enjoyed recounting her many interesting experiences at Dow.

Neva married O.B. Stanley in 2001. They were childhood best friends and reconnected after O.B.’s wife died. They enjoyed each other’s company very much and their few years together were some of their best.

Neva’s survivors include a few distant cousins; her mother’s namesake, Caressa Speckman Inman; O.B.’s family; and a host of dear and close friends; whom she greatly loved.

Neva had a brilliant mind, and could remember minute details of everyone and every place she had ever visited, and was the go-to gal for every tidbit of goings on in Bay City. Neva’s name in Gaelic means radiance - brightness... which is not a surprise, as it fits her perfectly. She was proud that her birthday was on Flag day, so hang out your American flag on Tuesday in her honor!

Neva was a 67 year member of The Order of the Eastern Star, a member and officer of The Pilot Club, a United Methodist Women member and a Charter member of the Bay City Pink Ladies, having logged 2,509 volunteer hours.

A graveside service was held at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City, Texas, on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at 11a.m., followed by a celebration luncheon, in her honor, at the First Methodist Church, where all her friends and acquaintances were invited to come and reminisce together.

Joe Clifford Sumners Jr.

August 25, 1933 - June 14, 2015

Joe Clifford Sumners Jr., of Seguin, Texas, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015.

He was born August 25, 1933, in Coleman, Texas.

Joe served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, and he was primarily based in Germany. Following his service, Joe began working in the road boring business alongside his father, Joe Senior. Within a few years, Joe Jr., started his own company, Sumners Road Boring in Rosenberg, Texas. Sumners Road Boring Incorporated successfully took Joe across the United States for a decade.

In the early 70’s, Joe then took a position as Vice President of Horizontal Holes Inc. in Houston, Texas. He left this position at the age of 55 to begin his life anew, both personally and professionally, in Seguin, Texas.

It was during this time that Joe, as he had always advised his children, started to “stop and smell the roses”. He and his wife, Bobbie, began their travels around the globe, including China to see the Great Wall, Australia to dive the Great Barrier Reef and his favorite, Antarctica, where he slid down a glacier. Using his ingenuity he transformed his parka into his vehicle, and sped past a flock of penguins. Joe and his lifelong best friend, Thomas McDonald, who he knew since second grade, went on many adventures together along the Texas coast. When their children were young, he and Thomas enjoyed telling the children their mysterious and elaborate stories of treasure hunting and shipwrecks yet to be discovered.

Joe possessed a strong work ethic and an adventurous soul. He was a gentleman who was generous with his time, his wisdom, and his resources. He believed in opening doors and pulling the chair out for a woman as she sat down. He taught his children to follow course. His sense of humor and positive outlook on life attracted others to him and served him well, especially at the game of poker!

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joe (Pappy) Clifford Sr., and Dura (Mimi) Baxter Sumners; his younger brother, Jack; sisters, Hazel Reddock, Ann (Skimp) Dittlinger and Helen Kirby; and his wife Bobbie.

Florence Marie Svoboda

January 20, 1921 - August 27, 2015

Florence Marie Svoboda, 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Matagorda Regional Medical Center, in Bay City, Texas.

She was born January 20, 1921, in Wallis, Texas, and was a lifelong resident of Wallis, and a parish member of the Guardian Angel Catholic Church. In her youth, Florence was the church organist, and during World War II, worked in Houston at a munitions plant. She would commute to Wallis from Houston on every weekend, using the dinky train. Florence knew many people in Wallis and the surrounding area, because she worked at Dick’s Grocery store, and then the local post office, until her retirement.

She was a member of KJZT for over 75 years,  Catholic Daughters of America, and  volunteered at many American Legion and church events. All her life, she was an excellent cook and ardent gardener. Her last vegetable garden contained over fifty varieties of tomatoes, okra, squash, and onions. She and Charlie were a fixture at the bingo games in Wallis, Sealy, Columbus, Rosenberg, and Needville. Due to ill health, in her later years, Florence resided at the Legacy Campus in Bay City, Texas, to be near her family.

She is predeceased by her husband of sixty one years, Charlie Svoboda; her parents, Louis and Bessie Peter; and her two brothers, Leon and Jerry Peter.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Texana Melinda  Peter; nieces and nephews,  Mary Peter Cudd (Mike), Helen Peter, Louis Peter (Debbie), Kathleen Svoboda Parker, Joe Patrick Svoboda and Sandra Svoboda Payne; and many great nieces,  nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2015, with viewing from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., with a rosary at 1:30 p.m., and mass at 2:00 p.m., at Guardian Angel Catholic Church, Wallis, Texas.

Ralph T. Swenson
(February 6, 1918 - July 17, 2015)

Lt. Col. (Ret) Ralph T. Swenson, 97, of Haughton, Louisiana ended a long and productive life the morning of July 17, 2015. Born February 6, 1918, he was truly a member of this country’s greatest generation living through depression, World War II, the Korean War, the cold war, and retiring from the United States Air Force toward the end of the Viet Nam conflict. He grew up on his father’s farm in the Swedish community of Olivia, Texas, and lost his mother before he was old enough to enter school. When the nation called upon young people to enter the service for WW II, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps where he became an instructor for the B-24 bomber. During his life as a military pilot he flew many aircraft, but spent the most time on the B-24, B-32, B-29, B-50 and finally the B-47. His last command was as Squadron Commander for field maintenance at Barksdale AFB for the B-52’s and KC-135’s that flew missions over Viet Nam. After retirement, he worked civil service and supported his two sons through college, and went on to become a volunteer Bossier Parish Sherriff’s Deputy and a volunteer dispatcher at his local fire station in Haughton. He loved gardening, mechanics, and was always a good neighbor, available to help anyone in need. He was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church where he sung in the choir and served in various supportive roles. He will be remembered as one who always remained active, looked for things to keep busy, and maintained a life with purpose.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents Servin and Emma Wilson Swenson and step-mother Edna (the kids knew as grandma), sisters Ethel and Gladys, brother Philip, and his wife of 63 years Mary Margaret “Bobbie” McClure Swenson. He leaves behind daughter Mary Frances, sons Ralph Jr. and Marshall, daughter-in-law Barbara and two grandchildren Jenny and Eric.

Ralph was taken back to the town of Bay City, Texas, where services will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Viewing at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City will be at 10:00 a.m., followed by a lunch at the First Presbyterian Church at 11:30. The service will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the church, followed by internment at Olivia Cemetery next to his wife Bobbie. Pallbearers are Gene Klepac, Matthew Klepac, Eric Swenson, Dave Wilson, Chad Wilson and Marshall Swenson.

George Frank Swinford

George Frank Swinford, who died at his home four miles north of Palacios, Sunday, Nov. 30, 1930, was born in Coles County, Ill., May 24, 1862. He was married to Mrs. Belle Z. Curtis of Oakland, Ill., June 18, 1907.

Mr. Swinford, with his family, moved to Texas, Dec. 17, 1909 and settled on the place where he died, and which he had made to be one of the most productive and prettiest farm homes around Palacios.

The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church, was an industrious upright citizen and held in high regard by all who knew him. He had been in failing health for some time, yet his passing on came as a surprise and shock to many of our citizens.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday morning at 10:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. N. G. Ozment, pastor of the Methodist church, after which remains were interred in Palacios cemetery.

Mr. Swinford is survived by his wife, five brothers, and two step-sons, to whom our deepest sympathy is extended.

One brother from Oakland, Ill. came for the funeral service, as did both of his step-sons.

Frances Sylvis

April 13, 1936 - August 28, 2015

As the sun rose and kissed the Texas Gulf coast on Friday, August 28, 2015, our mother and friend, Frances Sylvis, awoke in the loving embrace of her Lord Jesus.

She passed from this earth as she lived, with honest simple strength and dignity. Born on April 13, 1936, in Waterbury, Maryland, to her parents, William and Alice Cole.

She married Edward Tinus and together raised seven children, Teri, Annie, Edward Jr., Daniel, Robert, Kathy and Michele. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Robert Sylvis.

Her church family, at Family Worship Center in Bay City, was very important and much loved by her, as she was by them.

Family Worship Center will honor her one last time, this Saturday, September 5, 2015, at 10 a.m.

She lived 79 chronological years, but many lifetimes in many states. Her final home was here in Matagorda County, Texas, because she fell in love with the people and area. A woman of many skills and many talents from home making, gardening, caring for pets, carpentry, painting, singing, riding motorcycles, marksmanship, hunting and fishing and so much more.

She was a devoted mother, who taught by example tough and soft love, the value of hard work, and to overcome adversity. Her children are a reflection of this, as we all achieved much, out of shear will and determination.

Surrounded by her children who came from all corners of the nation, she was told this battle could not be won. She had but a very brief moment of sorrow and regret she would not be able to go on a cruise with her girls. She pursed her lips and looked us square in the eye and said “life sucks”. At that moment she was ready to move on, and turned her attention to consoling and ministering to us, her children. We decorated her room like a luau and wore clothing fitting of a cruise, in her final moments. She not only taught us how to love, how to persevere and overcome and how to live, she taught us how to die. She asked for prayer that Jesus would take her, and while surrounded by her children, we sang her favorite songs, stroking her hair, telling her how much she is loved, she fell asleep and awoke in heaven. In a mere blink of an eye for her, though many years for us, we will be at her side again.

We love and miss our friend, mom and mom-mom but though she is not with us, she will never leave us, as we are her. God bless her and hers.
