Alice Isabell Kopecky Vacek, 95, passed away February 28, 2005, in Bay City.
Mrs. Vacek was born August 24, 1909, on the San Gabriel River near Granger, Texas.
Alice was the second of five daughters born to John and Frances Kopecky.
When Alice was about seven, the family moved to Sugar Land, Texas, where her father worked at the sugar refinery.
In her teen years, Alice recalled going to the dedication of the first bridge across the Brazos River in Richmond and being too young to stay for the celebration dance.
The family later moved to the Deming's Bridge Area in Matagorda County.
They lived at the Old Rancho Grande, where the red out-buildings are still standing near Hawley Cemetery.
Alice's family has been blessed with hearing many stories of her life in the early 1900s, including her riding a horse to school, dancing on platforms at neighbors' farms and helping her aunt hang mail on a hook over a track in El Maton for a passing train to retrieve.
Alice married a neighbor, Edmund Vacek, in 1929, and loved to tell how a two-week rain made the roads so muddy the priest from Hillje couldn't get to the wedding, the couple rode the train to him.
After the wedding, they took the train back to Blessing, where they spent their wedding night at the Blessing Hotel, a hotel they later managed in the 1960s.
In the early 1930s, the couple moved to Sugar Land where Alice worked for 12 years for Imperial Sugar Co.
In 1945, the family moved to Blessing, where they operated several businesses until they retired.
Survivors include: two sons and their wives, E.R. and Billie Vacek of Blessing, and Carlos and Beth Vacek of Orange; sisters, Martha Thompson and Mary Popek of El Maton; brother, Alfred Kopecky of El Maton; sister-in-law, Edith Hickl of Palacios; grandchildren, Ginger Collins, Kenneth Vacek, Penny Acuna, Glenn Vacek, Damon Vacek, Carla Vacek and Annette Robinson; great-grandchildren, Casey Collins, Clayton Collins, Calen Collins, Kenneth Vacek, Jr., Valerie Vacek, Taylor Vacek, Darren Acuna, Whitley Vacek, Levi Vacek and Allison Camacho; and numerous nieces, nephew, and friends who called her Aunt Alice and Grandma.
Mrs. Vacek is preceded in death by: her parents; her loving husband of 55 years, Edmund Vacek; and sisters, Albina Vareska and Elsie Sliva Williams.
The family requests that contributions be made to Hospice Support, Inc, P.O. Box 1417, El Campo, Texas 77437.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at the Hawley Cemetery in Blessing, Texas, with Father Sam Appiasi officiating.
Pallbearers are: Kenneth Vacek, Glenn Vacek, D Ray Acuna, Ricky Collins, Damon Vacek, Clay Collins and Taylor Vacek.
Honorary pallbearers are: Wilbur Vaclivick, Dan Duffy, Bill Pryor, W.L. James and Gene Atkins.

Funeral services for Edmund Richard Vacek Sr., 77, of Blessing, will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery. Mr. Vacek was born Nov. 11, 1906, in Taton, Texas to Vince and Elizabeth (Naisey) Vacek. He died Oct. 2, 1984, at Matagorda General Hospital. He was a retired merchant and had been a resident of Blessing since 1945. Survivors include his wife, Alice (Kopecky) Vacek of Blessing; two sons, Carlos Vacek of Orange, Texas, and E. R. Vacek Jr. of Blessing; three sisters, Mary Orsak of Blessing, Betty Tomasek of El Maton and Edith Hickl of Palacios; a brother, Jimmy Vacek of El Maton; and six grandchildren. Fred Emil Valigura, 93, of Bay City passed away October 22, 2008. He was born May 3, 1915 in Wharton County to the late Frank & Wilemina Roznovsky Valigura. After serving in the US Army during WWII, he opened Bay City Glass Co. in 1946 and continued to operate the business until 1990. His wife Christine Valigura and son Ladis Kelly Valigura preceded him in death. Survivors include son Fred Lee Valigura of Bay City, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Final rites for Markham resident Leo Melvin Valigura, 33, were held at 2:30 p. m. Sunday from Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. J. R. Brown officiating. Valigura died Friday at his residence. He was born in Bay City on June 24, 1930, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Markham. Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest H. Valigura of Markham and one brother, William Milton Valigura of Corpus Christi. Interment was in Hawley Cemetery and pallbearers were Belton Snider, Victor Burchfield, J. Grady Walker, Harold Hansen, Frank Valigura and A. J. Herbert Sr.

Rhonda M. Jenney Vallely, 47, of Van Vleck passed away January 12, 2007. She was born January 22, 1959 in Plainwell, Michigan to Walter Louis and Shirley Ann Frost Jenney. Rhonda and her family moved to Pasadena, Texas in 1966. She graduated in 1977 from Pasadena High School. Shortly after graduation she moved to Sargent and lived there for many years. She has been a resident of Van Vleck for the past 20 years. She was very active in the Sargent area and served on the Van Vleck School Board before having children of her own. Since living in the Bay City area she has been active in the 1st Baptist Church in Van Vleck and Calvary Baptist in Bay City. She was director of the Matagorda Services including Wamco Pallet and the Recycling Center. She secured the land and obtained grants to build the buildings and buy the equipment. She was director of the Matagorda County Museum in Bay City for several years. She also worked on the Karma, the floating A & M Classroom in Matagorda. Currently she was the Education Director for the Matagorda County Nature Center. Survivors include her husband Hugh Vallely of Van Vleck; mother Shirley Burr & her husband Bruce of Houston; father Walter L. Jenney of Pasadena; sons Kevin Sanders, US Air Force, Persido of Monterey, CA and J. Ross Sanders, US Marines, Pensacola, FL; stepson Lee Northcutt & wife Brooke & their daughter Aurielle of Austin; stepdaughter Jennifer South & husband Michael, US Navy & their sons Andrew, Michael, and Logan of Jacksonville, FL; sisters Lorinda Draper of Pasadena & Carla Means & husband Thomas of Houston; mother-in-law Joan Vallely of Prescott, AZ; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. Mrs. Van Dyke was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Lockhart, Texas, to Neeley and Alta Moore Etheredge and died Dec. 8, 1986, at her residence. She was a member of the Baptist church. Robbie Estelle Lloyd Van Ness, 85, reunited with her husband Bill in Heaven on Aug. 5, 2010. Robbie was born the sixth of seven children on Mar. 8, 1925 in Tennessee. Her family moved to Bay City when she was very young and she spent most of her early years in that area. She graduated from Boling High School in1943. While Bill was fighting in WWII, Robbie was a “Rosie the Riveter” in Utah patching battle damaged airplanes. She and Bill were married May 25, 1946, just after his return from the war. Their marriage lasted 58 years until Bill’s death in 2004. Bill and Robbie spent most of their lives in Houston, where she was a housewife and mother and later grandmother “Nana” and great-grandmother. In 1987, they retired to Lake Cherokee in the Longview area where they both peacefully lived surrounded by family and friends. Her hobbies included sewing, fishing, and playing bridge. Robbie is proceeded in death by her husband Bill Van Ness; her sister Louise and brother-in-law Voss McCrosky (who helped raise her), her sisters Sarah and Aunnine, and her brothers Aubrey, Thestle, and Garner. She is survived by her daughter Carol Ehl and her husband Don, her son Billy Joe Van Ness and his wife Linda; her granddaughter Monica Edwards, her grandson Matt Edwards and his wife Alysan, her grandson Jason Van Ness, her grandson Cary Shatto and his wife Angie, her step-grandson William and his wife Ronna; her niece, who was more like a sister, Donna Johnson and her husband Hubert; her great-grandchildren Shea, Jordan, Daylon, Braxton, Jaclyn, Madalyn, Jillian, Reese and Camden; her dear friends John Cone, Monica Goodwin and Lynda Suter, and several other nieces, nephews, and friends. Pallbearers will be Chris Gibson, Daylon Howell, Skipper Osborne, Terry Osborne, Doug Lloyd and Wayne Head. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Aug. 8 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Joanna Grace Vaughan went home to be with her Lord on December 11, 2010, at Guadalupe Regional Memorial Hospital in Seguin, Texas. She was born March 3, 1924, in Thornhill, Louisiana, to Leroy Fred and Leona May Notestein Elliott. Her brothers and sisters were Fred Rosemond, Loree, Russell Norman, Charles Ellery, Alice May, LeRoy Frank, Francis Andrew, Nellie Louise and Winona Mary. Many of them attended school in Lake Arthur along with the neighboring Whitman kids. After graduating high school, she attended St. Mary’s Nursing School in Port Arthur, Texas. She received a Bachelors degree of nursing (R.N.). It was there she met her future husband, Rabb Wesley Vaughan. They married and moved to Bay City, Texas. She was employed at Matagorda General Hospital for many years. In 1965, the hospital had undergone renovation with a new Intensive Care Unit. Jo was sent by the hospital to Chicago, Illinois, for training on the equipment. She served as head nurse for the ICU, in Labor and Delivery, Change Nurse on second floor. Retirement came too soon for so great a nurse. Jo taught many, many new nurses what it meant to be a nurse. She was known to many as Jo or Nannie. Two children were born to Rabb and Jo, daughter Myra Anne was born August 13, 1949, and son, Watts Rabb was born November 11, 1951. Jo was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, and sisters, Fred, Loree, Russell, Ellery, Alice LeRoy and Winona; her son-in-law Norman Galle, and daughter Myra Vaughan Galle. She leaves behind: her son, Watts Rabb and his wife Kaye; grandsons, Watts Jr. “Jarbey” and his wife Shauna Vaughan, Todd Galle, Barton and his wife Jennifer Galle, Sean and his wife Jennifer Galle; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Alec, Jacob, Jordon, Savannah, Abigail and Natalie; brother, Francis and wife Nelda; sister, Nellie Louise; along with numerous nieces and nephews; step-daughter Kaye Baker and husband Duffie. Family and friends will join together for a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 18, 2010, at Abundant Life Fellowship Church, 1900 Hamman Road with the Pastor Greg McMullen and the Pastor Lloyd Whitman officiating. Her family would like to honor Jo with a gift to the American Diabetic Association in lieu of flowers.

Joe Vavrecka, Sr., age 70 years, 9 months and 29 days died Tuesday morning at 1 a. m. at the Loos Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Joe Vavrecka of El Maton, three sons, Joe Vavrecka of Blessing, Frank Vavrecka of El Maton and Jim Vavrecka of Sugarland and seven daughters, Mrs. Julia Voytek of Goose Creek, Mrs. Louis Kopestky [Kopecky?] of El Maton, Mrs. Frances Urban and Mrs. Mary Tallos of Sugarland, Mrs. Rosalie Hicks of Marshall, Mrs. Sofie Koupa of Rosenberg and Mrs. Alvin Schembera of Houston. Mr. Vavrecka died from the effects of being burned when a gasoline heater exploded while he, Mr. Joe Dedek and Louis Patulla were sitting around it at Mr. Potulla’s house. Mr. Dedek had his hand burned very severely while getting Mr. Vavrecka out of the burning house, which was destroyed and all of its contents lost. Funeral services were held at the Hawley Cemetery, Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Bros.

Janie Vela, 74, better known as Janie Saenz passed away peacefully on Thursday November 22, 2007, Thanksgiving Day, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 8, 1934 to Solomon and Mary Cadriel, Janie was the eldest of her brothers and sisters. She was married to Ruben Saenz in 1955. Together they had one daughter, Alvina Saenz. Janie’s life long work included owning and operating her restaurant business for over 54 years. Her first business was in Van Vleck, from there she moved to Bay City and owned and operated, “Saenz Café” for 19 years. She then relocated to “Saenz Café” in Van Vleck, where she was known to many people. After being married for 23 years, Ruben Saenz passed away at the age of 59 in 1978. By this time, Janie had been in the restaurant business for close to 25 years. On March 8, 1980, Janie Married Epolito Vela and began what would be a lasting love affair for over 27 years. Being married to “Polo” brought along a new adventure of becoming a stepmother to Raymond Vela, Paul Vela Jr., Mary Henderson, and Ruben Vela. Janie was a loving, very well known, respected Business owner. After marrying “Polo” Vela she opened Vela’s Taco House in Sugar Valley. In 1991 she took the biggest and hardest hit of all. Losing her only daughter Alvina Juarez to cancer at the early age of 38. Throughout that rough battle, Janie knew she had to be strong. She went back to work at Vela’s and it was not until Hwy 35 expanded to a two lane Hwy. that she finally decided to put down the “big stainless steel spoon” and retired in 1996. Alvina left Janie 4 grandchildren to cherish Felicia Randle & husband DeAdrian, Priscilla Martinez & husband Vincent, Maria Juarez & husband Curtis and Ruben Juarez & wife Tammy. Janie and Polo loved spending quick weekend trips to their favorite little spot, “Cashotta.” One thing she always treasured was that her great grand children Mikail, Jajuan, & Alvina Randle, Brandon Miller, Alexis & Roxanna Martinez, Janie, Malcolm & Yvonne Franklin and Raylynn Faith Juarez were all next door to her. He great grandkids were the apple of her eye. She could not go anywhere in town without having a story to tell them. She instilled a lot of faith into all of her kids. Her daily ritual was to bless every one of them each morning before going to school. Whether it was blessing them with the “sign of the cross” or just praying a quick prayer to make sure they had a wonderful day. Two weeks after Thanksgiving in 2005, Janie was diagnosed with Liver Cancer. Throughout her struggle with her illness, she would never let it get her down. She always said, “when I die, don’t cry for me, I have had a wonderful life. I have traveled the world and no one can ask God for a better life than what he has given to me.” She was a fighter until the very end, never letting anything slow her down. She was preceded in death by two sisters Estella Escobar & Mary Rodriguez & brother Solomon Cadriel. She leaves behind a loving husband and devoted family to remember her. Sisters Rosie Morales, Patsy Longoria, Sophie Navarras; and brothers Joe, Frank & Lupe Cadriel. She was a very strong willed woman. No matter what came her way, good or bad. She made the best of it. Rest in peace Grandma and sleep with the angels. Hold the door open for us and we will meet you again at the Golden Gate. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Friday, Nov. 23, 2007 at Taylor Bros. She was a lifelong resident of Palacios and has performed extensive volunteer work for the Red Cross Dentistry Department. She is survived by her husband Percy J. R. Alfredo Villafuerte, 52, of Bay City passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2007. He was born February 24, 1955 to Eusevio & Maria De La Luz Jacobo Villafuerte in Santa Ana Maya, Michoacan, Mexico. Alfredo has lived in Bay City for the past 31 years, and was a member of our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Funeral services were held for Madeleine C. Vincent, 91, of Los Angeles, California, 11:30 a. m. today (Wednesday) at St. John Episcopal Church in Palacios. Officiating at the services was the Rev. Jack Lowery. Vincent died January 4, 1982 at the Gulf Coast Hospital in Wharton. Survivors include numerous cousins. Vincent was born March 8, 1890 in St. Louis, Missouri, one of twin daughters of Frank Lyon and Jeannie Hall Battle. She was a cousin of Adelaide Hall Pierce (Mrs. Abel B. Sr.) of Blessing. She moved with her family to California in 1905 and resided in Los Angeles until recently coming to live at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abel B. Pierce Jr. in Blessing. She was the widow of James Vincent of Los Angeles, a veteran of World War I in the Canadian Army and left no descendants.
Burial followed services at Hawley Cemetery. Pallbearers included Lee M. Pierce, Lee H. Pierce, Michael E. Pierce, Fredrick L. Pierce, James L. Pierce Jr., Abel B. Pierce Jr. and George L. Harrison. Arrangements with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

PALACIOS - Lataricia Kaye Ringo Viningre, 54, of Palacios, died Wednesday, June 1, 2005.
She was born Nov. 28, 1950, in Palacios, to the late William Earl and Stella Mae Branigan Ringo. She was a homemaker and a member of The Living Word Church.
Survivors: husband, Harold L. Viningre; sons, Charles Robert Heath of Huntington, Tenn., Freddie Earl Heath Sr. of Palacios, and Harry Marshall Heath Jr. of Wharton; sister, Vonda Starlene Motes of Port Lavaca; and seven grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: sisters, Elsie Lee Plachy and Mary Bell; and brother, Calvin Meril Ringo.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. tonight at The Living Word Church in Palacios.
A prayer service will be 7 p.m. tonight at the church.

Homer Andrew Vos, 88 of Van Vleck died August 21, 2005 at the Specialty Hospital in Houston, TX. He was born October 14, 1916 in Almyra, AR to the late Charlie Andrew and Ina Belle Rollison Vos. Mr. Vos was a member of the First Baptist Church in Van Vleck for the past 50 years. He was a resident of Van Vleck since 1955. He came to Texas in 1939 and worked first for Abercrombie in Sweeny for 15 years, during which time he also served in the US Army Air Corps from 1941-1945. He retired from Brown & Root Construction Co. in 1981 after 26 years as a welder and pipe fitter. Survivors include: 2 daughters and a son-in-law: Robin Vos Havard of Wharton, TX and Janet Vos & Michael Amtower of Lake Jackson, TX; son and daughter-in-law: Gary A. and Angela Vos of Katy, TX; brother: Glenn Vos of Almyra, AR; and 7 grandchildren: Kelly & Marc Amtower of Denton, TX, Randie, Jeff, & Carly Havard all of Wharton, TX, and Brandon & Lindsay Vos both of Katy, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Alma Faye Vos. Funeral Service will be 10:00 AM Thursday, August 25, 2005, at the First Baptist Church in Van Vleck with Rev. Maurine “Mimi” Thompson Voyles went to be with her Lord on June 10, 2012 at the age of 98. She was born on Friday, November 13, 1913 in Bay City, Texas to Ada Brimer Thompson and Frank Arthur Thompson. She attended the University of Texas in Austin and Rice University. Maurine was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband of 54 years, J. D. Voyles, her brother, Bill Thompson and her son, Jerry Voyles. She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Sawyer, son-in-law, Thomas Sawyer, daughter-in-law, Ellen Voyles, grandsons, Jeff Waggener and Scott Voyles, granddaughter, Katherine Lamb, great grandchildren, Brent Waggener, Kristen Waggener, Adrienne Lamb, Allie Voyles, and Taylor Voyles. Maurine was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Bay City and Colonial Hills United Methodist Church in San Antonio. She was a founder and served as first president of the Pink Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, a Girl Scout Troop Leader for many years, a member of Chatauqua and an avid bridge player. She made beautiful clothes for her children, grandchildren, and herself and loved preparing wonderful meals for family members. She will always be remembered for her incredible fudge. She followed University of Texas Longhorn Sports closely and was an enthusiastic Longhorn fan for many years. Maurine was much loved and enjoyed by friends and family members alike. She had a keen sense of humor and a very strong spirit. Her family was richly blessed to have her for so many years. A Memorial Service will be held at Colonial Hills United Methodist Church in San Antonio on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Vaughan’s Funeral Home of Boerne.

CITY - Miguel C. Vargas, 95, of Bay City, passed away Wednesday,
Oct. 21, 2009. He was born Dec. 19, 1913 in Jaral de Berrios,
Guanajuato, Mexico to the late Begnino Vargas and Gonzala Castillo
Vargas. He was a resident of Bay City since 1948, was retired from
the City of Bay City Maintenance Dept., and was a member of Our Lady
of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
She
was an artist and made a career before the era of color photography
in coloring photographic portraits (especially miniatures) with oil
paints and teaching this technique in city schools. Many examples of
her work hang in the Pierce home in Blessing.
