Lorenzo R. Valdez, 70, of Bay City, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at his residence. Lorenzo was born in Bay City on October 27, 1942 to parents, John and Julia Rodriguez Valdez. He was a life long resident of Bay City and retired from the South Texas Nuclear Project where he worked in the tool shop. Lorenzo was preceded in death by his parents; and by a son, Lorenzo Valdez, Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Debbie Rodriguez and Katy Garay; son David Valdez; brothers, Jesse and John Valdez; half-brother, Guadalupe Valdez; and half-sisters, Mary Rose Cox and Corrina Cortez. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The family received visitors on Thursday, August 8, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a rosary service recited at 6:30 p.m., at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Mass was held Friday August 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Msgr. Gerry Cernoch officiating. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Manuel Rodriguez, Markie Rodriguez, Anselmo Herrera, Johnny Quintanilla, Jesse Quintanilla, and Lorenzo Valdez, III served as pallbearers. Virginia Vantrease, 85, passed away Sunday, May 12, in Edmond, Ok. after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, W. H. Vantrease. She is survived by: two daughters, Sharon Bruce of Austin (formerly of Bay City); and Sandra (David) Mleko of Edmond, Ok., and one granddaughter, Christy Petray of Austin (formerly of Bay City). Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 18, at the JA Funk Funeral Home in Malvern, Ark. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Alzheimer's Research, or help the caregiver of an Alzheimer's patient. Sharon wishes to thank everyone who prayed for her Mom during her illness.

Andrew Victor Vasek was born on February 9, 1993, and left this world on September 15, 2014. Andrew was a bright ray of sunshine that could light up a room with his smile. He touched many lives the short time he was in this world and he will be missed by all that knew him. As a small child, Andrew loved to go fishing and crabbing with his Mamaw. He loved all sports and played little baseball, basketball and soccer. While in Junior High, he began playing football and found his true passion. He played defensive tackle for the Black Cats and was named to the all district and all county teams, both his junior and senior year. He was a member of the Wadsworth 4-H from third grade through his senior year in high school and raised rabbits for the Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Show. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Steve Vasek and Leona Clemmons, and Alvin and Violet Smith. Andrew leaves behind to cherish his memory, his parents, Charles and Nancy Vasek; brother, Brad Vasek; sister, Megan Cerceo and brother-in-law, Joe Cerceo. Other family members include aunts, Shirley Bokorney (Joe), Betty Davis (Jeff), Valerie Hardy (Marty), Suzanne Talasek, and Linda Fuqua; uncles, Steve Vasek (Lisa) and Chris Vasek (Sheryl); cousins, Bo Bokorney, Tell Bokorney, Steven Vasek (Lindsey), Kristie Vasek, Shelby Baker (Blake), Taylor Vasek, Justin Hardy, Jared Hardy, Brandy Hicks (Russell), Tara Simons, Christopher Talasek, Summer Fuqua, Cisco Fuqua, Avery Fuqua and Reason Fuqua; nieces, Morgan and Ryleigh Cerceo; and nephew, Kayden Cerceo. There are also numerous other relatives and friends that will miss his bright smile and beautiful eyes. A memorial service was held on Friday, September 19, 2014 at First Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda. Janie Vela, 74, better known as Janie Saenz passed away peacefully on Thursday November 22, 2007, Thanksgiving Day, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 8, 1934 to Solomon and Mary Cadriel, Janie was the eldest of her brothers and sisters. She was married to Ruben Saenz in 1955. Together they had one daughter, Alvina Saenz. Janie’s life long work included owning and operating her restaurant business for over 54 years. Her first business was in Van Vleck, from there she moved to Bay City and owned and operated, “Saenz Café” for 19 years. She then relocated to “Saenz Café” in Van Vleck, where she was known to many people. After being married for 23 years, Ruben Saenz passed away at the age of 59 in 1978. By this time, Janie had been in the restaurant business for close to 25 years. On March 8, 1980, Janie Married Epolito Vela and began what would be a lasting love affair for over 27 years. Being married to “Polo” brought along a new adventure of becoming a stepmother to Raymond Vela, Paul Vela Jr., Mary Henderson, and Ruben Vela. Janie was a loving, very well known, respected Business owner. After marrying “Polo” Vela she opened Vela’s Taco House in Sugar Valley. In 1991 she took the biggest and hardest hit of all. Losing her only daughter Alvina Juarez to cancer at the early age of 38. Throughout that rough battle, Janie knew she had to be strong. She went back to work at Vela’s and it was not until Hwy 35 expanded to a two lane Hwy. that she finally decided to put down the “big stainless steel spoon” and retired in 1996. Alvina left Janie 4 grandchildren to cherish Felicia Randle & husband DeAdrian, Priscilla Martinez & husband Vincent, Maria Juarez & husband Curtis and Ruben Juarez & wife Tammy. Janie and Polo loved spending quick weekend trips to their favorite little spot, “Cashotta.” One thing she always treasured was that her great grand children Mikail, Jajuan, & Alvina Randle, Brandon Miller, Alexis & Roxanna Martinez, Janie, Malcolm & Yvonne Franklin and Raylynn Faith Juarez were all next door to her. He great grandkids were the apple of her eye. She could not go anywhere in town without having a story to tell them. She instilled a lot of faith into all of her kids. Her daily ritual was to bless every one of them each morning before going to school. Whether it was blessing them with the “sign of the cross” or just praying a quick prayer to make sure they had a wonderful day. Two weeks after Thanksgiving in 2005, Janie was diagnosed with Liver Cancer. Throughout her struggle with her illness, she would never let it get her down. She always said, “when I die, don’t cry for me, I have had a wonderful life. I have traveled the world and no one can ask God for a better life than what he has given to me.” She was a fighter until the very end, never letting anything slow her down. She was preceded in death by two sisters Estella Escobar & Mary Rodriguez & brother Solomon Cadriel. She leaves behind a loving husband and devoted family to remember her. Sisters Rosie Morales, Patsy Longoria, Sophie Navarras; and brothers Joe, Frank & Lupe Cadriel. She was a very strong willed woman. No matter what came her way, good or bad. She made the best of it. Rest in peace Grandma and sleep with the angels. Hold the door open for us and we will meet you again at the Golden Gate. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Friday, Nov. 23, 2007 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Mass is 10:00 am Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with Father Gerry Cernoch officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Andres V. Veliz, 56, of Bay City, died January 26, 2001 at Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston. He was born August 3, 1949 in Arkansas to Margarito and Consuelo Valdez Veliz. Mr. Veliz was a resident of Bay City the past 23 years. Survivors include: wife, Guadalupe Ramires Veliz of Bay City; mother, Consuelo Veliz of Fort Worth; daughters, Paula Valdez and husband Lorenzo, Maria Rodriguez and husband Angel, and Angie Veliz all of Bay City; sons, Andres Veliz, Jr. of Bay City; sisters, Petra Ruiz and Gloria Chavez of Fort Worth, Fella Salmeron of Edinburg; three grandchildren, Lorena M. Valdez, Lorenzo Valdez, III and Elias Rodriquez all of Bay City. Mr. Veliz was preceded in death by his father Magarito Veliz. Prayer services will be 7 p. m. Roger D. Venglar, 65, of Bay City passed away July 20, 2013. He was born December 18, 1947 in Freeport, TX to the late John D. Venglar and Janey Lee Cumby Venglar. Roger loved his family and friends and was gifted with the ability to build or repair most anything. Survivors include his wife, Tomasa Venglar of Bay City; daughter, Kristi Pottgieser and husband Robert of Florida; step-sons Ramon Perez and Carlos Saldana; sister, Teresa Venglar Orr & husband Darryl of Brazoria; half-sister, Patsy Thornton & husband Rodney; grandchildren Hannah Pottgieser, Josh Fitzgerald and wife Katie, Jordyn Wray and husband Jessie; and special nieces, Tabitha Orr and Bailey and Janey Orr. Kerri Ann Verbeck Kerri Ann Verbeck, 17 months, Bay City, died Thursday, November 23 in Matagorda General Hospital. She was born June 19, 1977 in Corpus Christi and was a Bay City Resident for the past 8 months. Survivors include her parents, Vance and Martha Jane Verbeck of Bay City, grandparents, Mrs. Jane Fillingame of San Antonio and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Verbeck of Ingleside. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Saturday, November 25, at 10:00 am Rev Merle S. Waters will officiate. Interment at Roselawn Memorial Park. BAY CITY - Eric Warren Vercher, 30, of Bay City passed away January 13, 2015. He was born November 24, 1984 in Bastrop, LA to Keith Vercher and Roxanne Ruth Vercher.
He was a 2003 graduate of Sterlington High School where he competed in the State Competition Pole Vaulting and played football for the team who took State that year.
He is survived by his wife Darci Vercher, who is expecting their child in June, of Bay City; daughter Danielle Nicole of Oyster Creek, TX; father Keith Vercher of Hammond, LA; mother Roxanne Vercher of Needville, TX; brother Chaz Vercher & wife Logan; nieces Bella Rose and Natalia Vila and grandmother Jewel Ruth & her companion Buddy Kelley of Bastrop, LA. A memorial service honoring his life will be 10:00 AM Monday, January 19, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Markham with Rev. Damon Rambo officiating.

“There comes a time for all of us Mr. Viets had lived almost fifty years in our community, quiet and unassuming in his manner, he numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior when a young man, and lived a consistent Christian life. He was particularly interested in the Music Department of the church, and was a choir member for many years, helping in quartettes and duets. How we wish the world had more men like Mr. Viets, men with such Christian character and integrity are sorely needed today. He was born in Albin, Ohio April 25, 1879 and moved to Kansas with his parents one year later. He was married to Lena Langvardt in Alta Vista, Kansas May 2, 1900. Three children came to bless the home, who, with their loving families, mourn the loss of devoted father and loving grandfather. Services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. John Fluth and music was furnished by four ladies of the former choir of which he was a member, Mrs. J. J. Harbison, Mrs. R. T. Phillips, Mrs. Walter Milam, and Mrs. J. M. Pennington. Organist Carolyn Johnson. Pall-bearers were E. B. Hogg, H. L. Brown, J. J. Harbison, Paul Gerhard, Martin Nelson and Guy Johnson. The many friends of C. B. Evelyn Mae Viets, 77, formerly of Palacios, passed away May 16, 2015. She was born April 7, 1937 in Portland, OR to the late Gilbert Locke and Elizabeth Rebecca Mitchell. She had been a resident of Victoria for the past 8 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Gerard Benjamin Viets. Survivors include daughter Lisa Petrisky & husband Michael of Victoria; son Gary Viets & wife Scottie of Victoria; brother Gene Mauk of Kansas; grandchildren Sarah Hulin & husband Justin and Stanley Petrisky and great grandchildren Nolan Hulin and Lauren Hulin. The family will receive friends and relative from 5pm until 7pm Monday at the funeral home. Maurice Clifton and Carrie Ferguson Glenn. She was a resident of The
Woodlands the past four years and a former longtime resident of Bay
City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City. |

Doyle Benard Volkmer, was born to Henry Benard and Erma Doyle Volkmer, on July 11, 1940, at Detar Hospital in Victoria Texas. After a battle with cancer, he went to be with the Lord on June 15, 2015, at the age of 74. Doyle’s family moved to Bay City from Victoria in 1949. He attended Bay City schools and left to join the Army in January, 1959. While in Army, he became a commissioned officer. He was stationed in many places including Germany. This is where he would meet his future wife. Ute Lauer was a beautiful young German girl, and on June 16, 1961, they were married. Two years later, their daughter, Michele was born on June 16, 1963, in Landstuhl, Germany. They moved back to the United States in late 1963, where their second child, a son Randy Volkmer, was born on August 14, 1964, in Fort Hood, Texas. From 1966-1967, as a first Lieutenant in the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, Doyle was sent to lead a platoon into the jungles of Vietnam. While there, he was wounded and rehabbed in country. Once his tour was finished, he was sent back to the United States, where he retired from the Army and moved back to Bay City for good. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest. After his time in the service, Doyle and his wife Ute made their life here in Bay City. They took over the management of one of the first drive-in restaurants in Bay City, from his parents, Circle C Drive Inn. He worked for a period of time for his friends, Earl and Leta Ward, at Ward Realty, and eventually opened his own realty company, Gulf Coast Realty. He was later employed by the county as the flood plains manager, where he eventually retired. Doyle enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing. He also enjoyed working on his pecan trees. His greatest joy in life was his family and friends. He never met a stranger and was always ready to help someone who needed a hand. Doyle was active in many organizations throughout his life. One that he is very proud of is his membership in the Masons Organization, where he has been a member for over fifty years. He believed strongly in their principles. As a Mason he became a 32nd degree member of the Scottish rite, after which, he joined the Shriners Organization. He was very fond of the Shriners, for the helps they gave to all children, at no charge through the Shriners Hospital in Houston and other cities. Doyle was also the President of the National and Texas retired 4th Infantry division members and was a lifelong member of the local VFW Post. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Erma Volkmer; and by his loving daughter, Michele Volkmer Pawlosky. Survivors include his wife of fifty four years, Ute Volkmer; his son, Dr. Randy Volkmer and his wife Lisa of Bay City; his four grandsons, Randy Dean Volkmer II, Karson Doyle Volkmer, James Dillon Pawlosky, and Payton Doyle Pawlosky; his brothers, Frank Volkmer, Sr. and his wife Joyce of Bay City, and Wayne Volkmer and his wife Rosalie of Willis, Texas; son-in-law, Ray Pawlosky; numerous family members and their children in Germany, his brother’s children and very close friends. Funeral services will be held a 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at St Peters Lutheran Church in Bay City, Texas, with the Reverend Dick Kastner officiating. Interment will follow at Cedervale Cemetery in Bay City, Texas, where the local VFW will present the full Military honors, and the Masonic Lodge will administer the Masonic rites. Pallbearers are Albert Garrison, Bubba Bucek, Payton Pawlosky, Dillon Pawlosky, Karson Volkmer, and Randy Volkmer II. Honorary pallbearers are Kenneth Volkmer, Glennwood Volkmer, Larry Volkmer, Raymond Burt, James Pawlosky, and Scott Doty.
