Martin Garcia

No one contributed more...

Editor:

My old friend and fellow worker Martin Garcia passed away on March 28, 1988. He served as the lead custodian at the new Palacios Junior High School on Shark Drive from March 1963 until his retirement from the PISD in August 1977. I do not believe that I ever worked with anyone who was more loyal to the PISD or contributed more of himself. He not only very capably kept the facilities in clean and neat condition, but he was always available to do a little extra for the teaching staff. It was not unusual for Martin to give a little counseling to a boy who wanted to drop-out of school. He always let them know that his work was hard and more education could lead to better things.

Martin was very proud of a little card that he always carried in his pocketbook. The card was his certificate of lawful entry into the United States. It stated that he was born November 12, 1909 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and he arrived in Laredo, Texas by rowboat on August 4, 1918. He showed me that card many times and always said when he arrived by rowboat it made him different from those who didn't come across by rowboat.

I always enjoyed the bean tamales that he gave me and I am sure he always enjoyed the cold six-packs I gave him. In many ways our friendship was genuine. He liked to tell me about his gardening experiences with O. M. "Doc" Roane. He would tell me when he would ask "Doc" why he plowed the rows crooked that Doc would tell him, "crooked rows are longer and they could grow more vegetables." With a grin he would say, "He thinks that I believe him."

I am sure that Martin arrived by rowboat on golden shores where the order of the day is not a lot of hard work, but time spent with a lot of good friends, cold cerveza and long siestas.

Adios, Martin
