Frank Gatica

Funeral services for Frank Gatica, 79, were held Sept. 17 at 2 p. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Gerard Cernoch officiating. Military graveside services under the auspices of Queen Hamlin Post #2467 followed at Palacios Cemetery. A rosary was recited Sept. 16 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Gatica was born Oct. 2, 1907 in Matagorda and died Sept. 16, 1987 at Wagner General Hospital. He was the son of Antonio and Simona Camacho Gatica.

Survivors include sisters, Bessie Gatica Diaz, Pola Gatica Rivas and Dominga Gatica Solis, all of Palacios; brothers, Lino Camacho Gatica of Bay City and Maximo Camacho Gatica, Leon Camacho Gatica, and Herman Camacho Gatica, all of Palacios.

Pallbearers were Robert Gatica, Herman Gatica, Randy Diaz, Daniel Rivas, Robert Diaz, and Fred Diaz Jr.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Savina Gatica Macias and two brothers, Monico Gatica and Quirino Gatica.

Gabriel C. Gatica & Fred O. Rojas
Two Electrocuted When TV Antenna Falls On Highline

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 26, for Gabriel C. Gatica and Fred O. Rojas, who were electrocuted Thursday afternoon when the TV antenna they were helping to install at Cruz Ochoa’s house at 210 Tenth Street came in contact with high voltage wires.

The Palacios Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene to administer first aid to the victims and to put out a grass fire started by the fallen highline. Both men were rushed to Wagner General Hospital but were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Funeral services for Gabriel Gatica were held at 10 a. m. Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Harrold officiating. Interment made in the Palacios Cemetery.

A native of Palacios, he was born March 24, 1948, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Monico Gatica. Survivors besides his parents include his sisters, Mary Yanez, Dora Lopez, Rosia, Virginia and Janie Gatica, and brothers, Mike, Robert, Tony and Marcos Gatica, all of Palacios.

Graveside services were held in the Palacios Cemetery at 2 p. m. Saturday for Fred Rojas with the Rev. Michael Harrold conducting the service.

A son of Alex Rojas and Katie Ochoa, he was born August 16, 1942 in Palacios.

Besides his parents he is survived by his wife, Olga; son, Oscar; sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Dufren of Galliano, La. and Mrs. Margie Bly of Rosenberg; brothers, Cruz Ochoa, Lupe Rojas, both of Palacios and Rudoph Lopez, with the U. S. Army in Viet Nam.

Monico C. Gatica

Funeral services for Monico C. Gatica, 75, were held March 13 at 2 p. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Gerard Cernoch officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. A rosary was recited March 12 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p. m.

Gatica was born May 4, 1911, the son of Marcus and Simona Camacho Gatica in Matagorda. He died March 10, 1987 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary Yanes of Rockdale, Tx., Dora Lopez of Baytown, Rosie Herrera, Virginia Gillett and Janie Arroyo, all of Palacios; four sons, Mike and Marcus Gatica, both of Palacios, Robert Gatica of Pasadena; three sisters, Blasa Diaz, Paula Rivas and Dominga Solis, all of Palacios; five brothers, Maximo, Leon, Frank, Lino and Herman Gatica, all of Palacios; 28 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

San Juan Gatica, 4, Rites Held Wednesday

Funeral services for San Juan L. Gatica, 4, were held at 9:45 a. m. Wednesday at Rendon Funeral Home and at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Tim Kinnally celebrating the Mass of the Angels. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of Mike Gatica and the late Mrs. Gatica, he was born Nov. 12, 1961 in Galveston. He had lived with his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Miguel Garcia in Palacios. He died Monday afternoon at Wagner General Hospital following a short illness.

Survivors other than the father and maternal grandparents include his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Monico Gatica, great grandmothers, Mrs. Simona Gatica and Mrs. Juanita Llanes, a brother, Mike Jr. and two sisters, Janetta and Mary Linda, all of Palacios.

Victoria Gautreaux

Mrs. Victoria Gautreaux died in this city Friday, December 21, and was buried in the Palacios Cemetery the next day.

Mrs. Gautreaux was born in Terrebonne Parish, La., Nov. 6, 1832. The family came to Texas and settled in Matagorda County in December, 1888, and have been here ever since.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Travis.

The Beacon joins the many friends of the bereaved relatives in extending to them their heartfelt sympathy in their hour of sorrow.

Apolinar R. Gerra, Junior High Janitor, Buried Here Tuesday

Funeral services for Apolinar Reyna Gerra were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, September 24, at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Stone officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born July 22, 1921, a son of Basilo and Melcuedes Reyna Gerra he died Sunday, September 22, in Wagner General Hospital. For the past year he had been employed as janitor at the Palacios Junior High School.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Gerra, mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Gregorio Rivera, of Palacios; two step daughters, Mrs. Albert Rocha of Palacios, Mrs. Roland Hicks of Freeport; two step sons, Gene Nava of Lake Jackson, George Nava, Jr. of Rockport; sister, Mrs. Antonio Martinez of Rosenberg and brother, Camilo Gerra of Palacios.

Mrs. Frances Gerra

Mrs. Frances Gerra died at 7 a. m. Sunday, June 23, in Wagner General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

A native of Palacios, she was born September 17, 1909.

Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Monday at the Rendon Funeral Home chapel.

Funeral services were held at 8:45 a. m. Tuesday at the funeral home followed by a Requiem Mass at 9 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. L. J. Miville officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, George Nava, Jr. of Rockport and Gene Nava of Lake Jackson; a daughter, Mrs. Rowland Hicks, Jr. of Freeport; two brothers, John Peres of Palacios and Tony Peres of Rockport; two sisters, Mrs. Marcellino Abrigo of Palacios and Mrs. John Chupe, Sr. of Rockport and 14 grandchildren.

John Giardo

Private graveside services for John Jean Giardo were held in the Palacios Cemetery Tuesday, September 26, at 3 p. m.

Mr. Giardo was born May 25, 1892, in Switzerland and died at 7:20 p. m. Sunday in a Victoria Hospital. He was retired from the U. S. Army. A veteran of World War I and II, he was a member of the VFW Post in Palacios.

Survivors include two stepsons, Ira Alexander of Victoria and George Alexander of North Carolina.

Missouri Alice Gibson [Alice Missouri Gibson]

Mrs. Missouri Alice Gibson, age 66 years, 3 months and 5 days, died at the residence of her son at 7937 Dayton Ave., Houston, Texas, Saturday morning at 8 a. m. She is survived by her husband, Mr. L. R. Gibson, four daughters, Mrs. Maude Hedigar, Mrs. Dollie Hughes and Mrs. Willie Russell of Houston, and Mrs. Lillian Anderson, of Rowlett, Texas; and six sons, Edd, Chas, Sam and Jess Gibson, of Palacios and E. L. and E. C. Gibson of Houston. The remains were brought to Bay City and prepared for burial by Taylor Bros., and then carried to Palacios. Funeral services were held Sunday morning at 10 a. m. in the chapel of Palacios Funeral Home. Rev. Yates officiating. Burial was in the Palacios cemetery, under direction of Palacios Funeral Home.

Charles Junior “Hoot” Gibson

Funeral services for Charles Junior “Hoot” Gibson were held at 2 p. m. Saturday, Jan. 8, in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of the late Charlie Russell Gibson and Mollie Daniel Phillips Gibson, he was born February 14, 1925 in Ellis County, Texas. A resident of Palacios for 48 years, he was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Navy. He was a former Post Commander of V. F. W. Post 2467, a member of the American Legion and Baptist Church. He died Wednesday, Jan. 5, in the V. A. Hospital in Houston after a lengthy illness.

He is survived by five sisters, Mary Frances Bierbaum and Velma Jones of Houston, Zelma Alice Howell of Austin, Vera Beatrice Collins of Brownwood and Lillian Sewell of Palacios; one brother, Vernon Russell (Duggan) Gibson of Palacios, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral Services For Charles R. Gibson Held Here Wednesday

Funeral services for Charles R. Gibson, 83, were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Wednesday, August 17, at 2 p. m. with Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A retired farmer, he had been a resident of Palacios for the past 38 years. He was born January 20, 1883, in Dallas and died Monday, August 15.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mollie Phillips Gibson of Palacios; five daughters, Lillian Sewell, Palacios; Vera Collins, Quanah, Texas; Zelma Alice Howell, Burnet; Velma Jones and Mary Francis Bierbaum, both of Houston; three sons, Arnold, Vernon and Charles Gibson, Jr., all of Palacios; three sisters, Mrs. Willie Russell and Mrs. Maudie Heidger, Houston and Mrs. Lillian Anderson, Rowlett; one brother, Sam Gibson of Palacios; fifteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and nine step grandchildren.

Services Held For Edward G. Gibson Monday, January 18

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Monday, January 18 at the Palacios Funeral Home for Edward Grafton Gibson, with Rev. L. D. Bonin, of the Full Gospel Tabernacle, officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Gibson, he was born February 14, 1886 in Dallas, Texas, and died Saturday, January 16 at the Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. C. A. Anderson of Dallas, Mrs. J. E. Russell and Mrs. W. E. Hediger of Houston; four brothers, C. R. and Sam Gibson of Palacios, E. C. and E. L. Gibson of Houston.

Mrs. Mollie D. Gibson

Funeral services were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Saturday, May 6, at 2:30 p. m. for Mrs. Mollie Daniel Gibson with the Rev. Leslie Webb conducting the services. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of Will and Addie Cox Phillips, she was born October 22, 1891, in Gustine, Comanche County, Texas. A resident of Palacios for 46 years, she died Thursday, May 4, in Wagner General Hospital.

Survivors include five daughters, Lillian Sewell of Palacios, Vera Collins of Quanah, Zelma Alice Howell of Coleman, Velma Jones and Mary Bierbaum of Houston; three sons, A. W., V. R. and C. J. Gibson all of Palacios; three sisters, Willie Eldredge of Coleman, Alice Phillips of Odessa and Lola Barrington of Jacksboro; one brother, Fred Phillips of Grand Prairie; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Sam Henry Gibson

Sam Henry Gibson, 81, of Palacios, died at Bay City Nursing Home in Bay City. He was a World War II veteran. Survivors include: sister, Mrs. Maude Hedizer of Houston. The funeral will be held at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, July 16 at 11 a. m. with Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment will follow at Palacios Cemetery. Arrangements made with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Senora Russell Gibson

Senora Russell Gibson was born in Grayson County, Texas, September 25, 1859. He passed to his eternal abode on the afternoon of July 14th, 1934, at his home near Palacios, at the age of three score fifteen years.

From Grayson County he moved to Dallas County, where he was married to Miss Missouri Alice Amos, in 1880. She was his constant companion until she went to be with her Heavenly Father, December 24, 1932. To this union were born eleven children, ten of whom survive.

Mr. Gibson moved from Dallas to Mills County and thence to Jackson County in 1900. He has lived in and around Palacios since 1909.

In 1886, at the age of 27 years, he confessed Christ as his Saviour, followed Him in Baptism and became a member of a Missionary Baptist Church.

There survive the following sons and daughters: Charles Russell, Edward Grafton and Sam of Palacios; Mrs. Willie Russell, Mrs. Dollie Hughes and Mrs. Maudie Hediger of Houston; Jesse, Emmett, and Ernest, of Houston; Mrs. Coleman Anderson of Roulette, Texas. There are 34 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren surviving

He shall be greatly missed not only by his children and other relatives but by a host of friends which he had made through the years.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the Palacios Funeral Home, Rev. Geo. D. McClelland officiating. Interment in the Palacios Cemetery.

Vernon “Dugan” Gibson

Funeral services for Vernon “Dugan” Gibson, 74, of Palacios were held Sept. 30, 1994 at the Palacios Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jeff English officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Gibson was born Jan. 3, 1920 to Charlie and Mollie Phillips Gibson. He died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1994.

He was a veteran of World War II; a member of the VFW; and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church.

Mr. Gibson is survived by daughter Penny Evans of Aransas Pass; sisters, Vera Collins of San Antonio and Mary Bierbaum of Houston; and three grandchildren.

Bon L. Gillaspie

Funeral services for Bon L. Gillaspie were held Thurs., July 12, at 10 a. m. at the Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. J. R. Gwin and the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A retired farmer, he was born September 18, 1891 in Hill County, Texas, and had been a resident of Palacios for the past 56 years. He passed away at 3:45 a. m. Tuesday, July 10, in Wagner General Hospital after a long illness.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Ramsey of Palacios; two sons, Otha Lee Gillaspie of Arkansas and Curtis Lillard Gillaspie of New Mexico; one sister, Mrs. Hattie Criss of Hillsboro;  two brothers, Ira Gillaspie of Waco and Charles Gillaspie of Peoria, Texas; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sue Ellen Gillaspie were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday in the Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Lyons, assisted by Rev. Rayford Harris, officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of the Palacios area for 45 years, she was born September 26, 1889 in Navarro County and died Sunday, January 14 in the Wagner General Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, B. L. Gillaspie; one daughter, Mrs. E. O. Ramsey of Palacios; two sons, Otha Lee Gillaspie, Palacios and Leonard Gillaspie of Roswell, N. M. and one brother, Ray Baldridge of Huntsville.

Cora Lee Gillett

Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Lee Gillett were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell conducting the service. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of the late Sherman and Carrie Hardy Hayes, she was born February 22, 1892, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. She had been a resident of Palacios since 1939 and resided at 200 E. University. She passed away December 7 in DeTar Hospital in Victoria, where she recently underwent major surgery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter S. Gillett on January 9, 1971 and a son, Walter Jr. on August 13, 1971.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joyce Rummel of San Antonio; one son, J. B. Gillett of Palacios; one brother, Robert Hayes, of Palacios; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jack Lee Gillett

Funeral services for Jack Lee Gillett, 42, of Palacios, were held July 12, 1992 at Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Cude officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

A lifelong resident of Matagorda County, Mr. Gillett was born July 17, 1949 in Bay City to James B. and Maudell Gillett. He died July 10, 1992 at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Gatica Gillett of Palacios; his mother and stepfather, Maudell and Charles Rummel of Fair Oaks Ranch, Tx.; a daughter, Danielle Gillett of Angleton; two sons, Jack Lee Gillett, Jr. and James B. Gillett, both of Palacios; two brothers, James Stanley Gillett and Edward Eugene Gillett, both of Palacios.

Pallbearers were Michael Gatica, Tony Gatica, David Gillett, Morgan Gillett, Roy Kelly and Reno Yanes.

James Barbour Gillett

Funeral services for James Barbour Gillett were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel Friday, June 20, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A native of Matagorda County and a resident of Palacios for 26 years, he was born September 1, 1916, in Bay City, Texas, the son of Walter Steward Gillett and Cora Lee Hayes Gillett. He was self employed at Gillett Net Shop.

He passed away June 18 at the VA Hospital in Houston after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, Maudie Gillett of Palacios; three sons, James Stanley Gillett of Houston, Jack Lee Gillett and Edward Eugene Gillett, both of Palacios; one sister, Joyce Rummel of San Antonio and two grandchildren.
