James Barbour Gillett

Funeral services for James Barbour Gillett were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel Friday, June 20, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A native of Matagorda County and a resident of Palacios for 26 years, he was born September 1, 1916, in Bay City, Texas, the son of Walter Steward Gillett and Cora Lee Hayes Gillett. He was self employed at Gillett Net Shop.

He passed away June 18 at the VA Hospital in Houston after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, Maudie Gillett of Palacios; three sons, James Stanley Gillett of Houston, Jack Lee Gillett and Edward Eugene Gillett, both of Palacios; one sister, Joyce Rummel of San Antonio and two grandchildren.

Margaret H. Gillett

Funeral services for Margaret H. Gillett, 77, of Palacios were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, July 18, 1995 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Gillett was born September 29, 1917 in Monett, Missouri to Jake George and Margaret Baumann Rice. She died July 16, 1995 at Palacios Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Gillett was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters.

She is preceded in death by her husband Walter S. Gillett, Jr.

Survivors include three daughters Linda Dixon of Austin, Carla “Susie” Addison and Cathy Hunter both of Palacios; one son, Walter Stewart Gillett III of Victoria; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 1004 Magnusson, Palacios, Texas 77465.

Walter S. Gillett

Funeral services for Walter S. Gillett, 84, were held at the Palacios Funeral Chapel Sunday, January 10, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Jim Abernathy officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of James Stanley Gillett and Laura Meta Williams Gillett, he was born in Matagorda, Texas, on December 28, 1886. He worked as Townsite Manager for Texas Gulf Sulphur Company in Old Gulf for 14 years before moving to Palacios in 1940 where he operated a restaurant during World War II. He began farming rice in 1945 and continued this until he retired in 1961. He passed away on January 9, 1971 at Wagner General Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Cora Lea Gillett of Palacios; one daughter, Joyce Rummel of San Antonio; two sons, James Barbour Gillett and Walter Stewart Gillett, Jr. of Palacios; one sister, Ann Cox of Bay City, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Walter S. Gillett, Jr.

Walter Stewart Gillett, Jr. passed away Friday night, August 13, at Wagner General Hospital after a lingering illness.

Rosary was recited at the Palacios Funeral Home Sunday night at 8 o’clock. Requiem Mass was held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Monday at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Armand Florizoone officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of Mrs. Cora Lee Hayes Gillett and the late Walter Stewart Gillett, Sr. who preceded his son in death on January 9 of this year, he was born March 18, 1920 in Bay City. A resident of Palacios since 1939, he was a rice farmer and a commercial fisherman. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Rice Gillett; his mother, both of Palacios; three daughters, Mrs. Dolan (Linda) Dixon of Lake Jackson, Carla Sue and Cathy Gillett of Palacios; one son, Walter Stewart Gillett III, of Victoria; one sister, Mrs. Charles (Joyce) Rummel of San Antonio; one brother, J. B. Gillett of Palacios and two grandchildren.

Emanuel Gillette

Funeral services for Emanuel Gillette, 94, of Palacios, were held Dec. 28 at the Palacios Cemetery with Dr. Bill Thorn officiating.

Gillett died Dec. 27 at Wagner General Hospital.

Born July 21, 1889 in Louisiana, he had lived in Palacios since 1940 and was a self-employed fisherman and a member of the Baptist Church.

He is survived by six daughters: Laura G. Eisman of Port Arthur; Evelyn G. Blanchard of Groves, Tex.; Maude G. Rummel of San Antonio; Leta Bristol of Renton, Wash.; Lois Gilliam of Missouri City, Tex.; and Pam Connis of Palacios; 17 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

A Sudden Death - James M. Gillett

Mr. James M. Gillett, who was employed at the Palacios Hotel, was taken suddenly ill last Friday with an acute attack of pneumonia or a disease of that order and died Friday night. Funeral services were held at the hotel Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Dr. Driskill, followed by interment at the city cemetery.

The deceased was 63 years of age. He and his wife came to Palacios from Austin about a year ago, and have no immediate relatives in this part of the state. He was a most industrious worker and had bought a lot preparatory to building a home. The widow, who is left entirely along was given every needed assistance by citizens of the city.

Palmer Broussard Gillette

Funeral services for Mrs. Palmer Broussard Gillette, were held at 10 o’clock Friday morning, April 4, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. J. R. Gwin and the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. She was interred in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of the late M. Broussard and Alice Lyon Broussard, she was born January 29, 1889 in Lake Arthur, La. She had been a resident of Palacios for 36 years and was a member of the Baptist Church.

She passed away April 3 in Wagner General Hospital where she had been confined for several weeks.

Survivors include her husband, Emanuel E. Gillette of Palacios; six daughters, Evelyn Blanchard of Groves Laura Sinclair of Port Arthur, Maudie Gillette and Pam Connis of Palacios, Leta Bristol of Washington and Lois Ramsey of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Alice Guidry of Lake Arthur, La.

John Giardo

Private graveside services for John Jan Giardo were held in the Palacios Cemetery Tuesday, September 26, at 3 p. m.

Mr. Giardo was born May 25, 1892, in Switzerland and died at 7:20 p. m. Sunday in a Victoria hospital. He was retired from the U. S. Army. A veteran of World War I and II, he was a member of the VFW Post in Palacios.

Survivors include two stepsons, Ira Alexander of Victoria and George Alexander of North Carolina.

Diana Sexton Glenn

Funeral services for Diana Sexton Glenn, 44, of Palacios will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Hollas Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow at Palacios Cemetery.

Glenn died Dec. 12 in an automobile accident. She was born July 3, 1954 in Rockport, TX to the late Melvin Earl and Santos Olivarez.

Glenn is survived by her husband, Larry Glenn of Palacios; daughter, Jennifer Lynn Adams of Bay City; son Gregory Nicholas Adams of Palacios; stepson, Michael Glenn of Palacios; sisters, Cora of Cape Canaveral, Fla. and Linda of Splendora, TX; brothers, Robert Sexton of Sabine Pass, TX. Charles Sexton of Aransas Pass, TX, James Thomason of Ingleside, TX, Leo Thomason of Rockport, Leroy Nelson of Aransas Pass; and Walter Bert of Aransas Pass; and granddaughter, Sara Lynn Adams of Bay City.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Virginia Sue Benner and Audrey Bert.

Arrangements are with Palacios Funeral Home.

Miss Ida Gloor

Burial services were held in the Palacios cemetery at 3 p. m. Saturday for Miss Ida Gloor, with Rev. G. Albers, pastor of the Lutheran church in charge.

Miss Gloor, a sister of Mrs. Ben Ehlers, had spent much time in Palacios during the past few years and had many friends here, with whom we join in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Mrs. Verena Gloor

Mrs. Verena Gloor, who has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ben Ehlers, for several years, passed away early Friday morning after only one day’s illness. The funeral, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Mr. Knoernchild of Vanderbilt, was held from the home of Mr. Ehlers Sunday afternoon, the music being furnished by Mrs. Burton, Mrs. Sisson, Mrs. Arnold, Mr. Burton and Mr. Kirkendall, and the dear body followed by loving relatives and friends, was carried to the beautifully kept little cemetery.

Mrs. Gloor was born in Switzerland, July 17, 1838, being 84 years, 7 months and 15 days old at the time of her death. She with her husband, who preceded her to the Eternal rest by twelve years, came to Texas in 1873 and have resided in the state continuously. To this union were born eight children, all of whom are living and seven of whom were present at the funeral services. One daughter being ill was unable to attend. Nearly three years ago Mrs. Floor had the misfortune to fall and break her hip and from the effects of the injury she never fully recovered. She was able to get about very little except in her wheel-chair, but she was a cheerful sufferer and seldom made complaint. She was an earnest conscientious Christian, a member of the Lutheran church. She was a wise and loving mother, who held the love and esteem of her children to the end and who will sorely grieve for her. During her shut-in years in Palacios she made many friends who ever found delight in her society.

The out-of-town relatives at the funeral were her children, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Gloor, Westhoff; Mr. Herman Gloor and Miss Ida Gloor, Gonzales; Mr. Dave Gloor, Edna; Mrs. Wim. Schendel, Shiner; Rev. and Mrs. C. W. Rische, Page; and her granddaughter, Mrs. Henderson Waelder.

Robert Carroll Godeke

Funeral services for Robert Carroll Godeke, 78, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Sunday at the Palacios Funeral Home in Palacios with Buddy Vela officiating. Burial will be in Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Godeke was born Nov. 14, 1914 in Lynchburg to Robert Theodore and Edna Frances Palmer Godeke and died Oct. 13, 1993 at this residence.

A resident of Schike Point Community since 1975, he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Port Lavaca. He was a member of the Park Place Masonic Lodge #1172 AF and AM and a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Navy.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Godeke of Fullerton, Calif.; a sister, Ann Godeke of Houston; a brother, Kenneth Godeke of Houston; a nephew, Charles W. Cook of Pasadena; two granddaughters, Melyssa Godeke of Clear Lake and Kristian Godeke of Fullerton, Calif. and two great-granddaughters, Loren Ayce Cole and Kimber Lynn Cole, both of Cedar Lake,

He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie Mae Godeke Aug. 15, 1991.

Pallbearers are the members of the Palacios Masonic Lodge.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Graveside Services For Goedrich Infant Held

Graveside services for Gary Joseph, day old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Goedrich, were held at 3 p. m. Friday, December 18, at the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. Rayford Harris officiating.

The infant was born December 16 and died December 17 in Wagner General Hospital.

Besides his parents he is survived by his sister, Rene Inglehart and brother Larry Hebert of Palacios.

Catherine Nevarez “Katy” Gomez

Funeral services for Katy Gomez, 63, were held Nov 14 at 10 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Elree Smithhart officiating. Interment followed at the Palacios Cemetery. A rosary was recited at 7 p. m. Sunday at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Gomez was born March 5, 1925 in Goliad, the daughter of Catarino and Lorenza Alarcon Nevarez. She died Nov. 10, 1988 at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Mrs. Gomez is survived by her husband, Jesse Gomez of Palacios; one daughter, Kay Lawson of Palacios; one son, Rick Garza of Dallas; one sister, Luz Benevidez of Houston; one brother, Elias Nevarez of Robstown; and grandchildren, Kathy and Ronny Lawson and Denise and Ricky Garza.

Pallbearers were Pete Estrello, Cesario Garza, Gerald Wells, Robert Arias, Johnny Flores, and Albert Garza.

Jesse Gomez

Funeral services for Jesse Gomez, 61, of Palacios, were held Nov. 26 at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Pham officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. A rosary was recited Nov. 25 at 7 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Gomez was born June 4, 1927 in Bay City, the son of Gomecindo and Apolinar Rocha Gomez and died Nov. 25, 1988 at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Survivors include three daughters, Kay Lawson of Palacios, Katie Pena of Bay City and Pauline Gomez of Slidell, Louisiana; three sons, Rick Garza of Dallas, Gomecindo Garza and Hector Garza, both of Houston; two sisters, Ofelia Escobar and Esperanza Flores, both of Bay City; one brother, Robert Arias of Bay City; and four grandchildren, Kathy and Ronny Lawson, and Denise and Ricky Garza.

Pallbearers were David Aparicio, John Reyna, John Flores, Ruben Escobar, Romola Garcia and Peter Estrello. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Arias, and Jesse Gomez.

Victoria "Nena" Elena Gomez

PALACIOS - Victoria "Nena" Elena Gomez, 3, of Palacios, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007. She was born July 31, 2004, in Port Lavaca. She was a Catholic.

She is survived by her parents, Erica Rodriguez of Houston and Jose Angel Gomez of Palacios; brother, Emilio Alberto Martinez of Houston; grandparents, Juanita Ramos, Rosa Gomez Gutierrez, and Martin Gomez, all of Palacios; great-grandparents, Consuelo Solis Bautista and Humberto Bautista, both of Palacios, Josefina Carmona and Jesus Gutierrez, both of Mexico City, Mexico, and Jose Gomez and Angela Cruz, both of Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. today at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church at 1004 Magnusson in Palacios. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Burial will follow at Palacios Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jose Angel Gomez, Jose Venegas, Jesus Narvaez, and Luis Alberto Martinez.

Funeral Services For Antonio R. Gonzales Held Here Tuesday

Rosary was recited in the Palacios Funeral Home at 8 p. m. Monday and Requiem Mass was held in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 9 a. m. Tuesday, September 24 for Antonio R. Gonzales, who died Sunday, September 22 in the Texas State Hospital in San Antonio.

The Rev. Michael Harrold and Rev. V. J. Bily officiated and burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios for 42 years, he was born April 7, 1895 in Carmen Campeche, Mexico a son of Louis R. and Felipa Gonzales.

He is survived by his wife Natalia Gonzales, two daughter, Mrs. Leo Sanchez and Mrs. Marina Garcia; three sons, Augustine, Ralph and Tony Gonzales, all of Palacios.

Augustine G. Gonzales

Funeral services for Augustine G. Gonzales, 83, of Palacios were held Monday, July 17, 2000 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. He died July 14.

A native of Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico, he was born Aug. 28, 1916 to the late Antonio and Natalia Gomez Gonzales. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in U. S. Army, and was a member of the Palacios VFW.

Survivors include the widow, Josephine Ottino Gonzales; three daughters, Stella Carrizal, Rosemary Gonzales and Lynda Garcia, all of Houston; a son, Augustine Gonzales, Jr. of Houston; one sister, Felipa Sanchez of Palacios; one brother, Tony Gonzales of Palacios; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Anthony Gonzales; two sisters, Marinia Garcia and Natalia Gonzales; and one brother, Ralph Gonzales.

Belinda Gonzales

Graveside services for Belinda, infant daughter of Juan and Lucy Gonzales, were held at 9 a. m. Sunday, May 8, in the Palacios Cemetery with Father Brian Crookes officiating.

Born May 3, in Wagner General Hospital, she passed away Saturday, May 7 in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Cayetano Gonzales

Cayetano Gonzales, 11 year old son of Dolorez Gonzales, died in the Bay City hospital Thursday night of injuries received that afternoon from the explosion of a giant fire cracker, which he had picked up some where on the bay shore. When he attempted to light it with a match it exploded, mangling his hand and causing other injuries about the face and head.

After being given first aid treatment by a local physician he was taken in the ambulance from the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home to Bay City where he was given every attention and care but was unable to survive the loss of blood and severe shock he had suffered.

The body was brought back here, taken to the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home and prepared for burial. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church Friday, conducted by Father Gorek, and burial made in the Palacios Cemetery.
