Mrs. Harriman Dead

Mrs. Harriman, wife of W. F. Harriman, died at her home in the early hours of Tuesday morning after an illness extending over several months. Mrs. Harriman has been a patient sufferer and death came as a blessed release. The obituary will be given next week.

Palacios Beacon, February 28, 1924

Ella P. Harriman

After weary months of suffering Mrs. W. F. Harriman passed to her reward early Tuesday morning, February 26, 1924. While her demise was not unexpected it has left an aching void in the hearts of the community where she has lived and loved and labored for the past thirteen years. She was so thoroughly alive, so understandingly sympathetic, so willing to share her neighbors' burdens that none knew her but to love. She was so patient with the shortcomings of others and so patient in her illness. Her sister, Mrs. Owens, and her son, Charles, who were devotion to her, and had almost the entire care of her during the last months and say she never uttered one querulous or impatient word but always showed appreciation of their every effort to make her more comfortable.

Until her death failed she taught a class of married ladies in the Presbyterian Sunday school and never was there a better attended class, nor one where more love and respect was felt for the teacher who taught love, patience, hope, faith, charity. Her trust in her Heavenly Father was supreme and was reflected in her faith and trust she reposed in her fellowman. All with whom she was associated go on their way better and happier for being able to say, "She was my friend." As she lay in her last sleep looking so rested and happy all knew she had been a good woman. To know her was a benediction.

Ella P. Mitchell was born in Illinois, June 20, 1845. Her early life was spent in Wisconsin, where she trudged miles to attend Sunday School. While still a young girl the family moved to Iowa, where she attended the Cedar Valley Seminary and later taught school. in 1865 she was married to Walter F. Harriman, the young couple building their home nest in a little log cabin that has always been dear to them. To this union were born three sons--John, Will and Charles. The two older boys, both physicians, occupying responsible positions, were cut off in the prime of manhood. Charles lives at home, a devoted son. Beside the aged husband and the son, there are three sisters, Mrs. Rich, of Kansas City; Mrs. Owens, of Port Arthur, and Miss Mitchell, of Palacios. There are five grandchildren, Mrs. Jones in Iowa, Loretta Harriman and Evelyn Harriman, of Chicago; John Harriman, of St. Louis and Walter F. Harriman, Jr., who is a medical student in his senior year at the State University of Pennsylvania.

The funeral services conducted by her pastor, Rev. Mr. Gillespie were held at the home Wednesday afternoon and the tired body tenderly laid away in the Palacios cemetery.
