Child Fatally Injured on Highway Tuesday - Vonie Harvey

Vonie Harvey was fatally injured when struck by a car on the highway near the west side of the city limits Tuesday afternoon. The child, accompanied by his father and brother, was going home from school. He, with some other children were playing along the highway, and Vonie would run onto the pavement. His brother pulled him off and cautioned him about the danger, but he continued his play and picked up a rock to throw at the car that had just passed him and probably never saw the car just behind, driven by Ira Richards, who could not see him until he was almost upon him, hitting him before he could come to a stop. There were a number of cars coming toward town at the time and Mr. Richards had to drive off the pavement before he stopped the car, after knocking the child to the pavement. He picked him up, put him in his car and brought him to Dr. Wagner’s office, but the skull had been crushed and he did not regain consciousness. The father and brother, as well as a number of other pedestrians, witnessed the tragedy and all were of the opinion that it was one of those unavoidable accidents.

Mr. Richards is a very careful driver and was not driving fast at the time, and probably would not have hit the child if the car in front had not obstructed his view.

Vonie is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Harvey and besides the grief stricken parents, he is survived by five brothers and one sister. The family moved here from Citrus Grove in January and is now located on Mrs. John T. Price’s farm west of town.

The body was prepared for burial by the Duffy-Rittenhouse Undertaking Co.

Funeral services were held at the grave at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Eld. C. F Conner and interment made in the Palacios cemetery.
