Sarah Hernandez

Funeral services for Sarah Hernandez, 47, were held Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jessie T. Jones officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Ms. Hernandez was born April 10, 1934 in Vanderbilt and died Dec. 4 at Wagner General Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Palacios and a member of the Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruby Garcia; one sister, Anita Hernandez; two brothers, Daniel Hernandez and Elias Diaz, all of Palacios; and four grandchildren.

Ruth Naomi Hetchler

Services were held for Mrs. Ruth Naomi Hetchler, 83, of Longivew, 10 a. m. today (Thursday) at Palacios Funeral Home.

Officiating at the services was the Rev. J. R. Gwin.

Hetchler died August 3, 1982 at a Longview Hospital.

Survivors include: daughter, Gloria L. Hetchler of Longview; step-daughters, Alice Gaston and Weilma High both of Longview; brother, Elmer Abrahamson; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.

Burial will follow services at Palacios Cemetery.

Pallbearers include nephews, Robert, Dennis, Herbert, Carroll, Paul and Allen Abraham.

Bulah Smith Hicks

Mrs. Beulah [Bulah] Smith Hicks, who died at her home in this city Thursday, April 10, 1947, was born June 16, 1879. In the year of 1895 she came here from Dallas and on June 7, was married to John S. Hicks in the Seaside Inn at Port Lavaca. Matagorda County became their home and the great part was spent in Palacios where they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in June 1945 with a family reunion attended by their children, grand-children and great-grandchildren.

Survivors are her husband, John S. Hicks, five daughters, Mrs. Mollie Cox, Palacios, Mrs. Mattie Kerr, Fort Worth; Mrs. Grace Stapleton, Pierce; Mrs. Iva Chupie, Rockport; Mrs. Pearl Miller, Houston, and two sons, Elmer Hicks, Palacios, and George Hicks, Fort Worth, also three sisters and one brother, besides a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Palacios Funeral Home conducted by Rayford B. Harris. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Clara Louise Hicks

Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Louise Hicks were held Monday, June 21, at 3 o’clock in the afternoon at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A life long resident of Palacios, she was born here February 21, 1913, a daughter of Elsie Schulke Mosier and the late August Mosier. She died Friday, June 18, in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston after a lengthy illness.

She is survived by her husband, Roland Hicks of Palacios; one son, Roland Hicks, Jr. of Freeport; her mother, one sister, Mrs. Anna Mae Cartwright; three brothers, Rudolph and Edwin Mosier, all of Palacios  and August Mosier of Aransas Pass.

George W. Hicks, Native Of County, Buried Here Tuesday

George W. Hicks, a native of Matagorda County, died Monday February 18, in the nursing home in Bay City.

Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Tuesday, February 19, at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

He was born November 27, 1880 in Ashby, a son of the late Capt. and Mrs. George Hicks.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ruby McCoy of Galveston, three sons, Burton and Eugene Hicks of Galveston and Roland Hicks of Palacios and one sister, Mrs. P. H. Singer of Palacios.

John S. Hicks

Funeral services were held for John S. Hicks at the Palacios Funeral Home September 21 and were conducted by the Rev. Rayford B. Harris. Burial was at the Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Hicks was born at old Palacios, which is now known as Palacios Point, on May 29, 1872. While still a small child, he moved to the Ashby community where he lived until he moved to Palacios in 1906.

In 1894, he married Miss Bulah Smith and to this union seven children were born. He served as one of the first city marshals of Palacios for several years before selling his home in town and moving to the country where he farmed and ranched.

After the death of his wife in 1948, he worked for several cattlemen here and near Blessing until a year ago. At this time he moved back to Palacios and stayed with his daughter, Mrs. Mollie Cox, until his death on September 20.

Mr. Hicks is survived by five daughters and two sons. The daughters are: Mrs. Mollie Cox of Palacios, Mrs. Mattie Poles of Fort Worth, Mrs. Grace Stapleton of El Campo, Mrs. Adelaide Chupe of Rockport, and Mrs. Pearl Miller of Houston. The sons are George Hicks of Fort Worth and Elmer Hicks of Palacios.

He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Singer and Mrs. Mary Neff, both of Palacios, and Mrs. Bettie Smith of Bandera; a brother, George Smith of Palacios; 18 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

Roland Hicks Sr.

Funeral services for Roland “Dutchie” George Hicks, Sr., 82, were held March 28 at 10 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scot Edmondson officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Hicks, a World War I army veteran, was born Sept. 26, 1903 in Port Lavaca and died March 26, 1986 at Wagner General Hospital. He was the son of George W. and Danya Gaton Hicks.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Virginia and Roland George Hicks, Jr. of Freeport; three granddaughters, Karen Ann Hicks of College Station, Carolyn Walkuski of Angleton and Katheleen Laving of Lake Jackson; and five great grandchildren.

Effie Mae Higdon

Effie Mae Higdon, 80, of Houston, passed away September 25 in Jacinto City. Survivors include: niece, Mrs. Artic Johnson of Houston; great niece and nephew-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Fowler and their son James Jr. of Houston; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church of Palacios September 30 at 11:00 a. m. with Rev. Barry Bauerschlag officiating. Interment will follow at Palacios Cemetery. Arrangements with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Adolph H. Highberg

Funeral services for Adolph Highberg were held at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A life-long resident of Palacios, he was born here February 27, 1905, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nels Parson Highberg. He passed away at his residence at 402 Rorem Wednesday, September 30.

Survivors include two daughters, Loranie and Vivian Highberg of Okeechobee, Fla.; five sons, Sgt. Eddie Simmons, serving with the Army in the Panama Canal Zone, Adolph Jr., Allen and Nels Highberg of Okeechobee, Fla. and Sp. 4/C John Highberg, serving in the Army in Germany; five sisters, Mrs. Hannah Jackson and Mrs. Anna Padgett of Palacios; Mrs. Mary Stuckey and Mrs. Hulda McCarry of Port Arthur; Mrs. Nellie Laneir of Bassinger, Fla; five brothers, James of Lolita, Nels in Pennsylvania, Haywood of Point Comfort, John of Winnie, and Paul of Karnes City; and three grandchildren.

Final Rites Held For Nels P. Highberg, 82; Was Pioneer Settler

Funeral services for Nels Person Highberg were held Thursday, March 13, at 3:30 p. m. from the First Methodist Church with the Rev. John Fluth officiating.

Born on June 23, 1875 in Sweden, he came to this country in 1887, moving to Palacios in 1896, where he farmed until his retirement in 1937. He was married to Mary Alinda Le Compte in June 1900. He passed away March 12 at 12:45 p. m. in Bay View General Hospital.

He was an active member of the Methodist Church. Well loved by children, they affectionately called him “Grandpa.:” He never missed a family party or reunion.

He is survived by his widow, Mary, Mary, five daughters, Mrs. Mary Stuckey, Mrs. Hulda McCarry of Port Arthur, Mrs. Nelly Thompson of Bassinger, Florida, Mrs. Hannah Jackson and Mrs. Annie Padgett of Palacios; six sons, Adolph, Paul, Haywood of Palacios, Nels Jr. of Galveston, James of Vanderbilt and John of Port Arthur; one sister, Maria Swenson of Oroke, Sweden. Also 40 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

Six grandsons were pallbearers, Clarence Padgett Jr., Willie Ryman Jr., William Stuckey Jr., Nels Highberg III, Charles Highberg and Wilbur Maples.

Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Final Rites Held For Area’s Oldest Resident, Mrs. Olinda Highberg

Funeral services for Mrs. Olinda Mary Highberg one of the oldest residents of Palacios having lived here 76 years, will be held at the First Methodist Church, Thursday, September 17, at 3 p. m. with the Rev. John Berkley officiating. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of Jack and Marie Jane Gautreaux Le Compte, she was born May 17, 1884, in Terrebone Parish, Louisiana. She died Tuesday, September 15 at Wagner General Hospital.

She is survived by five daughters, Hannah Jackson and Annie Belle Padgett of Palacios; Mary J. Stuckey and Hulda McCarry of Port Arthur; and Nelly May Thompson of Bassinger, Fla.; six sons, Adolph H., Bassinger, Fla.; James L., La Ward; Haywood, Point Comfort; John R., Winnie; Paul A., Palacios and Nels P. Jr. of East Petersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Eva R. Leadbetter, Houston and Mrs. Alpha Katherine Ryman, Palacios; three brothers, Albert Le Compte, El Campo; Joseph M. Le Compte, Matagorda and Paul M. Le Compte, Bay City and many grandchildren.

Mrs. Violet Highberg

Mrs. Violet Lorene Highberg passed away Friday and was buried Saturday in the Palacios cemetery following services at the Palacios Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. A. F. McGuffey, of the Nazarene Church.

She is survived by her husband, J. l. Highberg, two daughters, Nora Jean and Patricia, two sons, James Wyatt and Charles Frederick Highberg, also her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F Bornaman, one sister, Mrs. L. H. Bornaman, one sister, Mrs. L. H. Highberg and two brothers, Wyatt and Richard Bornaman, all of Palacios.

Jack Reagan Hill

Jack Reagan, 10-day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Hill, died in the hospital in Bay City, Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. The remains were brought here and after a short service at the grave conducted by Rev. George D. McClelland, were interred in the Palacios cemetery. The bereaved parents, sister, brother and other relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.

Deputy Sheriff Rodriguez Out On Bond Following Shooting Of John [Joe] Hill Here Sunday P. M.

John [Joe] Allen Hill died Sunday night at 9:15 p. m. from gunshot wounds inflicted by Juan Rodriguez, a deputy sheriff.

An argument between Hill and W. E. Attaway on the Main Street of Palacios Sunday afternoon when Attaway was brutally beaten, preceeded the shooting.

In resisting arrest following the fracas was when Hill was shot twice after knocking down Rodriguez and another deputy in front of the theatre at about 3:30 p. m.

He was taken to the hospital but died on the operating table at 9:15 from loss of blood.

Both Attaway and Hill were employed as construction workers in Port Lavaca.

An examining trial, held in Bay City Monday afternoon with Justice of the Peace W. T. Cox presiding, resulted in Rodriguez being charged with the murder of John Hill and was released on $1,500 bond. He was bound over to the December term of the grand jury.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock in the First Baptist Church for Joe Allen Hill, conducted by Rev. Rayford B. Harris. Burial was made in the Palacios Cemetery under the direction of the Palacios Funeral Home.

Joe Allen Hill was born in Caddo, Okla., December 27, 1909, and passed away at Bayview General Hospital, Palacios, Texas, September 25, 1949, at 9:15 p. m.

He came to Texas in 1941 and was married to Marjory Cravay, December 6, 1943, at Houston, Texas. He had lived in this community four months.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Joe A. Hill, of Palacios; four brothers, Luther Hill of Dallas, Arthur and W. L. Hill of Oklahoma City, Okla., Herschel Hill of Tulsa, Okla., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Ratliff of Dallas, Texas.

Robert W. Hill

Funeral services for Robert W. Hill, 65, of Palacios are scheduled for 3 p. m. Thursday at Palacios Faith Center. Burial will follow in Palacios Cemetery, Palacios.

Mr. Hill was born Dec. 25, 1927 in Smyrna, S. C. to William E. and Edith Castles Hill and died Aug. 2 in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

He was a resident of Palacios for 25 years, moving to that community from Houston. Mr. Hill was a member of the CB Radio Club and the K. S. O. Club.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hill of Palacios; three daughters, Holly Aday of Florida, and Cathy Walrath and Lynn Mullis, both of North Carolina; four sons, William W. Cude and Thomas E. Cude, both of Markham, Stephen F. Cude of North Carolina, and Michael R. Hill of New Caney; a sister, Sarah Hughes of North Carolina.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Palacios.

Paul Charles Himes

Funeral services for Paul Charles Himes were held at 10 a. m. Saturday, February 10, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Brian Crookes officiating.

Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Friday in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel.

Son of Robert and Lucille Studebaker Himes, he was born March 15, 1954 in Chicago, Ill. A resident of Palacios for three years, he was a concrete foreman at the South Texas Project. He was shot and killed Wednesday night in Matagorda.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Rose Rodriquez Himes of Palacios; his parents of Wilmington, Ill., one sister, Loretta Rerdanez of Gardner, Ill. and one brother, Robert J. Himes of Wilmington, Ill.

Mrs. Hix Services Are Held Sunday

Palacios—Florine Hix, 53, passed away Saturday, June 21, at 9:30 a. m. at her home in Palacios.

She was born in Tupelo, Miss. on September 3, 1904, and married Lester Martin HIx on November 17, 1923.

Survivors are her husband, two sons, L. L. Hix and R. W. Hix, four grandchildren of Palacios; her father, A. F. Moore of Amarillo, Texas, and one brother, T. A. Moore of Petersburg, Texas.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 5:30 p. m. from the Palacios Funeral Home, Rev. Rayford Harris of the First Baptist Church officiated.

Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Lesley Martin Hix

Graveside services for Lesley Martin Hix were conducted by Rev. Leon Maxwell in the Palacios Cemetery Monday afternoon, March 8, at 4 p. m.

A former resident of Palacios and employee of Salt Dome, he was born July 15, 1902 and died Saturday, March 6, in the Palestine Nursing Center in Palestine.

Funeral services were held in Palestine at 9 a. m. Monday and the body brought to Palacios for interment.

Dora Daisey Hockey

Miss Dora Daisey Hockey passed away in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City Tuesday, August 18, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 20, at 3 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Irving King, Jr. officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios for many years, she was born September 26, 1886 in White City, Kansas to Marion Abbott and M. Hockey.

She is survived by her sister, Ethel E. Hockey and brother, Gilbert Hockey, both of Palacios.

Rev. Fluth Holds Services Tuesday For Ernest Hockey

Funeral services were conducted here at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday at the Taylor brothers Funeral Home for Ernest Hockey, who died here at his sisters’ residence Sunday.

Rev. John Fluth of the First Methodist Church conducted the services. Hockey, who was 85 years old at the time of his death, was buried in the Palacios Cemetery.

Hockey is survived by two sisters, Dora and Ethel Hockey of Palacios, and two brothers, Gilbert and Ralph, also of Palacios.

Ethel Ernestine Hockey

Funeral services for Miss Ethel Ernestine Hockey were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Saturday, May 18, at 2:30 p. m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of the late Marian Abbott Hockey and Matthew Robert Hockey, she was born June 8, 1890 in White City, Kansas. The family moved to Palacios in 1913 where she resided until after the death of her brother, Gilbert Hockey, on January 12 of this year. Due to ill health she went to Pecos where she was staying with a nephew, W. B. Jenson. She passed away there Wednesday, Mary 15. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She is survived by four nephews, Ralph Hockey, Jr. of Rincon, N. Mex., Billy Hockey of Edinburg, W. B. Jenson and Cecil R. Jenson of Pecos; five nieces, Margaret Bolander and Constance Carson of El Paso, Edith Jenson of Pecos, Ruth Mount of El Campo and Clara Joe Franks of Little Rock, Ark.
