Two Men Drown as Car Plunges Off Causeway
Driver of Sedan Escapes Death When He Is Rescued by Shrimp Boat Near Galveston

Galveston, March 8.—Two Galveston men were drowned about 1 o’clock this morning and a third narrowly escaped the same fate when the sedan in which they were riding plunged off Galveston causeway into a 20-foot channel running under a lift-bridge.

Joe Denke, 26, a Galveston machinist and Jesse Heinemann, 26, who recently came here from Palacios were drowned in the car. Fred Bates, proprietor of a lunch stand here, who was driving, managed to get out and was picked up by a shrimp boat.

The men were enroute from Galveston. Bates said he did not see that the liftbridge was raised as he approached. It was up to permit passage of the shrimp boat and the sedan plunged off the causeway into midchannel, narrowly missing the craft. Bates managed to open the car door on his side and get free, but almost drowned before men on the boat dragged him aboard.

Coast guardsman arrived soon after in a patrol launch. Transferring to the smaller shrimp boat, they managed to locate the car and about two hours after the accident a wrecker on the liftbridge was able to draw it above water. Edward Kriger of Galveston, a spectator, went down to the suspended car and with the assistance of coast guardsmen was able to get the bodies of the two men on the shrimp boat. Both apparently were drowned. Only minor injuries were found on their bodies.

Funeral services for Denke will be held here tomorrow afternoon. The body of Heinemann was sent to Palacios this afternoon. The automobile was lowered after the bodies were recovered this morning and was raised to the bridge about noon today.
