Accidental Drowning Is Verdict Reached in Local Barber’s Death – James F. Morris

Monday about noon news was brought to Palacios that a body of a man had been found by a party of fishermen at Wells Point, about 7 miles west and south of Palacios on the Sartwelle Ranch.

Local and County Officers were immediately notified and went out to the spot, where the body was identified as G. S. [James F.] Morris, a barber who came here some months ago, and had been employed at the Wright Barber Shop the past few weeks.

Morris was last seen Wednesday night, September 20, on the pavilion pier, and it is the supposition he fell off while asleep.

At an inquest held, no evidence of foul play was found and a verdict rendered of death by accidental drowning. As the body was so badly decomposed burial was made that night in the Palacios Cemetery, under the direction of the Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home.

Officers and friends of the dead man went to his room and looked over his belongings, but no trace of relatives could be found.

Mrs. R. H. Morrow Died Last Sunday

Mrs. Maggie C. Morrow, wife of Mr. Ralph Morrow, prominent stockman of the Lolita section, passed away at her house Sunday, Nov. 5th, 1950, following a protracted illness caused by heart trouble.

The funeral service was conducted in the Palacios Presbyterian Church by her pastor, Rev. Pat Marse, assisted by the Palacios Presbyterian pastor, Rev. Mr. Price, Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock.

The remains were laid to rest in the Palacios Cemetery besides those of her parents and other loved ones.

Mrs. Maggie Clement was born August 30, 1868, at Velasco, Texas, the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Clement, pioneers in this section of South Texas. Mrs. Morrow moved to Old Indianola with her parents when a small child. The trip from Velasco to Indianola was made by boat and the owner and captain of the boat was her father. From Indianola the family moved to Port Lavaca. In 1897, the subject of this sketch was united in marriage to Mr. Ralph H. Morrow, a prominent young stockman of Refugio County. They resided on their ranch on the San Antonio River in Refugio County until 1923. That year Mr. and Mrs. Morrow and their only child, Mary, moved to their present ranch home just north of Lolita, Jackson County. The daughter, now deceased, married Mr. William Clement of Palacios, who with two sons, Ralph, 16 and Wallace, 14 survive.

Mrs. Morrow's life was typical of the pioneer women of that era. She was a devout Christian, a life long member of the Presbyterian Church. Age and the resultant infirmities did not curtail her church work and interest in religious matters. The Morrow home was always a Christian home and a home that extended at all times a warm welcome to friends and neighbors. In Mrs. Morrow's passing a great loss has been sustained by her family, relatives, friends and this entire section of South Texas.

She is survived by her husband and two grandsons, four sisters, Mrs. Dickey of San Antonio and Misses Edith, Mattie and Rowena Clement of Lolita, and two brothers, Messrs. P. W. Clement of Edna and William Clement of Palacios.

Of the seven children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Clement, Mrs. Morrow was the first to pass on, a remarkable family record.

To all those who mourn the passing of this good woman the herald extends heartfelt sympathy.
