John Ralston Passes

On Friday night at an early hour, Mr. John Ralston, after many months of suffering, quietly and peacefully passed to his final home, surrounded by those who had tenderly cared for him during his long illness. Just before the end, he took the hand of Mr. A. R. Hillyer, possibly his best loved friend, and while he could not speak he seemed to want to say good bye. Mr. Hillyer quietly assured him that all would soon be over, and in a few moments the spirit took its flight unto God who gave it. As Mr. Ralston was held in high esteem by all our citizens, the news was soon carried to all parts of the city.

By special request of his sister, Mrs. I. M. Linville, Dr. T. F. Driskill was requested to conduct the Christian funeral service, and the Masonic Lodge was requested to conduct their beautiful service, all of which took place at the cemetery at 2:30 p. m. Saturday. Dr. Driskill read the 24th chapter of the Psalms, verses 1 to 5, also the 90th Psalm, verses 1 to 12, also the story of the “Good Samaritan,” as given in the 10th chapter of Luke, besides other scriptural references concerning the “Lion of the Tribe of Judah,” which were choice passages that the Doctor had gathered in quiet conversation with Mr. Ralston during his long acquaintance with him.

Palacios held the deceased in such esteem that all the business houses closed during the funeral service.

The following notes prepared by Mrs. D. Ruthven, will give the salient facts of the life of this valuable citizen:--

John Ralston was born in Auburn, Indiana, December 14, 1861. He moved to Aberdeen, Mississippi at a tender age, when at the close of the Civil War financial misfortune overtook his father. When about sixteen years of age, he moved to Waxahachie, Texas, with his two older brothers and at this place he was in business many years. He was a charter member of I. O. O. F. of Waxahachie No. 80, and remained a faithful member until the end. He enlisted for Spanish American War service in January, 1898, and served for nine months in the Regimental Band. A few years later he received his degrees In Masonry, being a member of Palacios Masonic Lodge No. 990. One of his greatest pleasures was his thorough study of Masonic work.

With his mother, he moved to Palacios twenty-three years ago. His mother passed away four years later and since then he has lived alone, always a good neighbor and citizen. He has served at different times as alderman and Justice of the Peace. Always tried to live up to the motto of “doing unto others as he would have them do unto him.
During his illness of six months he has been tenderly card for by his only sister and members of the family. He is survived by two brothers, F. H. Ralston, of Waxahachie, James Ralston, of Iowa Park, and a sister, Mrs. I. M. Linville, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Palacios has lost a citizen that never failed it in any worthy civic undertaking. His loved one will miss him more than pen can tell. The Masons have lost a brother whose place will be hard to fill, yet this is the end of man.

At the close of this part of the funeral service, Rev. Ray of the First Baptist Church offered a heart touching prayer, then the Masonic order took charge under the leadership of Mr. Joe B. Feather and, without error, carried out its most beautiful burial service.

May our Father, through Christ our Redeemer, bless his Fraternal brother who tenderly cared for him in his last hours, and his devoted sister, who spared no pains in caring for his every want. These blessings are also asked in behalf of the dear brothers who could not be here.

Car Wreck Claims Life of Bay City Woman Friday
By Shelly Gormey – Tribune Managing Editor

Yvonne Ann Ramirez, 31, of Bay City, was killed in a car wreck on FM 2668 en route to attend the Palacios High School graduation ceremony Friday night.

Ramirez was southbound on FM 2668 just north of the Matagorda County Fairgrounds at about 6:46 p. m. Friday when her 1990 Acura sedan was struck by another vehicle, causing her car to go off the road and hit a tree, said Department of Public Safety officials. The other vehicle, also southbound, was a 2003 Hyundai drive by Tomas Naranjo Jr., 18, who was on his way to his own graduation at Bay City High School, said investigating DPS Trooper John Kopacz.

Naranjo’s vehicle had passed another car then slid on the wet shoulder of the road after pulling in behind Ramirez’ vehicle, the state trooper said.

When he attempted to swerve back on the road, he struck Ramirez’ car, sending it off the road and into a tree,Kopacz said.

Ramirez was taken to Matagorda General Hospital where she was pronounced dead just after 8 p. m. Friday.

Ramirez’ 13-year-old brother, who was a passenger in her car, was taken by Life Flight to Hermann Hospital in Houston where he was treated and released, reports show.

Naranjo was not injured.

The accident is still under investigation.
