Manuel F. Rivas

Funeral services for Manuel F. Rivas, 72 of Aransas Pass, were held Dec. 3 at 10 a. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Rivas, a World War II Army veteran, was born August 25 1913 in Matagorda and died Dec. 1, 1985 at Wagner General Hospital. He was a member of the V. F. W. and was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Rose Rivas of Aransas Pass, Blanch England of California and Cynthia Rivas of Aransas Pass; four sons, Manuel R. Rivas and Teles Rivas of Aransas Pass, Gilbert Rivas of Port Lavaca and Martin Rivas, also of Aransas Pass; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Young of Kerrville and 14 grandchildren.

Telesforo Flores Rivas

Telesforo Flores Rivas, a resident of Palacios for 60 years, died at his residence at 808 Lucas Tuesday, Oct. 31, of a heart attack.

A private family rosary was held at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel at 5:30 p. m. Wednesday and a prayer service was held in the chapel at 7:30 p. m.

Funeral services were held in the chapel at 2 p. m. Thursday with the Rev. Sostenes Infante officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of Prudencio and Rosa Flores Rivas, he was born Nov. 3, 1909 in Bay City.

Survivors include his wife, Pola Rivas of Palacios; seven daughters, Betty Sampogna, Esther Rodriquez, Jamie Llanes and Eva Garcia of Houston, Alice Solis of San Antonio, Minnie Diaz of Beeville and Emma Longoria of Palacios; one son, Daniel Rivas of Palacios; one sister, Ruby Young of Kerrville; two brothers, Pete Martinez of Seguin and Manuel Rivas of Port Lavaca; 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Gregorio Sandival Rivera

Funeral services for Gregorio Sandival Rivera, 85, were held at 10 a. m. Tuesday, September 13, at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leslie E. Webb officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Monday at the chapel.

Born in Mexico, he died Sunday at Wagner General Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Melquiades Rivera and a daughter Antonia Martinez.

Jimmie J. Rivera

Palacios—Jimmie John Rivera, 29, of Palacios, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005.

He was born July 29, 1975, in Bay City to Arturo Sr. and Rosie Garcia Rivera of Palacios. He was a Catholic.

Survivors: sisters, Carmen Rivera, Cindy Rubio, Tammy Gonzalez, and Dora Rivera, all of Palacios, and Susie Barajas of Los Angeles; and brothers, Arthur Rivera III, Eddie Rivera and Michael Rivera, all of Palacios.

Visitation will begin 5 p. m. Sunday at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in Palacios.

A rosary will be recited 7 p. m. Sunday at the church.

Services will be 10 a. m. Monday at the church, the Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating.

Mrs. Julia R. Rivera Dies In Port Lavaca Buried Here Monday

Mrs. Julia Rocha Rivera, 43, of Palacios, died Saturday, Dec. 5 at 11:45 p. m. at Champ Traylor Memorial Hospital in Port Lavaca following an extended illness.

Mrs. Rivera was born in Palacios in 1920 and was a life long resident. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Funeral services were held at 8:45 a. m. Monday at Rendon Funeral Chapel, Port Lavaca followed by a Requiem Mass at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios with Rev. Michael Harrold officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Lee Rivera; eight sons, Frank Sanchez, Domingo Sanchez, Ernest, Arthur, Joe, Jimmy, Robert Lee and Lupe Rivera; two daughters, Molly Sanchez and Josephine Rivera; two brothers, Jonquin Rocha, Felipe Rocha; three sisters, Mrs. Julio Tobias, Mrs. Agapito Morales, all of Palacios; Mrs. Jose Velasquez of Port Lavaca and one grandson.

Richard Rivera

PALACIOS [Matagorda County, Texas] - Richard Rivera, 51, of Palacios, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007. He was born May 1, 1956, in Cameron County, to the late Dora Cervantez and Arturo Rivera Sr. He was a member of The Living Word Church. He was raised by his late grandparents, Fred and Bessie Gatica Diaz.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Cruz Rivera; daughters, Andrea Le, Dolores Torres, and Paula Manrriquez, all of Palacios; sons, Mario Manrriquez and Simon Rivera, both of Palacios; brothers, Arturo Rivera Jr., Jesse Guillen, and Anthony Guerra, all of Palacios; and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Rose Mary Cruz.

Visitation: after 1 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at The Living Word Church.

Funeral services: 11 a.m. on Tuesday at church, with the Rev. Tony Flores officiating.

Burial: Palacios Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Mario Manrriquez, Simon Rivera, Nghi Le, Marcus Gatica, Eddie Rivera, and Nicandro Gonzalez.

Funeral Services For C. A. Rivers, 90, To Be Held Sunday

C. A. Rivers, 90 years of age, died at 2:10 Saturday morning, January 21, 1956 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Shannon. Funeral services will be held at the West Palacios Church of God of Prophecy at 1 p. m. Sunday, January 29. The body will be brought overland from the Duncan Funeral Home in Bay City, leaving there at 12 noon.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. John Shannon, Palacios, and Mrs. Oscar Gordon, San Antonio; three sons, C. W. Rivers, Palacios, Emmitt Rivers, Bay City and Tom Rivers, Houston and a host of relatives and friends.

Charlie Word Rivers

Funeral services for Charlie Word Rivers, 82, who passed away February 21 in Houston, were held at 1 p. m. Sunday, February 24, at the West Palacios Church of God of Prophecy with Bishop J. W. Deadrick officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Survivors include: 4 daughters, Mrs. Louella Harris of Galveston, Mrs. Thelma Luddington of Palacios, Mrs. Opal Field of Houston and Mrs. Victoria Woods of LaMarque; 4 brothers, Emmitt Rivers of Bay City, John Hadden of El Maton; Harvey Hadden of Houston and Mark Hadden of Dickinson; two sisters, Mrs. Dora Faniel of El Maton and Mrs. Ollie Gordon of San Antonio.

Mrs. Nettie Rivers

Funeral services for Mrs. Nettie L. Rivers, 4525 Teton, Houston, who died Saturday evening, May 20, of a heart attack while visiting with her daughter, Mrs. Opal Fields, will be held Friday, May 26, at 2 p. m. at the Church of God of Prophecy, West Palacios. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Rivers was born at Ashby, Texas, January 8, 1899. She with her family moved to Palacios in 1931.

She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy for 35 years, served as a licensed evangelist in the church for 33 years and attended the Bible Training Camp at Cleveland, Tennessee for three years.

She pastored the Church of God of Prophecy at Wharton. Moving to Houston in 1951, she was instrumental in organizing the Church of God of Prophecy, East Sunnyside, Houston, where she served as pastor for 11 years.

She is survived by her husband, Charlie Word Rivers, four daughters, Mrs. Lue Ella Harris, Galveston; Mrs. Opal Fields, Houston; Mrs. Victoria Woods, LaMarque and Mrs. Thelma Luddington, Palacios; one sister, Mrs. Letha Buckner, Houston; two brothers, Darnell Lacy, Houston and Willie Wallace, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; twenty one grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

Lois Mildred Roane

Funeral services for Mrs. Lois Mildred Roane, 84, of Palacios, were held Friday, Nov. 5, 1909, at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie Parker officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Roane died Nov. 3. She was born Sept. 2, 1915 in Schulenburg to the late James Drew and Kizzie Mayes. A retired teacher from Central Elementary School in Palacios, where she taught for 13 years, Mrs. Roane had resided in Palacios for the past 38 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bertram and a former member of the Athena Club in Palacios.

Survivors include one daughter, Kay Roane of Houston; a niece, Kathy Mayes of San Antonio; and a great-niece, Lynann Ball, formerly of San Antonio.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Oscar Mitchell Roane; two sisters, Ella Lee Mayes and Johnnie Ruth Williams; and one brother, Milton Drew Mayes.

Pallbearers included Mike Finch, Roger Gillaspy, Raymond Mitchell and the Rev. Charlie Parker.

Oscar Mitchell “Doc” Roane

Funeral services for O. M. “Doc” Roane, 78, of Palacios will be held 2 p. m. Monday at the Palacios Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Bernard “Buck” Ritchea officiating. Burial will follow at the Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Roane was born Aug. 20, 1912, to James Mitchell and Ella Camp Roane in Hempstead and died 2:30 a. m. Feb. 9, 1991, at Wagner General Hospital.

A resident of Palacios since 1960, he was a retired school teacher with the Palacios Independent School District and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Roane of Palacios; a daughter, Kay Roane of Houston; two brothers, A. L. Roane of Jourdanton and N. H. Roane of Mission; six nieces and six nephews.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Palacios.

James D. Roberts

DIED.—Mr. Roberts, who lived west of the railroad track, died Tuesday night at 11 o’clock. Funeral services were held at the home of the deceased Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Israel, pastor of the Baptist church, followed by interment in the city cemetery. Mr. Roberts with his family have lived here only a short time, having come here in February. He was sick before they came here and thought he might recover, but was not able to over come his illness. He made many friends who sympathize with his family in their untimely loss.

John H. Robertson

Graveside services for John H. Robertson, who died March 19 in Austin, will be held at the Palacios Cemetery Wednesday, March 21, at 4 p. m. Funeral services were held that morning at 10 a. m. at the First Southern Presbyterian Church in Austin with the Rev. Frank B. Walker officiating.

A resident of Austin for eight years, he was a member of the Texas Water Development Board in Austin, the Angleton Masonic Lodge and the First Southern Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Madge Clement Robertson in August of 1972.

He is survived by two sons, John C Robertson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Robert N. Robertson of Houston; one sister Mrs. Catherine Overall of Dallas and five grandchildren.

Mrs. J. H. Robertson - Margaret Elma “Madge” Robertson

Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret “Madge” Elma Robertson, aged 75, will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Thursday, August 31, at 2 P. M. with the Rev. Leslie E. Webb conducting.

Mrs. Robertson was a former resident of Palacios and attended the Palacios School. At the time of her death she was living in Austin, Texas at 5005 Placid Place. She had been a resident of Austin for seven yers and was a member of the First Southern Presbyterian Church of Austin.

She is survived by her husband, John H. Robertson, of Austin; two sons, John C. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Robert N. of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Audrey Clement Powell of Victoria, Texas, and Mrs. Edith Rackley of New Mexico; one brother, Coleman Clement of Victoria, Texas.

Earl L. “Budd” Robinson

Graveside services for Earl L. “Buddy” Robinson, 71 of Palacios, were held Dec. 29 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. J. Elroy Weikel officiating.

Robinson was born February 3, 1918 in Smithfield, Illinois to the late Loyd and Fern Walters Robinson. He died December 27, 1989 at Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Rudolph Robinson of Palacios; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Enid) Johnson of Wilmington, Delaware; and brothers, Ernest Robinson of Canton, Illinois and Roy Robinson of West Plains, Missouri.

Horace Robinson
4-Year-Old Child Fatally Burned by Gasoline at Home Near Here Monday
Young son of R. G. Robinson Dies In County Hospital

Tragedy came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Robinson, Monday, when their son, Horace, was fatally burned. The family live on the Crescent V. Ranch west of Palacios and early morning had a fire in the yard to burn the handle from an ax.

One of the boys who was watching the fire called to his brother to bring a can of kerosene to help with the burning and the child brought a can of gasoline instead. The accident occurred when the can containing the supposed kerosene was poured on the burning ax handle. The flames caught the little boy’s clothing on fire and before they could be extinguished he was badly burned.

He was taken to the Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City where he died at 5:15 p.m.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock in the Palacios Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch and burial in the Palacios cemetery.

Besides his parents, two sisters and two brothers survive, Patricia and Betty Jo., Ralph and W. C. Robinson.

We join in extending sympathy to the bereaved in this hour of sorrow.

Howard Robinson

Palacios—Howard Robinson 79, of Palacios, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003.

He was born Sept. 14, 1932, in Van Vleck to the late Louella Monroe and Amos Robinson.

Survivors: daughter, Joyce Harris of West Columbia; son, Donald Sanford of Lake Jackson; sister, Juanita Robinson; brother, Daniel Mayberry; and several grandchildren.

Visitation will be 3 – 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services Held Tuesday P. M. For Mrs. Isabelle S. Robinson, 93

Funeral services for Mrs. Isabelle S. Robinson were held at the First Methodist Church Tuesday, December 10, at 4 p. m. with the Rev. John Berkley officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born in Ayrshire, Scotland on June 9, 1871, a daughter of David H. and Mary Stewart, she came to America in 1882 with her parents and settled in Illinois. On January 1, 1896 she married Jesse E. Robinson and to this union were born two sons, Wayne and Merwin. She had been a resident of Palacios since 1911. She died December 8 in Premont, where she had been with her son since August of this year.

She is survived by one son, Merwin of Premont and two granddaughters.

Jesse E. Robinson Pioneer Barber Here Buried Sunday

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 16, at 2 p. m. at the First Methodist Church of Jesse E. Robinson, long-time resident of Palacios. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wesley N. Schulze. Music was furnished by some of the singers with whom Mr. Robinson formerly sang in the choir.

Mr. Robinson was born November 1, 1873 in Kirksville, Mo., the child of John and Elizabeth Rice Robinson. He was reared in Ohio, and in 1892 went to Hartsburg, Ill. He married Isabel Stewart January 1, 1896. After a brief stay in Oklahoma, where they moved in 1908, Mr. and Mrs. Robinson moved to Palacios in 1911.

While living in Oklahoma, Mr. Robinson united with the Methodist Church, of which he was a faithful, active, and devoted member for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed the sacred hymns of the church. He served as Sunday school secretary with a perfect attendance record for eight years. So long as he was able he was in his place at the church.

Mr. Robinson passed away at his home in Palacios September 14, after a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. J. E. Robinson of Palacios, two sons, Merwin of Premont, and Wayne of Ingleside, one sister, Mrs. Bertha Sherwood of Kansas, and two grandchildren, Frances Earl and Isabel Ann. A host of friends also mourn his passing, but rejoice that they knew such a man.

“Mourn not for him who God has blest,
And taken to his heavenly rest,
Free from all sorrow, grief and pain.
Our loss is his eternal gain.”

Mary M. Robinson

Mrs. Mary M. Robinson, of Laredo, a former resident of Palacios, died Christmas day at Pasadena Bayshore Hospital of injuries suffered when the car in which she was a passenger was struck broadside by a second car.

The driver of the car, Mrs. David Frankson of Palacios and the occupants of the second car, Mr. and Mrs. David Edward Pancake of Pasadena, were treated at the hospital and released.

The woman had arrived in South Houston from Palacios early Christmas day to spend the day with relatives when the accident happened.

Funeral services for Mrs. Robinson were held at the First United Methodist Church at 2 p. m. Saturday, December 29, with the Rev. J. R. Gwin and Rev. Tom Connolly officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of Dave and Fannie Kennon McCuthcheon, she was born February 12, 1910 in Alpine, Texas.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond G. Robinson of Laredo;  step-mother, Beulah Stephens of Houston; two daughters, Betty Funk of Waverly, Iowa and Pat Mormanda of Germany; one son, Ralph Robinson, attending Sam Houston University, Huntsville; one brother, S. P. McCuthcheo of El Paso and 11 grandchildren.
