Final Rites Held For Former Sheriff Buell E. Sailor

Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Monday in the First Baptist Church for Buell Emmett Sailor, who passed to his eternal rest early Saturday morning. The Rev. John Polk of Blessing and Rev. Rayford B. Harris officiated.

Mr. Sailor was born on March 28, 1901 in Bellflower, Mo. He moved with his parents to the Texas panhandle as pioneers in 1906. Here he attended school and grew to manhood.

He and Martha Elizabeth Barrett were united in marriage in Bay City on December 24, 1919 and returned to Pampa, Texas to make their home.

Mr. Sailor became a Christian when a young man and united with the Baptist Church in 1921 and had been a faithful member since.

In 1923, due to poor health, he and his wife came to Palacios to recuperate and in 1926 built a home on Duson Ave. and became permanent residents. He became deputy sheriff in 1931, and in 1933 he and his wife and son moved to Bay City where he became city deputy in which capacity he served until January 1, 1934 when he became sheriff of Matagorda County.  He served this office two terms. On January 1, 1947 he retired and they returned to Palacios to make their home.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Sailor; one son, Donald Sailor, who is stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station; two granddaughters, Donna and Larissa Sailor; an uncle, R. J. Sailor of Pampa and an aunt, Mrs. Georgia Bowles of May View, Washington.

Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Martha E. Sailor

Mrs. Martha E. Sailor, a resident of Palacios before moving to Lampoc, California, 13 years ago, died December 8, 1976 in San Luis Obispo, California.

Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. Friday, December 10 in the Starbuck Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Eric Lindholm officiating and in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel at 10 a. m. Monday, December 13, with the Rev. J. R. Gwin and Rev. H. A. Whitfield officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Sailor, the former Martha Barrett, was born in Banner, Oklahoma on January 28, 1902. She married Buel E. Sailor, a former sheriff of Matagorda County, who preceded her in death. A member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Lompoc and the Lompoc Senior Citizens Club, she was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church of Palacios.

She is survived by one son, Donald B. Sailor of Lompoc; two granddaughters and one great granddaughter.

Antonia S. Salinas

Services were held September 7, 1990 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church for Antonia S. Salinas of Palacios. Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiated at the ceremony and at the burial at Palacios Cemetery following. A Rosary was said September 6 at the Palacios Funeral Home.

Mrs. Salinas was born February 11, 1929 in Matagorda, Texas to Joe G. Solis and Antonia Nesmith Solis and died September 5 at Wagner General Hospital. She had been a resident of Palacios for 47 years.

Survivors include her husband, Z. G. Salinas of Palacios; daughters Liz Pena of Port Lavaca and Gilma Horton of Bayou La Batre, Alabama; son, Gilbert "Gil" Vasquez of Port Lavaca; sisters, Annie Rendon of Palacios, Lila Crane of Mission, Texas, Judy Bernal of San Clemente, California, Dora Romo of San Antonio and Mary Lou Perez of Port Lavaca; brothers, Joe N. Solis and Richard N. Solis of Port Lavaca, Marcelino N. Solis of Bloomington, Texas and Robert N. Solis of Palacios; and five grandchildren.

Bartola A. Salinas

Funeral services for Mrs. Bartola A. Salinas were held Monday at 9:45 a. m. at the Rendon Funeral Home Chapel and at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Armand Florizoone officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery. A rosary was recited at 8 p. m. Sunday at the funeral home.

A resident of Palacios fo the past 30 years, she was born August 24, 1885, in Benavides and died at 1 a. m. Saturday in Wagner General Hospital following a short illness.

She is survived by four sons, Z. Salinas, Jose Salinas and Morris Salinas all of Palacios and Santos Salinas of Austin; three daughters, Mrs. Juan Trevino of Houston, Mrs. James Cunningham of Blessing and Mrs. Luz Zamora of New Gulf, 32 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

Bernice Salinas

Funeral services for Bernice Dovie Salinas, 68, were held Oct. 26 at 10 a. m. at the Church of God of Prophecy with Rev. Charles Collins officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Salinas was born September 1, 1914 in Hamilton County and died October 23, 1982 at Wagner General Hospital.

She had been a resident of Palacios since 1936.

Survivors include her husband, Z. G. Salinas of Palacios; one daughter, Mary Ann Annwaits of Victoria; three sons, Z. G. Salinas of Austin, Alvin Morris Salinas of Bay City and Edward James Salinas of San Antonio; three sisters, Nancy Bradley of Austin; Anice Wood of Victoria and Opal Konning; three brothers, Alva Lewis Leach Jr. of Edna, John William Leach of Livingston and Johnny Leach of Louise; and 13 grandchildren.

Grandsons were pallbearers.

Joe G. Salinas

Funeral services for Joe G. Salinas, 77, of Palacios, will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday (Nov 19) at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Casey Jarzombek officiating. Interment will be at the Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Salinas was born Sept. 23, 1920 in Collegeport to Maurico and Bartola Gonzales Salinas. He died Nov. 16, 1997 in the V. A. Hospital in Houston.

He was a life member of the V. F. W. of Palacios, Eagles, a veteran of WWII serving in the U. S. Army.

He is survived by his wife, Angelita Salinas of Palacios; daughters, Mary Compos of Houston, Elia Villarreal of Pasadena; sons, Joe R. Salinas of Freeport, Albert Salinas of Pasadena; sister Nieves Samora of Richmond; brothers, Z. G. Salinas, Morris Salinas both of Palacios, and Santos Salinas of Austin. Also, fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Maria Alaniz Salinas

Funeral services for Maria Alaniz Salinas, 61 of Palacios, were held Jan. 24 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Brian Crookes officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Salinas died Jan. 23 in Wagner General Hospital. She was born in Shiner, Tex.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Salinas of Palacios; daughters, Maria Ortiz of Corpus Christi, Elida Mendez and Abelia Perez of Houston Olivia Diaz and Janie Campos of Palacios; sons, Raymond Salinas, David Salinas and Robert Salinas, all of Palacios; sister, Anastasia Castro of Corpus Christi; four brothers, Amado Alaniz, Alfred Flores and Santiago Flores of Pawnee and Andres Alaniz of San Antonio; 30 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mauricio Salinas To Be Buried Thursday

Funeral services for Mauricio Salinas will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Thursday morning, April 18, at 10 a. m. with Father Hamala of Blessing officiating. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery.

A son of Jesse and Francisca Gonzales Salinas, he was born September 22, 1881 and died at his home at 911 Morton Tuesday morning, April 16. He had been a resident of Palacios for 27 years.

Survivors include his wife, Bartola Salinas of Palacios; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Trevino of Houston, Mrs. Frances Cunningham of Blessing and Mrs. Nieves Samora of New Gulf; five sons, Jesse of Louise, Santos of Austin, Z. G., Joe and Mauricio Salinas, Jr. all of Palacios; a half-sister, Petra Garza and a half-brother, Jose Angel Garza both of Monterrey, Mexico.

Raymond Salinas, Jr.

Funeral services for Raymond Salinas, Jr., 85, of Palacios, were held May 8, 2000 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Salinas was born Sept. 25, 1914 in Shiner, Tx. to the late Genoveo and Eulagia Olivares Salinas, He died May 4, 2000 at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston.

Mr. Salinas was a lifelong resident of Palacios and member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Maria S. Ortiz of Corpus Christi, Elida S. and Jesse Mendez of Houston, Olivia S. Diaz of Palacios, Janice S. and Paul R. Campos of Palacios, Delia S. Cuellar of Pearland, and Abelia S. and Alfred Guillen of Texas City; sons and daughters-in-law Raymond and Irma Salinas, Jr. of Francitas, David and Suzanne Salinas of Palacios, Joe G. Salinas of Palacios, and Robert G. Salinas of Palacios; 38 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria A. Salinas, three sisters and three brothers.

Pallbearers were Alfred Guillen, David Salinas, Jesse Mendez Jr., Greg Reyna, Roby Reyna Jr. and Paul R. Campos III.

Services Held Here For Mrs. Elijia Samora

Funeral services for Mrs. Elijia Samora were held at 10 a. m. Wednesday, November 15 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Patrick O’Farrell officiating at the requiem mass. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios for 45 years, she was born in Gonzales County, Texas on September 11, 1897 and died November 13.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Genovea Hernandez, Mrs. Margaret Luna and Mrs. Mary Ellna Lopez of Palacios; four sons, Frank Samora, Palacios; Lupito and Pete Samora, New Gulf and Ysabel Samora of Rockport.

Frank Nunez Samora

Funeral mass for Frank Nunez Samora, 85, of Freeport and a former resident of Palacios, was held 10 a. m. Tuesday, July 18, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiated, followed by interment at Palacios Cemetery.

Mr. Samora died July 15 in Freeport. He was born June 15, 1915 in Floresville to the late Jose and Elija Nunez Samora.

A veteran and prisoner of war during World War II, he enlisted in the U. S. Army on March 7, 1940 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in Australia and New Guinea, and the European-African-Middle European Theater with combat duty during the Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns. He was captured by German forces in Belgium in December 1944, remaining a prisoner of war until May 1945 when he was freed by Allied troops. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 14, 1945 as a Corporal.

Mr. Samoa was a life member of the Arthur C. Larson VFW Post 4341 of Freeport and a former member of the Queen-Hamlin VFW Post 2467 of Palacios

Survivors include his children, Lorraine Sanchez of Palacios; Connie Samora Longoria and husband, Andrew, of El Campo; Emma Samora Alviso and husband Santos, of Freeport; and Marcus Garcia and wife, Mary, of Victoria; one brother, Isabel Samora of Rockport; one sister, Janie Hernandez of Palacios; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Mary Chavez Samora.

Pallbearers were Jimmie Valdez, Edward Rojas, Leo Sanchez III, Andrew Longoria III, Joe Montalvo and Daniel Samora.

Man Charged With Stabbing Death Of Frank Samora, Jr.

Funeral services for Frank Samora, Jr., who was stabbed to death early Saturday morning, were held Monday, April 17, at 11 a. m. in the Rendon Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Louis Solis, Jr. was charged with murder Saturday in connection with the knifing death of Samora in Justice of the Peace W. R. Hasley’s court, on a complaint signed by Deputy Sheriff E. T. Miller, and placed under a $5,000 bond. He was transferred to the Matagorda County jail in Bay City.

Deputy Miller said the stabbing occurred a mile west of Palacios at a roadside park. Samora was pronounced dead on arrival at Wagner General Hospital.

The victim, a native of Palacios, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Samora, Sr. on August 11, 1947.

He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Mrs. Leo Sanchez, Jr., Miss Connie Samora and Miss Emma Samora, all of Palacios and one brother, Marcos Garcia of Victoria.

Maria Chavez Samora

Mrs. Maria Chavez Samora of Freeport, a former Palacios resident, passed away Friday, September 10, in Wagner General Hospital.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p. m. Sunday in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. Monday, September 13, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Brian Crookes officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

She was born August 20, 1923 in Matagorda, Texas.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Samora of Freeport; three daughters, Mrs. Leo Sanchez of Palacios, Mrs. Andrew Longoria of El Campo, Mrs. Santos Alviso of Freeport; one son, Marcos Garcia of Victoria; one brother, Palcido Chavez of Newgulf; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Cruz G. Sanchez

Funeral services for Cruz G. Sanchez will be held Wednesday, July 24, at 2 p. m. at the Rendon Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. C. Henning of Edna, pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Palacios Cemetery.

Sanchez died late Sunday night July 21, of injuries received in an auto-pedestrian accident on State Highway 35 approximately 2 miles north of Tivoli.

A resident of Palacios since 1932 and an employee for Alcoa for 19 years, he was born September 13, 1916 in Vanderbilt a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Sanchez.

Survivors include his wife, Amelia Sanchez; three sons, Andy, Daniel and Johnny; one daughter, Mrs. Herman Gatica; four brothers, Frank, Salvador, Lucio Sanchez, all of Palacios and Gilbert Sanchez of Newgulf; one sister, Estefena Sanchez of Palacios and six grandchildren

Eddie Ray Sanchez

Sargent—Eddie Ray Sanchez, 52, of Sargent and formerly of Palacios, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997.

He was born Jan. 20, 1945, in Palacios to Margaret Roach Sanchez of Palacios and the late Lucio Garcia Sanchez. He was a store clerk at Diamond Mini-Mart in Bay City. He was a Catholic and a member of Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie No. 3821 of Palacios.

Survivors: wife, Mary Lou Sandoval Sanchez; stepsons, Leo Diaz and Ernest Diaz, both of Houston, and Thomas Diaz of Palacios; mother; sister, Hope Terrasas of Palacios; and brothers, Robert Sanchez of Palacios and Lucio Sanchez Jr. of Houston.

Services were 10 a. m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Palacios Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Alfred Tijerina officiating. Burial was at Palacios Cemetery.

Eladio “Leo” Sanchez, Sr.

Rosary was recited at the Palacios Funeral Home at 8:30 p. m. Friday for Eladio “Leo” Sanchez, Sr. who passed away at 6 p. m. Thursday, August 31, at the Diagnostic Center in Houston.

Requiem mass was held Saturday at 3 p. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Adolph Janda officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A native of Salatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico, he was born February 18, 1908. A resident of Palacios for 50 years, living at 903 Main St., he was a retired commercial fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Felipa Sanchez of Palacios; four sons, Henry, Phillip and Louis Sanchez, all of Houston and Leo Sanchez, Jr. of Palacios; two sisters, Mrs. Trinidad Media and Mrs. Nicolasa Florez of Mexico City; one brother, Bonaficio Sanchez of Ancambro, Guanajuato, Mexico and three grandchildren.

Estefana G. Sanchez

Funeral services for Mrs. Estefana G. Sanchez were held at 10 a. m. Friday, July 25, at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joel Rameriz and Rev. Reyes Garcia officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A prayers service was held at the funeral chapel Wednesday evening at 7:30.

A native of Fannin, Texas, she was born April 24, 1909 the daughter of Manuel and Josephine Sanchez. She had been a resident of Palacios for 40 years and was a member of Templo Bautiste Antioquia Church. She passed away Tuesday, July 22, in Wagner General Hospital.

She is survived by two daughters, Sarah Hernandez and Anita Rodriguez; two sons, Daniel Hernandez and Elias Diaz, all of Palacios; three brothers, Gilbert Sanchez of Newgulf, Frank and Lucio Sanchez of Palacios, 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Frank G. Sanchez

Services were held January 18, 1991 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Palacios for Frank G. Sanchez of Palacios. Rev. Ralph Walters officiated at the ceremony and the burial following at Palacios Cemetery.

Sanchez was born May 11, 1921 in Edna to Manuel and Josephine Garcia Sanchez. He died January 15 at DeTar Hospital in Victoria.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Garcia Sanchez of Palacios; daughters, Omega De La Rosa of Bay City, Josie Williams of Palacios, and Emma Sanchez of Victoria; sons Chris Sanchez, Mario Sanchez, and Dario Sanchez, all of Palacios and Johnny Sanchez of Victoria; brothers, Gilbert Sanchez of Port Lavaca and Lucio Sanchez of Palacios; 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Lucio Sanchez, Jr., Andy Sanchez, Elias Dias, Manuel Resendez, Hector Sanchez and Tim De La Rosa. Honorary pallbearer was Christ Sanchez, Jr.

Helen Garcia Sanchez

Funeral services for Helen Garcia Sanchez, 78, were held Dec. 20 at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Matula officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Sanchez was born July 7, 1907 in Port Lavaca and died Dec. 16, 1985. She was the daughter of Albert and Delores Padron Garcia.

Mrs. Sanchez was a volunteer at Wagner General Hospital and a member of the Palacios senior citizens.

Survivors include one daughter, Delores Rocha of Houston; one son, Joaquin Rocha, Jr. of Victoria; one brother, Albert Garcia, Jr. of Houston; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Paul Rocha, Joe Garza, Vincent Rodriguez, John Sanchez, Joe Altamirano, and Manuel Ramirez Gonzalez.

Jose H. Sanchez

Jose H. Sanchez, a resident of Palacios for 40 years, died Tuesday, July 25 at 1:30 p. m. in Wagner General Hospital after a lingering illness.

Rosary was recited at Rendon Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, July 26, at 8 p. m. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 27, at 10:45 a. m. at the Rendon Funeral Chapel followed by Requiem Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 11 a. m. with the Rev. Armand Florizoone officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

He was born November 24, 1902, in Anchuac, N. L., Mexico. A commercial fisherman, he resided at 707 8th St.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen G. Sanchez of Palacios; one step-daughter, Mrs. Dolores Marie Rivas of Houston and one step son, Joaquin Rochas, Jr. of Victoria.
