Mattie Underwood

Mrs. Mattie Underwood was born Martha Crain on Oct 10, 1866, at Nashville, Tenn., and died at her home in this city, Jan. 15, 1945.

She spent her early life in Tennessee, where she taught school for a while and it was during these years that she became a Christian and a member of the Baptist Church.

In 1904 she came to Palacios with her family and has made this her home most of the time since. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. C. W. Warn of Palacios, and Mrs. G. W. Cantrell of Houston, four sons, B. C. Richardson, of Brazoria, J. R. Underwood, Aransas Pass, J. M. Underwood, Refugio and A. W. Underwood, Sinton; one sister Mrs. Edna Simpson of Rosenberg and one brother, V. O. Crain of Rockdale. There also survive 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grand children and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. L. W. Crouch.

The following is a tribute to her memory written by a friend:

Mrs. Mattie Underwood has been loved and appreciated, wherever she has lived, as a neighbor and friend. She was one of the earliest settlers of Palacios and her garden and flowers were one of the show places to which the town site agents took prospective buyers to have them see the possibilities of the locality. Her keen mind aided by her tireless energy made anything she did a success.

Mrs. Underwood’s marvelous ability to care for and love anything that had life, either plant or animal, made her garden and flowers the envy of her friends. No task was too menial or hard for her to undertake if it helped promote the life or comfort of anything. During her life on a cattle ranch, any animal in distress was always taken care of regardless.

Her love for her children and desire to help them took her from her home in Palacios a number of times—and how she has helped them over a hard place by her willingness and ability to do hard work.

Mrs. Underwood’s love of pretty things is shown by the many dainty and beautiful pieces of needle work she has done.

The example of her life of energy and friendliness will be missed by a large circle of friends and her children will cherish the memory of her wise council and loving helpfulness.
