Ella Mae Waterman

Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Mae Waterman were held at St. John’s Episcopal Church Sunday, August 9, at 3 p. m. with the Rev. James M. Abernathey officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Daughter of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Drenner Chiles and the late Emmett Ingram Chiles, she was born October 20, 1911, in Wharton. A resident of Palacios for the past eight years, moving here from Houston to make her home with her mother a few years after the death of her husband, Bill Waterman. She had worked at the Palacios Pharmacy and Mickelson’s Appliance. She passed away in Wagner General Hospital Thursday afternoon, August 6.

She is survived by her mother, a daughter, Mrs. Susan Chiles Neumann of Yuma, Arizona; three sisters, Mrs. Harry Tinsley of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Mrs. Lee Pierce of Blessing, Mrs. R. E. Feather of Jackson, Michigan; four brothers, F. M. Chiles of Odessa, L. L. Chiles of Brazoria, Emmett I. Chiles, Jr., of Palacios, G. A. “Sonny” Chiles of Sugarland and three grandchildren.

Final Services Held Here Monday For W. M. Waterman

Funeral services for William Madison “Bill” Waterman, Jr. were held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Palacios at 10 a. m. Monday, April 27 with the Rev. Ralph L. Masters officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

He was born on February 10, 1914 in Walthill, Nebr. and died at Walker Clinic, Bellaire, Saturday, April 25.

He was district salesman of Rolled Steel Corp, a member of the Episcopal Church, Arabia Temple Shrine, Ben Hur Lodge and A. F. & A. M. He was a flight officer in the Air Force during World War II, serving in Europe.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ella May Waterman; daughter, Mrs. Susan Neumann of Pecos, three grandchildren and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Waterman, Sr. of Hot Springs, Ark.

Mrs. J. L. Waters - Annie Hardisty Waters

Annie Hardisty Waters, wife of J. L. Waters, passed away at her home in this city early Saturday morning, after a lingering illness. She was born in Baltimore, Md., Nov. 27, 1869. Mr. and Mrs. Waters moved to Palacios in its early days from Houston, and for a number of years Mr. Waters served as conductor on the S. P. lines. She was beloved by all who knew her and until her health failed a number of years ago she took an active part in the church work of our city and social activities.

Besides the husband she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. E. W. Coyle of San Antonio, Two sons, Leonard, of Dallas, and Raymond, of Seguin also two brothers Thomas and John Hardisty, of Houston, one niece, Mrs. R. D. Gettys, Houston, and one nephew, W. H. McGee of Houston.

Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. George F. Gillespie officiating. Burial was made in the Palacios cemetery under the direction of Brandon-Duffy Funeral Home, with Messrs. R. J. Sisson, J. L. Pybus, J. A. Davis, John Bentler, John Bowden and C. W. Nester as pallbearers.

James L. Waters, Former S. P. Conductor Dies Here Tuesday

Funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon for James Leonard Waters, a former conductor on the Southern Pacific passenger train from Palacios to Wharton.

Mr. Waters was born June 4, 1869 and died in Palacios, Tuesday, November 28.

He is survived by two sons, Raymond Waters and James Waters and a daughter, Mrs. E. W. Coyle of San Antonio. His wife preceded him in death.

Graveside Services Held Tuesday For Mrs. Olive A. Watkins

Graveside services for Mrs. Olive Augusta Watkins of Bull Shoals, Arkansas were held at the Palacios Cemetery Tuesday, February 15, at 2:30 p. m. with Rev. Leslie E. Webb officiating.

Mrs. Watkins was born August 23, 1881 in Palacios, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Howard Dunbar. She died Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Marion County Hospital in Yellville, Arkansas. Funeral services were held at the Bull Shoals Methodist Church at 2 p. m. Sunday Feb. 13.

Survivors include her husband, Robert H. Watkins, one daughter, Mrs. Rosalie Batchelder, both of Bull Shoals; one sister, Mrs. Gene Bardgett of New Orleans; two brothers, Irvan Dunbar of Refugio and Robert Dunbar of Galveston and two grandsons.

Dave Watson, Jr.

Funeral services for Dave Watson, Jr., 67, of Palacios, were held Feb. 14, 1996 at Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church in Bay City [Palacios] with Rev. Leroy Monroe officiating.

Mr. Watson was born May 16, 1928 in Clarksdale, Miss. and adopted by Dave and Bertha Watson. A. U. S. Navy veteran, he married Gloria D. Young on Nov. 20, 1970. He was a member of Pilgrim Rose Baptist Church.

Mrs. Watson is survived by his wife, Gloria; mother-in-law, Gussie Jones; children, Steven and Bertha Pina of California, Eric and Ruth Young of Palacios, Gregory, Jim, Roderick, Curley, Wanda, Jackie and Janice; two foster daughters, Erica and Mary; 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons.

Infant of H. C. Weed

Twin boys were born to Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Weed Sunday night, but one of the babies died. The other is doing quite well, but Mrs. Weed is not improving as rapidly as she should.

Sherman A. Weed

Funeral services for Sherman Andrew Weed were held at the Trinity Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon, September 28, at 2 o’clock with the Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A native of Miranda City, Texas, he was born April 23, 1927, a son of Nathan and Marie Weed.

A pipefitter, he was employed by Union Carbide and had resided in Palacios for eight years. He passed away Monday morning at Wagner General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He is survived y his wife, Kathryn; two daughters, Deborah Kay and Linda Gail, one son, Sherman Andrew Weed, Jr., all of Palacios; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Lou Bowen; one brother, Bobby Weed, both of San Antonio.

Earnest Wehmeyer

Funeral services for Earnest Fredrick Wehmeyer, 83, were held Nov. 14 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Masonic graveside services followed at Palacios Cemetery.

Wehmeyer was born Oct. 30, 1899 in Port Lavaca and died Nov. 12, 1982 at Wagner General Hospital. He was the son of William Henry Wehmeyer and Emily Frances Ulrich Wehmeyer. He was a retired state supervisor of Texas Parks and Wildlife. He had been a resident of Palacios since 1931.

Wehmeyer was a mason of Palacios Chapter 990, a member of Gulf Coast Club of Matagorda County, Shriner of Arabia Temple of Houston, and a Scottish 32ndf Degree of Galveston Consistory.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, JoBeth and David Frankson; two sisters, Ella Davidson of Pleasington and Lena Crawford of Victoria; one brother, Henry Wehmeyer of Port Lavaca; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Josephine Moore Wehmeyer

Funeral services for Josephine “Jo Beth” Moore Wehmeyer, 77, of Palacios, were held Monday at the First Baptist Church with the Reverends Leon Maxwell and J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. Wehmeyer was a resident of Palacios since 1931. She is survived by her husband, Earnest Wehmeyer of Palacios; one daughter, Jo Beth Frankson of Palacios; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Carleen J. Weighman

Funeral services for Carleen Janel Weighman, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Weighman, were held at the Palacios Funeral Home at 3 p. m. Sunday, February 4, with Rev. Rayford Harris officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Born Oct. 4, 1967 in Tampa, Fla., she died February 2, 1968 in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City.

Besides her parents she is survived by two sisters, Kandy King and Wanda; two brothers, Walter and Kimberly.

Frank Lewis Weikel

Funeral services for Frank Lewis Weikel, 46, of Jacksonville, Ala. were held at 2 p. m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios with Rev. Doug Blanton officiating. Also assisting in the services were his father and two brothers, the Rev. Bluford E. Weikel and Robert Weikel. Interment followed in the Palacios Cemetery.

Weikel was born Oct. 4, 1939 in Fort Worth to the Rev. J. Elroy and Lois Batchelder Weikel of Palacios. He died Feb. 28, 1986 in a Birmingham, Ala., hospital following a sudden illness.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Elaine Weikel of Jacksonville, Ala.; four daughters, Amy and Kelley Weikel, both of Jacksonville, Ala. and Garnette and Robin Weikel, both of Humble; four brothers, Rev. Bluford E. Weikel of Needville, Rev. Robert Weikel of Houston, William G. and David Weikel, both of Beaumont.

Henry B. Weir

Funeral services for Henry B. Weir were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, August 1, in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. R. Gwin and Rev. Douglas Cadwallader officiating. Interment was in Palacios Cemetery.

Son of the late Hal and Ada Welder Weir, he was born February 3, 1897 in Texas. A retired city engineer for the City of Houston he had resided in this area for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, a veteran of World War I and graduate of Texas A & M. An active sportsman, he enjoyed playing golf, bowling and fishing. He was dead on arrival at Wagner General Hospital early Monday morning, July 31.

He is survived by a host of friends, especially Mrs. Esther Smith and her children, Jimmy Smith of Palacios and Mrs. Jack R. Jones of Foster City, Calif.

Elva Jane Welch

Mrs. Elva Jane Welch, aged 67 years, 11 months and 23 days, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. R. Allen, in Palacios, March 19, 1936.

She was born in Clark County, Iowa, March 25, 1868. in young womanhood she was married to James William Welch and to this union four children were born. One son Horace Ona Welch, preceded her in death, Dec. 14, 1934. Surviving children are a son, Allen Welch, of Cherokee, Okla., two daughters, Mrs. Fred Simno, of Colorado, and Mrs. E. R Allen, Palacios.

The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church and lived a devoted Christian life and was a regular attendant of her church services. During the past year she had made her home with her daughter at Camp Allen. She was kind and courteous to all and her friends were legion.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock, with her pastor Rev. J. C. Gibbons, in charge, assisted by O. J. Hollingsworth. Burial was made in the Palacios Cemetery under the direction of A. A. Duffy Funeral Co. Pall bearers, members of the Methodist Church, were George Curtis, Joe Huffman, W. A. Smith, Hunter McDonald, Frank Gillespie and C. L. Haynes.

Out-of-town relatives and friends here for the funeral were, the son, Allen Welch and family, Cherokee, Okla.; Chester McIntire, Cherokee, Okla.; Mrs. Eugene Case and Betty Jean, a great-granddaughter, of Houston, and Mrs. R. A. Roush and son R. A. Jr., of Houston.

Don Emmett Welsh

Funeral services for Don Emmett Welsh were held at 10 a. m. Saturday, June 5, in the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. R. Gwin officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of Adolphus and Edith Welsh, he was born May 2, 1894 in Elwood, Pa. A retired refrigeration repairman, he had been a resident of Palacios since 1907. He passed away at 3 a. m. Thursday, June 3, in Matagorda General Hospital.

Survivors include: two daughters, Irene Evelyn Williams of Houston and Kathleen Maddox of Bay City; four sons, John Welsh of Blessing, Carl and Fred Welsh of Palacios and Jimmy Welsh of Brazoria; three sisters, Irene Reinke of Heavensville, Texas, Kathleen Marcus of Oregon and Meriam Dixie Johnson of Fresno, California; 20 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services Held Wednesday For Mrs. Lillian Amy Welsh

Funeral services for Mrs. Lillian Amy Welsh were held at the Palacios Funeral Home Wednesday, February 9, at 2 p. m. with Rev. H. A. Whitfield officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

A resident of Palacios since 1947, she was born on April 15, 1889 in Corsicana, Texas, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James B. Martin. She passed away in the Gulf Coast Nursing Home in Port Lavaca Sunday, February 6.

Survivors include her husband, Don Welsh of Palacios; two daughters, Mrs. Olice Scott, Yakima, Washington; Mrs. Amy Lipscomb, Kerens, Texas; four sons, James E. Morris, Atwater, Calif.; John Morris, Cheyenne, Okla., L. D. Morris, Grimes, Okla., Bob Martin Morris, Yuma, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Perry, Macon, Ga. and Mrs. May Stephenson, Bristow, Okla.

Hugh Elmer West

Funeral services for Hugh Elmer West were held at the Palacios Funeral Home chapel at 10 a. m. Wednesday, July 14, with Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. Interment was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Son of George Elmer West and Leota Elizabeth Clomwell West, he was born March 31, 1895 in Manchester, Okla. A retired ranchman, he had been a resident of Palacios for 20 years. He died Monday, July 12, in Wagner General Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Eva West of Palacios; two daughters, Bonnie Mae Taylor of Duncanville, Texas and Opal Joy White; one step-daughter, Mrs. Clarence Buller of Bay City; two sons, Doyle West of Oregon, Missouri and J. C. West of Austin; one step-son, Steve Parsutt of Matagorda; two sisters, Ellen Smith and Fern Monroe of Austin; 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Fatal Lightning Strike
Mr. Leslie Whitacre, of this City, the Unfortunate Victim

Mr. Leslie E. Whitacre, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Whitacre, of this city, was struck by lightning and instantly killed at Lolita, a small station west of Blessing on the Brownsville railroad, Monday afternoon. Mr. Whitacre, in company with Mr. Baird and his son, who were associated in the well drilling business, were working about the drilling rig Monday afternoon, when a local shower came up, and to get out of the rain they went into a shed used for housing the drilling tools and well supplies, The Messrs. Baird sat down inside, while Mr. Whitacre stood near the door or opening of the shed watching the rain, when the flash came striking him fill in the face breaking his neck. Mr. Baird and his son were stunned by the lightning, but neither severely injured.

The body of the dead man was brought to the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Whitacre, a short distance north of the Palacios college, Tuesday, where funeral services were held Wednesday morning at ten o’clock conducted by Rev. Israel, pastor of the Baptist church, followed by interment at the city cemetery.

Deceased was 24 years of age and unmarried. Besides the grief stricken parents he leaves a sister and two brothers in Illinois, a brother in Washington, and a brother, J. A. Whitacre, residing on Turtle Bay west of Palacios, of the immediate family to mourn his loss. The Whitacre families have lived in this vicinity for some years, and have in the city and surrounding country many sincere friends, who with all our people deeply sympathize with the parents and all the family in this great sorrow which has been so suddenly visited upon them.

Mrs. E. A. Whitacre - Susan Whitacre

Mrs. Edwin A. Whitacre died of paralysis Sunday Feb. 16, at her home on Route 1. Messages have been sent to sons in Washington and Illinois, and Alvin, Texas, who are expected to arrive for the funeral services, which will be held at the home at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Dr. Hanks officiating.

The deceased leaves a husband and several children to mourn her passing.

The Beacon extends, with other friends, to the bereaved ones its sincere sympathy in their sorrow.

Ira Hampton White

Funeral services for Ira Hampton White, 84, were held Saturday, August 6 at 2 p. m. at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Floyd officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery.

White was born Oct. 9, 1899 in Sulphur Springs, TX and died Aug. 4, 1983 at his residence of 314 Ritchie. White was the son of Nathaniel White and Linnie Davis White. He had lived in the city since 1945 and was a retired compressor operator with Sun Oil Co. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son, Jack H. White, Sr. of Houston; 3 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Billy, Walter and Raymond Hamlin, Fred Huitt, Adam Price and Dan Tucker.

Vida Mae White

Funeral services for Vida Mae White, 79, were held Jan. 25 at the Palacios Funeral Chapel at 2 p. m. with Rev. Ronnie Floyd officiating. Burial was in the Palacios Cemetery.

Mrs. White was born March 30, 1902 and died Jan. 23. She was the daughter of James G. Saul and Martha Stallenup. She was a member of the Baptist Church and had lived in Palacios since 1945.

Survivors include her husband, Ira H. White of Palacios; one son, Jack White of Houston; one sister, Ulita Kiker of Stanford; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Walter Hamlin, Bubba “Adam” Price, Arthur Sheeran, Billy Hamlin, Fred Huitt and Raymond Hamlin.

Durward “Pete” Allen Wigginton, Sr.

Funeral services for Durward “Pete” Allen Wigginton, Sr., 72, of Palacios, were held Aug. 15, 1994 in Palacios at the First Baptist Church of Palacios with Rev. Hollis Hoffman officiating.

Mr. Wigginton was born Nov. 3, 1921 in Leon County to Floyd and Willie Merchant Wigginton. He died Aug. 13, 1994 in Palacios.

A U. S. Marine veteran of World War II, he was a retired construction worker and was employed as a janitor at the First Baptist Church. He was a member of the VFW, the First Baptist Church and a longtime supporter of the Palacios Softball League.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mae Balusek Wigginton of Palacios; seven daughters, Candace Wigginton of Dallas, Liz Cowart of Palacios, Carolyn White of Palacios, Debra Myers of Palacios, Donna Reynolds of Dallas, Eavalana Murphy of Palacios, and Sandra Swire of Palacios; two sons, Billy Wigginton of Sugarland, and Durward Wigginton, Jr. of Dallas; a sister, Aleta Hill of Belton, Tx.; a brother, Howard Wigginton of Porter, Tx.; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Stephen Wigginton and Edward Murphy, Sr.; and a daughter, Sherrie Wigginton.

Pallbearers were Billy Wigginton, Tommie Myers, Robert Swire, Earl White, Dean Reynolds and Edward Murphy, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were H. L. James, Hoyt Theus, George Thigpen, Aaron Brister, Jim Murry and Robert King.
