Death and Funeral of Mr. George E. Williamson

Mr. Geo E. Williamson, whose home was on his farm ranch, seven miles northwest of Palacios, died at the sanitarium at San Antonio, last Monday morning of paralysis, at the age of 56 years, 8 months and 5 days. The remains were shipped to Palacios, arriving Tuesday evening, accompanied by Mrs. Williamson, who was with her husband when she died. Funeral services were held at the family home Thursday afternoon at one o’clock, conducted by Rev. D. A. Williams, pastor of the Methodist church, and in charge of Rittenhouse & Co., the undertakers. The music at the services was furnished by a quartet from the city, composed of Mrs. Pridgen, Miss Della Miller, and Messrs. Arnold and Williams. The obsequies were attended by a number of friends of the family from Palacios, and many of the neighbors and friends from the surrounding country. After the services the remains were followed to their final resting place in the newly made vault in the city cemetery.

The deceased was born near Dayton, O., Feb. 18, 1855, the son of John A. and Lucinda Williamson, and who moved near Clinton, Ills., when the deceased was about two years old, and three years later moving onto a farm near Maroa, Ills., where the departed spent his boyhood days. He attended the State Normal School at Bloomington, teaching school the two following winters, at the same time managing the home farm. On March 1st, 1882, he was united in marriage to Flora F. Chandler, of Weldon, Ills., and they moved directly to a farm east of Monticello, living there one year, then moved to Lodge, Ills., where Mr. Williamson owned and managed a tile factory for five years, and during which time the three oldest children were born. They then moved to a farm near Rock Rapids, Iowa, where they remained four years. Here the twins were born. In March, 1892, they moved to Jackson, Minn., where Mr. Williamson dealt in real estate, and managed his several farms. In 1903 they moved again, stopping one year at Urbana, Ills., to gain school advantages for their children, then moved to Houston, Texas. Here the family remained for the school privileges, Mr. Williamson dividing his time between Houston and his ranch at Palacios. In 1908 the family came to Palacios to make their home on the ranch.

Mrs. Emma Whorter [Wharton] Willis who died at her home in this city, at 11 p. m. Nov. 14, was born Aug. 13, 1863, at Lebanon, Tenn. She was converted and united with the Methodist Church when a child and has been active in Church work all her life. Palacios had been her home for about 32 years and was a charter member of the Women’s Missionary Society of the Methodist Church.

Her husband, Judge W. D. Willis preceded her in death in 1919. Mrs. Willis never had any children of her own, but was a mother to the younger members of her family, three sisters and two brothers. Her life might be summed up in the one word—devotion—devotion to God, to her family, to her neighbors and her friends. As long as health permitted she was about her daily task bringing sunshine, happiness and good will to all with whom she came in contact. When illness confined her to her home one of her greatest joys was to have her friends call to see her, and she was always cheerful and happy.

Services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the Palacios Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. F. P. Bishop, pastor of the Methodist Church at Sinton, Texas. Special music was given by a quartette singing “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “Jesus Savior Pilot Me,” and a solo by J. E. Robinson, “At the End of the Way.”
