Martha M. Wright

The subject of this sketch—Miss Martha M. Wright, was born in Keokuk, Iowa, on January 24, 1851, and died April 18th, 1932.

She removed to Palacios in 1922, and is survived by one sister, Mrs. L. B. Parkins of Palacios, and a brother, John D. Wright of Keokuk, Iowa. There are many surviving nieces and nephews, but only two were with her at the end, Mrs. Margaret Mayhugh, of Kansas City, Mo., and R. T. Phillips of Winfield, Kansas.

Her childhood was spent on a farm where she learned much of nature, and her quick mind grasped things often passed unnoticed by others. She attended the country schools in childhood and in early womanhood took on the duties of mature life.

She was a sincere Christian, having joined the Presbyterian Church at an early age. Her travels led her into activities and responsible positions of trust, where she gained the respect and confidence of her employers, as is attested by many letters from them still preserved.

One of her cherished memories, was the teaching in the Indian Schools of Oklahoma, where she exerted an elevating and endearing influence on the youthful Indians. For many years after they left the institution she received letters from them, asking advice and counsel of her whom they regarded as a trusted friend.

She read the best authors and filled her mind with useful information, and when with intimate friends, quoted many rare and refreshing passages. But her nature was so retiring and unassuming, that one did not suspect the depth of her knowledge nor the height of her altruism.

She has bequeathed us a fragrant memory of kindly deeds and cheerful words, and when the last summons came she realized that:--

Death is only an old door,
Set in a garden wall,
On gentle hinges it gives, at dusk
When the thrushes call.

Along the lintels are green leaves,
Beyond, the light lies still,
Very willing and weary feet,
Go over tha sill.

There is nothing to trouble any heart,
Nothing to hurt at all,
Death is only a quiet door,
In an old garden wall.

Death of Mrs. J. R. Wylie - Louise Elizabeth Smith Wylie

Wednesday morning the Death Angel was in our midst and took the spirit of Mrs. J. R. Wylie to its Heavenly Home.

Mrs. Wylie, nee Miss Bettie Smith, was born at Warsaw, Mo., August 2, 1855. She moved to Ellis County, Texas in 1866 and while there joined the Missionary Baptist Church at Prairie Valley, at the age of 13. Later she moved her church membership to Ferris, Texas. In 1899 with her father's family she came to Matagorda County and the Smith home was at Ashby. Here she married to J. R. Wylie in 1895. Mr. Wylie has been a devoted companion and in the last days when he knew separation from life to death would take his wife, though feeble in health, he sat untiring by her bedside to add to the last comforts of her life.

Mr. and Mrs. Wylie, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, mother of Mrs. Wylie and Miss Sallie Smith, sister, came to Palacios in 1907. In the Wylie home with the tenderest of care Mrs. Wylie found victory in death after an illness of eight months.

Mrs. Wylie was a devoted daughter to her mother, caring for her in her last days; she was a devoted nurse to her sister, Miss Sallie, daily seeing to her needs and comfort; she was a loyal companion for her husband, a loyal sympathetic sister and aunt to the relatives; and an ardent supporter of her church, sharing with Paul in his words "I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ."

The funeral services were conducted at the home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, her pastor, Rev. J. A. Derrick speaking in words of tenderness and love of this life. The texts were "She hath done what she could," and "She Went About Doing Good." The male quartet of the First Baptist Church sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Abide With Me."

The body of Mrs. Wylie was tenderly laid to rest in the Palacios cemetery amid a bower of beautiful flowers.

Out of town relatives for the funeral were Mrs. T. R. Coble, San Antonio; Mrs. William Steubesand and daughter, Victoria; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Smith and son Carroll, of Danevang; Mrs. James Stuart and children, of Houston; Forrest and J. A. Partain of Houston.

The deceased leaves the following relatives to mourn her departure: Her husband, J. R Wylie; a brother, C. E. Smith, of Palacios; a sister, Mrs. J. A. Partain, Palacios, who has so tenderly cared for her during her illness; two other sisters, Miss Sallie Smith, Palacios and Mrs. T. R. Coble, San Antonio.
