Funeral services for Betty M. Brooks, 65, of Van Vleck were held at 10 am Monday, August 9 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Jim Hardaway officiating.  Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck.

Mrs. Brooks died August 6, 1999 at Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston.  She was born August 29, 1933 in Mobil, AL to the late Ed and Madge Newman Dannelley, Sr.

Mrs. Brooks was a member of the Baptist Church and a resident of Van Vleck since 1966.

She is preceded in death by her husband Joy A. Brooks – Dec. 1, 1990 and by a brother, Billy Dannelley.

She is survived by her two sons and a daughter-in-law, Wayne A. and Debra Brooks and Rich J. Brooks all of Van Vleck; two brothers, Ed Dannelley, Jr. and Paul Richardson both of Van Vleck; six grandchildren, John Anthony Brooks, Rick Andrew Brooks, Rachel Johnston, Janice Brooks, Jennifer Brooks and Jill Davis; two great grandchildren, Sean Allen Brooks and Shane Allen Johnson.

Pallbearers were Pat Zenker, Jim Dannelley, Bill Brooks, Berry Dean, Michael B. McKinney and Bret Hutson.

BAY CITY [Matagorda County, Texas] - Geneva Vollert, 78, of Bay City, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003.

She was born April 23, 1925, in Oak Hurst, to the late Jake P. and Emma Barnett. She was a Baptist.

Survivors: daughters, Dona Giblin of Warren, Lillie Jean Kreiner of Houston, and Edna "BeBe" Gullick of Bay City; son, Doug Craigen of Van Vleck; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by: sons, Ronald Craigen and Brett Craigen; sisters, Lois Cooksey, Edna Baker, and Loraine Littmann; and brothers, Bill Barnett, Alvin Barnett, Paul Barnett, and Elzie Barnett.

Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery, the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, Bay City, 979-245-4613.

Services for Bennie R. Harmer of Bay City were scheduled for 2 pm today in the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W. D. Baker officiating.

Mrs. Harmer, 84. Was born Jan. 27, 1899 in Polk County, Texas.  She was a long-time resident of Bay City and a member of the First Baptist Church.  She died Dec. 20, 1983 in Willowbrook Nursing Home in Longview, Texas.

She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Christian of Longview; one son, John w. Harmer of Bay City; two sisters, Gertie Barrett of Bartlesville, Okla. And Edith Walker of Houston; one brother, E. O. Richardson of Baytown; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Sandy Christian, Larry Christian, J. W. “Skip” Harmer, Doug Smith, Walter Ritz, and Jay Harvey.

Burial at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Allen Hoppe

Allen Hoppe, 61, of Bay City, passed away at his home Saturday, Sept. 24. He was a member of the Bay City Fire Dept. for 30 years, also he was a member of the Bay City Masonic Lodge AM & FM, The American Legion and was a Charter member of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he served in several capacities and offices of the Church.  He had parked cars for the football games for the past 30 years, missing his first game this last Friday.  Mr. Hoppe was employed by the Dentler Co. for the past 35 years and had been a resident of Bay City for 30 years. Survivors include: wife, Helen Virginia Hoppe; three children: Helen Marie Hoppe of Houston, Mrs. Karen Lynn Hindelang of San Antonio, and Charles Allen Hoppe of Gause, Texas; two brothers, C. A. Hoppe of Sealy and Palmer Hoppe of Columbus, Texas. 

Funeral services were held Monday, September 26, at 2:30 pm with the Rev. Alvin Epperson of St. Peters Lutheran Church officiating.  Following graveside services at Roselawn Memorial Park the Bay City Masonic Lodge conducted a Masonic service.  Pallbearers included: Dr. Paul Brewer, A. H. Meinke, Clark Bergstrom, O. A. Schraub, Gus Seeker and R. M. Sump; Honorary pallbearers were all the members of the Bay City Volunteer Fire Dept., also David Sitz, F. W. Roe, and Walter Mayer. The family requested in lieu of flowers that memorials be given to the St. Peters Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.  Service under the direction of Dick R. Gladys Marie Herring Jones, 95, of Conroe, Texas passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at her home in Conroe. She was born on September 22, 1923 in Krum, Texas and graduated from Krum High School as valedictorian of the class of 1940. She attended the University of North Texas where she met her husband, Aldric Jones. They were married in the community of Plainview, Texas on October 9, 1942. The couple eventually settled and raised their two children in Bay City, Texas. Gladys’ education continued at the University of Houston where she graduated with a degree in elementary education in 1957. She taught fifth grade in Bay City until the family moved to Conroe in 1969 at which point she taught fourth grade at Armstrong Elementary until her retirement in 1985. She promoted women educators and excellence in education as an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Gladys was a firm believer in God and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Conroe.

Gladys was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher and friend who will be remembered for her kindness, loving heart and thoughtfulness. Gladys was an educator at heart and taught all by her example. Her granddaughters will be forever grateful for those weeks in the summer spent with their Nanny at “Mrs. Jones’ Finishing School” learning how to treat others as one would want to be treated and how a lady should act at all times. She enjoyed time with family and friends and particularly enjoyed playing cards and visiting with the ladies in her Friday night card group.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Clay Herring and Bessie Mae (Bishop) Herring, her husband, Aldric Jones, her daughter-in-law Glenda Ramsey Jones and her five sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Ann (Jones) Liner and husband James Douglas Liner of Houston, Texas, son George Clay Jones of Liberty, Texas; three granddaughters, Doniell Marie (Liner) Washburn of Tomball, Texas, Jamie Lynn (Liner) Anderson and husband Mark Noble Anderson, Jr. of Tomball and Amanda Joyce (Jones) Rucka and husband Justin Wayne Rucka of Crosby, Texas; seven great grandchildren, Mark Lynn Washburn, Jr. of Tomball, Kaden Clay, Kalee Dawn and Ty Andrew Wayne Rucka of Crosby, Catherine Elizabeth, Lauren Elyse and Caleb Aldric Anderson of Tomball; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Metcalf Funeral Directors to be immediately followed by the funeral service at the same location at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Roselawn Memorial Park in Bay City, Texas.

Mary Lucile Kirby, 87, of Bay City, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2001. She was born August 14, 1914 in Matagorda County, Texas to Elton F. Goodall and Buelah Leggett Goodall.

She was a lifelong resident of Matagorda County, a member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City, and a member of the Business Womens Club.

She is survived by her sons, Brent Kirby of Wadsworth and Jerry Kirby of Richmond; brother, Elton F. Kirby, Jr. of Hallettsville; by six grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester M. Kirby and by her parents, Elton F. and Buelah Goodall.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Zimmerman officiating.

Pallbearers will be Don Langford, Steve McClelland, Bobby McClelland, Kent Kirby, Larry Kirk, and Eric Aldis. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, Texas.

The family will receive friends and visitors at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2001.

Funeral services for John Henry Lee, 55, of Bay City, will be held at 10 am Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church, Bay City with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Lee was born Aug. 11, 1929 in Wadsworth, and died at 10:35 am Feb. 17, 1985, at Matagorda General Hospital.

A lifelong resident of Bay City, he was a stock supervisor at Phillips Petroleum Co. and a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife, Ben Jean Simmons Lee of Bay City; three daughters, Jaye Susan Stevens and Linda Jean Thane of Bay City; a son, Johnny Van Lee of Bay City; three sisters, Florence Bell of Van Vleck, Gladys Averitt of Fort Worth and Ola Mae Brietzke of Bay City; and three brothers, Edward Lee and C. B. Lee, both of Wadsworth, and Bryan Lee of Alvin; and grandchildren.

Pallbearers, include Johnny Van Lee, Van Critendon, Carl Critendon, Edwin Hollaway, Robert Sparks and Donnie Dornak.  Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Ben Jean Lee, 71, of Bay City died Nov. 16 at Specialty Hospital in Houston. She was born January 2, 1930 in Coushatta, La. to the late Van Johnson and Ila Mae Claye Simmons. Mrs. Lee was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, a resident of Bay City since 1937 and a member of the Easter Star Chapter #380, Bay City.

Survivors include: three daughters and sons-in-law: Debra and Wayne Brooks of Van Vleck, Susan and James Stevens of Bay City, and Linda and Shawn Dykes of Bay City; sister: Janice Critendon of Port Lavaca; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John H. Lee and by her son Johnny Van Lee.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.
