Effie "Ida" Eastman Lyle Johns
(July 29, 1919 - October 21, 2008)

Today, we morn the passing of Effie "Ida" Eastman Lyle Johns, 89, of Victoria, TX (formerly of Bay City) as a result of a declining health and dementia. Ida was born in Tavner, TX on July 29, 1919 to Loraine Rufus Eastman and Francis Fojtik Eastman. December 1924, her family loaded the family wagon and moved to Cedar Lane, Texas , only to wake up to snow the next morning. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1939 along with her high school sweetheart William A. "Alex" Lyle Sr. They were married after a long courtship on June 7th, 1942. While Alex was off serving his country overseas, Ida worked at the Houston Ship Yards as a welder. After the war, Ida and Alex settled in Bay City and started a family. They had 3 children: William Alexander "Bill" Lyle Jr., Lynel Lyle Welvaert, and James Eastman Lyle. After 43 years of marriage, Alex died in a car accident. Ida survived breast cancer in 1986, but made a full recovery to go on to enjoy her garden and yard. In 1988, she and Charles Johns Jr. were married. They had 14 years together, until his death due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Due to her health, in 2005, Mrs. Johns took up residency at Texan East Nursing and Rehab in Victoria, TX. She was an avid Bingo player at the facility, looked forward to the visits of Mr. & Mrs. Rex Moore from the First Baptist Church, Bay City, watching the birds and squirrels out her window and visitation of her great grandsons. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City and the TOPS of Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: W. A. Lyle Sr. and Charles Johns Jr., her oldest son, Bill; a brother: Melvin Eastman; and her sister: Lettie Eastman Legg.

She is survived by her children: Lynel Welvaert (Jim) of Victoria and James E. Lyle (Joy) of LaGrange; Grandchildren: Jamie Rainey (Shawn) of Victoria, J. Russel Boyd (Brandi) of Kyle, TX, Jonna Lyle of LaGrange, and James Alexander Lyle of Odessa, TX; Great grandchildren: Ashton and Branton Rainey of Victoria: her sisters: Alice Brown of Houston, TX and Vivian Harmon of Alleyton, TX: and by many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the special caregivers over the years - especially Eunice Moore, Sharon Perry, and Dorothy Parks of Bay City. Also, special nurses Alethea, Sylvia, Sandra, Nancy, Tabitha and the wonderful Crown Hospice Family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck, TX. Pallbearers will be James Alexander Lyle, Joseph Russell Boyd, Jackie Wotipka, Shawn Rainey, Jim Welvaert, and David Lyle. Honorary pallbearers are the Jubilaires and members of the First Baptist Church in Bay City.

William Alexander Lyle Sr.

Funeral services for William Alexander Lyle Sr., 64, of Bay City, will be held at 2 pm Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Haskell and James D. Sowell officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Lyle was born Sept. 16, 1920 to Samuel and Alma Renken Lyle in Ramsey Community, Texas, and died June 11, 1985 in Eagle Lake. He was a veteran of WW II where he served in the U. S. Air Force and was a member of the American Legion and the Baptist church. 

Survivors include his wife, Effie Ida Lyle of Bay City; his mother, Alma Lyle of Sweeny; a daughter, Lynel Boyd of Victoria; a son, James E. Lyle of Victoria; a sister, Inetha Hart of Houston; two brothers, Robert Lyle of Bay City and Samuel Lyle of San Antonio; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Phillip Walker, Manuel Anzaldua Jr., Joe Ledwig Jr., Gary Orsak, B. W. “Butch” Bevers and A. J. Barber. Honorary pallbearers include E. F. Hudson Sr., and employees of Marathon Oil. Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Miguel Angel Maldonado

Graveside services for infant Miguel Angel Maldonado, 10 days, of Van Vleck were scheduled for 11 am today at Roselawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Edward Boren officiating.

Mr. Maldonado was born Dec. 18, 1991, in Galveston and died Dec. 28, 1991, at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.

He is survived by his parents, Pedro and Angelita Maldonado of Van Vleck; two brothers, Raymond and Ruben Garcia of Van Vleck; a sister, Stella Garcia Stevens of Van Vleck; material grandparents, Ramon Escobar and Estella Escobar, both of Bay City; paternal grandparents, Tomas and Juana Maldonado of Mexico; and maternal great-grandmother, Angelita Escobar of Bay City.

Rodrigo Martinez Jr.

Rodrigo Martinez Jr, 28 days old, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2004 in Houston, Texas. He was born July 7, 2004 in Bay City to Rodrigo Martinez Sr. and Crystal Renee Gonzales.

He is survived: by his parents, Rodrigo Martinez Sr. and Crystal Renee Gonzales of Bay City; by maternal grandmother, Alicia Gonzales of Bay City; and his paternal grandfather, Odilon Martinez of Bay City.

Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004 at Roselawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Gerry Cernoch officiating. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, TX.

Arrangements were with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.

Funeral service for Burl Houston McKinney, 83, of Van Vleck, will be held at 11 am Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Rev. Charles Sonnier officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Rosary will be said at 8 pm Thursday at the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel

Mr. McKinney was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Smiley, Texas, to Tip and Lillie Ivy McKinney, and died August 19, 1987, in Matagorda General Hospital.

He was principal of Van Vleck Elementary for 15 years and head coach and athletic director at Van Vleck prior to that.  McKinney was a Catholic and a member of the Bay City VFW, and had lived in Van Vleck since 1962.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann McKinney of Van Vleck; his father, Tip McKinney of Nixon, Texas; two sons, David McKinney and Mike McKinney, both of Van Vleck; a sister Josephine Quinney of San Antonio; two brothers, Homer McKinney of Nixon and Ray McKinney of San Antonio; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jody Wyse, Jim Foss, Jim Brown, Mike O’Connell, Bill McGonagle, Johnny Haurerland and Jerry Greet.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Henry “Hank” Allen Melat

Funeral services for Henry “Hank” Allen Melat, 49, of Bay City were scheduled for 3 pm today at the Sixth Street Church of Christ with James Davis officiating. Burial to follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Melat was born July 6, 1940, to Robert Henry and Jeanette Henderson Melat of New Braunsfels and died May 6, 1990.

He was a 25-year employee with Hoechst Celanese Chemical Co. and was a member of the Texas Christmas Tree Growers Association.

Survivors include his wife Judy Melat of Bay City; parents, Robert and Jeanette Henderson Melat of New Braunsfels; a son, Mike Melat of Birmingham, Ala.; a daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Mike La Perle of Irving; and two grandchildren, Crystal and Karra Melat of Birmingham, Ala.

Pallbearers are Jim Weaver, Jim Farmer, Noel Smith, Ralph Peterson, Pete Ingram and Terry Gaeconett.

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.
