Funeral services for Irma “Priscilla” Bishop Grimes, 88 will be held at 2 pm Nov 10, 1999 at First Baptist Church in Bay City with Dr. Mike Zimmerman officiating.  Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck. 

Mrs. Grimes died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999 in Bay City.  She was born Oct. 12, 1911 in Edinburg to An Houston and Laura Brister Bishop, Jr.

She was a member of the at First Baptist Church in Bay City, the Matagorda General Auxiliary as a Pink Lady, the Pilot Club, and a resident of Bay City for 53 years.

She is survived by: her daughter and son-in-law, Billie Marie Whitley and Robert “Diddy” Whitley of Bay City; sister Yuma Bishop Ramey of Ingleside; sister-in-law Kathleen Grimes Weber of Riveria; grandchildren, Holly Vacek and her husband Glen, and Reid Whitley and his wife, Sandy; great grandchildren, Whitley Vacek, Levi Vacek, Amisti Whitley, Jaide Whitley and Tate Hanah Whitley; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gordon Grimes and her parents.

Pallbearers will be: James Sowell, Roy Sanders, Tom Anderson, Roby Woodard, Warren Kinsey and John Dickerson.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Frank Gayle, Wayne Bus, Jimmy Allen, Bill Robb, Jess Fallis, Rudy Garza, Paul Roberts, Tom Uher, Taylor Steves, Noaud Mamoun, J. D. Vernon, Gary Shimek, Clyde Workman, Charlie Hairston, and Dr. Tom Chick.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Clyde Jerome Henry, 66, of Bay City will be held at 2 pm Saturday at St. Paul’s Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Lewis and the Rev. Leon Grisson officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Henry was born Nov. 24, 1919, in Mount Pleasant, Texas and died July 17, 1986, at Matagorda General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was a member of the Bay City Volunteer Fire Department for 38 years and a former assistant chief. He was a veteran of WW II and a member of at St. Paul’s Methodist Church.

He worked as a supervisor for Central Power and Light from 1940 until his retirement in 1981.  He served many years on the city’s electrical board.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Henry of Bay City; two daughters, Sandra Larsen of Tyler and Brenda Langham of Bay City; a brother, William “Bill” Henry of Ganado; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Russell Toddish, Jack Brown, Clarence Krenek, George Kilbridge, Larry Chambless and Mark Thornton.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bay City Volunteer Fire Department.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Gregg Laurence, Long Time Resident in County, Dies

Mr. Gregg Laurence, 74, rancher and land owner in Matagorda county for 32 years died suddenly Wed. afternoon May 17 at 5:45. Mr. Laurence, who, with his wife had lived at their Sugar Valley ranch home for years, had suffered a severe heart attack several months ago but was apparently in fair health and able to be up and about as usual at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gregg Laurence of Sugar Valley; one son, Ira of Bay City.

Funeral services were from Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Friday morning at 10 with Mr. Arden Lawrence, pastor of the Church of Christ officiating. Interment was to be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Allen W. Laurence

Funeral services for Mrs. Allen W. Laurence, 92, of Van Vleck were scheduled for today at First United Methodist Church of Van Vleck with the Rev. Bob Sinclair officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. 

Mrs. Laurence was born Dec. 7, 1891, in Taylor, Texas, and died Aug. 22, 1984, at Matagorda General Hospital.  She had been a resident of Matagorda County since 1924. 

Survivors include: two granddaughters, Laura Dell Belcher of Harlingen and Sandra Lynn Merriman of Clarksville, Texas; three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Laurence was preceded in death by her husband, Gregg Laurence, on May 16, 1956, and her son James Ira Laurence on November 16, 1982.

Pallbearers include Neil Gibson, E. B. Wicker, Tom Rugeley, Burt O’Connell, Loren Henderson and Truitt Farris.

Services will be held for James Ira Laurence, 64, of Bay City, 2 pm Wednesday at Taylor Brothers Chapel.

Officiating at services will be the Rev. Holly Briscoe.  Laurence died November 16, 1982 at the Methodist Hospital in Houston. 

Survivors include mother, Mrs. Allen Laurence of Bay City, daughters, Laura Dell Belcher of Harlingen, Sandra Lynn Merriman of Clarksville and Mona Allen of Bay City; son, William Laurence of Bay City; 7 grandchildren. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.  Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

John George Long

Funeral services for John George Long, 90, of Bay City, were held at 3 pm today at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with William Baughman officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. 

Mr. Long was born Feb. 2, 1894, in Liverpool, Texas and died at 11:30am Dec. 2, 1984 at Matagorda General Hospital.

He was a resident of Bay City for the post 70 years and was a member of the Houston A.A.O.N.M.S., Galveston A&A Scottish Rite of Masonry and Alvin Lodge 762.

Survivors include a daughter, Cathryn L. Clark of Bay City; a son, John Franklyn Long of Houston; and eight grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Adams Long.

Pallbearers include George Yoxtheimer, Leonard Braden, Claude Gay, Joseph Catrone, James P. Roberts and Jim Allen.

Honorary pallbearers are L. E. Brockman, Frank Carrington, J. R. Davis, David Nance, Harry Wirth, Joe Entzminger, Frank Baker, Hayden Curtis and Harlan Argo.

Arrangements were made with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.
